IU to romance Lee Seon-kyun for My Ajusshi?

That question mark is there because the casting is not finalized, but it’s also there because that’s my state of mind about this scenario: Is this a pairing we want to see? I don’t know. I don’t definitively hate it… but I don’t love it… and mostly I’m confused.

So, let’s unpack these feelings: IU (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) has been offered and is “seriously considering” a lead role in the upcoming tvN drama My Ajusshi, which has now confirmed Lee Seon-kyun (This Week, My Wife Will Have an Affair) in the starring role. I love Lee Seon-kyun, he broke my heart in This Week, and he is definitely on the top of my list of favorite ajusshis. Attached is Misaeng and Signal director Kim Won-seok, who is amazing. Writing is Oh Hae-young Again’s Park Hae-young.

On the other hand, IU. I’ve liked her very much in some roles (The Producers), but also really disliked her in others (Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Pretty Man). She seems so very young, and I’m not sure her acting chops (which have potential, but are inconsistent) can match Lee Seon-kyun. I can squint and sort of envision this working out okay, but I also can’t help but think there are actresses who might be better. (Is Park So-dam free?)

But I recognize that the casting is playing to that sense of awkwardness intentionally, to draw out the premise of “a romance between a fortysomething man and a twentysomething woman living completely different lives, but both feeling the same weight of those lives.” I imagine that it’s those differences that make for a compelling connection as they look at each other’s lives and offer healing to each other.

Perhaps the most compelling point: By this point I basically trust PD Kim to do whatever he wants because he’s so in command of his craft. I’m definitely intrigued. I don’t even know if I want IU to say yes or no, but I suppose I’m equally fine with either scenario.

My Ajusshi is aiming for an early 2018 broadcast, with plans to begin filming at the end of November.

Maybe this show could give us a "Prime minister and I"-vibe, which by the way has to be rewritten in our monthly theme?! LOL.

The rapport and chemistry in PMAI were such a pleasant surprise. At first, I was iffy about the pairing because they looked like father-daughter but they really made it work! (I pretend that terrible ending doesn't exist)

So who knows, maybe this could work and be a surprise like PMAI. I prefer IU as a singer than an actress, but there's Lee Seonkyun and team is solid. I wonder if there's another candidate for the female lead, though?

IU is someone I just recently discovered and instantly became a fan of her music. What a great artist! As for acting, I must agree that it has been a hit or a miss. I liked her as Lee Soon Shin but couldnt stand her in Pretty Man. The Scarlet Lovers was just ok, but the director and the story line really sucked. IU was convincing but anything else in the production was beyond her control. My favorite character IU ever portrayed was Cindy from the Producers. Her performace was achingly beautiful that you felt IU really understood the character very well which made that performance memorable. Two years after the Producers, I am still crying with what that Cindy character went through as the price of k pop fame. Now if IU’s agency can can bring the same team of advisers from Producers in collaboration with my favorite PD from Signal then rest assured this will be a good project. Knowing PD Kim, this will not be a usual fantasy rom com but probably more like closer to a painful reality which is btw IU does so well judging from her portayal of Cindy. It’s when she acts that exerted cuteness in her dramas that she gets into trouble. I liked her when she played refined, bitchy, and flawed characters.

I didn't know much about IU in real life other than the fact that she grew up poor. But I agree with what you said about her portrayal of Cindy and especially what you said about what this new drama might have been, and that's why she was considering doing it. She got 10 offers and this was the one she chose, so there must be something in the story that connects with her. I won't be surprised that most of her other offers are of the cute kind. But it's too damn bad that his drama may never see the light of day after the stink raised by her fans. I feel so bad for the PD, writer, and LSK and won't blame any older actors if they all decide to never act alongside her anymore lest they are called old and gross. Yet on the other hand I wish that she would say the hell with all the fans' uninformed opinions and go ahead and act the hell out of this drama and prove everyone wrong. I mean, look at this PD's resume. He must know what he is doing tackling a subject like this.

There is nothing wrong in an Ajusshi romance, love is love ;) .

Music Cue: José José "Cuarenta y Veinte" (Literally "Forty and Twenty")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86FCW0GRRcc

On the other hand I suppose that for the average man seeing a 20 something young man with a 40 years old woman could see disgusting too. I had a fortyplussomething friend who was dating with a eighteen years young man. Her friends felt ackward towards them (he was younger than her son!!!), but she happened to become an excellent influence over him.

I used to call her "MamaNovia" (MomGirlfriend), and is a friend I still miss.

But if something can be said, there are some things that are lost between generations: for example my nickname for my College friends was Droopy. A person my own age gets the point right off the bat (a good laugh is a nice clue), but a youngster doesn't understand and I have to explain that you could find me in the most unexpected places. The in-joke is lost.

My point is, it is far easier to get rapport and common background if you share some culture, and well, generations tends to have their own cultures. But if you find what you are looking for in somenoe much younger then, good for you!.

Thanks for your Posts!.

I think that's what the drama is going for. The description talks about a romance between a man in his 40s and a woman in her 20s so IU being cast fits the role. If it's not her it would be someone else equally young. I personally don't mind age gaps where the man or woman is older, even large age gaps, as long as both are consenting adults.

The thing I was getting annoyed with is when they were casting late 20s early 30s actors to play someone who was supposed to be the same age as a teenage girl. Like Bring it On Ghost, Mirror of The Witch, etc..

First, let me just say how much I've missed Javabeans' postings in the news section. Second, do we know that there will be a romantic line between the two leads? Third, I have the same thoughts as JB about this casting. The good thing is Lee Seon-kyun seems to be able to bring out the best in his co-stars. Just look at Lee Yeon-hee in Miss Korea.

I don't think IU is a bad actress, she emotes well as long as the director doesn't always have the camera 2 inches from her face and going o_0. Her role and performance in Producers was really good and not just 'for an idol/'improved from before' kind of good, she did well even in scenes that were ordinary and not the big emotional kind of scenes.

I still feel angry over the ending of Moon Lovers and that whole drama with too many closeups but that's not IU's fault if the director keeps screwing up.

I hope she declines. I liked her in Producer but that was the only time I liked. She also look younger than her age (I have no problem with huge age gap though) and I don't think she have enough acting chop to act alongside a veteran like Lee Sun-kyun.

Oh no......aside from the mismatch in age and appearance, it's the acting dept that I'm worried about. Not only will she look like his daughter and her acting shortcomings will be even more illuminating. I understand the narrative is to have them having a huge age gap but she looks like she's in her teens.

I respect IU but as a musician a lot, I do.......age gap isn't a factor to me, IU isn't consistent as an actor, she needs careful guidance, very little to offer on her own, so no..........bad idea.

I agree with javabeans on this one, I'd much rather see a young but convincing actress like Park So Dam or even Kim Tae Ri (who admittedly is already cast alongside a much older actor in LBH for Mr Sunshine) here rather than IU. The main issue with IU is that she doesn't really emote and usually has this wide eyed look that ends up looking too "young and naive" so I feel it'll feel a little wrong to have her pair with LSK. Whereas actresses like Kim Tae Ri or Park So Dam can pull off young but mature? I mean kinda like in Beautiful Mind when PSD was with JH and I somehow bought that pairing. IU and LSK really feel like uncle-neice to me.

I don't mind age gaps as long it's a proper gap and age for both, and aside fom IU bad acting she doesn't look good with him she looks like his niece, they should consider how the leads look with each other before offering the roles, same as Kim Tae Ri and Byun Hun he looks too old for her, i as a viewer would be disturbed by their unmatched visuals and can't see them as a romantic material or take them seriously.

Isn't that the intention? The story is about woman in her 20's with man in her 40's. So they trying to cast a young woman in her 20's (IU is 24) to the actor in his 40's they already have.

IU is incosistent, but I've read the character description... And it felt like maybe the writers had her in mind while writing the character.

Not only the character's name is similar to her name (Lee Ji-an to Lee Ji-eun), but the background is similar too... poor, growing up with her grandmother, and having and "old soul" due to her circumstances. So maybe this could work just fine.

Uggh darn it!!! I do hope that she at least audition in front of the PD and the veteran actor and they were impressed by her. That's the only rationale explanation I can think of on why she is being casted. PD is not casting her because she is popular.

@kiara mentioned on her post that veteran Na Moon Hee is also being considered. Though, for what role I don't know.

1

Uhm she's not likely cast because she auditioned, because I doubt huge stars like her need to. Even articles say that she's highly sought after by producers because of her popularity this year from her music, collaborations and appearance on Hyori's Homestay. But IU is a decent actress, so maybe there's hope.

Required fields are marked *

Na Moon Hee is considering an offer to play the mother of LSK and his brothers. The younger brother has been cast, the older brother hasn't. This is another reason why the casting of IU is so puzzling to me; they wasted no efforts going after seasoned veterans like Na Moon Hee and LSK, and then IU? I really hope this is highly intentional and not because other better actresses are currently busy.

Eh? I don’t know about this pairing. It could work... but it mostly screams miss to me. I can’t imagine how a kiss scene between them would be like and I wonder at the chemistry. She does seem a little too young for him despite her age and maturity. Maybe it’s because she’s so petite? And I think he works better with more seasoned and experienced leading ladies like Honey Lee or Gong Hyo Jin. I can even see him with Yoon Eun Hye... I’m wondering when she’ll make a comeback. All the men with much bigger scandals have made or are making a comeback, so why can’t she?

It might be a stretch for GHJ or YEH to play a 20 something? Not from an acting ability perspective but just the visuals and audience perception.

But it would be great to see YEH back in something that could challenge her dramatically. But it would be difficult - she's in kind of a neither here nor there situation. Tough for a team to cast her as lead, maybe as main supporting cast? (which is a bit of a blow to her ego perhaps. Not saying that she has a big ego but she was pretty much an A-lister some time back)

It seems her heart (according to her) is no longer in acting, so this may never come to fruition, though.

I would have to agree with javabeans for Park So Dam (Cinderella and the 4 Knights), the role will likely suit her. I have nothing against IU but she's the reason why i didn't continue watching Scralet Heart Ryeo despite of Lee Jun Ki. I was also a great fan of Misaeng, Signal and Oh Hae-young Again. Aw, I like both of them, but I’m not sure about this pairing. IU can look older and mature at times so I’m not too iffy about how they look together. I’d be more uncomfortable if Park So Dam was paired with him. She looks very young. Her pairing with Jang Hyuk in Beautiful Mind managed to be okay because there were barely any romantic/skinship moments.

Besides the looks, the acting has a big gap. I liked IU fine in Moon Lovers. She was not the main problem there. But Lee Seon Kyun is on a whole other level.

I think Hyeri and Jisung and there will be Kim Ji Sook's drama with age gap, Gong Yoo had no chemistry with Kim Go Eun, IU and Lee Jun Ki was not a very good paring, but since huge age gap is Ok nowadays with most actors marrying women 20 years younger, seems like the trend for ahjussi romances follwing the noona romances. Art is reflection of life.

But -UGH- on the other hand we have this amazing team of a PD and writer that is bound to create something beautiful. toi toi toi!

Kinda jazzed about this in a way and in many ways not.

On the good side, I am heading to HK to see IU in her concert later this month. It's a long flight for a concert but I've done worse (ha ha... flying across the country to watch James Taylor once and another trip to catch Elton John)

Selfishly, I'd love to see IU focus on her music. She has, to me, such a great talent with the potential to become a musician's musician; honing her songcraft and paving her own way musically. Of course, it is her choice but I think the world needs another Carole King/Sara Bareilles more than it needs another idol/singer/actress/variety show performer.

I don't read Korean and have to rely on Google translator, but I think the articles are saying that this is problematic. I now worry that this project may not happen at all, and what a pity considering the PD-writer team and the prospect of having LSK back on the small screen. :( If only the offer had been made to someone less well-known, or someone with a more mature vibe, this probably wouldn't have blown up the way it did.
