Jang Ki-yong, Lee Soo-hyuk confirmed for retro reincarnation melodrama Born Again

Lee Soo-hyuk, Jin Se-yeon, Jang Ki-yong

It looks like there will be an intense rivalry between Jang Ki-yong (Search Query: WWW) and Lee Soo-hyuk (The Man Living in Our House) for the affections of one lucky lady in the upcoming retro melodrama, Born Again. Currently, both male leads have confirmed, and Jin Se-yeon (Selection: War Between Women, Item) is being courted for the part of the female lead.

In 1980, the three meet for the first time and become intertwined in a fateful relationship of fiery passion and jealousy. They are reincarnated in the present day with different life circumstances, but the fierce competition for the love of one woman begins again.

For his 1980s character, Jang Ki-yong plays a lone wolf who rejects the life of wickedness laid out for him by his evil father. In the present, he plays an elite medical student. Meanwhile, Lee Soo-hyuk plays a detective who guards his pure love as his 1980s character, and a prosecutor who believes criminal behavior is genetic for his present-day character.

It’ll be interesting to see how these characters become involved with each other. For Jang Ki-yong alone, I would have watched this series (because I was especially impressed with Come and Hug Me), but you add Lee Soo-hyuk (and his abs), and I’m already counting down the months until Born Again starts.

Monday-Tuesday drama Born Again, directed by Jin Hyung-wook and written by Jung Soo-mi, will be broadcast on KBS starting this April.

Viewed thru the filter of certain medical dramas -- back to wickedness?

From what i read on other info he plays in the present timeline the killer as in the past as he was in love with the heroine but the girl loved the other guy,the good guy...And Lee Soo Hyuk being the good guy...One way or another it is certain that in 1980 they all 3 end up in tragedy...

Jang Ki Yong turned down Youth Records to play duality time version of Kill It.

Welp, I guess Youth Records script must be really terrible for him to drop that and take this drama. Knowing Ha Myung Hee, I don't doubt it.

To be fair Park So Dam does not have an eye for picking good drama scripts so I would not be surprised Youth Records ends up being a major snooze fest.

I have an Avatar of Park So Dam, so I know that Sodam doesn't have luck for drama.

In Chungmuro, she auditioned for the roles she wanted. The Priests, The Throne, Veteran etc. The only one she didn't have to audition is Parasite b/c Director Bong handpicked her. All her movies are blockbuster hits.

In Korean drama world, she doesn't audition, she accepts the offers because she doesn't have the seniority power to turn the offer down. Thus, she accepts whichever drama scripts whoever director or scriptwriter is. Example, Cinerella and Beautiful Mind. Both insisted on having her as female lead, and she didn't turn them down even though there was filming schedule conflict.

Now Youth Record director/scriptwriter offers her the main role, and she doesn't turn it down again, because she doesn't have the seniority power to do so. Because she doesn't want to make a bad impression.

That's the truth. When you are actress, sexism and seniority in Korean society still persists. If you are not senior enough and a woman yourself, it makes you bad. It's called bad rep.

No one wants to be Korean Katherine Heigl.

And what kind of a ridiculously talented and handsome pairing is this? Let a girl (female lead and me) breathe!

I had the pleasure to watch her in Grand Prince. Granted, she didn't have a particularly inspired character, but nevertheless she was not once on par with the other brilliant actors and she only has one expression. Maybe she'd be better in a romcom? I don't know why she's typecast for sageuks when they require such a depth of emotion.

I have watched her in Grand Prince & Queen Love & War that's airing currently. While she isn't awful, she isn't good either. She has a very limited range of expressions even when she given a good script. She's better in QL&W than the last one I saw her in, Maybe she'll pull a Suzy or Victoria Song?

Maybe she's better in modern dramas than sageuks? A girl can hope right?! 😔

I'm glad to hear she's looking a little better! Unfortunately, unlike everyone else who liked Suzy in comedies with the "right director" , I still don't so there probably isn't much hope for me.

To be fair I've only seen Suzy in WYWS & I love that drama, I stopped vagabond at ep 1 & haven't seen Gu Family book yet so I don't know how good or bad she can get.
What are those dramas with funny directors? Are there others as well?

I don't dislike her, but she only has one expression throughout the dramas she's been. Its as if she's the same character over and over again. And I've watched her since Gaksital...no emotions, nothing...just pretty.

I echo your thoughts. 🙄. Why are all her dramas where BOTH male leads are madly in love with her? She’s always at the apex? That’s what I can’t buy with her characters and acting. She can’t ever convince me that she’s that desirable. Other than her pretty face, she’s just really bland. So she can never quite convince me that she’s worth the effort. I always wonder if it’s because her acting is such that if you put her up against a half decent second lead, she would be on the losing end 😂.

Well, not that I can understand what the story is about.
Besides, I don't like the idea of reincarnation and 1980 in the same sentence... why? You may ask... I've lived the 80's and I consider myself young enough not to be reincarnated...
Anyway, I'll be there for Jang Ki-yong. I loved him last year in the three dramas he was. I like this guy.

Since there is no information about female leads past and current incarnation, let’s try to fill in gap.
In 1980’s she came in contact with son of mafia and a detective. The k-drama options I can think for her character are:
- She was daughter of another mafia
- She was witness to the crime committed by mafia
- She took loan from mafia to help her family
- She was rookie detective with the detective as her boss

For current incarnation how did she meet a medical student and prosecutor.
- She is detective

I can not think of anything else.

Past life:
- She was mob boss mistress
- She was a killer-in-training for the mob who was sent to kill the detective who's closing in on them but fell in love with him instead
- She was the daughter of the maid in mob boss' house who opened the door for the detective when he came and later became his informant.

Current incarnation:
- She owns a deokbukki place frequented by both.
- She met them online on dating app

That also could be applied to Yoon Na-moo the character JKY played (wonderfully) in COME AND HUG ME. Remember psycho dad from hell?
(Maybe if I am real technical I should say applied to the young Na-moo who was played (also wonderfully) by Nam Da-reum.)

Jang Ki Yong yes!! He’s one to watch and one of my favorite upcoming talents. He was slated for the model drama that Park Bo Gum ended up taking. He said that he wants to push himself as an actor so unfortunately he declined (they said schedule conflicts) but it was probably more trying to diversify. He really impressed me in Come and Hug Me. He’s Uber talented and gorgeous to boot! I hope he’ll finally be recognized as a great talent with this drama!

yeah, that's definitely true. she's improved a fair bit, and can be convincing enough when the script and direction lends itself to her limitations. I guess I mean it more in the vein of I don't understand why she and Jin Se Yeon (and Taecyeon, and so on and so forth) get multiple lead roles whilst more talented actors are offered similar roles with far less consistency (not that that is those guys' faults by any means).
