Tight embraces and secret flights for tvN’s Mother

The protectiveness is palpable in these character posters for tvN’s upcoming drama Mother, in which a teacher discovers that one of her students is being abused at home and decides to kidnap her. Lee Bo-young (Whisper) plays that teacher, who cradles her student (Heo Yool) to herself in the promos.

In the top poster, her character asks, “Can you call your teacher ‘Mother’?” while below in the wider group image, the copy tells us, “I absolutely tried not to become a mother.” That’s because the teacher character starts out rather cold, and it’s through her efforts to save the eight-year-old Hye-na that she develops a mother-daughter bond that melts her heart. In the other poster below featuring Lee Bo-young, the copy reads, “You are now throwing away your mother, can you do that?”

Lee Hye-young (Can You Hear My Heart, Boys Before Flowers) plays a woman who was a top actress before her husband betrayed her and left her poor and alone. She moves to the countryside where she meets Lee Bo-young’s character, and her poster tells us, “Even without a husband, I raised my child as the best in a comfortable life.”

Go Sung-hee (While You Were Sleeping) plays Hye-na’s “unstable mother,” who has been raising the girl on her own but views her with a mix of both love and hatred. She blames the girl for her unhappiness and for standing in the way of her pursuing her own dreams, and lashes out with anger. Hooo boy, if you’re pitting Lee Bo-young versus Go Sung-hee, I’m gonna have to bet on Lee Bo-young a thousand times over, in so many ways. Go’s poster says, “Hye-na, it’s good for you too if Mom’s happy, right?”

Lastly, in the preview clip below, Lee Bo-young tells the girl, “Teacher will be taking you away, without anyone knowing, to a place far away. Can you do it?”

Mother will follow Smart Prison Living as tvN’s next Wednesday-Thursday drama and premieres on January 24.

LEE BO YOUNG 😍 in the teaser and in the pictures and in real life, she's such a badass, UGH I love her acting so much! I'm really excited for this drama because I really love the premise. I have such a soft spot for those mother-daughter or father-daughter dramas/scenes and I know that there isn't going to be a moment when I'm not overly emotional on one end or the other. And, just like javabeans says, I have no doubt in my mind about who's going to take over this drama

I have only seen her in "I hear your voice", and I loved her. Definitively this is something I want to watch. Sounds a little bit Melo, but still... I don't mind crying with and for her!
I recommend you to watch I Hear Your Voice. 😊

I'm so excited for this! Haven't seen LBY in anything but from news and reviews of her work I know she's gonna be so good. I'm a little worried it might be too melo but from the teasers so far it seems to be thrilling so hopefully not too melo all the way.

I hope it gets executed right because I really really love the premise! More so because it seeks to define "Mother" in so many ways - which it looks like the 3 women above will show different facets of. I love LBY's facet the most though, how one can become a "mother" by choice and not necessarily by being the biological one. And the fact that it will skirt on moral greyness of whether the ends justify the means... bring it on!! ^^

The japanese is full on cryfest with lots of frustrations and angst so its not just melo but I'm expecting this to be full on drama.

OMG, all the characters posters are incredible!!! They just ooze emotion. So much feels!

“Hye-na, it’s good for you too if Mom’s happy, right?”
Classic. It could mean, "we both will be happy if you don't make me mad" or it could mean, "you'll be happy if leave with her and I'll be happy if I could have you as a burden".

Ji-sung & Lee Bo-young are one of the powerful actors couple in dramaland currently. I didn't even think highly for them as actors in the early days of their career but after enough experiences and developed enough acting skills, they truly have become great and amazing. The only genre that I don't impressed yet is sageuk, both of them did sageuks many years ago but nothing memorable imo.

I'm looking forward to see this drama, and Go Sung-hee keeps improving in each project too. Just hope, it will be subbed.

She totally spoiled my love for the Night Watchmen. But I think she' OK in While You We're Sleeping. It appears her role in this project should suit her too.

Well Go Seung Hee is not the greatest actrezz out there. But she ia quite reliable in her two drama I've watched, like spy and my beautiful bride, and those two drama is challenging enough to improve her acting IMO. Definitely she is more reliable than suzy. Lol

I was hating on her in the beginning of "My Beautiful Bride" but then she proved me wrong as the drama progressed.

Have no fear, PD Kim is the director here!

Agree totally. I first watched Ji Sung in the drama with Eugene (forgot the name) when I wasn't that into K-dramas, and I totally had no recollection of Lee Bo-young, who my sister later told me played his fiancée there. But how they impressed me in Kill Me, Heal Me and I Can Hear Your Voice respectively. Though, somehow I couldn't always finish their other dramas because they're too 'heavy' or too long in the case of My Daughter SY. This show again sounds a bit heavy too but I'll continue support LBY, and JS.

Save the Last Dance for Me.

This was the 2nd drama I watched (after Full House or did I watch it 1st?), and the last scene was totally perfect.

I remember thinking Lee Bo Young was really bland when I first saw her in Harvest Villa (pretty but low energy and charisma) and the little bit of her I saw in Ballad of Seodong wasn't eyecatching, but now I equate LBY with being fierce and charismatic.

I'm impressed that they managed to get Park Chan-wook's co-writer for this drama. His work is mostly arthouse type of films. (praised by the critics but doesn't appeal to the mass audience).
I think this might end up being good or better than the original with Jung and PD Kim.

PD Kim directed Go Sung-hee in "My Beautiful Bride" 💗 (her best work). She did well so I'm not worried about her acting here at all.
My favorite from this PD is "More Beautiful Than a Flower" with writer Noh Hee-kyung. Back in the days before she ended up with that one PD that shall not be named 😝.

I have high expectation with the quality of this show and I don't think I'll be disappointed.

I watch mostly historical series and they are pretty long.
-"Muhteşem Yüzyıl" ("Magnificent Century")
-Diriliş: Ertuğrul (Resurrection: Ertugrul)
-Filinta
-"Bizim Hikaye" (Our Story) is an adaptation of the British original "Shameless" (black comedy).

If you are not into historical series then you might want to ask @wapzy 🙂.

I like historical dramas that are done well :-)

I'm not familiar with Turkish films or dramas, so I'll look these up, thanks!

It looks based on the character descriptions that they've changed quite a lot especially the backstory of the main characters.
I don't think this will be as good a the jdorama version where the whole cast gave a incredible performance (and Ashida Mana was great)
I really recommend the original production, the writer Sakamoto Yuji his other work is fantastic like Soredemo ikite yuku, saikou no rikon, woman and quartet.

The make-up is really beautiful in all the close-up posters.

I like the main poster w/ all the characters: Lee Bo-young and Heo Yool (looking at her mother) in the center and the other two characters half cropped.

Also, I haven't seen Lee Hye-young since BBF. She always look sophisticated and elegant.

I love Lee Bo Young and the premise sounds interesting so I'll definitely tune in. There's been a lot of rave reviews about the Japanese original so I'm worried this won't live up to people's expectations, especially since people (including myself) would expect more from this given the stellar PD-writer combination. Although, at least for me, I haven't seen the JP version so I wouldn't have anything to compare it with. Crossing my fingers!

Is this a remake of the Japanese drama of the same name? Because that is one of my favorite dramas of all time. It also except for the ex husband and particulars of the stress between teacher and mom sounds a lot alike.

Watching the original Japanese version of this dreadful story almost broke my heart because, as if the circumstances were not awful enough in themselves (supposing they were purely immagined for the sake of the drama) I realised retrospectively that as a teenager (many decades ago I had witnessed some things earily similar to these (supposedly imaginary happenings). However, life is seldom all bad , even at the lowest eb and (getting back to Mother) the resolution of the drama, though ostensibly bleak on one level, in a deeper perspective it is actually cathatrtic. It offers a proof that love transcends everything and neither time nor decay can subvert such love. The protagonist, intrinsicly good but damaged by the vagaries of life, is moved to protect the young and vulnerable and intrinsically good. Something gets the better of her finer emotions, nobler self. Is it envy? Is it lust? Is it some sort of perversion? NO, all that is a charisma: it is simply the dreadful state of being alone, starved of company, of affection, of perhaps nothing more than sympathetic human interaction. I found this so painful to watch, but also very redeming as in the end it affirms the most important values; those which make us human.
