[Theme of the Month] Write an alternate ending to a drama whose ending sucked

It’s November (oh my god), which means it’s time to roll out a shiny new Theme of the Month. Goodbye, escapist dramas in alternate realities, hello alternate endings.

We’ve all seen a drama or two (…hundred) with endings that left us feeling deflated, or disappointed, or in some cases, frothing at the mouth in outrage. We’ve already made a list of some of our most disliked endings—although I’m noting that that post was back in October 2015 and a few new contenders have come and gone in the interim, threatening some of those entries’ places on the list.

Well, time to do something with that bitter disappointment and make an ending that sucked a little less sucky.

Rewrite the ending of a drama with a disappointing ending.

Maybe it was an awesome drama that was so exciting that it was impossible to make an ending live up to its promise, so the finale felt like a letdown. Maybe the show fizzled out with a bland ending, turning the entire drama into a forgettable affair. Or maybe it was just a real stinker of a conclusion, with WTF plot twists or nonsense logic or lazy resolutions—or worse yet, non-resolutions. Or maybe by some unholy magic, it was all of those things.

Now’s your chance to make it all right again and give us a chance to wash our brains of the original endings with what could have, and probably should have, been.

To submit:

  • Email your submissions to [email protected]. If you have a registered Dramabeans account, include your handle so we can link to it.
  • Include at least 1 image, though more is preferred.
  • Suggested length: Between 500 and 1,000 words.
  • Deadline: We will post these on a rolling basis, so we’re taking submissions now. We will cut off accepting submissions on November 25. If you miss this month, join us for a new theme next month!

Cheese in the Trap, Scarlet Heart R, and PS I Love You.

PS I Love You just needs one tweak. It ended with a death, and I cried, then decided to add another death, so unexpected that I laughed. Totally ruined this tragedy for me.

Cheese in the Trap passed, or was excellent, through episode 12. One thing the webtoon did that the drama didn't was to show how compatible Jung and Seol were, and how much fun they had, so even before 12 we needed to see that. They still had time after 12 but didn't go there.

The drama had set up some challenges that needed to be dealt with before the end: Jung's relationship with Inho, Seol remaining true to herself and not becoming more like Jung except maybe to become more assertive, and Jung working on himself with a psychiatrist to improve his empathy.

To improve empathy, many people take up creative writing, and are encouraged to write from the point of view of someone they do have a connection with.

I always thought it would be a great ending if Jung did go away to improve himself in that manner, and told Seol when he returned he had spent the last few years writing and drawing a manwha (remember it was established he liked drawing early on) mainly from her and friends' points of view. He flips open a book of coloured drawings, and suddenly the entire drama flips before our eyes with that great theme song playing. We realize the entire drama has been written by Jung trying to understand, imagine and empathize with Seol's point of view.

The question left on the table for Seol (who has suddenly become a bit mysterious to the audience if that was Jung writing her), is how did Jung do? A sucker for a happy ending, I'd cue lights, a teary smile and some kind of physical connection. We watch them walk away hand in hand, Seol remonstrating with Jung on how he drew her hair or more embarrassing moments.

Scarlet Heart Ryeo needed a script revision from beginning to end, but it hit well on major dramatic moments usually. A key moment they missed, or sucked all dramatic tension from, is when So finally realizes it's Wang Soo for her. For some reason the drama stopped being from her POV so we were missing her internal dialogue in key scenes. By the time the ending rolled around, it didn't make a lot of sense, but then it couldn't really, because the drama itself had stopped making sense. I am someone who loved this drama but found it incredibly frustrating, because essential scenes always seemed to be missing. So I don't think a happier or more ambiguous ending would save it. It really needed a proper editor.

You think I should write it for Cheese. I posted it when the drama was airing as a possible ending, and everyone on DB seemed to think it would work really well so Im tempted.

But what do they mean write it? Just like above, or as if we were writing a novel ending?

Anyway for some reason I cant edit above post, should be Im Sorry, I Love You, not PS I Love You.

Marriage Contract should have ended at episode 14, the last two episodes were totally superfluous.

But the ending was still beautiful. I wouldn't like it any other way. That's why endings are important. I didn't care for the last bit of makjang noble idiocy because it still satisfied me in the end.

1.moon lovers
2.reply '94
3.reply '88 when we see more of the love triangle than than Bo ra making an emotional connection with every person.
4.aarang & the magistrate because the last couple of episodes made no sense to me.
5.she's so lovable because ... wow.it was....quite something
6.any Hong sisters supernatural themed drama because awesome as they are mostly, sometimes I don't get the ending logic of how the star crossed lovers finally found a way to be together.

This is a GOLD theme DB! Granted, while some really good dramas had not so great endings(at least they were decent for a good run), for most I prefer to rewrite the middle to change the very questionable course certain dramas took. You know how you as a drama addict often have this amazing ideas for a story, but beyond the beginning that would only be good enough for a pilot but would completely crumble past the fourth episode? For whatever reason, tonnes of dramas are like that. Looking at you, Whisper. And Cheese. And I could go one for eternity. 🙄

This is going to be such a fun read, looking forward to each entry!

I didn't see this drama come up in any of the comments, but hello Lucky Romance!

I want to re-write Bo Nui's character from the middle part so she actually seems like she has a brain. And that she's human. 'Cos I'd do away with that god-awful noble idiocy

i see cheese in the trap on showcase, but i kinda liked the bittersweet ending... i mean he DID open the email. it's just things got to crazy before that. Someone needs to do W two worlds because starting episode 8... the show went downhill. Or cinderella and the four knights (like the girl completely changed mid show... the show had potential to be sweet and cheesy, but just trend out cheesy)

My writing skills are poor, but someone pretty please end the Schrodinger's cat ending (a.k.a. dead/alive duality) of That Winter the Wind Blows !

I mean, mostly I actually think the ambiguous ending fits the aura, but on the other it left me hanging in a state of numbness for days so I could do with some healing!

My first thought was crazy 😂

It's definitely a fun idea but their definitely will be crazy endings.

Just imagine Manhole could have turn into a horror drama (I don't know about you but even the aliens would be frustrated and hunt Bong Pil down for not getting the girl after so many chances)

Hwarang could actually have no romance (hint:Ship off Ah-Ro)

God's Gift could have an actual ending... (I don't even need to say anything)

The possibilities are endless we can even kill off the main characters.
That was definitely one I couldent stand but I'll leave that to your interpretions

To be honest the ending of age of youth season 2 was perfect in my opinion. And there’s also a possibility of them having a third season. But if anyone kind enough to write the alternate ending for jiwon and Sungmin id be eternally grateful. If I have the skills to write I would but english is not even my first language so yeah.. haha

I wish I had the time to write this! My list of drama endings that have scarred me is so long. This is especially so when the drama is so good but then the ending is just so random... Or sometimes Im just in denial and I need my happy ending.

Off the top of my head I'm thinking God's Gift, High Kick Through The Roof, The King 2 Hearts, Gu Family Book, Rooftop Prince, School 2015.

I'm not even counting dramas that need a much more substantial rewrite like Big and Moon Lovers.

The picture of Gwangjong from Scarlet Heart Ryeo! Yes, the definition of wtfed ending. At that point, after 20 hours spent in the drama, half of it crying btw, I would have forgiven a 5 min cliched ending of our OTPs meeting at the present times. I don't care if it's an open ended, whatever! A little hope would have been better than 10 minutes of product placement and 5 mins of that forgetable prince (what's his name again? the 9th one!). But when I think about it on later months, even a year after and a few good fanfiction, I honestly believed the writer was brave for disappointing all the fans. Good job writer! you made me research so much about Goryeo while watching Scarlet.

1. Mystery Queen although we will have season 2 next year. Hopefully it will be as interesting as the 1st season. Loving the duo so much!
2. Scarlet Heart - lee jong ki was so alone and resentful! cried my heart out
3. Reply 1988 - didn't mind Park Bo Gum end up becomes the husband again, but I just wish that RJY got to properly confess and Hyeri to at least confirm his feeling although rejecting it. To just keep the feeling to himself just make me suffer as an audience and can we at least get him one true love to end with cause the drama focus too much on his feeling but ended up with nothing about him!

Honestly I hated Goblin's ending. It was all good until the last few episodes then BAM the ending was so disappointing that it ruined the whole drama for me. It could've been so good, but unfortunately it lost its steam.

Very interesting to read all the endings. At the university, I was writing a script with https://edubirdie.com/critical-thinking-writing and it turned out to be hard. But sometimes the series end so stupidly that it is exciting to create an alternative ending.
