Premiere Watch: Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency, When the Camellia Blooms, Secret Boutique, Running Investigators, Vagabond, Pegasus Market

A new wave of dramas is hitting our screens this week! With six new shows from practically every genre, we’re spoiled for choice now that the Chuseok holiday is over.

Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Fusion sageuk
Episode count: 16 episodes

Reasons to watch: Seo Ji-hoon and Gong Seung-yeon lead humble lives and are betrothed, but on their wedding day, Seo Ji-hoon suddenly disappears. It’s not a case of cold feet though, he was kidnapped and installed on the throne to be a puppet king. Though Seo’s become king, he can’t forget his first love. But marriage seems impossible as Gong is the exact opposite of what a queen is expected to be: a course, tough fighter. The solution: enlist Joseon’s best matchmaker, Kim Min-jae, to give Gong a royal makeover. Kim and his crew are facing a huge task, but the biggest complication may be the fact that Kim Min-jae also has feelings for Gong Seung-yeon. Will she choose the matchmaker or the king? I’m looking forward to seeing her decision and to seeing a Joseon twist on the classic makeover storyline.

When the Camellia Blooms

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Romance
Episode count: 32 episodes (35 minute episodes)

Reasons to watch: Gong Hyo-jin and Kang Haneul make their drama comebacks in When the Camellia Blooms as a fierce single mom and a bubbly police officer respectively. Gong Hyo-jin’s faced prejudice from the people around her her whole life, first for being an orphan and then for being a single mom. As a result she’s ever the pragmatist. When the sweet optimist that is Kang Haneul comes into her life, his warmth and belief that love is all you need start to soften her pragmatism. But not many people are rooting for them, and in addition to societal barriers (the noona romance aspect, Gong’s single motherhood status) Gong’s ex-boyfriend Kim Ji-suk may prove to be a big stumbling block. Despite being married and a father himself, he’s still nursing some unresolved feelings for his old flame. Let’s see if the drama proves Kang Haneul (and the Beatles) right. Maybe all you need is love after all.

Secret Boutique

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Political thriller
Episode count: 16 episodes

Reasons to watch: Kim Sun-ah stars as a woman determined to shake off her humble background in order to rise to the top strata of society. Starting as a bath house attendant, Kim gained the trust of a chaebol matriarch, Jang Mi-hee. Kim parlayed that trust into a position as a maid in Jang’s home. Using her wits and beauty, Kim Sun-ah managed to establish herself as the president of a boutique law firm. But she has yet to achieve her ultimate goal: to topple Jang Mi-hee from her place at the top of the pecking order. Kim Sun-ah’s mission masks some deep-seated scars and an all-encompassing need for revenge–even if revenge may mean her own downfall. If you like dramas that examine questions about human nature and explore whether there’s an end to people’s greed for money and power, this might be the show for you.

Running Investigators

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: OCN
Genre: Human, social critique
Episode count: 16 episodes

Reasons to watch: Taking a step away from their usual primetime fare of thrillers and horror, our latest OCN offering focuses its spotlight on a type of protagonist not often in the dramaland spotlight: human rights investigators. Lee Yo-won and Choi Gwi-ha headline as investigative partners for the Human Rights Commission. Lee likes to follow the rules and maintain strict boundaries. This creates some misunderstandings as people mistake her manner for a lack of empathy. Choi Gwi-ha plays against type as a big softie who has always empathized and sided with the powerless. While the partners aren’t adversaries, they certainly don’t get along, but despite their differences, Lee and Choi are united in their desire to uncover human rights violations and to battle abusers.

Vagabond

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Action, melo, thriller
Episode count: 16 episodes

Reasons to watch: Lee Seung-gi and Suzy reunite in this blockbuster drama about a dangerous hunt for truth and justice. One day passenger flight crashes, killing the passengers on board–including Lee Seung-gi’s beloved nephew. When Lee Seung-gi uncovers evidence that the crash was not what the government is making it out to be, he channels his grief and rage into uncovering what the government would rather hide away. Suzy first meets Lee directly after the plane crash. As a black ops agent, Suzy ends up grappling between following her conscience versus dealing with the reality in front of her. Shin Sung-rok rounds out the trio as a team leader within the National Intelligence Service. When he meets Lee Seung-gi, they get off on the wrong foot but the two eventually form a strange alliance with each other. After all, when you’re surrounded by lies and conspiracies, today’s enemy is tomorrow’s ally.

Pegasus Market

Time slot: Friday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Comedy
Episode count: 12 episodes

Reasons to watch: Kim Byung-chul devoted his life to his career and company. He gave his youth and passion, but in return, instead of a promotion, he’s sent to oversee a failing supermarket. His demotion sets Kim off and he puts into motion a very petty serious revenge scheme to sabotage the business. Much to the befuddlement of his new right-hand man, Lee Dong-hwi, he hires a thoroughly motley crew and makes some strange business decisions. Much to Kim Byung-chul’s befuddlement and frustration, every effort he makes to sabotage the supermarket just brings more success. Who knew it could be so hard to fail? With a cast chock-full of scene stealers and strong character actors, I’m hoping this will be both funny and a touching watch.

Well, I did not think about that..

If legal sites do not do it, I have noticed there are generous subbers in all sorts of drama sites. If it does not get subbed, I am going to be very sad.

I am actually going purely based on hope, prayer and generosity.

CW: Flash for returning, and Katy Keene for new.

NBC: This is Us for returning, no new on this channel

Fox: the resudent for returning, prodigal son for new

Abc: no returning, stumptown for new

CBS: no returning, Evil for new

And that's just network, lol, and not even all of network

Thank you for the jam-packed premiere watch, @stroopwafel!

I watched FLOWER CREW raw, and it looks good. I think I'm going to have fun with this show.

I'll be tuning in for WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS as I love both the leads -- and Kim Ji-suk reverting to second lead after his turn as big bad Yeonsangun. I guess there was no way he could be cast in another lead role after Hell froze over to allow him to play TOP STAR YOO BAEK, huh? VAGABOND is also on my radar.

I wasn't planning to watch the other shows as I've got MY COUNTRY in the offing and am currently watching THE GREAT SHOW, ARTHDAL, AND LET ME HEAR YOUR SONG, the latter pair ending soon. The description of PEGASUS MARKET sounds like the grocery store adaptation of Mel Brooks's THE PRODUCERS, minus "Spring Time for Hitler." It sounds bonkers. In a good way.

Dang, that's Lee Soon-jae in PEGASUS MARKET. I loved him in HIGH KICK! 2 THROUGH THE ROOF and MONEY FLOWER. Now I'm going to have to at least sneak a peek... And Kim Byung-chul. It would be nice to see him in something funny after he gave Namgoong Min a run for the money as an Energizer Bunny of Evil in DOCTOR PRISONER.

Omo, it's 12 episodes on Friday. Yikes, is it in that late night slot where TOP STAR YOO BAEK was exiled? Will it even be subtitled? Hmmm.

That slot makes me wary too. I still remember the desperate wait for Yoo Baek's (not even that good) sub months ago. Sigh... I really want to watch it, especially since the last time I watched Lee Soon-jae taking a role in something funny is years ago in High Kick.

Thank you for the reality check, @gadis. I thought the subtitles took forever, too, although I was truly grateful that they were translated at all. With all the heavy satoori in the show, it must have been quite a challenge.

On a happier note, it would be great if Yoon Si-yoon and Jung Bo-suk could cameo as Lee Soon-jae's son and grandson for old time's sake. And some of his co-stars from LIVE. ;-)

If there's enough physical comedy, maybe we can get by with less-than-stellar subtitles. Or maybe not. I always has the feeling that I was missing a lot in TOP STAR, in particular because it wasn't recapped.

Fingers crossed, eh?

@gadis,
Oh, rats! It's the 11PM Friday night dead zone. Does that mean one episode per week for 3 months? I don't think I can suffer through another one of those again. Good subtitles would make me seriously consider it, though.

Yup, it's the dreaded once-a-week slot. Maybe I'll give up and marathon it once it finished airing, or I'll probably be crazy enough to watch it live even without any good subs. I guess it'll depend on how good the first eps is.

3

@gadis September 17, 2019 at 1:28 AM

We might as well join hands and jump off of the Sageuk Watchers' Cliff Of Non-Doom. As long as we don't have to raft over the Niagara Falls of Agoland. *shudder* Maybe we'll have Beanie company on the way down. Here's hoping the Momo tribe feel indebted to their viewers and rescue us so we'll tune in for the ARTHDAL finale. That sounds like a plan, right? ;-)

I'm joining you. Out of all these dramas, I am only interested in PEGASUS MARKET but the wait for subs would kill me, so I'll wait to binge it later.

Isn't MISS LEE premiering next week? TvN will have two workplace dramas on at the same time, and I'm guessing subs will be more easily available for MISS LEE.

I'd watch grandpa Lee's drama but I don't have time :(.

@kethysk,
TOP STAR YOO BAEK was great fun, but it aired only one episode per week at 11PM on Friday nights for 11 episodes. It took place on a remote island with idosyncratic residents where Yoo Baek was in essence "exiled" after a scandal. The islanders all spoke satoori, which may have contributed to slow subtitling. This was one show that really would have benefited from recaps because there were so many pop culture references to pop singers from way back (IIRC, 70s-80s), for instance. Merchant marine captain Lee Sang-yeob as Ma-dol Oppa ended up as second lead, and had a very touching backstory. (So did Top Star himself.) Jeon So-min as plucky general store proprietor Oh Kang-soon. The rest of the cast was great, and loaded to the gunwales with dandy veterans.

One of the few shows that had me chortling out loud. The villagers were great. And I'm sure I missed all the pop references and puns so likely would have liked it even more. However, much as I liked the beginning, the show lost its steam for me and I didn't finish it. Maybe I'll binge the last half now it's fully subbed.

@pakalanapikake
Maybe I should give it 4 eps. The PD and writer are both green and some of the actors. It's so obvious before you even get to look them up.
Kim Min-jae is doing good though.

1

@kiara September 18, 2019 at 11:04 AM

I got through the first 2 eps. of FLOWER CREW and liked it. I didn't realize that the Lee Soo is played by Seo Ji-hoon. I really enjoyed his performance in MAMA FAIRY AND THE WOODCUTTER, so I've got even more incentive to tune in. KMJ is doing fine.

The show's vibe strikes me as similar to 100 DAYS MY PRINCE. What at first glance sounds like a comic romp turns out to be anything but when the court politics kicks in and things get bloodthirsty real fast. I wasn't expecting it to happen in the first 5 minutes.

One thing I particularly enjoyed was the Sageuk Barrels Of Non-Doom. They were so much more unpredictable than the Ox Cart Of Doom. ;-)

1

@pakalanapikake,
Tonight I watched ep. 16 of ARTHDAL so officially caught up, yay! WTDCYN is unfortunately dropped.
I took a look at the cast of CAMILLIA and saw that Yeom Hye-ran (great in LIFE and LAWLESS LAWYER among others) is in the show so I decided to watch episode 1. I am unfamiliar with the leads but enjoyed what I saw. Kang Ha-neul had me laughing. That’s all I can say for now.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo,
Congratulations on catching up to ARTHDAL in time for the big finish. I still haven't made it over to the ep. 15 recap, but hope to get there soon.

I noticed a couple of good veteran actors in CAMELLIA, too. In addition to Yeon Hye-ran, there's also the fabulous Ko Du-shim, and Kim Sun-young (Det. Lee in LOOKOUT, and a bunch of other dramas I've seen -- with a long list of movie roles). Kong Hyo-jin was terrific as the female lead in JEALOUSY INCARNATE w/ Jo Jung-seok. She fixed Gong Yoo's wagon in BISCUIT TEACHER AND STAR CANDY. And she was dandy as a washed-up idol in THE GREATEST LOVE with Cha Seung-won. Not to mention IT'S OKAY, THIS IS LOVE. I didn't realize that I'd seen her in the movies VOLCANO HIGH, HEAVEN'S SOLDIERS, and LOVE FICTION. I just really like her vibe.

Kang Ha-neul's performance was great in MOON LOVERS, even though his character was frustrating. I enjoyed his turn in ANGEL EYES, too. He was in DRAMA SPECIAL: REBELLION / REBELLIOUS, which I was able to really appreciate after watching REBEL. In it, Seo Hyun-jin plays his mom.

I also liked him in the movie LIKE FOR LIKES. His first film role was in the madcap sageuk comedy BATTLEFIELD HEROES alongside Jung Jin-young, Lee Moon-sik (the original Geoshigi!), Ryoo Seung-ryong, and Lee Kwang-soo. MIDNIGHT RUNNERS was a romp with a serious streak. KHN and fellow police cadet Park Seo-joon are hilarious -- and end up on the wrong side of instructor Park Ha-sun. I didn't even recognize her in LOVE AFFAIRS IN THE AFTERNOON. Sung Dong-il plays one of their professors.

As for CAMELLIA, I've only seen the first episode raw as it took a while for subtitles to arrive. I thought it was supposed to air on Netflix, but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere when I looked for it yesterday. Weird.

Finally Gong Hyo-jin will grace my screen again. I really miss her. And with the new project from Fight My Way's writer to boot. Getting Kim Ji-suk, Kang Ha-neul, and Oh Jung-se in the same drama is a sweet cherry on top.

Pegasus Market sounds really funny. I just hope someone is kind enough to sub this *sudden flashbacks to crazy waiting for Top Star Yoo Baek's subs*. I watched Kim Byung-chul and Jung Hye-sung promoting this drama on var show Amazing Saturday, and I couldn't believe how cute this ajusshi is. Even the regular members kept commenting on how cute he is.

I'm sure that Kim Byung-chul's expertise in running a pawnshop and odd-jobs service in Joseon will come in handy at Pegasus Market, whether he wants that or not.

I see that Magic Horse has another role lined up for after ARTHDAL folds its tents. Except that now he'll be taking to the sky. LOL!

Paging *yyishere YY: Do you have any new roles lined up in this batch of premiering shows? You were talking about possibly doing trees. I think the camellia would be right up your alley. They smell divine. And the red blossoms would look great on you. ;-)

@yyishere, I'm thrilled that you're stepping up to the plate. I know for a fact that you would do a terrific job as ha-neul -- er, not Kang Ha-neul. The other ha-neul. I cannot wait to see your rosy dawns and flaming dusks, purple twilights... with scintillating rainbows during sun showers, and black velvet nights spangled with stars and fireflies. And playful zephyrs that give Magic Horse Pegasus a gentle tail wind, while wafting the fragrance of camellia all the way to Arthdal, or Busan, whichever is more romantic.

4

Magic horse is probably tired of being sidelined in the latest portion of Arthdal (well, at least I think that's what happened from the snippets I read in fan wall). He wanted to transform into the legendary pegasus to aid our petty boss and his right-hand man in their clashing quests to both ruin and save the supermarket. The horse must longed for a potentially hilarious and bloodbath-free situation after the sudden turn Arthdal took. 😉😉

I have only finished 2 Chinese dramas in 2019. The Longest Day in Chang An and Mr Fighting( I loved it). 2018 had more completions in Evernight, Like a Flowing River, The Love Knot: His Excellency’s First Love( loved it until the weird/brutal ending), and The Story of Ming Lan( my favorite Chinese drama).

As a person born and raised in the U.S., I love discovering new music also from these shows. A current favorite from Mr Fighting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNsVDwaZp9A&list=PLQ_RBv_9DVc8V9gvEiaD-78NsQpB2fMLV&index=3&t=0s

Oh. Flower Crew and When the Camelia blooms both have good writers and ofc I'm an idiot so I'm watching Vagabond...
Let Me Here Your Song ends today.
Arthdal finishes this weekend.
If we finish Tree With Deep Roots in the next week we MIGHT just have room for everything plus a non airing.

Unfortunately I fell asleep during Joseon marriage agency. I’ll wait to see what Beanies say to see if I should pick it up later. The cast of Pegasus market is exciting! Definitely looking forward to checking it out. I’m not sure about Vagabond. I love Shin Sung Rok but the dramas he’s been that I’ve tried to watch in have sadly not been great. I’ve found that I approach the projects he chooses hesitantly in spite of my love for him. Fingers crossed this one is good. Also gonna check out Camelia

On Joseon Marriage Agency, in episode 1 there was too much goofiness that went nowhere and some "overacting" as well as rather pathetic sense that all the characters seemed to think that they were tremendously good looking (they are not much better than average). But, I was a little bored and lonely this week so watched episode 2 anyway and it did improve. I'm pretty sure I'll try episode 3, as well. I think there will likely be a conflict among viewers about who the main lead male is or at least which of the two main guys should get the girl. Right now the events have built up in such a way that there will be major changes to everyone involved. It could turn out to be worth watching.

I actually wanna see them all and strangely on my top priority is Pegasus Market! Kim Byung-chul never disappointed till now with all his drama choices,amazing cast and the plot are what made it on my no 1 priority!!!After comes the high stake thrillers and hope Vagabond and Secret Boutique will trully deliver!!! Also,Lee Seung Gi and Shin Sung-rok in the same drama!!!!

Am I the only one who watched Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency for the cast and the teaser but got disappointed by the editing? I hope the editing gets better next week.

Also, more Go Won-hee please and I'm rooting for Seo Ji-hoon's character.

Totally agree with you on the editing—I don't think it's doing much for the show. I'm also all aboard the Seo Jihoon train right now. I just want our Soo to be happy!

The camera angles on episode 2 made things worse and gave me headaches. HAHA. I really hope Soo gets the girl and becomes happy because he and Go Won-hee are the only people I care about in this drama (so far). I know Gong Seung-yeon is amazing so I'm really hoping I will love her character the same way as I loved her in both Circle and Are You Human, where the characters she portrayed are not really likeable at first but they eventually grow on you.

Soo seems like such a sweetheart and (I'm not sure how much of this is a spoiler, since it's in the plot summary online, but I'll try to be vague) I really felt myself losing interest once they tossed him into his robes and made him all sad. I wish I could reach into my screen and get him out of there.

I get you. I just needed to watch something hence I ended up with this show. I might fast forward my way through this show to keep my sanity and to prevent even more headaches.

I’m not a fan of historical setup drama but when Park Jihoon did his famous “jeojang” moment during the 1st episode, oh yea, I think Ima watch the Flower Crew until the very end then. Go winkie!!! Nae maeum soge, JEOJANG!❤️

Seems like a pretty good season is underway. Flower Crew fills the romance that I come to kdramas for. I already love the premise of the love triangle. The casts for Camellia, Running Investigators and Pegasus Marker I LOVE...But on the other hand, you have goddess Kim Sun Ah in what sounds like a one woman tour de force...hmmm CHOICES...what's a girl to do when there's not enough time in the day?

I'm so looking forward to Pegasus Market and When the Camellia Blooms. I watched the first two episodes of Joseon Marriage Agency and I have to admit, I found it a little difficult to concentrate the entire way through, especially with episode 2. I'll probably keep watching because I think Gong Seungyeon is doing a great job and I LOVE Seo Jihoon, but I'm not sure (based on premiere week) if I'll keep going!

As I deal with MY COUNTRY availability angst I will definitely check out VAGABOND.
This will be my first Lee Seung-gi drama. I know Bae Suzy from WYWS. One hook drawing me in is the appearance of HAECHI’s Minister Min himself Lee Geung-young. The plot is MAD DOG(ish) a drama I really enjoyed.

O/T We are still feeling the loss of DramaFever and unfortunately (and I am a subscriber) OnDemandKorea has not filled DF’s shoes.

on their wedding day, Seo Ji-hoon suddenly disappears. It’s not a case of cold feet though, he was kidnapped and installed on the throne to be a puppet king.

The drama is makjang enough with just this line.

As for Secret Boutique, change the setting to Joseon and we'll have your standard ambitious palace maid scheming her way to replace the Queen. Jang Ok Jung 2.0

I can't wait to see Kim Ji Suk again, I know he's a pro at being a big baby

Love the wacky premise of Pegasus Market. Am all set to enjoy a befuddled Lee Dong-hwi and will think of this as the continuing career of Radiant Office's Ki-taek ^^

I'm going to go broke like this.
FLOWER CREW: Not bad. Though I'm not sure who is the main lead between Kim min jae and seo ji hoon.
WTCB: wanted to pass this one but now that I've read the synopsis, can't wait for it.
VAGABOND: I love the two leads. Suzy can't really act but she's improving. Its been a while I watched Lee Seung gi. I didn't watch his latest and I've been following Suzy since Dream High. Can't wait for it tho.
P.S in the poster for VAGABOND,Suzy is giving off a Lee Elijah vibe.
P.S.S who knows where to download kdramas from without using much data.
