Premiere Watch: The Wind Blows, Arthdal Chronicles

Epic sorrow and epic action await us in our two latest dramas.

The Wind Blows

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Melo, romance
Episode count: 16 episodes

Reasons to watch: Could it be second time’s the charm for the leading couple in The Wind Blows? Kam Woo-sung and Kim Haneul star as two people who never quite fell out of love–despite a divorce. The pair are happily married when a shocking Alzheimer’s diagnosis prompts Kam Woo-sung to suddenly divorce Kim Haneul. It’s meant as an act of love, so as not to burden his wife, but the effects are devastating for both of them. Just a few years later, the former couple meet again and realize their love for each other never faded. My love for the Kam-Kim duo is such that it’s overcome my slight aversion for melos. (I get way too invested and depressed while watching them–I’m still recovering from Hundred Million Stars!) Of course, if you love melos you know you’ll be in good hands with Kam Woo-sung and Kim Haneul as your leads.

Arthdal Chronicles

Time slot: Saturday & Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy, historical
Episode count: 18 episodes

Reasons to watch: The long-awaited epic saga Arthdal Chronicles is finally here! Set against the backdrop of ancient Korea, the drama will tell a fictionalized version of the founding of Korea’s Gojoseon Kingdom. The fantasy drama boasts a star-studded cast, with the main players–Jang Dong-gun, Kim Ok-bin, Song Joong-ki, and Kim Ji-won–facing off and creating alliances in the struggle to establish their claim to power. While our protagonists make war and try to survive, who will ultimately rule? While I was, and still am, looking forward to watching the drama, the teasers had me a bit concerned. The style all looked a bit too liberally “borrowed” from Game of Thrones. But I’m ever the optimist; with PD Kim Won-seok (My Ajusshi) and such a phenomenal cast, it can’t hurt to expect the best, right?

I think i watched up til ep 4 or 5 on that. The episodes up until there were so fun to watch and i agree, the leads are super cute! But then as the show show went on from there, i was just worried the show would get cliche with Jung Galhee pretending to be Veronica Park. I understand that everyone has different opinions but do you think it's just getting a bit cliche or are the producers executing it well?

Like everyone else here I recommend The Secret Life of my Secretary and Angel's Last Mission.
Though I'm tentatively holding my breath with ALM - we are only two episodes in and who knows what will happen half way through the series.
But right now they are both great!

Maybe if I just go into Arthdal the way I went into Hwayugi it will be fine.
Id est: this may, all cast and crew reputation aside, just hop aboard the fast boat to Hell and Magnificent Burning Trainwreck in less than two episodes, but if I watch it with several pints of ice cream and my fantasy sageuk hat on, I might enjoy myself anyway and it will be fine?.And with that PD and writer, anything is possible right.
Right?

...

Narrator voice in 6 weeks from now, probably:
But it was not fine.

...
Ah, @#$% me, I'ma watch it anyway.

Me: I'm a sucker for couples who get back together - at least the Noble Idiocy is out of the way before the drama starts. Maybe I should watch this.
Also me: It's going to end in tears, don't don it!
Me: but I love Kim Haneul and Kam Woo-sung
Also me: Remember shall we kiss first ? Just think back to that. Now do you still want to watch this?
Me: Okay. Okay. You convinced me.

Noble idiocy? Alzheimer? I already watching a lot of love stories : SF with a robot, Fantasy with an angel, a rom-com with Her Private Life, a realistic one with One Spring Night. I'm not sure I want to add a very sad one...

It's funny, it's kind of schedule reunion between A Gentlemen of Dignity's Kim Ha Neul and Jang Dong Gun :p

A plot that starts with Noble Idiocy- ha ha ha.
Neither of these interest me but I will check out Arthdal since beanie wall would be fun :)
Not sure who in the US is picking it up.

How does one access a show's beanie wall? I have failed to figure it out 😵 Could you perhaps share the link of any show as an example?

Not really. You just have to check the Beanies section on the day the show airs or follow the wall on a daily basis.

@mayhemf here is actually just referencing the Beanie fanwall (http://www.dramabeans.com/beanies/), like a twitter or facebook feed of all the posts Beanies make on their own walls.

As for a show's "Wall"-
So the easiest way is to find somewhere where the show is tagged directly. Either in an article about it (at the bottom are the tags), or in the currently airings on the side I find work best.
If it is an older show with no current articles, search the name of the show in the top bar and it will come up with all articles under that show's tag.
This doesn't usually bring you to the direct "wall page", so you have to find the tag in an article- it will bring you to the direct page.

The other option is to go into RECAPS to find it in the ratings or recap archive.

Show's don't have a "wall page" before they're airing, just an article tag search. Thus Arthdal doesn't have a proper page yet.
Here is what a show's "Wall" looks like:

I have just realised that you are asking if there is a place where beanies can congregate specifically about a show in an open wall post situation? Correct? Sorry I answered you literally haha.

Alas not. I wish Dramabeans had tagging of shows like that, so that you could just search a show by its tag on the beanie wall as well as articles about it, but it doesn't.
There's just it's "page" like on IMDB or Letterboxd. But no specific beanie wall comments linked to that directly.

Hope this makes sense.

Hashtags would be nice.

1

@leetennant yeah.
An open comment thread on each show's "wall page" would be nice too. For shows that don't have recaps. Maybe unnecessary since Beanies find a way to do this but still. Open Comment Season lol.

Actually a way to find your comments on other people's walls would be nice too.

2

@sicarius but I also quite like that what I write on someone else's wall kind of disappears. I don't know. It makes it more like a normal conversation. (Is that weird?)

But I totally agree with you on having an Open Thread for each show that isn't recapped

4

@cloggie yes that is one good thing about it... I just have a situation right now where I need to find a specific post of a person I don't remember to find the article they posted, and find exactly what I said in response to it but scrolling through couple hundred pages of fanwall is... uh... a mission...

3

@sicarius google search often does a good job on this ;-) I've found stuff back.

1

@cloggie
Ahh duh the one thing I haven't tried... thanks for reminding me of that route.

2

An IRC channel could be nice :)

Thanks a bunch for making that clear. I thought a show's wall was where beanies commented about it, other than the recaps...

That's why I don't want to start it yet. Multi-season dramas are part of the reason I am mostly watching kramas these days. Too bad they are also going that way.

They are going for the suspense to kill audiences on anticipation. Haha. I hate it they split it to 3 part. I though it will be like 18 episode in 1 season when the idea of make it multi season appeared.. I'm abit dissapoint. Lol. And I'm abit worried a multi season will make it a turn off for korean drama watcher in Korea. I want to watch it later. But it's my biased, so I have to watch it no matter what. Lol

Well well I hope it will does well for Song Joong Ki's sake. It's his first project on cable channel if I'm not mistaken. Well at least not as a cameo.

Arthdal Chronicles is airing 12 episodes. Seasons 1 and 2 are airing back-to-back. Season 3 airs two months later.

Part 1: The Children of Prophecy: June 1 to June 16
Part 2: The Sky Turning Inside Out, Rising Land): June 22 to July 7
Part 3: Arth, The Prelude to All Legends): September 7 to September 22

Hmm. What is the point of separating Part 1 and 2 then?

In this day and age of streaming and binge watching they would have been better off airing it all at once. Unless it's real gripping (a very tall order these days) the wait will probably kill and excitement the viewer has rather than heighten it.

I'll check out both, but Arthdal is what im excited most about. I'm hoping the utter swagger jack of Game of Thrones is minimal, because its actually silly now watching the previews and pictures, lol.

Super hard pass on The Wind Blows. I remember SWKF, and nopity nope.

I'll probably watch Arthdal mostly because I'm very curious to see why they have styled this drama to combine Dances With Wolves, Game of Thrones, and the male lead's perm from Blue Lagoon.

Thanks god, i'm not the only one who think Arthdal is somewhat too simillar with Game of Thrones. When i watch Kim Ok Bin's teaser, i got a feeling that she is the Cersei of this story. Well, maybe i can like that, as long as she cant be defeated so easily by a brick...

I wonder what it is about Arthdal Chronicles that attracted its star studded cast. Maybe it's its director and writer? In my opinion, it's very rare that Korean dramas can be both serious and yet have a fantasy element in it. Hopefully this is one of those rare ones!

Whoops totally meant to say that I hope it's one of those rare dramas that can pull both elements off and not be cheesy!

I have moved from probably to definitely will watch the early episodes of ARTHDAL CHRONICLES.
This will be my first Soon Joong-ki drama and I must be one of the few on the planet that doesn’t know a thing about GAME OF THRONES so that will not be an issue for me.
I enjoyed Jang Dong-gun in the under appreciated SUITS and I know “Safari” Choi Moo-sung is in the cast so that is good.
So far I have enjoyed the comments about the costumes being worn.

You're not alone with game of thrones. I never watched it so I don't know anything much about it. I assume its a story about people battling for a throne from the title 😅.

With the writing and production clout behind Arthdal Chronicles, I will have to check this out.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for The Wind Blows. While I like both leads, I'm not particularly enthusiastic about seeing Kam Woo-sung in yet another drama where either he or someone close to him is facing an illness.
