[Theme of the Month] Challenge! Revisit an old drama

It’s August, which means it’s time to set aside our Changing Tastes theme and introduce our new one for the month! (Side note of panic: How is it August already? How, who, where, whaaa? Time stops for no one.)

The prompt for August is a little different than the past two months, in that we’re making it a “challenge” on top of a write-up. Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

Revisit a drama you’ve already seen, which you haven’t seen in a while, and let us know: Is it any different this time around? Does it hold up, or was it really best left in its own time? Do you still love it as much as you used to? What’s changed, and what hasn’t changed at all?

Tip: You needn’t watch every single episode of the drama in order to participate — we’re not slave-drivers! By all means watch the whole thing if you like, but it’s not a requirement.

I bet some of you are rubbing your hands together and cackling in glee over this one. You got this!

To submit:

  • Email your submissions to [email protected]. If you have a registered Dramabeans account, include your handle so we can link to it.
  • Include at least 1 image, though more is preferred.
  • Suggested length: Between 500 and 1,000 words.
  • Deadline: We will post these on a rolling basis, so we’re taking submissions now. We will cut off accepting submissions on August 25. If you miss this month, join us for a new theme in September!

(Tip: Please name your documents and attachments something other than “Theme of the month” or “Dramabeans,” please! Submissions can be hard to track if they’re all named the same thing.)

sometimes as i am describing a drama to my friends to convince them to watch it, it makes me realize how much i loved the drama and how good it was, and i always end up thinking to myself, what the heck. i'm going to re-watch this while i'm at it too. i've re-watched some episodes of school 2013, reply 1988, king 2 heart, kill me heal me, etc and they still never fail to make me cry.

I've watched Healer SO many times it's insane. I actually have rewatched eps while it was airing because I was having trouble following the past storyline so my watch pattern was like this:

1-4 initial binge; 5-6; 1-6
7-8; 5-8;
9-10, 11-12, 13-14;
3-5, 15, 16

Mind you this was WHILE it was airing. Then there were two more linear rewatches later.

I am thinking of re-watching Healer because unlike most beanies, I did not find it anything special. I enjoyed the show enough, but generally it was just ok for me. JCW was okay for me in it. I watched SP and hoped that it will be the drama that will make me a JCW fan and it did! I realized that I like JCW best in rom-com compared to action.

I rewatched it for the 3rd time last week and I have to say it was still as amazing as the first time I've watched it! It's probably one of the few dramas I could rewatch multiple times without getting bored ^^

Heartless City has been on my list for a re-watch and actually, I started yesterday due to a screencap I saw on the beanie wall. Oh boy....I had forgotten Soo's favorite word. ? It brought me joy hearing it again.

7

Required fields are marked *

Gosh, I'm on my first-watch of Heartless City, episode 11 to be specific, and I already know it is going to end up on one favorite list or another of mine.. Jung Kyung-ho might just be one of the hottest men ever. He just commands such attention, I can't look away whenever he's on screen.

This reminds me so much of the Cantonese movie, "Infernal Affairs," featuring Tony Leung and Andy Lau. It's, like, getting an extended version of the movie, only...I love this drama just as much for entirely its own merits. I love almost all the side characters, including the villains. The only character I might have a slight issue with is the main female lead, played by Nam Gyu-ri. But this is just soooooooo good.

Main point is: I would LOVE to read your re-watch thoughts of Heartless City, if that's what you decide to write about!!! *Fighting!*

I was also a fan of Meteor Garden. (I was a piano nerd back then, and I remember saving this beautiful Ni Yao Di Ai piano midi, and convert it into notated form using Cakewalk! Haha, so many ancient terms!)

I'm not so sure how MG holds up for me now, sixteen years later. (Per Wikipedia, MG aired in 2001. Was that really 16 years ago?!?) As a teenager, I was so so giddy amazed by Dao Ming Si's love for Shancai. ? But by Boys Over Flowers time seven years later, I already couldn't stand Jun Pyo. ? As I get older, apparently, I have less and less patience for bad boys. ?

I re-watched Secret Garden earlier this year and I don't think I'll be watching it again save for maybe watching clips of my favorite scenes. I personally can't pin-point the reason why I didn't enjoy it as much upon re-watch but since I'd already seen the jokes before they didn't make me laugh as much as I did the first time so that was a major bummer for me. I still will always have fond memories of how much SG cracked me up the first time I watched it though.

I wholeheartedly agree. Secret Garden was kinda like BOF for me: fun to watch for the first time, too bad to watch again, and too shameful to tell people that I ever enjoyed them. I will always remember the body swapping humor, but I don't really like any characters: the hero was an immature, slimy, elitist jackass, the heroine flips personality rapidly between a strong, independent woman and an embarassing puddle of tears, the washed-up singer is also slimy, and the socialite ex-girlfriend actually deserves better.

Oooh, great idea! Also, can't believe July is already over too! I am thinking of rewatching master's sun which was my first kdrama. I remember sitting up late the night i watched the episode where so ji sub gets stabbed and continued to watch two or so episodes and i used to sleep early then. But, afterwards I became a drama addict and now find it almost impossible to sleep at that time. Also, I remember telling my friend (whom I was updating with the story after watching each episode, lol) the next day that there was a big twist and that it was so sad to watch, And she got excited saying "tell me, tell me". Ah, Good times. I am wondering if watching it again will bring back the same feelings.

I've had the biggest urge to rewatch Master's Sun even though I watched it fairly recently (end of 2015). I really did enjoy that drama.

Omo. I'M RIGHT HERE!

Yes yes yes! We totally talked about this! I thought of you when I mentioned the classics like Coffee Prince and Sam Soon, on one of my comments here. And it's funny because I've actually started a mission project of my own with a fellow Beanie (@sicarius) to watch/finish up Moonlight Drawn By Clouds.

That's definitely on my to be watched list. Ahhh, I wish I had the time to do all the things :/. It would have been the perfect time to re-try Sam Soon and see if that drama still irks me.

This prompt came at the perfect time. I am listening to old DB podcasts which has planted the bug to rewatch some older dramas. This is going to be so much fun! Now I have to decide what to watch first. Hmmmmm...

Hmmmm.... I've been thinking about "Coffee Prince" for a while. Maybe it's time I actually put in the time? Though I may have to wait for September, I got a fair load of writing assignments for August already (and it's only the 2nd day of the month, good lord!)

Ah! I want to send a submission but I don't really have time to write properly. I recently rewatched Operational Proposal and realized how young and immature Yoo Seungho's acting was. I know, shocking. And I love Yoo Seungho too.

I guess during my first time watching the show, I couldn't really scrutinize the acting because of all my tears. I cried so, so much. This time, when Yoo Seungho's character cried, I laughed out loud. His wailing and his facial expressions were both so exaggerated and unnatural. There are certain things he do so well as an experienced actor, but I could see very well that back in 2012, he was still transitioning from a child actor to an Actor. Child actors get praised for strong emotional expressions and sometimes even get coached on facial movements. In Operational Proposal, Yoo Seungho was doing things that he was doing as a child actor, but at 19, it comes across as too unnatural and comical.

It's fascinating to see how far he's come since. Nowadays, it's a delight to watch Yoo Seungho because he's able to emote strong emotions with just his eyes or the subtle microexpressions. Gone are the days when actors have to open their eyes really wiiiiiide for three seconds to expression surprises.

This is not to say that Yoo Seungho was anyway bad as a child actor, because I looooove his roles as a child. He's so gifted, and yet he reinvented himself and his acting style as an adult. Operational Proposal was an awkward transitional phase and the evidence that no one is immediately great at what they do, even if they'd been great at what they did before.

Hmm, your analysis was interesting to say the least, @chii-le. Admittedly, I haven't seen OPERATION PROPOSAL but I'm planning too soon. I just love the original so much (the Japanese Proposal Daisakusen) that I'm so wary of the remake. Would look out for this observation.

That's what I wonder... will classics like Full House, My Name Is Kim Sam Soon, and Stairway to Heaven be just as enjoyable if I were to re-watch it now? I recently re-watched Coffee Prince and I'm happy to report that THAT show definitely withstands the test of time! Also, My Girl--so fun! I saw KBS World upload episodes of Full House on their YouTube channel, and was tempted to re-watch the series. I don't know how I got through watching all of Stairway to Heaven, but I know for sure that when I do get to re-watching it, I'd be a big emotional mess, since Park Shin-hye everyone cries in like, every episode. Oh, and a lot of stuff goes down.

I've watched My Name is Kim Sam Soon and still love Samsoon. Unfortunately, the hero is just immature and has a violent temper. It's such a great drama about women, but the men portrayed are mostly disappointing.

A few years after Full House became popular, I tried watching it. However, I couldn't get into it because, somehow, everything looked ... dated?

But it'd be interesting to see how the acting skills of the actors have changed/grown.

Full house was my first drama! I don't think I've rewatched it. I think I'm a bit afraid of how it holds up because it was the beginning of an 11 year drama affair! Should I rewatch it? What if the fantasy is broken?

I've rewatched Full House, Coffee Prince and Secret Garden the past year and I still liked them the second timearound. I found myself still laughing at the funny seasons and moved in the emotional scenes. I cannot say the same for Stairway to Heaven, which somehow felt dated already when I tried to re-watch last year.

KillHeal, My Love From The Star (4),Shut Up FBB, Reply 1988 (3)... there are more dramas... I usually don´t watch any drama that I like less than 3 times in a row.

I go back to it every time a drama slightly disappoints me and there were several in 2016 alone. I also go back to it whenever I start a new crime /procedural drama to see if they compare. and I just go back to it, let´s admit, to see Seo In Guks´broad shoulders in a pink sweater. or to imagine myself in the psycho dinner table

I remember you telling us in another thread about how you've watched IRY 34 times... I was in awe then, but after looking at your list, I'm more in awe than ever!

I have watched the 80s Cantonese ~50+ episode dramas "Return of the Condor heroes" and "The Dragon Sword and Heaven Sabre" each at least over 10 (but I think under 20) times... I can still rewatch parts of them, but no longer can I start from the beginning and go all the way thru. Too many newer dramas, not to mention books, on my list!

Now I'm curious, which dramas have people rewatched? I haven't rewatched too many because I'm already having trouble keeping up with new dramas, but these are the ones I've watched twice:
Reply 1997, Reply 1988, MLFAS, and Healer.

These are ones I plan to watch again: Chicago Typewriter, Secret Love Affair, Jealousy Incarnate.
