Lee Na-young considers comeback with indie film Beautiful Day

If this really happens, it will definitely be a coup for the producers behind the low-budget indie film. Lee Na-young (Runaway Plan B), aka one half of the most elusive celebrity couple in Korea, is considering a comeback with a leading role in Beautiful Day (working title), which would end her 5-year acting hiatus.

Originally titled Mom, the plot centers around a mother and her child who are Chinese of Korean descent, commonly referred to as Joseon folk. It will be a human drama, which suggests it might be a tearjerker, but it will definitely be interesting to watch a story about people not commonly represented onscreen.

I do hope Lee Na-young signs up for this or another project soon, because it’s been too long since I’ve watched something with her in it. Her last leading role was 2012’s Howling, in which she co-starred with Song Kang-ho (Age of Shadows), although she had bit parts in Japanese film SPEC: Close and omnibus film Woman, Man in 2013 and 2015, respectively. She’s been away from dramaland for even longer, and her last drama was Runaway Plan B back in 2010. I can’t believe it’s been 7 years since then. Where has the time gone?

Beautiful Day plans to start production in the latter half of the year. I have a lot of residual love for Lee Na-young ever since MBC’s Ruler of Your Own World, which aired back in 2002, so finger’s crossed she confirms. Now, what would it take for her to convince her hubby Won Bin to return as well?

I have never even heard of this actress. It sounds like she is good, so interested to see her in a movie that sounds pretty good. She's married to Won Bin!! Lucky girl!!!

Aww man, Lee Na-young. Been ages since she's in anything. I still remember her best in Please Teach Me English, with Jang Hyuk. They were hilarious and adorable together. Hope she picks a project soon!

The industry would be so shook if husband and wife make acting comebacks soon. I so want to see it happen.

the world would probably explode if they both did their comebacks as leads in the same drama/movie

Acting is like a blade. You have to sharpen it with years of experience. Unless people are only buying a hype.

Won Bin esp who has been literally away from showbiz for a long time. I could probably understand if even he was not acting at least during his absence he was producing dramas or movies or at least anything related to the industry.

Wow. Lee Na Young. At this point, she's almost an urban legend, I can't remember her last project. She's a beauty. If this goes through, it's going to be so exciting.

That really caught my attention as I have been keeping an eye open for RULER OF YOUR OWN WORLD for about 6 months. Has anyone watched it recently with good English subtitles? It seems to be scarcer than hen's teeth, likely because of its vintage. -- Thanks!

It's on Dramafever, Viki, and Tubi TV. If you have a Xbox, it's also on the MBC America app. I watched it on Dramafever 2 years ago and loved it. The subtitles on Dramafever and Tubi TV are sourced from a fansub done many years ago I believe. Viki's I believe is hard coded from MBC America, I think. The quality of the subs are okay, they could be better, but they were good enough.

I will warn you that the print on Viki/Tubi TV and Dramafever is different. The Dramafever print is from the DVD and I think it's the director's cut. Viki/Tubi TV is from the television broadcast. There are some different music cues and some dialogue changes. Some of the changes improve the drama, some do not. Either way, I do recommend the drama regardless of which version you watch. It was great.

If none of those options are available in your region, both versions are floating around the usual places online. The fansubs are also floating around the web.

@dopefish May 23, 2017 at 5:36 PM:

Gee, thanks, dopefish! You made my day. ;-)

Viki in the US has entire episodes without subtitles, and relatively few that are nearly complete. I took another gander at DramaFever, and this time, eureka!! (I usually watch elsewhere, so am not up to date on their offerings.) Thanks for the pointer to Tubi TV. They are new to me, and I found a couple of films I didn't expect to find.

Thanks for mentioning Xbox and the MBC America app. I log on via laptop, but I'm sure the various hardware options will be helpful to someone here.

I appreciate the heads-up re: director's cut and other differences between the versions. Very helpful. -- And thanks for the enthusiastic recommendation. I'd read a review at KoreanFilm (dot) org last fall. This afternoon I came across Thunderbolt's comments in the Thundie's Prattle blog that spurred me to dig out my watch list and search again.

Thanks so much for your help. I figured that there had to be at least a few Beanies who could point me in the right direction. Your reply was so quick I just about got whiplash (although I didn't see it until much later).

Such communal helpfulness is one of the hallmarks of DramaBeans and its habitues that I cherish the most. ;-)

Lately I've been watching older films and dramas (from the Oughties and later), such as DAMO. Locating subtitles for older shows is sometimes quite challenging. Thanks again for giving me a hand. ;-)

And thanks again, tipsymocha, for putting that bee in my bonnet / bug in my ear. ;-)

I will never forget Ruler of Your Own World. Wonderful show with an amazing script and just as amazing cast! Left a huge impression on me.

It's such a great human drama. When I see Lee Nayoung, I still think of the wide-eyed, naive girl with a wavy bob.

I agree completely. I became a fan of Kim Jae Wook because he had a small supporting role in it as wells a fan of Lee Na Young.

Excited if she does confirm! I feel old, when you mentioned Ruler of your Own World, yes that was years ago! But I still remember it as such a good drama with good music! Loved her in it! And even though Lee Dong Gun had a smaller part in it, I remember liking him back then too! Now they're all married, with children (ok, Lee Dong Gun's is on the way)...yes, I feel old!

Genuine question: Why and how do they not act for so long? I mean even if you compare to Hollywood where actors are selective of their work and sometimes don't have anything new for a few years, Korean actors can take really really long hiatuses. Is the advertising industry so lucrative in Korea?

That's very what I was thinking as well. How do they maintain their career earnings if this is their ? and butter.

Aside from the financial aspect, don't they miss acting ? They became actors because they love acting, right ?

Most of them ventures to property investment. They bought 2-3 properties and rent it out to agency to take care of it.
