Kim Hyun-joong to make his drama comeback with fantasy romance

More than anything I’m surprised that there are drama-makers who still consider idol-turned-actor Kim Hyun-joong (Age of Feeling, Playful Kiss) employable, but he’s just been confirmed to a series called When Time Stops. To put it plainly, his name is mud in showbiz circles these days, and I’d really thought there was a chance his career was toast.

That could still be the case, but at least now he’ll have a chance to work his way back with the fantasy romance drama featuring a main character with superpowers — specifically, time traveling, because we’re not quite done with that trend yet. When he meets the heroine and falls in love with her, he also apparently finds the meaning of life. The drama marks Kim’s return to television after four years away, his last drama being 2014’s period action series Age of Feeling.

(In case you missed the hullaballoo: Without getting into all the ugly details, Kim Hyun-joong has been mired in nasty scandals involving his ex-girlfriend, whom he was accused of beating repeatedly, allegedly resulting in miscarriage. Those accusations were followed by his denial of paternity for the child she bore after their breakup and a subsequent lawsuit. His agency distanced itself from him in the aftermath, and then last year he was also caught up in a drunk driving charge. Ultimately he was cleared of the assault charges, but the process was quite damaging to his image, and in dramaland where a clean image is so crucial to an actor’s success, it seemed that his may have suffered too much to recover. We’ll have to see whether he can bounce back successfully with this project.)

When Time Stops will broadcast in October on cable channel KBS W.

It honestly feels like people pick and choose who should be forgiven. I think about the issues here in a America with this quote unquote A list actors who practically get away with murder and still get a movie in a top shot film. People still see the movie.

Why have a judicial system in Korea if their people don’t believe it? Kim Hyun Joong was found “Not Guilty” on “All” counts by three courts in Korea! The ex was found “guilty” of lieing and fabricating “everything” she told about him! Why don’t his people believe their own Court System? What more does he have to do?
I feel so sorry for all the Korean stars. Once they have an Evil person fabricate a story for the money, they will never be forgiven by there people. Weather what was told about the star is true or not! 😡. He is a Good man who doesn’t deserve this!
I wish KHJ well in his new Drama and hope it will be well received! KHJ Fighting!

Can't put cheaters on the same page as rapists and assaulters. The first is a moral failing, the latter two are crimes and deserve jail or at least an ouster from the industry. That's what would happen in any decent workplace

Joo Ji Hoon also payed for his crimes as any normal person with his charges would (unlike certain someone). It wasn't really about "no longer reported by media" that he was forgiven. I have no idea why someone would still mention his scandal now.
Park Shi Hoo and Kim Hyun Joong are still hated in Korea, the ratings of their shows would probably be okay if its audience are people who don't read news/they are cast with popular celebs

Actually Park Shi Hoo's last show was an absolute blockbuster. A weekend drama, it started with 20% ratings and ended with 47.5%. Thing about him though, he admitted he screwed up and shouldn't have slept with his drunken fan and even she moved on (and got married since then) so he seems to have rebounded. What Kim Hyun Joong did is a whole different ballgame.

1

"Rape isn't rape because she moved on from the incident despite it being traumatic so he deserves the rebound for throwing money at the problem to make it go away with no repercussion whatsoever" Wow nice story you got going on there

10

He literally has a criminal record for that scandal lmfao I swear you lot are ridiculous. Joo Jihoon went to jail for this, compared to the other two who walked away scot-free when they threw enough money at the problem to make it go away, jfc. Leave the man alone, he's hurt no one but himself

Joo Ji Hoon received a suspended sentence and never actually went to jail.

Does that take away the fact that he got a criminal record from it compared to some people

Totally agree. I didn't want to get into comparing "scandals", but drug use is vastly different from beating on your pregnant ex.

So I guess in this article did you miss that he was "cleared of all charges", huh. Typical people set their minds to something and keep believing it even when the truth has already been revealed. There was no pregnant girlfriend either, sooo....Just so you know, she's currently been found guilty for fabricating everything. She's also on trial for criminal charges as well.

1

I think it’s not fair to compare Joo Ji Hoon’s scandal with Park Shi Hoo’s or Kim Hyun Joong’s as he didn’t harm others but only himself.

Last I read on this scandal the girl was going to jail for falsifying evidence of the alleged assault. Dips**t kim was app apologizing for pushing her when she broke into his house and attacked him. Either way both of them are trash and the only person I feel sorry for is the child. If I were to hazard a guess the girl fell pregnant nd thought marriage nd asswipe was like I aint having none of tht nd she went nuts. I honestly think both are shitty human beings, the girl was also asking for money to keep quiet abt the baby, can you imagine what tht baby will have to read on the internet when its older, it makes me angry...

Even you admit that what he did was 'push her out of his house when she broke in and attacked him'. Exactly HOW is this equivalent to 'assaulting' her? She totally lied about him. He never beat her up. Choi Hye Mi admitted lying to him. There's evidence she got a doctor to lie for her as well. So why this makes anyone but her a 'shitty human being' mystifies me.
SHE is horrible. KHJ is a victim, possibly not the sharpest crayon, does (or did) indulge in casual sex (imagine, a rock star sleeping around....), seems to drink too much (like half of S. Korea) - but he's not horrible, criminal nor toxic. Obviously all the other girls he was involved with had NO problems with him other than, say, his lack of committment (which he's mentioned quite a few times in public). If you find him repulsive for his morality that's you, and you'll have to include quite a few other major stars in that condemnation.

Does KBS have some obsession with molesters that we don't know???

Park Shi Hoo has been exonerated. There's evidence, strong enough for the courts, that the girl and her BFF conspired to blackmail him.
KHJ - that female Choi Hye Mi has been convicted of fraud, and admitted she lied. She's lost three court cases, and been fined.

"My Golden Life" would still be a hit drama with or without Park Shi-hoo.

That show had beloved drama and film veteran actors like Cheon Ho-Jin, Kim Hye-Ok, Kim Byeong-Ki, Kwon Hyuk-Poong etc.

The majority of weekend viewers are the older demos. They 'll tune in to watch familiar actors of their generation.
The younger ones are a bonus if they do well like Shin Hye Sun.

He picked a weekday drama first and i think it had low ratings. He became smart and decided to go for a weekend drama instead because there is already a built-in audience and he didn't need to "carry" the drama. So I would safely say that the success is not really because of him, but he rode on the success instead. Still.....I watched a few clips and couldn't forget what a sleezeball he is in real life.

Ok, I may not know all the details, but since all the comments above are tipping towards one side of the scale badly, let me ask about the other side. What if he was accused wrongly? What if no one believed him? We can't always trust the articles, I mean they're always going to be biased towards the dramatic side of the story. I may not know what happened but if what I'm thinking is true, then I don't think it's fair for people like us to think like that about him.

But then again, I may have watched too many dramas. XDDDD

There were NO 'legit proofs' against KHJ, it NEVER was confirmed he 'beat his girlfriend' - in fact never confirmed she ever got beaten by anyone - nor that he cheated on her (you know, when it's a casual relationship with no strings attached, there's no 'cheating' involved, right?) She ADMITTED she'd lied about the miscarriage and abortions - plus the text messages she SOLD to Dispatch make it clear that KHJ simply said he'd support her decision - if SHE wanted an abortion he'd pay for it. He DID pay for a couple fake abortions in fact - she'd found her money cow there :(
So you obviously know nothing about this case from objective, respected news sources.

I am usually one who thinks like you...if someone pays the penalty for wrongdoing, or if charges are unfounded and not proven, I give them the benefit of the doubt that either it didn't happen, or that they have learned their lesson and deserve a second chance. (Lee Min Ki still has my full support until or unless I hear something new) But I read the text messages they released of his conversations with his ex, and I read the testimonies of both of them, and...yeah...yuck. This guy shouldn't be allowed around women. He's a predator.

Those text messages were sold to Dispatch, not turned in as evidence. NONE of us (unless there are commenters here in the South Korean legal system who were involved in the court cases) have read any of the AUTHENTICATED texts she finally turned in, 2 years later.
The ones Dispatch printed don't show him doing anything horrendous at all - I read them as well. I guess you just think Idols and celebrities should all be virginal.
Nothing at all shows him to be any kind of predator. Quite the opposite - he doesn't have to do a thing, the girls flock about him. Sadly his judgment was lacking cause he believed a lot of nonsense Choi Hye Mi told him (you do know she's ADMITTED to lying, right?).
I love that you still support Lee Min Ki - there's no more reason to believe the police in that case than in KHJ's or PSH's. Sorry.

But a 5 years gap without a drama is crazy!.

Required fields are marked *

there is definitely a double standard. actors get away with a lot more than actresses can and people often give the benefit of the doubt to men accused of abuse but not to the women who accuse them.

in this case though i think part of the reason for the difference is that while his misdeeds are worse than hers, his happened mostly behind closed doors. even if he confessed, it’s much easier for people to forgive and forget something if they didn’t witness it themselves. yoon eun hye’s scandal played out in front of cameras for the whole world to see, and even after it became known she continued to publicly engage in the behavior that public opinion had condemned her for.
i personally would much rather see her in a drama than him, but i can understand why korean viewers might have stronger negative feelings toward her.

Required fields are marked *

@RenOlshi, although I feel a bit awkward since this thread is all about KHJ but I try to give you some short explanation about YEH's situation.
The reason for YEH's taking hiatus isn't only just because of the 'scandal' but also because of her 'other' job as the owner of her own agency (J-Army) and some cafes (in Korea and Thailand). She's not just managing the agency but is also been busy managing her artists career (a singer & a rookie boyband called "W24"). Besides being a business woman she's also taking a post graduate study as a director. So taking a hiatus doesn't mean she's not busy at all off the screen.
As for the scandal, I read some Korean articles that Knet didn't really mind the scandal itself but more about how she handle the aftermath. Knet criticized her choice of words (don't use Yoon Eun Hye name) on her agency explanation regarding the allegation. YEH sides keep insisted that she didn't stealing the design and just apologized for not handle it in a right way.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

It's revealed that the words isn't composed by YEH herself but one of her staff. She's out of reach at the time.
Before the scandal itself YEH's been the target of Knet rage when she agreed to be paired with Park Shi Hoo (who's got into a big scandal back then) in a movie. It's also spurred by her decision to be more active in China. Taking variety show "Muse Dress 2" which made her got involved into scandal. The consequences that she's never anticipated before.

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I'm sure in the beginning she doesn't have a plan for taking long hiatus (on screen) but Knet hate make her into.
Personally, I don't see the use of taking long hiatus could impacted to Knet view on a celebs image since I see that SHK and IU still loved by them despite their scandals. But I think it's her decision we (her fans) should respected.

As for the "double standard", yes I agree with some posters here. Her scandal isn't any worse than some but why she's got the hate ??
Many Korean actresses & actors been active in China but why she's the only one who's got the hate ??

He was cleared of assault and after the paternity test, he said he would financially support his child. I don't see a reason not to give him a chance. Especially when it was revealed that the woman was lying about stuff, presented false texts and was trying to blackmail him. I don't trust people who release stuff to the media first instead of present it in court. Makes me think that the evidence won't hold up in court so they need the public to skewer the other person first. As has been said upthread, the media wants the drama. That is what generates clicks.

I've only seen him in Playful Kiss and the little I watched of BOF so Idk if he can really even act but I guess we'll see.

Required fields are marked *

I think the act of taking it to the media first usually comes from the fear of being silenced. Celebs with enough power can get away from court justice easier than they can get away from public opinion. However, this power to create a scandal is sometimes wielded viciously instead of truly wanting justice, which sucks though because it helps invalidate the many cases that do need to be pursued.

It's the same thing with the whole Chris Brown/Rhianna thing. everyone was (rightly) freaking out, then people started to forgive him pretty quickly, even Rhianna. If his fans can forgive his actually beating his girlfriend in his car - with photos to prove it - and Rhianna even "forgave" him. People still watch Johnny Depp movies, countless people have been defending all these men (justifiably) accused by women of sexual misconduct which boggles my mind.

I'm not saying that everyone has to move past his scandal, what I'm saying is that his personal business is his business, not mine.

I'm with you on the lies told during the whole ordeal. They were both dumb enough to keep seeing each other. Let those two handle their own business. Violence doesn't seem to be a pattern for him so I can give him the benefit of the doubt.

Sometimes people are just toxic to each other and drive each other to do things they would never normally do. Like War of the Roses. Sometimes, you gotta just stay out of a couple's drama.

For me, it depends on whether or not the person has changed his behavior and learned a valuable lesson and no longer commits the things he was charged with . So has Kim Hyun Joong changed, or was this behavior in his nature and he can't change?
I can think of many other actors who have been accused of abuse (Lee Min ki, for example who seems to have changed his behavior). And obviously most of the comments mention other males too.
Having said that, there sure seems to be a lot of accusing by the female victims. Do the actors "get away with it" and the females are vilified, or do the women falsely accuse? We'll never know the truth. But in a still patriarchal society it seems males can get away with much more, especially if they're marketable. The whole society will need to change. Oh, wait...I live in the U.S. - whatever happened to all the women who accused our "esteemed" President? Nobody seemed to care.
I have such mixed feelings because it seems no one is willing to believe a woman, no matter what, especially in the entertainment and political arena.
So I guess we each personally have a choice to make, whether or not to watch his drama, giving him a second chance (a third chance?).

After further thinking, it seems to me many of these young guys (whether or not they're rich and famous) feel "entitled" and consider women as objects. I'd say especially in a patriarchal society except that here in the U.S. and probably everywhere in the world, it's the same way.

Your comment about entitlement is so true. I sometimes wonder if we as “fans” contribute to their sense of entitlement. So many problematic actors. Lee MinKi’s case had me conflicted! In the US we have Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, etc.
Money and power distort reality for these guys. Would be better if actors were treated as people who do their jobs and not as celebrities?

It only takes one mistake to ruin a person's life.
I'm not sure I believe all of the charges - I've read some of them are rumors. Will do more research.
I thought just about all men get caught with DUIs at some time or another, or is it just a rumor that men in Korea drink a lot?
However, it still bothers me that most of the time the females are not believed. Very maddening.

Korea seems to be tolerant of drinking, so their sentences are sometimes too ridiculous.

You seem to be stuck in your beliefs since he was cleared of all charges of assault. She has been charged with fraud and tampering with evidence. It was also proven she was never pregnant those five other times she claimed to be pregnant.

Beyond the scandal, I didn't think he was regarded as a great actor in general. A mop could have provided the same quality performance in Playful Kiss. His part in Boys Over Flowers worked because he didn't really have to say much and we were all too focused on Lee Min Ho's terrible hiding behind random objects. I can't comment on Inspiring Generation because I didn't see it.

All these actors with woman abuse scandals making a comeback is starting to feel like the Entertainment community's undercover push back on the #MeToo campaign that rocked the beginning of this year.

It's almost like they're telling all the men, "Okay, you have a scandal and were fired due to #MeToo craziness, but just wait a little bit and we'll make you a star again." And they'te telling all the woman, "We actually didn't really care."

If anyone wants to support a Broadcaster that is very pro woman, then watch more JTBC shows. Their drama's always have strong and nuanced female leads with an overall feminist bend: Strong Girl Bong-soo, My Wife is Having and Affair This Week, Misty, Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food, Miss Hammurabi, Secret Love Affair, Welcome to Waikiki...

I think you give second chances to people who pay the penalty for their crimes. So many of these celeb offenders get off too easily, and he's the worst example of that. I DO think it's wrong to hold mistakes over someone's head forever, but this is something else to me.

What happens in your personal life has nothing to do with your acting, nobody’s perfect in this world this is OLD news no need to repeat it. I’m sure if it happened to you, you would want to make amends.. he’s taking responsibility for his child, the other party also lied big time it was proven in court so let’s leave this old news in storage

Please this is old news why repeat it. Acting has nothing to do with your personal life, nobody’s perfect this shouldn’t impead him from working... put yourselves in his shoes I’m sure you would want to be forgiven and not be reminded also he’s taking responsibility for his son the other party was proven that she lied about some things, after all the mess she wanted him back so I guess it wasn’t all bad

Wow, as I read these comments I am amazed at all the misinformation coming from various people. As it turned out, the ex-girlfriend was convicted of defamation and fraud. While Kim Hyun Joong should have been convicted of gross ignorance and stupidity, he was far less guilty of some of the things people have claimed in the comments. I also am really surprised that he is returning to television so quickly after so much bad and damaging publicity. While I never really was much of a fan for this actor, I do think it should be pointed out that around the time of the girlfriend issues or shortly before, he starred in a drama called Inspiring Generation. That drama was very violent and in it, he was beaten or in really severe fights about every episode. I would imagine that to play that character, violence was something on his mind every working day. Of course that it no excuse at all, but from a psychological viewpoint, it may have broken down some of his inhibitions about fighting in real life. It would be a whole lot easier to shove his girlfriend harshly when he has spent a good part of each day pretending to be someone that uses violence against others.
I just thought the whole mess of the relationship and the dui made this man look like a real idiot. While we will never know what really happened between the two, nor is it any of our business, they both seem like people who are out of control and embarrassing. I really don't think all this false information in the comments is necessary though, as much of it is not true at all and only makes the situation seem more pathetic.

Choi Hye Mi has been convicted of fraud, has admitted lying about the miscarriage and abortions (was only pregnant the one time), and has not only got no evidence of being beaten, has been shown to have lied on a medical certificate, & getting a DOCTOR to lie as well.

Ew, nope, nope, NOPE. I mean, Park Shi Hoo also had a successful comeback, which irritated me enough considering how successful his comeback is. And now KHJ?

I'm just livid that he not only has *fans* he also has directors and casting managers who think he's a great fit for a romance drama? Dude, there are tons of other actual choices out there in K-dramaland.

Oh la la! Who came up with this bright idea? Most likely KHJ is broke and looking for ways to make money since I’m sure he can’t cut it with music alone after his scandal. But the truth is, KHJ was never a good, strong or talented actor. Even without his scandal, I don’t believe he would have made the cut as an actor. And these days there are so many of his peers and dongsaengs who act so much better than him and don’t have the baggage of his scandal to overcome. Competition is fiercer this time around than six or seven years ago.

I hope no one recaps this drama...all the drama with him and park shi hoo that came from the community was ridiculous...i don't look forward to it again...its a shame really because no one was allowed to have an opinion...it became about supporting a "monster", victim bashing, people reliving their own abuses and a few people making up abuses to make a point. It's one of the reasons I don't frequent the site as much. It was a lynch mob and a complete turnoff for a positive space sharing something that we all love. As seen in these comments already, we're not able to have this discussion in a fair and rationale way so there's no need to keep bringing it up.

I'm not surprised a decent looking guy gets an easy comeback drama (Yoochun is probably next), though I am surprised anyone is even bothering offering this guy roles. Even when his image was good his dramas were failures and he can't act. What reason is there to give him a role now that his image is in the dumps and he's known as an abuser of pregnant women. What's the target audience here.

I can't understand people sometimes,
Yes Kim Hyun-Joong did so wrong by beating his girlfriend and all the other stuff but you gotta keep in mind that there is always two sides to a story, you don't know if his ex is completely innocent or what led to the incident and also, we tend to forget that we make mistakes too and also do bad things that may be worse than he did. But because he is a celebrity its put out there for the general public to criticize, come on, He is human at the end of it all.

I've never beat or physically assaulted anyone.. So no, I've never made a mistake like this or even remotely close to this.

I get that we shouldn't be casting stones since we don't know the whole story, but don't try and defend someone who might have ASSAULTED someone. That's not an 'oops I made a mistake tehe' type of thing. That's a very serious thing that should never be defended.

KHJ never beat his GF. We know Choi Hye Mi lied (she admitted it) and that she's been convicted in court of fraud. Also, she's lost all her civil court cases. She had zero evidence of ever being beaten, and there is evidence she got a doctor to lie on a medical certificate.

I wasn't even aware there was a scandal surrounding him. But even not knowing there was a scandal I was disappointed to see him cast since he is a terrible actor. He is so stiff and wooden and he really doesn't know how to emote.

When you do a recap of a court issue, I suggest you be accurate. Choi Hye Mi may have accused KHJ of beating her but she had no proof of that at all, and dropped the charges. She lied about him causing her to miscarry (admitted this), and about having multiple abortions (she's been convicted of fraud). KHJ NEVER ONCE denied paternity of that child - he simply wanted a paternity test done. OMG how does that equate with denial? In fact, he said the child could very well be his, plus the family court system in SK demands a paternity test - it's obligatory for legal child support. CHOI HYE MI is the one that had to be forced to comply. So THAT is an outright LIE.
Another lie - KeyEast never 'distanced themselves' from KHJ. He went into MS.
Get your facts straight.

He was not criminally charged so never appeared in criminal court. Was found responsible of beating his girlfriend in civil court and had to pay a fine. He should be in jail. His girlfriend has been vilified in SK. For whatever reason, she wanted revenge, felt he should have recieved a harsher punishment, she sued saying she had a miscarriage during one of the beating. No circumstantial evidence backed this up. She lost her case and was fined. Again for whatever reason they got together long enough to have a son. A son he is not allowed to see due to his violent nature. Which he admitted started in high school and usually ended up with him at the police station. I have heard that his girlfriend ended up in jail for lieing to the court. Hope this is not true. He has been found guilty in criminal court for fraud and drunk driving. The first ep of this drama recieved the rating of 0.1. S. Koreans after four years seem to be discusted with him. This is a Viki Original and they are having a difficult time finding translaters. Encouraging people at their website to leave good comnents about the translaters. I know two eps have English subs don't know about other languages. If ratings continue this low this will be his swan song. I for one don't think he should ever be seen again by the public.
