Kim Jae-wook, Park Min-young courted for fanboy and fangirl roles in new tvN rom-com

Actors Kim Jae-wook (The Guest) and Park Min-young (What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim) have both been offered parts in a new tvN rom-com drama, Her Private Life.

The drama is based on a popular web novel about a woman and a man who both lead double lives called Noona Fan Dot Com; written by Kim Sung-yeon. At work, the woman is a competent art curator, but at home she’s an avid idol fangirl. The man is an arrogant director of an art gallery when offline. Online, he’s a warm and friendly fanboy, but this fanboy persona is fake. It’s a story about fangirling/fanboying, and how embarrassing regrets and past glory days led the characters to become who they are in the present.

If Kim Jae-wook accepts, he will be playing the role of Ryan Gold – newly hired director of the art gallery. He’s a cynic with a prickly personality, and is aggrieved by the smallest mistakes. However, there’s something mysterious surrounding his character.

Park Min-young, if she accepts, will be playing Sung Deok-mi. By day, she’s one of the gallery’s top curators. Outside of work, her life’s purpose is her idol celebrity love.

Directing will be done by PD Hong Jong-chan whose past works include Dear My Friends, Most Beautiful Goodbye, and Life. He was also one of the directors for an old underrated drama, Tamra the Island.

It sounds like it might be standard rom-com material, but it could be a fun watch if done well. The director has worked on a lot of thoughtful pieces, so I think he’ll do a good job in showing depth to the story and fleshing out the characters. The subject matter is definitely relatable as I must confess that if Kim Jae-wook agrees to the part, I’ll be tuning in for sure.

tvN’s Her Private Life is currently being planned to air in April after Reach of Sincerity has ended.

I’m sorry I snorted at “Ryan Gold” what an unique name. This premise sounds super relatable bc I’m in that stage where fangirling is a way of life but also lowkey embarrassing. I might watch this one, but idk how well KJW will fit into a romcom style role hmm

I really love Kim jae-wook, but I'm starting to feel as if Park min-young is the only leading lady in the under 35 category. I think she's a great talent but honestly I'm tired of seeing her name attached to everything. I feel bad, am I the only one that feels this way?

No you're not. Honestly I am also a bit tired seeing her being part of so many romcoms. It hasn't been long since we had the secretary kim drama. I like kim jae wook and was excited about him being the male lead in a long time but sadly it's with park min young. I will have to wait I guess. :/ I wish he appeared in gong hyo jin's new drama.

I think PMY has been smart at picking projects so her dramas tend to leave strong impressions on us viewers. Prior to Secretary Kim she was in Seven Day Queen (2017) and Remember Son's War (2016) and neither was a rom com. But 2015's Healer perhaps could count as 3 dramas in terms of its impact on many Beanies!! 😆

But wasn't healer a thriller? I don't see it tagged anywhere as rom-com. (Neither was it, imo) Only Sec Kim was a rom com and the other seaguk rom-com she did before was way back in 2010: Sungkyunkwan Scandal and albeit the only other romance-comedy she did.
And Sec Kim was touted as her first proper rom com.
I am not so sure how you watched so many of her rom com when she did not do them.

Required fields are marked *

Yeah I agree. Neither two of her more popular dramas Healer and City Hunter was a rom com although many were enthralled by the "rom" aspect of those 2 dramas and there were certainly funny moments between the OTPs.

10

See I don't understand kdrama's tags of romcoms haha cause when I watched both seven day queen and healer, there were many many romance scenes, and whether it was a melo or a comedy, there was still a lot of romance. Pardon me for using the word rom-com, but what I meant is that she has been frequently appearing in many romance dramas. And secretary kim only happened like last year, 6-7months ago as far as I can remember. It's only my opinion of course, but I do want to watch more new faces lol.
And tbh, Remember was the only drama where I really liked her, and it seemed like she had a character to play and not just there as a pretty actress.

5

Required fields are marked *

*And I think we can all agree on this that, healer is primely a romance drama, something like Superman I guess.

5

No worries rom-com tag is for dramas whose main plot is romantic comedy, and sec kim is perfect example.
Healer is a thriller because that is what is the main plot and romance is a side plot.
But I agree that her main drama profile has all kind of romance dramas. Though she has a horror film to her credit:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cat_(2011_film)
I should check it out.

2

Aren't most kdramas romance dramas? Even when there is no need for romance, there is always a weirdly significant amount of time devoted to the romance.

I think what makes it seem like PMY is doing romance all the time is that she only seems to be doing almost all dramas while her contemporaries have a regular mix of dramas and movies (which have more variety). Even So Ji Sub has done back-to-back romances in the kdrama world for the past 5 years, but he's also done the movies, Battleship Island and The Throne.

5

@asianromance

I would say there are very very very rare dramas in which there is no romance and some older actress have done them after doing mainly romance dramas for years (more than 10 back to back romance dramas):
1. Kim Sun Ah in Children of nobody and Lady in dignity
2. Lee Bo Young in Mother.
3. Kim Hee sun Lady in Dignity.
I don't recall anyone else that I have ever watched and had no romance at all, if you want count Kang sora in misaeng, but it was not really her drama. She was a supporting character in it.
And Gong Hyo jin has done all romance dramas and is known as a queen of rom-com. She is wonderful in the.
On the other hand she has a lot of movies in which there is no romance, see Missing she was amazing in it.

2

I 'm not particularly a PMY fangirl, but I feel quite uneasy with "it seemed like she had a character to play and not just there as a pretty actress". I mean I watched I think almost all of her dramas (except Remember) but I don't think I remember her as being "just there to be pretty". True, she is pretty, but she is also a good actress. I dont' t think the fact that she is pretty means that she is "just there as a pretty actress" (although I'm not even sure what that means) and I don't think it should detract from the fact that she is a good actress.

3

@lexyk, it's my personal opinion, of course, you don't have to take it so seriously.:) My comment was mainly based on her role on secretary Kim, where it didn't seem like she had much to do. And like I said, I liked her more in remember cause there she played a lawyer and had tons to do professionally, so I felt like she left an impression on me, unlike her other characters. But like I said, that's only how I feel. I realize her other dramas have had fan followings, but I just mentioned why I didn't feel the same way, that's all. :)

0

@fay17, oh am not taking anything seriously, it's also just my personal opinion on your comment, that's all -:))

0

If I may, perhaps part of the fatigue is that she has recently played a “perfect employee” role? This time however she will have a life outside of work... the fangirl’s life.

My thoughts exactly. She has done one drama/year and all of a sudden people are tired of her and I don't get it.

11

Required fields are marked *

What i don't get is that how people have never said that to a male actor or people who never change their genres. So many actors who do family dramas are basically doing the same genre again and again for e.g. Uee. As I mentioned below even her former co star went from one rom com to next.

3
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

True. I don't see what the big deal is though with doing back to back romcoms either. I remember people here kicking up a fuss about Jang Nara being in "too many shows" but not saying the same thing to many male actors.

2

I don't understand the being in too many shows debate either. Don't know about JN but it was said about CSB too and she probably doesn't even earn much plus she was new to lead roles then. People go to work daily right? So what is the issue with people doing more than two shows a year to earn just a little more than an average workers yearly salary. People have a misconception that every leading actor gets a huge sum of money when they don't. I came across a post where among 20 actors, the least earning actor didn't make much and this was only a list of top 20 earning actors. Plus that money earned also goes to their companies. And honestly, not every actor gets CF's and only few are busy year round. Working regularly is also good for one's mental health. But yes this looks to me more like a sexist problem because nobody is saying that to a guy ever.

2

I don't think she's over exposed since she does one drama per year. But back-to-back rom coms sure is a weird decision as her Secretary Kim image is still strong in many people's minds. But I can understand why. She has never been this popular before. Her past projects were hits but the limelight mostly went to the male lead (e.g: City Hunter, Healer, Sungkyunkwan Scandal). So maybe she wants to capitalize on this momentum.

Required fields are marked *

As mentioned above there was atime when Gong Hyo Jin did rom coms every year. So do many other actors. This is just one back ti back rom com project for PMY when she has basically been one of the actresses who experiment the most with the genre, not exactly the character though. Her character's qualities /characteristics are usually similar. But this debate with her being in only one back to back rom com is something im unable to comprehend because there have been several actors who don't even change their genre or characters. Tbh even Figh My way was considered a part rom com part slice of life but nobody bat an eye on Park Seo Joon for doing back to back rom coms ( i know the characters were vastly different, but this post is also just an introduction to her character, we don't know yet how it will eventually turn out). Plus many other male and female actors who don't leave their thriller or melo genre.

The premise sounds like lots of potential for comedy, and I can already see great chemistry between these two wonderful actors. I trust that this PD will explore the elements of "embarrassing regrets and past glory" to add more emotional depth to the story.

I wonder if the story would be similar to the movie You Got Mail where they become friends online but are foes professionally. I hope KJM is not the director of PMY's gallery where she curates, because I am a little tired of seeing another workplace drama in which the prickly boss and candy employer fall in love.

Thanks for this intriguing casting news, @tccolb. Do I detect a pattern here? Older (i.e., mid- to late-thirties) oppas like Kim Ji-suk and Shin Dong-wook are getting cast as romantic leads, and it's freaking about time.

After his intense and excellent turn as an exorcist priest in GUEST, I'll likely end up in traction for whiplash if Kim Jae-wook takes this role. He's long overdue to play a romantic lead and finally get the girl, dang it. I couldn't help but think that he was wasted in TEMPERATURE OF LOVE, which saddled him with a perplexing character after his riveting performance as serial killer Mo Tae-goo in VOICE.

Art could imitate life in the upcoming show, with fanboy KJW playing himself in his rock band, Walrus. Obnoxious art gallery director by day morphs into headbanger by night. Ji Hyun-woo is another rock guitarist (formerly of The Nuts) who comes to mind for a cameo. How about Lee Hong-ki of F.T. Island? Or Eric of Shinhwa? ;-)

Alas, KJW isn't the only actor whose talents are underutilized in Kdramaland. Methinks that's why he had such a blast playing Mo Tae-goo and exorcist priest Choi Yoon. They were memorable, intense roles that he could really sink his teeth into.

If he brings some of the "demonic charm" of his pastry chef role in ANTIQUE to his fanboy persona, that could be great fun. But if it only happens via online posts, how will we even get to see that? By observing him having a hissy fit when his fansite's server crashes?!

Part 1 of 2

@fogcity,

I most definitely concur. That was why I was stoked when I first learned that Kim Ji-suk was going to play Yeonsangun in REBEL. He did a terrific job of making the tyrant a sympathetic character and portraying him as as much a victim of a corrupt system as the slaves and butchers at the bottom of the heap. All his years of hard work in Second Lead Purgatory paid off, and he delivered the goods with panache. Also, villain roles can be much more interesting than goody-two-shoes choir boys. If well-written, they can give actors an opportunity to really hone their craft. (For the record, KJS first caught my eye in CHUNO as one of Jang Hyuk's bounty hunters. I'd love to see him in another sageuk.)

As for how some actors end up as romantic leads early in their careers while others do not, I suspect that management is a huge factor in how their careers unfold. If managers and agents are image-conscious to a fault and insist on typecasting their talent, it limits the kinds and numbers of roles they can pursue -- and gets boring as heck. If they focus on their more bankable talent, less-experienced actors might not get the support they need to land worthwhile roles. I've gotten the impression that changing management can be a lengthy process, so if the partnership is not a fruitful one, precious pre-enlistment time is wasted.

I think it's also important to recall that when this crop of actors who are now hitting their mid-to-late thirties were starting out, talent agencies didn't necessarily have the kind of systematic training programs and idol factories that we see depicted in shows such as THE BEST HIT and DAE JANG-GEUM IS WATCHING. Quite a few actors started out in modeling, or were scouted on the street as students of everything but theater. (I have a soft spot for KJS because he majored in German and is qualified to teach it.) Some have degrees in engineering and other totally unrelated fields. After all that, they had to study acting and break into the field. Meanwhile, child actors and idols expanding into acting have made names for themselves and are in demand.

Part 2 of 2

Like many other areas of life, acting is a rat race. Just when you think you've won it, along come faster – and younger – rats.

And then there are the fads and fashions that emphasize appearance over acting chops. Don't look like a flower boy? Not a six-footer? Not anorexic thin enough? Away with you to Central Casting! There you will spend the rest of your career as a “character actor.” The thing is, however, that character actors can be scene stealers who go on to have longer, more varied careers than leading men whose stock in trade goes out of fashion, or who age out of romantic lead territory because the industry and audience are fixated on youth. That was one reason why I was so glad to see SHOULD WE KISS FIRST with Kam Woo-sung and Kim Sun-a. If we want our favorite actors (and actresses!!) gracing our screens for another 20-30 or more years, there have to be age-appropriate roles and vehicles in which to perform. How many potential Laurence Oliviers and Judi Denches will Korea lose otherwise?

On the up side, some folks are late bloomers and don't emerge as butterflies until their thirties, well after certain of their precocious contemporaries exceed their quota of talent and exit the profession. Because acting draws upon one's complete range of life experience, maturation is key, and cannot be rushed. And that is why fine actors only get better as time goes by, all other things being equal.

Here's hoping Kim Jae-wook and his contemporaries have a blast playing leads at last. ;-)

Yo, @yyishere YY! Are you contemplating a role in this show? How about the idol's bank of Marshall speakers cranked up to 11?

BTW, you've been nothing short of scintillating as The Island in TOP STAR YOO BAEK. Very nice pebbled shoreline at the ladies' diving spot, wide sandy beaches elsewhere, and undulating uplands with gorgeous ocean vistas. ;-)

Wow, you read my mind. I was contemplating taking on the Mysterious Something Surrounding His Character, mainly because I've never played a cameo with such a complex name before. I've basically kept to cameos with one-worded names, like Backpack, Toothbrush, Belt and Wok, or, at most, two-worded, like Soap Sud, Shower Gel, Hair Pore and The Island ( my best cameo, to date, but, of course, you know that), playing it safe, so I am intrigued by this tantalizing five- worded mouthful of a name. It'd challenge me to step out of my safe zone, so I'm excited.

Hahahahahaha! He's actually an oppa for me but I've been feeling robbed of his romance in Temperature of Love so THIS IS MY REVENGE!

And I mean, come on, what better reason could you want for getting rid of your first child? :D

Just as an aside, I'm currently rewatching KINGDOM OF THE WINDS / LAND OF THE WIND. It was Kim Jae-wook's next drama after COFFEE PRINCE, and his only sageuk that I know of. He's pretty good as one of Muhyul's cronies. KJW and Song Il-kook onscreen at the same time is almost too much to bear. ;-)

FYI: The instrumental score is gorgeous, with some lovely vocal numbers. You can find the OSTs here on my fan wall. Scroll down.

You have to watch Kingdom of the Winds. But I suggest first watch Jumong. It's just 81 episodes of crackstatic story, arrow shooting and riding, with healthy doses of palace scheming and a jaw-dropping OST .

Nooooo. I honestly don't usually like sageuks. I might watch a few with JCW and then if they grow on me watch a few more.

@ndlessjoie mugyuljoie,

Just an FYI for the terminally KJW-besotted who want to watch his entire filmography. ;-)

I'd love someone with KJW who does quirky well, and I want him to not be the character he was in Mary Stayed Out All Night unless it's the character he was in the last episode. Also not the character he played in Temperature of Love. Am I being too picky? Give him another great role please. *Sets out Melona bars, triangle kimbap, a few Dyson vacuums and hair dryers for the drama gods*

He acted coffee prince as the japanese waffle chef. Too bad i can't remember his scenes. But i like the idea of this drama. We all live our lives like this. 2019 is looking like a great drama year for me as 2018 was kinda a flop

I really like the actors but not sure on the premise. I never understood fangirls/boys and peoples weird obsession with stars or idols. It really confuses me why people get these crazy obsession over people they have never met and will probably never meet. For me I have actors I like but it doesn't go beyond wanting to see them in dramas. But I like the actors so I will probably still give this a go despite the premise sounding annoying.

I just finished watching Mary Who Stayed Out All Night and I was rooting for Kim Jae Wook most of the time. Who would pick a temperamental rocker over a stable guy who is willing to sacrifice everything for you? Glad he's finally getting his first lead role.
