IU, Yeo Jin-gu confirm lead roles in Hong sisters fantasy drama

I have. So. Many. Feelings about this news. On the one hand, we’ve got a lead pairing that I love in IU (My Ajusshi) and Yeo Jin-gu (The Crowned Clown). On the other, they’re starring in the newest show from the Hong sisters, the tvN drama Hotel del Luna. Now, don’t get me wrong, I was (am?) the biggest fan of many of these writers’ works, but I’ve been burned several times over the years and I don’t know whether my heart can take another disappointment.

I’m crossing all my fingers and all my toes though, because I’m intrigued by the plot description: The titular Hotel del Luna, located in the middle of Seoul, looks to all the world to be an old and dilapidated building. However, it holds a glamorous interior, one that the living can’t enjoy because the hotel only caters to ghostly clientele. Interestingly enough, this project was conceived by the Hong sisters way back in 2013, and was an early-stage concept that later developed into their hit Master’s Sun.

IU will play the owner of Hotel del Luna, who is bound to the establishment for committing a grave sin a very long time ago. She sounds like quite a character too, described as fickle, suspicious, and greedy, all topped with a healthy dose of a horrible temper and a tendency to sulk. She’ll be joined by a new hotel manager in Yeo Jin-gu’s character, who unexpectedly ends up at Hotel del Luna following a meteoric rise to become the youngest-ever hotel assistant manager of an international chain. A perfectionist to the highest degree (i.e. obsessive compulsive), Yeo Jin-gu’s character appears rational and logic-driven on the surface, but is described as a pushover with a faint heart. Yikes, how’s he ever going to stand up to IU?

For Hotel del Luna, the Hong sisters are teaming up with director Oh Choong-hwan, who has some solid credits to his name in Doctors and While You Were Sleeping. I’ve only watched parts of each show, but I do recall the cinematography being gorgeous in both, so I’ll be eager to see whether he adds a little directorial, aesthetic flair to Hotel del Luna.

Hotel del Luna doesn’t have a slot just yet but will air on tvN sometime in the latter half of this year. (Please be good, please be good, please be good…)

You gotta understand the system so that you can game it. Life's hard enough! Make yourself happy, easier!

I'm someone who goes and watches movies without seeing the trailer or the blurb or reviews, and trust me, it's always and AWESOME experience when you have no idea what the show is about.

But I also love B grade horror movies so maybe my bar is pretty low anyway. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is one of my favourites.

Was bored out of my mind for Hwayugi... I personally love both actors especially Yeo Jin Gu so I'm going to take a risk on this one... But I'm going with 0 expectations... The only dramas I really liked ( and not love) from her were "Couple or Trouble, "Sassy Girl Choon Hyang" and "My Girl"... (Nope I didn't particularly enjoy "Master's Sun" either but I did watch it for the leads... their humor is really hit or miss for me)
Yeah, they all date back to 13 years ago or more, so I can definitely say as far as expectations go, It's below level 0 at this point.

If an actor vows to only do 'My Ajusshi'-level dramas they'll starve to death. Because how many projects per decade would be up for the comparison? I wonder what Lee Sun-kyun is going to do for his next project.

So this is another fantasy/supernatural drama by the Hong sisters.

I really like the leads, but I’m disappointed with the writers. The actors can act the hell out of the drama, but they can’t save it if the writing sucks. Yeo Jin Gu’s character description doesn’t sound great. And IU’s character sounds very unlikable.

I don't like this director. His motto seems to be that everything must be pretty but he can't save a bad script which I have a strong feeling will be the case with the Hong Sisters. I don't know why IU of all people picked this as a comeback. She was so good in her last drama I thought she would do something with Noh Hee Kyung next. YJG seriously just needs to take a break. This is 3rd drama in a year and his 7th drama as lead since the debacle that was Orange Marmalade in 2015. His last drama was finally a success I thought he would take this victory to relax a little now. His love for acting is commendable.

After TCC I'm not very impressed with Jingoo's romance scenes (sorry buddy), so would rather not watch him in what will inevitably be a romance plot, and because I haven't watched My Ahjussi, the only thing I've seen IU in is Scarlet Heart Ryeo which left a lasting impression of not the good kind. Combine that with the Hong Sisters, who, whilst I liked Hwayugi more than it deserved, can't really hold a story together these days, and debatably were never good (despite my initial opinions of their dramas)... thus the likely hood of this going down hill into a pile of trash? High.
But it will probably be oh so fun to watch that happen and I do like campy fantasy. 😂😂😂
Dunno if I'll tune in for this or just sit on the sidelines with popcorn...

I swear that Jingoo has something in his contract about romance scenes. They're consistently weird. I wonder if it's coming from him or from his agency who are worried about his "Nation's Dongsaeng" image. I'm not surprised they were bad in TCC, despite the role feeling like an image breakout.

@kurama, I haven't seen Potato Star. I looked it up in MDL and it's a whopping 120 episodes so I doubt that's happening any time soon.

I've never seen Jingoo do a romantic scene that wasn't weird. But I haven't seen his entire filmography obviously.

1

@leetennant I was talking about "All kisses must be close-mouthed pecks with no lip movement." The drama itself was pretty weird but he had a kiss scene pretty soon in the story (the end of the world clearly accelerated things :p) He was only 16-17 years old.

3

I can't for the life of me remember any good kisses in dramaland (inc C drama). Please name me some to watch.

1

@linda-palapala

Witch's Romance right near the beginning
There's several in Another Oh Hae Young
Several in Boksoo
And INAR of course of course.

I'm sure there's many more but these are the ones off the top of my head.

I haven't see many C dramas, as you know, but there were a few that weren't bad in the first season I Cannot Hug you.

5

@linda-palapala
I have a playlist of Kdrama kisses I like... *Ahem* I guess it depends on what makes a good kiss to you though. Most Kdrama kisses have an awful amount of cut scenes and bad editing, but you do get some good ones.

4

@linda, ROmanitic Doctor Teacher Kim, WWWSK, Pretty Noona, BTLIOF, QIHM, 20th Century Boy/Girl. To name a few. But I agree with OHY too.

7

How has nobody mentioned Chicago Typewriter... tsk

7

@linda-palapala Just to add on to the train of good kisses, I also enjoyed the kiss scenes in Oh My Ghostess, I Can Hear Your Voice, and anything Park Seo-joon is in. May I also emphasize Chicago Typewriter again after @sicarius.

1

@sicarius You have a playlist? Please share...
Do you have Hyun Bin's longest kiss in history from Late Autumn?
Any Ethan Juan (Ruan) kiss is worth looking at.

3

Good Soup and Good Smooches: Yang Se-jong in TEMPERATURE OF LOVE (even if noona Seo Hyun-jin was a cold fish in the beginning).

QUEEN IN-HYUN'S MAN had the best Kdrama smooches I'd seen up until that point.

OH HAE-YOUNG AGAIN -- especially when Kim Ji-suk was trapped behind the sofa.

4

Since we seem to be straying to other actor related kisses...

One kiss that still stands out to me all these years later is the "Game Over" kiss from Personal Taste. If one finds dolly cam shots distracting, then it'd likely not be to one's own personal taste. ;)

3

@kurama

IKR? Clearly @sicarius and @leetennant haven’t seen Potato Star 😂.

Don’t blame Jingoo for reserved direction. The kid has/had talent but was shot down by viewer complaints/concerns.

2

@linda-palapala I can share it later if you like pfffft
@geliguolu
I went and watched it because she mentioned it lol. That's why I decided bellow or above or whereever it is on this thread that the fault lies elsewhere than just with Jingoo for any scenes that ARE awkward and pecking. Even if I'm being a brat and teasing him for not being able to do romance scenes lol

4

I haven't seen Que Sera Sera mentioned...

Oh definitely. It does feel like Jingoo wasn't able to fully just ACT in those scenes, whether that was a restriction placed on him by the writing, directing or himself. ( I sometimes got the sense he was trying to be respectful of LSY. And/or honor his character that was supposed to be the epitome of pure morals). Whereas the Cray performance demanded a sort of wildness and lack of control, so he was able to just live in it and not worry about going too far.

(I miss Cray)

Pffahahaha oh is it THAT obvious is it... my insanity... :P

*you wanna know a secret... of course you do. I felt the characters were too controlled and Jingoo was never able to just ACT as the Clown. The Clown's best moments were when he was pretending to be cRAY cRAY*
(I miss Cray too. So much. *sobs* Why are all my favourite characters from dramas with sub par endings and writing. Le sigh)

6

@sicarius

Never forget, I've heard the insanity in real time. (And it was glorious. )

Hm, yes. I can see Jingoo having a hard time connecting with such an unrealistic character, and so he did his best to say the lines and do all the right motions, but there was no heart in it.

(Have you tried reading the good word of recaps? Counting gat beads? I hear the drama gods are fickle...)

I know of others who feel the same as you. I will say, Cray was his best and most mature performance. So if you ever get the inkling, maybe watch episode 8 just so you can say that you REALLY don't see it. XD

6

Lololololol! I hadn't seen him in anything prior to this myself.
Although him as the King really sold him quickly for me.

3

I like him a lot when he plays dark and complex roles, but meh are those simply kind-hearted and innocent ones. He played both of the types in Circle and TCC, in both times I’d say the darker character is much better acted than the other.

3

@bk201 Didn’t think he was dark in Circle, just not the innocent sunshine boy. But yes, I also found him intriguing in Royal Gambler, as a prince with so much baggage and ambition. While his innocent roles are not bad, it just underutilizes his talent.

3

their stories were hit and miss but l loved most of them anyway. they draw great actors that can carry a not to solid story and make you forget that. i am excited cause i love both IU and Yeo Jin Goo

And I cannot take disappointment from Lee ji eun, because after My Ajusshi, she like my best actress in the whole world... so I think I rather won't be watching.
Happily, it is a totally different drama from My Ajusshi... so...
We will see...

I wonder if it was IU who coaxed the Hong sisters to revive this project, or if it was the prospect of starring in a Hong sisters series that got IU to take the bait.

IU is good with broody characters. If this one is bubbly with some spunk (decribed as temperamental and occ sulky) then I'm afraid her acting will fall flat.

So the hotel is there for the dead, she is owning it because she was sentenced to do so because she committed a grave sin long ago and he will be the manager...sounds interesting.
Just by reading this it made me think that she is probably centuries old (à la Goblin), while he falls from grace and the only job he can find it at a hotel that to the human eye is falling apart?
Do we get some funny bits like Hotel Transilvania? ahahah

She's older than goblin. She's more than 1000 years old!

There's an excellent 1998 Japanese film (American title )'After Life' by the director of 'Shoplifters' that involved a hotel waystation to the afterlife staffed by people who, for one reason or another, can't pass on. It was a sweet sad little film.

Ok Hong Sisters' dramas tent to be both great and disappointing, usually I expect too much from them and they deliver or miss it. Master's Sun was amazing, a couple of things were not perfect, but wow it was so good and had So Ji Sub so that was a huge.HUGE. plus. Big was set to be so perfect yet the ending could have been so much better, the same with A Korean Odyssey and My Girlfriend Is a Nine-Tailed Fox. On the other hand The Greatest Love was so cute and lovely as well as You're beautiful and Sassy Girl Chun-hyang (one of my favorite dramas) and well My girl is a classic and no one can deny that. As for their other dramas I didn't watch them well just because.

This plot is intriguing, it has some of the Master's Sun vibe which I love, and also reminds me a lot of Xxx.Holic (a Japanese manga) which is a bout store where you could get your wishes fulfilled in exchange of a equivalent price, the owner is kinda trapped there and then a guy arrives to help her, I know is not exactly the same but has a similar feeling exchanging human clients for ghost ones, and well let's just say that CLAMP (the ones in charge of the manga) tent to pull some crazy stuff out all the time, and I so hope this drama has that same crazy feeling and well if the Hong sisters are in charge then it might. Again, I am not saying the drama is based on the manga or anything like that, have no idea if it is or not, just that it was similar vibe and I completely loved and hated that manga for so many reasons that a drama with a somehow close plot by the Hong Sisters is something I will not miss just to see if they pull out even more craziness lol.

I'm reminded more of Hotel California. Now that would be a great OST for the drama.

Hmm.."The titular Hotel del Luna, located in the middle of Seoul, looks to all the world to be an old and dilapidated building" .. and 'IU will play the owner of Hotel del Luna'? Reminds me of another shabby hotel and an owner who had a hard time figuring out the hero.. in the middle of Alhambra. :/

i reckon i'm one of the few but i did not like my ahjussi nor her acting in it at all and i generally cannot stand watching her (big fan of her music lol.) the age gap isn't weird i would just be lol cos her and i are around the same age and 21 yr old boys.

i haven't enjoyed a hong drama for a while. even master's sun i really didn't enjoy the progression BUT i love gong hyo jin and so ji sub together. lord have mercy we shall see

Is it so difficult to find Yeo Jin Gu someone his age? I can only think of Kim Yoo Jung or Kim So Hyun for now but am sure there are a lot of actresses his age. From Orange Marmalade, Reunited Worlds to the recent Crowned Clown, it's all Noonas. I don't mind really coz he's got some chem with them especially with Lee Se-young but not with the girl in Reunited World. I like IU and Jin Goo pairing but maybe after this he can work with either Kim Yoo Jung or Kim So Hyun.
Oh, but he's also got another drama pending with Minah of Girl's Day. Okay, I give up.. Haha
Whatever, Yeo Jin-goo, you do you.
