The clown gets a lesson on how to be a king

Haha I’m glad they’re going for a lighter vibe with this teaser. The Man Who Became King is a little over two weeks away from its premiere, and tvN has released its latest teaser, featuring Yeo Jin-gu (Reunited Worlds) as the imposter king getting schooled on his royal demeanor. I love it when dramas throw in some unexpected comedy, so I hope the tone of the actual show follows that of its teasers thus far.

Yeo Jin-gu will be pulling double duty in this drama as both King Gwanghae and his doppelganger clown, who is hired to temporarily impersonate the king due to an assassination threat. In the teaser, Kim Sang-kyung (Jang Young-shil) and Jang Gwang‘s (About Time) government official and eunuch characters try to get the imposter king to convincingly play his doppelganger counterpart. They get frustrated as his “How dare you?” comes out alternately too light and lacking energy, which hilariously leads to the eunuch – after some impressive eye-contact-telepathy – to whack the clown-king upside the head to get a rise out of him.

I’m loving the visual comedy in this teaser too, with Kim Sang-kyung as a government official sitting on the throne while Yeo Jin-gu, in his kingly robes, kneels at the bottom of the stairs. I just love the irreverent tone to the whole thing, especially when the eunuch addresses Yeo Jin-gu with all the respect given to a king right after his head-thwack.

I remember really enjoying Masquerade back in 2012, which is the film this drama is adapted from, so I look forward to seeing what this latest reimagining of the oft-portrayed King Gwanghae will give us.

The Man Who Became King will take over tvN’s Monday-Tuesday slot in the new year from currently airing Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter beginning January 7.

I am too excited for this. All the promo has been amazing thus far. It's been a while since I was 100% happy with the casting as well.

@fencejumper and I cracked up every time the government official and the clown were in the same room, so I'm glad to find the antics might be the same going into the drama! 🤞🤞🤞

Am I wrong or does this guy play the head eunuch in like 80% of all sageuks? This is probably the first time he was allowed to whack a king on the head, though.

Looking forward to this! Yeo Jingu fighting!

He was in the movie Silenced and I really really hated him. First time I saw him, it looks like he started his career pretty late.

Yes he was very creepy and I hated his character so much in The Silenced. But then I got to watch him afterwards in Masquerade and his character was the complete opposite. He is so good.

WOAH. Wait. It's a completely different themed movie...but the title!
Coincidence much!?!

Nope that's not him anymore although he looks a bit similar. 😅 But yeah the titles are actually very close in Korean! 왕의 남자 (The King's man aka The King and the Clown) and 왕이 된 남자 (The Man Who Became King aka The Crowned Clown).

Speaking of similarity, I hope this one will get an OST as epic as Lee Sun Hee's Fate 😉

I see. My mistake! 😂
But still, some veteran actors really do play the same characters. Like Gramps Lee Soon jae who played King over FIVE times!

It's the same actor who plays the Eunuch in the movie :D He was really good in the movie and I loved his relationship with the clown.

I love all the teasers! This drama looks really good !

Loved seeing this very light-hearted, hilarious teaser after all those dark ones. Totally laughed so hard at this one! Especially when Kim Sang Kyung casually said, "There's no energy." And he actually used the word 'energy' 😂. Someone mentioned it somewhere and it was said that it's like a senior tutoring his junior. Given that Kim Sang Kyung has played kings previously, like King Sejong.

And guysss the trailer is also now out! You should also check it out if you haven't! You get to hear Jingoo say, "How dare you!" in his kingly manner. It's soo good! https://youtu.be/WFmYSSGgtr0

Thanks, @weaselking, for the link to the trailer. It's epic. Seeing someone dancing around in a mask and red robes gave me KING AND THE CLOWN vibes.

That was impressive diction. Manseh!

And Cliff Of Non-Doom puts in an appearance. Hwaiting, Cliff!

I love how in every move the clown did, the scene was paralleled with the king stabbing someone. And maybe the scene at the end was the king making Haseon repeat after him just like in the movie! Hahaha yes to that cliff which is included in the sageuk starter pack.. I hope nobody has to jump this time. 😁

IKR! I had a double take when he said it. And the way Kim Sang Kyung was talking in the teaser is so modern and casual, it's brilliant! Hands up to the people who conceptualized all these awesome teasers.

Thanks for the update on CROWNED CLOWN / MAN WHO BECAME KING, @tipsymocha. Chief Eunuch administering the Royal Dope Slap slayed me. The look on YJG's face when he accidentally achieved the proper tone and inflection was hilarious.

I loved the movie. If the drama itself is as good as this teaser, I'll be laughing my head off in the new year. Man, I've been jonesing for a good sageuk. Let the Royal Horsing Around begin. ;-)

I laughed so much when I saw this without knowing what he was saying! I’m hoping there is more comedy in this than what the first two teasers suggest.

BTW, I'd just like to add that the characters of the king and chief secretary are changed in this adaptation.

Gwanghaegun / Yi Hon (Lee Byung Hun) who is in his late 30's in the movie is going to be changed to a much younger king, Yi Heon (Yeo Jin Goo).

The Chief Secretary Heo Gyun (Ryu Seung Ryong) is being changed to Chief Secretary Yi Kyu (Kim Sang Kyung).

I really can't wait to watch it for him. Has never been into his drama since circle. Hope it won't be a fluff drama in disguise of hanbook clothes. I already can't wait to watch him in sageuk as the primary leads.

Just watched Masquerade and I must say, it was such a good movie! Current movies in the cinema seem so boring and blah so this movie is a nice Christmas Eve watch. I hope this drama is produced just as well as the movie!

@light,

I rewatched MASQUERADE a couple of days ago to refresh my memory, and it was as terrific as I remembered. But what surprised me was learning that I'd seen Lee Byung-hun in this film -- and also BUNGEE JUMPING OF THEIR OWN -- long before MR. SUNSHINE. I didn't recognize him. I loved his performance in MASQUERADE. Before the full import of his impersonation sunk in on the clown, he was downright whimsical at times. Very endearing -- and completely unlike the real king's vibe.

The scene of him using the Royal Facilities for the first time was hilarious. ROFLMAO!

The conversation with the chief eunuch re: ID tags was illuminating, as were some of the other insights into policies causing political wrangling. Here's hoping the drama explores these and other aspects of governance and policy and their impact on the daily lives of the citizens.

Yes. He was endearing as the king/clown. I wanted him to be king when the advisor supported him asked him if he wanted to be one. He totally convinced me that he can be a good kinh by learning about public policy under the strong guidance of both the advisor and the eunuch. The three can rule a country. Unfortunately, the 1st 2 episodes of the drama didn't really showcase how he learned policy. It was implied but not shown. Maybe episode 3 onwards.

Toilet humour usually make me cringe, but that one made me laugh!

The best parts were the relationships he formed with those closest to him. Such a good movie. I recommend it to anyone new reading this post. Hee.
