Premiere Watch: Hyena, Hi Bye, Mama!

This week’s premieres don’t have much in common, but they both touch on what it means to lead a life well-lived.

Hyena

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Legal
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Kim Hye-soo and Joo Ji-hoon are going head to head as top lawyers and bitter rivals from totally different worlds. Kim Hye-soo was born into poverty while Joo Ji-hoon has only ever known privilege and comfort. Early on in life, Kim set her sights on becoming a laywer; though she was too poor to attend college, she passed the bar thanks to her top-notch intellect. From that point on her life is solely about the pursuit of money and she manages to build up an impressively moneyed clientele. In contrast, Joo Ji-hoon is the ultimate “gold spoon,” with law being the family business. Blessed with a sharp mind, his entire life has been one smooth ride until he meets Kim Hye-soo. While Kim’s priority is money, Joo’s priority is accumulating power so when two people with different goals are chasing after the same clients, it’s a battle of the fittest to see who will emerge on top. I’m still not sure if this will be a serious look at the 1% and lawyers, or more of a comedic satire but either way, I can’t wait to see the Kim Hye-soo–Joo Ji-hoon match up.

Hi Bye, Mama!

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Fantasy, human
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Life was wonderful for Kim Tae-hee and her husband Lee Kyu-hyung; they had a happy marriage and a lovely baby. But Kim dies in a sudden accident, she’s unable to move on in the afterlife and he’s left to cope with becoming a widower and single dad. As the years go by, Kim Tae-hee is stuck in limbo until one day she finds herself back on the mortal plane. She’s been given a literal second chance at life, if she can complete her reincarnation mission within 49 days, she’ll be able to stay with her family. But after 5 years, Lee had come to terms with his loss and is newly remarried to Go Bo-kyul. When he learns his once-dead wife is very much alive, where will his heart lead him? Will Kim Tae-hee succeed in completing her mission and stay by her daughter’s side? Hi Bye, Mama! was penned by the writer of Go Back Spouses, Kwon Hye-joo so have your tissues handy as I expect we’ll be crying through this one too.

It looks fun and super sad at the same time... If she can come back but will have to leave after like in 49 Days, it will frustrate me so much!

The second wife in Hi bye,Mama? If it is then that’s true. Something about her is weird
Like sooo weird!

I'll give both a try, but ruthless top lawyer shows are not my favorite thing, and tear-jerkers (if they go that route) aren't much better. Might be a pretty dull season.

Although I love Ju Ji hoon, I hate lawyer/courtroom dramas the most. What to do...

I checked out Hyena. If the intro episode is any indication, it will be more than just them being lawyers. I recommend checking it out.

According to the plot, Hi bye mama feels like we should root for Kim tae hee's character, but what about the new wife? It is not her fault.
Nevertheless and even after the crazy reincarnation plot, I am still interested in watching this drama.

That's what I also think.
And also the little girl... She probably relates to the second wife as her mum, as her real mum died so soon and I don't even think she can remember her.
Or the second wife is a terribly bad person that framed the father into marriage or I can't see how it will go.
I will be in for Lee Kyu-Hyung, as I love his acting. And some side characters are played by some of my fav. actors.

If you have seen Go back couple, you'll know that this writer has a great tendency of making every character humane and likeable while they have issues. I don't think there will be any particular evil person here unless a secondary villain. Well I can be wrong too but I have high hopes from this writer and she may make everything reasonable even with everyone being nice.

I am also here because of Lee Kyu-Hyung. I loved him in prison playbook, and I liked him in dr. John. I have heard he was amazing in forest of secrets, but I haven't watched that one out. Yet, for him, maybe I will.
Go back spouses made me cry as well... a lot... and yes, that is also a reason to trust this writer.

He was amazing in Forest of Secrets and in Life. Two of my favourite dramas EVER.
I haven't seen Go back couple, but I had it on my watch list for a while.

Thank you for your premiere watch for HYENA and HI BYE, MAMA!, @stroopwafel. ;-)

I just watched the first episode of HYENA, and it's shaping up to be an interesting character study with substance, from what I can tell. It may be set in a law firm, but Geum-ja's apparent back story is what hooked me. I'm not sure what to expect after this opening episode went gangbusters, but I'll stick around for more.

As for HI BYE, MAMA!, the description is giving me vibes of the movie WONDERFUL NIGHTMARE, which I really enjoyed, crossed with 49 DAYS, which put me through the wringer (and made me a lifetime fangirl of Jung Il-woo for his portrayal of Scheduler). Writer-nim Kwon Hye-joo's GO BACK SPOUSES was full of touching interludes, in particular Kim Mi-kyung's lovely turn as Mom. This looks like another helping of second chances.

Dang. I saw Lee Kyu-hyung but the synopsis didn't really interest me until it said it's from the writer of Go Back Spouses. That drama was hella good.

Hi Bye Mama sounds like it's be super sad. I'm not a fan of waiting each week for 2 episodes so I'll wait a while on this, and see the reviews. I have trouble finishing tearjerker dramas.
