Premiere Watch: My Absolute Boyfriend

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Rom-com, sci-fi
Episode count: 36 episodes (35 minute episodes)

My Absolute Boyfriend is one drama I feared would never see the light of day, but premiere week is finally here. Adapted from a Japanese manga, this sci-fi rom-com features Minah as a talented makeup artist who specializes in special effects work. When we meet her, she’s sworn off love after getting her heart broken by Hong Jong-hyun, an A-list celeb. One day she unexpectedly receives a package in the mail–an unbelievably life-like robot, Yeo Jin-gu. As she inadvertently activates him and brings him to life as an absolutely dedicated boyfriend, she wrestles with what love means exactly and idea of falling in love with a robot. What’s more, as K-drama ex-boyfriends often are, Hong Jong-hyun is on the periphery of Minah and Yeo Jin-gu’s budding relationship and he’s not quite over Minah. The director-writer duo is PD Jung Jung-hwa (Flower Boy Next Door, Flower Boy Ramyun Shop) and Yang Hyuk-moon, (Mirror of the Witch).

Whenever it takes a show a prolonged period of time to find a home at a network, I worry that it indicates a lack of quality. BUT the creative team behind My Absolute Boyfriend looks good, so I will hold my breath and hope for the best. At the very least, if you like robots and rom-coms, give the show a watch.

It sounds like a remake of I am not a Robot, but with a girl instead of a guy falling for the robot.

Its not a remake of I am not a Robot, actually this is an adaptation of Zettai Kareshi (2003) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absolute_Boyfriend

I think this is a waste of Jingoo’s talent, but he wants to be in a romcom badly for the experience. Good for him. He seemed to have fun with it. Probably hard for him to date in real life so it can compensate a bit.

I would've love for him to take a break too and this is coming from a self proclaimed fan-girl!
I'll probably skip this one like REUNITED WORLDS.

He needs to get some rest and maybe get a vacation for fun. He’s been filming nonstop, with variety shows and ambassador work to fill the gaps, AND in college at the same time. Romcom can wait.

Well, could have... he finished it already.

It’s a waste of his talent and time but I will watch because he put in the effort already.

I think he is abit too passionate with his work. He is like everywhere, just like any other actor with alot of supporting roles under their belt in year, the different is he is taking a leading roles, which is abit insane lol.

My only interest is can the girl end up with the human for a change? Since you've seen the Japanese version, did she end up with the human or the robot?

SPOILER

I've read the manga YEARS ago so I don't know for the drama... but in the manga, the robot leaves and she ends up with the human whom she never dated initially (different from the drama)... But frankly I thought it was badly done. The human deserved to get the girl in the manga from the beginning, she just wasn't confident enough and they missed their timing. At the end, it just felt like the human boyfriend got some crumbles of feelings from her. No I'm not a huge fan of Zettai Kareshi. Hope it's done better there.

I LOVED the manga-ka and this was one of her weakest endings (I've read all her stories, including the never-translated ones). It was too abrupt. She had set it up from the beginning that the human neighbor would end up with her eventually, but I think dragged out the robot romance because of fan reactions. In the end, she didn't leave herself enough time to develop the human romance, and just relied on a time-skip to explain away the skimpy romance. IF this drama is smart it'll pick a romance (hopefully human!) and make it believable. Yuu Watase really did write some wonderful characters for this story, she just let them down in the manga's second act.

I've never managed to finish any of her manga to be honest EXCEPT that one >_< I didn't know the backstory regarding the fans... Well, every time you create a love story with a robot... it's difficult because some of us, of whom are part of, simply reject the idea. So from the very beginning I rejected the idea of the absolute boyfriend no matter how sweet he was... especially since her neighbor was a very good guy. Had he been an asshole that would have been a different story. It's probably why they put this breakup story here because it would be difficult to be supportive of the robot from the beginning if from the get go we have a very sweet tsundere living next door.

Well we'll see how it goes. I'm not holding my breath. I'm going to wait for the beanies to give their opinion before marathoning.

You'd think the moral of the story would be accept the human, flaws and all. A perfect robot would eventually be - boring.

2

In the Japanese version, she did end up with the human aka her boss who likes her amd supported her relationship with the robot bf until, ofcourse, the robot has reached its limit. It's the reason why the lead actress and the 'robot' had another drama with diff story and so just to satisfy the fans frustration.

I want to see Yeo Jin Goo to be pair with Kim Yoo Jung again, now that they're both Adults. They had chemistry when they are paired as young versions of the leads I want to see them now that they are both grown ups and I can see their resemblance to each other. Hope they'll have a chance to work with each other again. They're both great acting wise but these days they're getting a so-so drama. Mina is good in Beautiful Gongs him maybe because Nam Goong Min is older than her so the pairing is okay. I like Zettai Karashi so hope they did a good job in remaking this drama.

I have robot fatigue. Also (don’t kill me anyone) I have Yeo Jin Goo fatigue, since I tried but failed to finish THE CROWNED CLOWN.
BUT I have been waiting for so long for Hong Jong-Hyun and Minah to reunite after VAMPIRE IDOL that I need to try it at least. Therefore, the plan is to wait for 4 episodes, binge them and decide if I’ll continue. If HJH is just a meddling second lead I’m dropping it fast.

No I'm not.
Also I just remembered that that Gojoseon Fantasy Sageuk thing is coming out soon too and I was already planning on watching that no matter how trash it is also...
why do we have such full trash watching schedules.

4

My trash watching schedule is too full. I can't lose my shit at that silly show as well. Mind you, it has Train Wreck tattooed on it in giant neon letters - even more than Absolute Boyfriend does. But I need to manage my number of crash and burns this year.

1

Fantasy sageuks are kind of my crack. And I don't get enough of them. And the crew and cast is a draw even if what I've seen of the show is questionable. So I will start it at least.
Manage them? MANAGE them??? There is no managing them. There's just one long endless downward spiral. RIP me. It's May and I've watched one fully good drama this year.

3

See this is why I took a hiatus from DB and rabbit. Because I end up being talked into watching fifteen shows that I know will be terrible.

We have had some good shows this year - Boksoo, Children of Nobody, Sky Castle, The Light In Your Eyes.

0

Yeah somehow I keep missing the good dramas like Sky Castle (even though I intended to watch that from the beginning and then just didn't for no decent reason) and just watch mindless shit I end up ranting about.
Gosh I have issues. Frakking hell.

2

The premise sounds good and I hope it is funny and cute to watch.
Maybe it struggled to get an airdate since the premise is similar to Are you human? As we know in k-dramaland you can end up with a robot and even your family will be happy about it. lol
I hope it is not too cheesy though. Him being 100% devoted to her can be cute but also maybe too annoying to see.

I never knew I'd say this but Yeo Jin Goo being cute can be annoying!

Okay, I love the guy in Circle and then Reunited Worlds happened. In the Crowned Clown, I also prefer the King to the Clown. So maybe I just like tormented puppy and not an ever grinning one?

So much negativity in the comment section!
(I respect your opinions though, no need to argue)

I for one am super excited to finally see this!
I do feel slightly worried because it took so long to be picked up and - like Stroopwafel said - that could indicate lack of quality... but I'm excited to see another Yeo JinGoo drama and a new robot drama so I'll just hope for the best ^_^

I read the manga back in the day and couldn't get behind the robot relationship. But then I watched Are You Human Too last year and that had me questioning this whole concept with Shinnamon's adorable-ness. Hopefully, Jingoo can pull it off as well.

it's actually super cute? ridiculously clumsy and has zero artistic value but it seems to know what it is and idk I'm already very endeared by the story. it's garbage, but a garbage from a build-a-bear store. you can roll in it without worrying about getting hurt.

Yey! The rain to end my long long kdrama drought! I´ve been waiting for Minah´s comeback for ages, and the first ep didn´t disappoint:) I like how it starts out a lot darker and wackier than the Japanese version (which I dropped after first ep), and I´m already eagerly on board for our female-lead to get some well-deserved perfect boyfriend time, crazy antics and denials included.
