Premiere Watch: Familiar Wife

Familiar Wife

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy rom-com
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: I’m so excited to get a new rom-com from writer Yang Hee-seung, who penned the witty comedies Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju, Oh My Ghostess, and High School King of Savvy. This time she’s teaming up with the PD of Shopping King Louis to tell the story of a husband and wife who fell in love in their youth, only to end up a beleaguered salaryman and a weary mother of two who spend their time fighting like mortal enemies. The drama takes husband Ji Sung on a fantasy journey of what-ifs, instigated by a wormhole trip back in time to when he first met his wife. He’ll make a series of decisions that changes their futures, and end up in a completely different present where he’s not married to Han Ji-min, and she’s utterly happy and successful without him.

It’s a dash of Go Back Spouses (which was so cute!) but with more time spent in the alternate present, as Ji Sung gets to live out his fantasies, make new regrets, and then travel back and forth in time to fix the timeline he screwed up in the first place. I honestly can’t imagine Ji Sung being anything other than the perfect husband and father, but for the sake of fiction, I’ll roll with it. I think most people will tune in for the realistic relationship, relatable problems, and a chance to live out your fantasy do-over life. Me, I’m in it for hubby Ji Sung’s truckload of jealousy and regret when he realizes that his wife is now hot and single, thanks to him. Muahaha.

Definitely tuning in to this one. It is high and my list of shows to watch right after What's Wrong With Secretary Kim. An added bonus since it fills that time slot as well.

Seriously, another thing this drama has going for it-- in addition to Ji Sung, the writer, the PD, and a similar premise to Go Back Spouses-- is its time slot. The progression so far this year has been Prison Playbook ➡️ Mother ➡️ My Ajusshi ➡️ What's Wrong with Secretary Kim. (And last year, Avengers Social Club came before Prison Playbook.) WWWSK drew more criticism than the others, but it was quite successful which is rare for a rom-com these days. The staff in charge of this time slot seem to have a knack for picking (and creating) winners-- let's hope they've done it again!

Dang, that time slot really has had a string of good dramas.

I hope this drama can break the curse of time traveling romances which have been rather unsatisfactory aside from Go Back Couple.

Guess now I’ll have to watch Prison Playbook and Mother to fully appreciate this timeslot.

I still think My Ahjussi has been the best drama so far in 2018. No other drama made me feel so complete soothed my soul.

I enjoyed watching prison playbook, finished it in three days, the episodes are quite long if I remember correctly they were about 90 mins each but personally I didnt feel them.

Imo, prison playbook is such a stress reliever. The comedy is everywhere and always on point.

Really looking forward to this. The highlight trailer looked good. The story looks funny and relatable despite the fantasy element. The cast and writer are solid. Ji Sung!

In my fantasy do-over life, I'm rich... a little rich... not like own corporations... more like -- I work, but do not annoy me 'cause I think backpacking through a random European country would be an interesting way to spend the next month or so.

I'm in Ji Sung and time travelling trope. Personally I'm not a big fan of Han Ji Min though her acting is good.
The poster and trailer looks amazing.❤️
A awesome romantic comedy drama was must needed to get through middle of the week.

It sounds like The Family Man in reverse.

In addition to Go Back Spouses, this show sounds like Nine: Nine Times Time Travel rom-com edition, but hopefully without the terminal illness, the murder, and the unintentional comical (but unwatchable) villain. Oh and the fauxcest (okay, it was effective to drive the angst in Nine so maybe.)

Just to be clear, I am really looking forward to this show.

travel back and forth in time to fix the timeline he screwed up in the first place

That part sounds like Manhole. And speaking of things that need fixing if you can go back to the past...

"travel back and forth in time TO FIX THE TIMELINE HE SCREWED UP..." Why else would you go back in time? All time travel dramas are to fix stuff they screwed up the first time around.

It's interesting that Yang Hee-seung's co-writer on King of Savvy, Jo-Sung-hee, also has a drama airing these days: Thirty but Seventeen. I'm hoping to love both!

Yaaaay this sounds like fun! A few beanies and i recently watched About time (the movie) and this seems to have the same fantasy premise-ish. Please dont let me down! I must admit WWWSK was not my cup of tea after the first weeks.... hopefully its plot will work well. I loved GBC

This is like a grown-up Operation Proposal. Their marriage does sound über realistic. I am completely jaded by life.

Loveeeee Weightlifting fairy so much that I will definitely watch this one. And it sounds like a perfect rom-com with realistic life problems that can make us all related.

Sounds like a mash up between 'Go Back Spouse' and THE 'manhole'. Still excited tho. Totally going to recommend this to my best friend who are not a kdrama fan, but totally love Go Back Spouse.

I'm a lot more excited for dramas from my favorite writers than dramas with my favorite actors! this just HAS to be good... even if I really hate time travel stories.

Oh, you really do. It has my favorite line in a kdrama ever: "Your pants aren't too short, you're just needlessly tall!"

If I could make a suggestion
it would be great if you could put where the drama can watched legally -if that option is available-

I think there been something of a back lash to just how much it is like Go Back Spouses in Korea, seems it not the fist time a drama from tvN has been similar to another recently released drama. A bit harsh as it only the first episode and hardly the first time there been a run of same like drama being made all at the same time in Korea.

There is a very wife fitting Stephen Foster song ("My wife is a most knowing woman"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=bvqm6SY1FQo

"My wife is a most knowing woman,
She always is finding me out,
She never will hear explanations
But instantly puts me to rout,
There's no use to try and deceive her,
If out with my friends night or day,
In a most inconceivable manner,
She tells where I've been right away,
She says that I'm "mean" and "inhuman."
Oh! My wife is a most knowing woman.

She would've been hung up for witchcraft
If she had lived sooner, I know,
There's no hiding anything from her,
She knows what I do -- where I go;
And if I come in after midnight
And say "I have been to the lodge,"
Oh, she says while she flies in a fury,
"Now don't think to play such a dodge!
It's all very fine, but won't do, man,"
Oh, my wife is a most knowing woman.

Not often I go out to dinner
And come home a little "so so,"
I try to creep up through the hall-way,
As still as a mouse, on tip-toe,
She's sure to be waiting up for me
And then comes a nice little scene,
"What, you tell me you're sober, you wretch you,
Now don't think that I am so green!
My life is quite worn out with you, man,"
Oh, my wife is a most knowing woman!

She knows me much better than I do,
Her eyes are like those of a lynx,
Though how she discovers my secrets
Is a riddle would puzzle a sphynx,
On fair days, when we go out walking,
If ladies look at me askance,
In the most harmless way, I assure you,
My wife gives me, oh! such a glance,
And says "all these insults you'll rue, man,"
Oh, my wife is a most knowing woman.

Yes, I must give all of my friends up
If I would live happy and quiet;
One might as well be 'neath a tombstone
As live in confusion and riot.
This life we all know is a short one,
While some tongues are long, heaven knows,
And a miserable life is a husband's
Who numbers his wife with his foes;
I'll stay at home now like a true man,
Oh, my wife is a most knowing woman."

I’ve enjoyed Ji sungs work, but he doesn’t look the part of a college student... he looks way too old to play that role. Disappointed bc the drama itself feels like it’ll be great!

Han Ji-Min is also too old to play the role of Woo Jin. Additional she looks like a big sister to Jong Hoo ( Jang Seung Jo) and not his girlfriend. Perhaps both the lead actor and actress are recruited due to their skills and experience and could bring out the emotions of the characters they are portraying.
