Premiere Watch: Life, Thirty But Seventeen, Risky Romance, Your Honor, Time, Gangnam Beauty

I hope you’re in the mood to be buried under a mountain of dramas, because ready or not, here they come—medical, romance, legal, comedy, melodrama—and all at once, naturally. It’s fine. It’s not like I had plans to live or anything.

Life

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Medical
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Life is one of those dramas where suppressing your expectations for the premiere is impossible, because it’s the project that’s bringing together writer Lee Soo-yeon of last year’s critically-acclaimed success Forest of Secrets, PD Hong Jong-chan of Dear My Friends , PD Im Hyun-wook who’s worked on Awl and This Week My Wife Will Have an Affair, and a cast led by Jo Seung-woo and Lee Dong-wook. On paper it sounds dull—a medical drama about the ethical clash between chaebol administrators and doctors who want to save lives—but I expect this writer to weave an intricate, tense story out of an obvious setup, and for the two lead actors to send antagonistic sparks flying with every interaction. Crackling tension between Lee Dong-wook and Jo Seung-woo sounds like a pretty good reason to do anything, if you ask me.

Thirty But Seventeen

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Romantic comedy
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours total)

Reasons to watch: I feel like someone watched Reunited Worlds and thought, I can make this better, with the same exact motifs but none of the romantic squickiness! And voila, Thirty But Seventeen was born. With a premise like this, you can’t expect me not to watch this rom-com: Shin Hye-sun wakes up from a thirteen-year coma, and has to come to terms with having fallen asleep a seventeen-year-old teen and waking up a thirty-year-old woman. Uh, I think this drama just summed up how I feel about adulthood every day of my life. It comes from PD Jo Soo-won of Pinocchio and I Hear Your Voice, and writer Jo Sung-hee of She Was Pretty and High School King of Savvy, so I have faith it’ll deliver on the cute romantic scenarios and age-reversal laughs.

Risky Romance

Time slot: Monday & Tuesday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Rom-com, medical
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours total)

Reasons to watch: If you can’t decide between Life and Thirty But Seventeen, you could mash the two genres with medical rom-com Risky Romance, which stars Ji Hyun-woo and Lee Shi-young as two doctors who butt heads and fall in love. I think it’s safe to call this drama a romantic comedy that happens to be set in a hospital—you know, the kind where the doctoring is incidental to the flirting. The production crew is an interesting mix—PD Lee Chang-han of I Need Romance Season 1, which was stylish and sexy, and writer Kim Nam-hee of Cheese in the Trap, which was excellent… until it wasn’t. There’s definitely potential here, but I think I need to be wowed by the premiere to sway my vote.

Your Honor

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Legal
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours total)

Reasons to watch: Yoon Shi-yoon is pretty much reason enough for me to tune into anything, though I will admit that I skipped his last drama, Grand Prince. That just means I’ve waited longer for his comeback, so hopefully Your Honor makes it worth the wait. He’ll be playing a dual role as twins in a mistaken-identity setup—one brother is the golden child judge, and the other brother is the black sheep career criminal, and when the judge goes missing one day, the criminal takes his place. I much prefer the twin brother angle as opposed to the random (and unexplained!) doppelgangers we so often get in dramaland, because then we get to explore why the brothers’ paths diverged so sharply. (If you’re into this, the drama short Sirius is a great watch.) Directing is PD Bu Sung-chul of melodramas Mask and Jang Ok-jung, Live By Love, and writing is Chun Sung-il of The Package, Level 7 Civil Servant, Runaway Plan B, and Chuno.

Time

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: MBC
Genre: Melodrama
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours total)

Reasons to watch: I watched the trailer for this drama and my mind immediately compared it to the melodrama Mask, and then I looked up the writer and whadduya know… it’s from the same writer, Choi Ho-chul, of Mask and Secret. Maybe because both dramas start out with a dead woman in a pool, and focuses on a poor woman entering a world full of chaebols with deep dark skeletons in deep dark closets? Seohyun stars as a woman who seeks to know how her sister died, and in the process she befriends Kim Jung-hyun, the chaebol bad boy who may or may not be directly responsible for her death. Hey, compared to Mask, which had arranged marriages and doppelgangers, this plot sounds downright tame. Expect high drama, a dash of murder mystery, and some questionable life choices that lead to love.

My ID Is Gangnam Beauty

Time slot: Friday & Saturday
Broadcaster: JTBC
Genre: Coming-of-age, romance
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: This looks fluffier than cotton candy, but really cute. My ID Is Gangnam Beauty is a webtoon adaptation about an ugly duckling heroine who undergoes plastic surgery between high school and college, and the drastically different life she experiences as a campus beauty. It focuses on her personal coming-of-age and self-acceptance, and her growth from a bullied wallflower into a confident young woman. It’s a familiar setup (200 Pound Beauty, Birth of a Beauty—are you sensing a theme here?) with no notable stars on the cast or crew, but I’m rooting for it to be heartfelt and relatable.

So.Many.Shows.

30 but 17 was cute and I heard Life was amazing.

The World Cup changed a whole bunch of premieres, so the next huge onslaught of premieres will be in the end of September when all these shows end.

Hopefully it can be straightened out soon. I like my premieres one at a time.

Mori-ya, looking so tragic and melo. Please take on a more cheerful role next time so I can watch it. *cries softly*

I'd love to watch "Thirty But Seventeen" but my plate is full with 4 current dramas (my rule is only 2). Turns out live-watching consumes me even more than binge-watching.

I'm not sure if she was angling to do that...

Q: What do you call an angle that gets hit by a Truck of Doom?
A: a wrecked angle rectangle

Q: Why couldn't the young chaebol angle get a loan?
A: Because his parents wouldn't cosine.

Q: What do you call an angle that looks like a flower boy?
A: acute angle

Thirty But Seventeen: “Uh, I think this drama just summed up how I feel about adulthood every day of my life.” How true, I can’t agree more.

I’m looking forward to Life & Risky Romance. I’m a fan of Yoon Shiyoon but I don’t like doppelgangers/twins.

Sidetracking, Yoon Shiyoon was the new member of 2 Days 1 Night after Kim Joohyuk left, & now he’s working with his then girlfriend. This is fate? 🙊

Dear Judge : Exactly. I'm not the only one thinking bout this coincidence. I've just started to watch the first 2 episodes. I also dislike the twinsies characters but give it a try for Yoon Shi Yoon and Lee Yoo Yong (I fancy her acting in Tunnel ^O^)
My ID is Gangnam Beauty : I've read the webtoon and so far being satisfy with how the drama delivered it. Even somehow liking the TA seonbae

i may try Gangnam Beauty when it's over too. it wasn't on my list but i have seen good reviews.

I'm for sure watching Life! (I recently finished Forest of Secrets and will follow this writer anywhere now!) And will check out Thirty But Seventeen. (Shin Hye-sun and Yang Se-jong is a great pairing I didn't know I needed!)

Thank goodness WWWSK is finishing up this week because I'm also watching Life on Mars and Mr. Sunshine and four currently airing shows is about my limit during the summer when I don't have uni (and even in general!).

Why is it that when I have super high expectations of a drama (Life) I also secretly assume it's actually going to be terrible? Maybe it's Mr. Sunshine syndrome... you can tell that everyone involved is so convinced that what they're making is HIGH QUALITY that they actually forget to try hard enough to bring everything together on an emotional level.

Prove me wrong/right/wrong/Idontknowanymore Life!

I like Yang Se Jong. He’s a good, young actor. But I doubt I can last through another mediocre drama for him if 30 But 17 turns out like his last one (Temperature of Love).

Hi @psycho94 psycho. It seems to me that DramaFever would have been the logical place for JTCB's LIFE since it is immediately following on JTBC's MISS HAMMURABI which was shown on DF. DF had also shown JTBC's MISTY and SKETCH. It is now a total crap shoot whether dramas are available subbed or not and where.

I'm also surprisingly interested in Time because I've not watched any of the actors or seen the writer's work before. And I usually stay away from Chaebol cooperate shenanigans.
I hope they go dark on the romance, I really wanna see that.
Question:
Has there been any mainstream dark romance in kdrama? CITT was skirting that angle with Yoo Jung being a psychopath( or not) who also deserved to have his love story explored and if it could succeed( or not) but we all know how that went.
Great Seducer was supposed to be like that but I didn't watch, so I have no idea.
Anymore?

Risky Romance: Medical Rom-com? Maybe if it’s really funny?
Your Honor: Pass

Try waking up in your late 60s and wondering where the time went.

Then substitute any other career choice for the first line of the song at the end of the movie "The Gallant Hours" when the old admiral is retiring and leaving the ship for the last time.

I knew a lad who went to sea

I knew him well, the lad was me

I feel like waving my hands whenever I see your ID- as ex-Cobol programmer myself (meaning I am old and hopefully matured a little). That is a sad song, but I hope the old admiral found new life he could enjoy.

Let's see, Last bunch ended were:
About time, Miss Hammurabi, Investigation couple, Greasy melo,Handsome man, Come and hug me, Rich man, Secret mother, Goodbye to goodbye, Sketch.

And New bunch started/starting are:
Let's eat3, Life, Risky Romance, Thirty but seventeen,
Dear Judge, Time, Witch's love, Gangnam Beauty, Let me introduce her, Mr.Sunshine.

The only one I didn't finish from the list was 'Goodbye to goodbye', and overall I enjoyed what I watched. Then again I have to say there were quite a few which could've been better. Hope we don't get disappointed this time around. Looks pretty promising so far.

I'm definitely watching Life (for our Grim Reaper) and 30 but 17 (for the producer-writer). I am also wholeheartedly dedicated to Astro, so I must watch Eunwoo in Gangnam Beauty, but the setup for that drama sounds like it's getting too close to being immoral. I won't have time for the other ones so I hope I have chosen wisely.

Howdy, @marcusnyc20 Bong-soo!

Glad to know you'll be tuning in to see what Dong-gu Daegun is up to in the 21st century. I'm intrigued to see how Yoon Si-yoon will do in a dual role, especially as one of the characters will be a criminal. For warm fuzzies, you might enjoy FLOWER BOY NEXT DOOR. YSY's character, Enrique Keum, is too cute for words. BREAD, LOVE AND DREAMS is another good one, with Joo Won turning in a dandy performance as YSY's antagonist brother.

For the heck of it, I've been watching Joo Sang-wook in CUNNING SINGLE LADY, and is that role ever a switcheroo from Lee Kang! He plays a nerdy programmer whose start-up becomes hugely successful after his personal life goes down the tubes. I've got whiplash from seeing JSW in it. Incidentally, Seo Kang-joon (now doing a bang-up job as a robot and his human in ARE YOU HUMAN TOO) and Kim Myung-soo, aka L, are also in it. I thought L did well in RULER: MASTER OF THE MASK, and was was downright excellent as Judge Im Ba-reun in MISS HAMMURABI. The latter is a wonderful show about judges that is reminiscent of LIVE in its unflinching realism and terrific ensemble cast. Ryu Deok-hwan stole the show in his comeback from military service. (You might know him as King Gongmin in FAITH.)

That's all for now. See you in the YOUR HONOR recap comments. (I'm being an optimist.)

I also wonder the same. I think it's more the Director( that OST OMG!...*dissolves into tears*...) and eventually, the actors who I wasn't familiar with but came to love, especially Kim Go Eun and admired Seo Kang Joon's piano playing skills( I know, I know). Park Hae Jin was the only one I knew from MLFAS so I came in for him as I thought him a really First Male Lead- worthy actor. I wasn't disappointed with his portrayal but I wish he had more to work with down into the show.

I came to comment the same thing. I will never watch another drama written by her again. She destroyed CITT.

1

Required fields are marked *

Exactly. I thought at the time that the writer had developed a major crush on Sao Kang Joon and rewrote scenes in order to make him the male lead. By the end of the drama, if I had to watch one more scene of In Ho playing the piano I would have screamed.

Required fields are marked *

cough wow my feelings are...... the opposite of this

1

You are much strong than me. I screamed every opportunity I could. It was the only way to release the frustration.
*scratches back of head, frustrated*

2

My honest feelings about this...CITT almost made me dislike SKJ. Logically I know it wasn't his fault but my heart takes over and it bugs me. As a character I really felt like In Ho was annoying. Especially since his original reason for getting close to Seol was to irritate Jung. Ugh! sorry, this is not the place to CITT rant.

0

You aren't the only one...
The mess that CITT ended up made me somehow equate the dislike I had for both In-ho and In-ha with the actor and actress who played them. So now I still cannot bring myself to watch anything with SKJ or LSK :(((

I'm probably missing out.. but I guess there are also a lot of other great dramas out there

0

CITT? Do you mean Cheese Made of Crap, the K-Drama where the PD made the second male lead more pivotal in the story then the male lead? DAM! I forgot to add it to my amnesia list of K-Dramas. The ones I wish I could develop amnesia and forget completely. Talk about really really smelly cheese.

3
7
reply

Required fields are marked *

Good plan to add it to your amnesia list. However, I want to remember how this writer destroyed what had been for at least the first 8 episodes an outstanding drama so that I can avoid all of her future dramas. Given her track record with CITT I can never be sure that she wont again develop a major crush on the second male lead and again try to turn him into the lead.

2

Unfortunately as my amnesia list grows longer, my hope of getting amnesia grows smaller. I had never considered the writer the culprit in this heinous crime. I had always blamed the PD. However, realistically both of them must bare the blame. Each of them had to play their part for that travesty to be aired. There is more than enough blame to go around.

2

Hmmm, now that I think about it the controversy surrounding CITT related to the PD and not the writer. I remember at the time this drama was airing, Park Hae Jin expressed concerns to the PD that scenes he had filmed were either not aired or were re-film using Sao Kang Joon with the Sao Kang Joon version being aired. So I guess I should actually be avoiding dramas with Lee Yoon Jung as the director.

2

I would like to state for the record that the cheese was 1000% blame free.

3

I think it's a safe bet to blame both.

2

Just as long as we remember that "the cheese stands alone".
cc: @tazmania, @thatstp

2

Apologies - I feel exactly this way about something in the rain. :(

2

Oh wow. So many show.
I still behind some ongoing drama and just watch WWWSK and are you human too?. Most of the new drama consist actor/writer-director that I like.
I want to watch Life for the team, actors+director-writernim, The Honor for YSY (I skip Grand Prince too @girlfriday), 30 but 17 for YSJ and SHS, My ID is Gangnam Beauty for the promiss that this show would be light and heartwarming.

I kind of want to check out five of these six dramas. 😢
Which is impossible. So to prioritise:
1. Life - the only I'll probably watch
2. Yoon Shi Yoon
3. Yang As Jong,
4. Kim Jung Hyun,
5. Cha Eun Woo

I have no dramas on my plate now that CAHM is over so wow, lots to choose from! I've been waiting for Life just because. Not very interested in the plot but hopefully it's good. Your Honor, I will check out too coz Yoon Shi Yoon, I missed you so much! And is that Kwak Dongyeon in Gangnam Beauty?! Must watch! It looks cute and I love watching dramas with more lowkey actors. Yay!

Too many! I'm having drama paralysis. I'll just wait and see what floats up to the top on the beanie fanwall, since those are what I always end up watching anyway.

30 but 17 sounds awfully like the TW drama Love at 17 with Lego Li and Nikki Hsieh

Sometimes you know from the first episode you're going to love a drama.
Sometimes you can tell from the first episode it has possibilities, even though you're not quite sold yet, but you'll keep watching.
And then there are those that obviously from the very first episode - no. Something is off, whether the cast, directing, whatever, or it just isn't your thing.
The first episode of 30 but 17 was - no. I took it off my watchlist already. On to the next premier...

First episodes are what do it for me too. I always say “If they don't get it right the first time, you spend the rest of the drama watching them trying to fix it.” (trying not to think of HWARANG)
Thanks for the heads up Lin, I'm taking this one off my list too. Let's see...shall we go with Life instead?

Thirty but Seventeen: casts Shin Hye-Sun and Yang Se-Jong
Me: Ooh, I love them! Is it a noona romance?
Thirty But Seventeen: No, they’re both 30.
Me: Oh, okay. That makes sense. I’m down with that. So is the title a metaphor or—
Thirty But Seventeen: And Shin Hye-Sun’s character has the mental and emotional maturity of a 17 year old because she’s been in a coma for 13 years.
Me:
Thirty But Seventeen:
Me:

The part of me that just wants to enjoy things is all “shut up and enjoy the cute age hijinks” but the part of me that’s a Suspicious Feminist Bitch is like “this kind of premise is a product of culture that likes to infantilize women and also part of a disturbing trend of adult men being paired with teenage girls”. I’m conflicted lol.

Yoon Shi Yoon, I adore your face but your new drama looks like a trainwreck. It’s literally my two least favourite recent drama trends: judges and doppelgangers. I will definitely still watch it but only because of your face.

I swear. All the judges and doppelganger dramas they've been producing I've never watched one.

Hi @yujacha yuja. LOL. I am not pessimistic about YSY's newest drama as you are. Crime is my favorite genre so I am looking forward to YOUR HONOR. I will say this about YSY, his eyes are something else.

Ji Hyun-woo's and Lee Shi-young's faces in that poster enough for me to tune in but the writer kinda turn me off...

I'm hoping to get the vibe of Lee Shi-young's character in Wild Romance + Ji Hyun-woo's character in Queen In-hyun's Man

Thirty But Seventeen is what attracts me.
I also glad WWWSK ends this week, because I cannot let go the house helper and mr sunshine.
I mean, I can manage a week with only three dramas, but only three!!!!
Life is busy

I only need Life, but it's nowhere to be find. Is it going to be like Agron? do I need to wait for months until it shows up on Netflix?

I don't have time for all these dramas. I've got to write my projects read for exam and hang out with friends. It's too much. I'll read if recapped but I can manage to watch thirty but seventeen and my id is gangnam beauty.

After much consideration (5 minutes of heavy thinking), these are the dramas I'll watch, listed according to priority:

1. Life - Jo Seung woo!
2. Risky Romance - I have a soft spot for the two leads, Ji Hyun-woo and Lee Shi-young. And I need something light to balance out Life. Judging from Forest of Secrets, that's gonna be intense.
3. Your Honor - Not really into the plot, but Yoon Dong gu playing dual role, and I really want to know if 'Angel' tattoo is intentional or is there any explanation behind it. Gonna give this a 2 eps try.
4. 30 but 17/Time - only if any of the above drama got dropped out like hot potatoes.

Life:
Lee Dong Wook( and his soulful eyes) and Jung Seung Woo, nuff said!!

Time: surprisingly intrigued and ready for some melodrama. Never watched any of the actors though.

Risky Romance:
How did I miss that Ji Hyun Woo was back, in a comedy, no less? And his going to be a bit kooky not straight-faced like in QIHM( which I loved. Mannered and brainy scholar ftw!)

Gangnam Beauty:
interesting title. I'm curious because of the writer of CITT's involvement.

I'm slightly interested in:

Thirty but Seventeen because LOL Girlfriday XD "Uh, I think this drama just summed up how I feel about adulthood every day of my life"

and
Gangnam Beauty beause it looks light & seems to need not much use of the brain.

As for the rest, medical dramas don't interest me, aaaand YSY my boy, as much as I like you, legal dramas don't interest me as well, But I wish you all the best! fighting!
