Premier Watch: Perfume, Investigation Couple 2, Search Query: WWW

There are three new dramas on the slate for your viewing pleasure.

Perfume

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: KBS
Genre: Fantasy, rom-com
Episode count: 32 episodes

Reasons to watch: What happens when a frustrated fashion designer meets a new muse? If you’re Shin Sung-rok, you hire her as your housekeeper before persuading her to be a model. Said housekeeper-turned-model, Go Won-hee isn’t just any beautiful young woman though. She was once an unhappy, middle aged housewife whose homemaking skills were unparalleled. After a terrible event takes place in her life, a mysterious perfume gives her a second chance at life and love by reviving her in the form of a model-level, twenty-something beauty. I’m eager to see Go Won-hee and Shin Sung-rok in action and I can see them adding an extra level of fun zaniness to an already kooky premise.

Investigation Couple 2

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Crime procedural
Episode count: 32 episodes

Reasons to watch: Continuing the multi-season trend for dramas, Investigation Couple is back with season two and it will pick up where last season’s cliffhanger left off. Our old favorites have returned, as Jung Jae-young and Jung Yumi will be reprising their roles as a genius medical examiner and prosector respectively. This season will see Oh Man-seok’s role much-expanded this time around, as the third angle of the investigative triangle. If you’re a fan of season one, or you’re just in the mood for a crime procedural, tune in to watch our intrepid investigators solve horrific crimes.

Search Query: WWW

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Romance
Episode count: 16 episodes

Reasons to watch: Despite being on the verge of a romance overload generally, the strong cast for this one has caught my attention. Im Soo-jung, Lee Da-hee, and Jeon Hye-jin will play a trio of high achievers who work at two of Korea’s top portal websites. The drama will follow the highs–and lows–of their love lives. Jang Ki-yong plays a computer music company CEO and when he walks into Im Soo-jung’s life, the two develop an attraction to each other that’s hard to fight. His character seems like a bit of a dreamer and since I’ve quite literally never seen Jang Ki-yong in a light role, I’m looking forward to seeing him being fluffy and cute with alongside a kickass and self-possessed Im Soo-jung.

I'm not convinced that Jang Ki-young won't turn out to be a clone. There must be at least two of him. Does he ever sleep?! Talk about making hay while the sun shines. ;-)

Reasons why Investigation Couple 2 seems much better than the first season: (i) Instead of last season's ham-fisted "establishing" of characters (which, in the case of the female lead, felt more like character assassination), Episodes 1-2 jumped right into a couple of interesting crimes. (ii) While the show made prosecutors look moronic and/or unethical last season, we've now got the excellent Oh Man-seok to defend their honour. (iii) One of the best things about the show is that we get to watch Jung Jae-young's eternally and justifiably pissed-off forensic examiner endure hell, e.g. moronic prosecutors (see above), makjang plot lines, shingles, poisoned rats, etc. By the end of yesterday's first hour, he's already had to do something really undignified and disgusting. FANTASTIC.

Oh man, I couldn't even finish episode 2 of season 1, but you're description of Jung Jae-young's pissed-off face makes me want to pick it up and plow through so I can get to season 2.

Um... Jung Jae-young is one of my favourite actors of all time, but I'd still suggest skipping season 1 entirely. It's not without its merits (e.g. JJY's acting, some realistic and complex cases), but to get to them you have to wade through a lot of strangely amateurish writing, directing and acting. Season 2 is not great either (especially in contrast with the preceding drama Special Labour Inspector Jo, which ran like a well-oiled sports car), but so far it seems a lot more bearable than season 1.

Jung Jae-young is also one of my favorite actors, too! Kind of sad that his drama is sort of "eh," especially since it was popular enough to get a second season. Maybe I'll just watch highlights from the show, then. Thanks for the reply!

Some might notice how excited I was waiting for Perfume 🤭. Finally it aired!!

And... it won't be everyones cup of tea. It wasn't even mine. I had reservations for the drama from the initial plot release. But I watched anyway because Shin Sung Rok! Obviously. Haha. With that said, I hope Go Won Hee/Ha Jae Suk character has more confidence in herself. The perfume won't last forever. I like the acting so far, not really a fan of the plot. It does have funny moments, also some not funny but expected to be funny moments *side eyes bursting seams 🙄😏*.

But I'll stay for now. I've been waiting for SSR's 1st lead role~ and he is confident with his choice, I hope it goes his way. I also like Go Won Hee. Hopefully as the story progress it will have more substance and meaning along with the funny stuff. One can hope. It's only ep 1. Lol

I watched a bit, then I ran off to finish my book. I heard his voice, it's so deep and I hadn't realised how much I missed him. Going to finish it later. He's so flamboyant. The show reminds me a bit of a Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands kind of story, quirky, with that funny, circus music playing in the background.
I'm going to watch that tribal love too, in the Ar... Chronicles, can't remember what it's called, the whole week has been a crazy blur of Hyuk, and a lot of crazy voices talking in my head. I think I've developed split multiple personality disorder writing my story...help 😣😣😣😣

I'm tired of eccentric Shin Sung-rok. In Return after The Last Princess, he played the same kind of character. So in this one, he will be nice but, I want to see him in more normal or serious role.

I'm ready for the 3 women in Search Query : www, they look badass :D

Investgation Couple 2 started pretty strong, I'm in !

Hiiiiii @pakalanapikake how r u. Haha yeah Jang Kiyong and Choi Wooshik are both amazing actors that they really delivered the characters (and scenes) well without reservations. It wouldn't have been so funny if not for their dedication to character. How I wish it were a longer series. But I don't complain I just mention it to others so they can see a different side of JKY. Excited to see ep 1 of this WWW!
Anyways, I haven't kept up with Nokdu recaps but I'm still watching that great drama ^^

I must have misread the original premise re Perfume, because what's described now sounds really silly, and not like anything I'd ever be interested in. Probable pass. But Search Query WWW sounds possibly interesting, and so does Investigation Couple 2, although for IC2, I'd have to watch the first season before beginning the second one.

I'm still trying to emotionally recover from the fabulousness that is Nirvana in Fire, which has to be one of the best dramas ever made. Just mentioning makes me tear up a bit!

I know! Sob! He was such a beautiful character. And I even accept the ending as the only appropriate one - anything else would have been a false note in a perfect drama.

I’m watching NiF 2 now, and enjoying it much more than I expected (although I wish I could find a chart explaining the connections of the NiF2 characters to the NiF1 characters. The names used are slightly different if I look at the character lists for each on Wiki). My only complaint about NiF2 so far is that the Evil Priest is so hideous and icky that I can’t stand to look at him when he’s on the screen, and am very tempted to FF, just to get him out of my sight, but don’t want to miss any of the story. Why couldn’t he be a more attractive villain?!

You could try medicating with the translation of the NIF novel by star-shadows if you cannot read it in Chinese. She just posted chapter 108 today. Yippee!
https://langyascribe.wordpress.com/2019/05/05/chapter-108-parting/

I haven't gotten to NIF2, and won't until the dust has truly settled. As for ugly villains, this might be a rare instance of drama truth in advertising, or "what you see is what you get." Oh, wait. Maybe he's really a good guy suffering under a curse?! Or maybe he's the token mere mortal in the cast. ;-)

Ooh I love NIF. I don’t think any other drama comes close to it I’m terms of quality. I think I need a rewatch.

I couldn’t stand the evil priest in NIF2 either.

Little TV Chosun gave us a wonderful production in GRAND PRINCE. Thanks for the pointer to JOSEON SURVIVAL. It looks really interesting but alas probably won’t be available subbed.
Please Viki, you licensed GP, think about licensing JOSEON SURVIVAL.
I have pretty much given up on being able to watch OCN’s upcoming drama WATCHER. Then again after a delay Viki did license OCN’s KILL IT. Requests to Viki here:

I caught the first two episodes this past week, and watched ep. 3 raw this morning on TV Chosun's live stream:

I am immensely relieved that there have been no brain fetus manifestations so far. It's goofy and I like it.

Thanks! I have yet to watch Ep. 3.
*SPOILER ALERT* I could do without the serial killer but it’s also hilarious that he’s on the time-travelling truck too. I wonder if that is ToD posing as an innocent delivery truck.

1

Lol @wishfultoki. 2 thoughts:
1. I maybe wrong but I believe the delivery company Jung-rok works for is named “Lotte”. Lotte is a huge Korean corporation so the truck may be a ppl in a way;
2. That being said they may not look kindly to their product being used by ToD to go undercover to do its dirty deed. Then again they might not be to pleased to see their product carrying a psycho. I think it is too early to say for sure if he is a serial killer a la SWDBS. He probably is.

1

Required fields are marked *

@marcusnyc20
1. Yes I also thought the truck was the vehicle for some Lotte PPL. Maybe ToD applied for the role to change his negative image.
2. Hmm yes it’s too early to tell if he’s a serial killer. Let’s say he’s a psycho with issues.
3. How do you feel about hijacking this thread to discuss this drama or just laugh at the goofiness? @pakalanapikake would you be interested? I don’t think DB will recap it since it doesn’t even show on the list of currently airing dramas or weekly ratings reports.

1

We could also hijack the original exclusion news post on Joseon Survival: http://www.dramabeans.com/2019/06/threes-a-crowd-in-time-traveling-sageuk-comedy-joseon-survival-guide/

It’s not even mentioned in this premiere watch post!

1

@wishfultoki,
I think it is a great idea to plant the JS flag somewhere to share comments.
I think the 6 June news post may be the better place. It is "cleaner" in the sense that JOSEON SURVIVAL is the topic of the post.

1

Apologies @wishfultoki. The date for the JOSEON SURVIVAL news post is 1 June 2019 (not 6 June). I will see you over there if that is ok.

Let's hope WWW gives us some strong women lead! It seems to be marketed as such at least...

Thanks for the Premiere Watch, @stroopwafel! It prompted me to sneak a peek at the raw first episode of PERFUME for Shin Sung-rok's leading role. Has the sun risen in the west?! He's not The Villain?!? This looks like fun. I was surprised and delighted to see Ha Jae-suk, who is also currently appearing in MY ABSOLUTE BOYFRIEND. She was great in BEAUTIFUL MIND.

I love Oh Man-seok to bits, but can't deal with a crime procedural right now, especially a gory one, so will have to pass on INVESTIGATION COUPLE 2. On the other hand, I could finally watch him in SHIN DON. ;-)

The prospect of Jang Ki-yong in a light, fluffy role in the wake of COME HERE AND HUG ME and KILL IT is very enticing. I'll try to sneak a peek.

O/T @pakalanapikake,
I hope you don’t mind an Ha Jae-suk memory from ABM. HJS’s Nurse Jang is in conversation with Dr. Lee (Jang Hyuk) and she does a spot on imitation of him right to his face and he of no emotions responds: “Don’t push your luck”. I loved it. That was a great show.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo,
That was a great moment! Thanks for reminding me of it. I loved the entire cast of BEAUTIFUL MIND. Jang Hyuk and Heo Jun-ho were intense and terrific. Jang Ki-yong played Nurse Nam -- and ended up in a rematch with a different kind of psychopath in COME HERE AND HUG ME. ;-)

Love that the pilot episode of WWW focused on the women. I mean, I know that it’s about them but it was refreshing to see women being the focus of the drama.
