Yoo Seung-ho becomes Ruler–Master of the Mask in order to live

Amongst the early summer crop of dramas, I’ve been keeping my eye out for MBC’s Wednesday-Thursday sageuk Ruler—Master of the Mask because it stars my dream pairing of Yoo Seung-ho (Remember—Son’s War) and Kim So-hyun (The Lonely Shining Goblin). The most recently released teaser gives us delicious glimpses of Yoo Seung-ho’s emotive acting as he portrays a crown prince who must keep his mask on in order to live.

This historical drama is set during the Joseon dynasty when a corrupt organization called the Pyunsoohwe has gained power in the government. It’ll be a story containing both thrilling elements of love and war, about how the crown prince, played by Yoo Seung-ho, fights to wrest control back from this powerful group. Heo Joon-ho (Beautiful Mind) plays the leader of the Pyunsoohwe, who is also the grandfather of Yoon So-hee (Memory), who betrays her family for her love of the prince.

On the other hand, Kim So-hyun plays a character who is seeking revenge on behalf of her family against the prince and tragically falls in love with him in the process. L (She’s So Lovable) is set to play the prince’s double, who is extremely intelligent and shrewd but with very base commoner roots.

The teaser features Yoo Seung-ho in all his regalness, displaying his famous eye-acting (aka the ability to emote with just the eyes). In a heated desperate discussion, the prince asks his father: “If I stop wearing this mask, will people die again?” Interspersed in their conversation is a memory with Yoo Seung-ho being targeted by an arrow as Kim So-hyun in shock is being dragged away. The copy reads: “The crown prince who became the ruler of the mask in order to live, Yi Sun.”

In the voiceover, the king’s fierce protectiveness of his son comes out when he says, “This was the only way I could save you from death,” as he urges his son to become stronger. Meanwhile, Heo Joon-ho looks to be lounging, but has eyes that are watchful like a hawk. Then Yoo Seung-ho shouts at his father with tear-filled eyes, “I never asked to be the crown prince!” Ooh chills!

Ruler—Master of the Mask will begin airing May 10 on MBC after Radiant Office finishes its run.

YSH & KSH are killing it with their emotive acting in these teasers!

Also, HJH also super scary as the big bad. This drama better not fail the awesomeness of this cast!

Intense, Dark.. & some blood.
I need to commend Yoo Seung Ho's voice & acting. His delivery is tensive & very emotive which fits to how the teaser is edited. I got carried away that I didn't noticed I'm holding my breath while watching. Heol!

I'm getting so hyped & I still have 1 month to contain it.. *cries*
I can't wait for a preview of Yoo Seung Ho sharing the screen with Kim So Hyun. I know the chemistry is there but I need to have a glimpse of it. I also wanted to see a preview involving the 2 others (L & So hee) because i'm interested with their characters and I'm itching to have a peek on how they'll execute it.

Please tell me that he is not playing the same Yi Seon who eventually becomes known as Sado? Cause we all know how that story ended. I want to be excited but if it's the same person, that does put a damper on my excitement.

hi, this is the same question i unlurk to ask.
who is Yi Seon? according to history, as u can also check wiki which is the fastest way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeongjo_of_Joseon
Yi Seon as King Yeongjo's son will be sentenced to die in the Rice Box without ever becoming even one single day of King. according to the many writer-out, YSH's role will become King in the future, with the help of KSH's GaEun, and become a good ruler.
and you can see L (the Kpop idol) who played as the smart witty decoy of prince, has some shorts wearing King Robe (red instead of crown prince's blue). which means the character L decoy as is a king.
but Sado never become king, and the crown later pass on to Sado's son when he grew up, when the granddad Yeongjo(Korea-Yeongjo-King of Joseon-c1.jpg Yi Geum) reached old age. Sado's son is King Jeongjo(Yi San)
so, does anyone know WHICH PRINCE IN REAL HISTORY will YSH's character Yi Seon be?
it's true Sado is called Yi Seon, Crown Prince Sado . but he was not mentioned as will be dying at the end of drama, in fact the death of Sado and the method of the sentenced of death is what made Sado famous.
if Ysh is Sado, it is NOT possible for MBC not to mention his death method to draw fans.

Words can't explain how excited I am over this drama right from the moment it got announced. The story gets to me already but having YSH and KSH is basically everything a sageuk can ever need. I desperately want it to be as amazing as Princess' Man. But even if it isn't, just seeing two talented young actors play each other out is already the biggest treat of the year.

I can't wait for the love story, the anger and angst, and mostly the intensity of their chemistry. May 10 feels like centuries later!!

I think it will be! YSH and KSH sound like they'll have good chemistry. And, based on the trailer, YSH's character will be much more interesting (and complicated) than the ones he's played before.

I pray hard it'll happen. YSH is quite underrated and less popular than his peers. He deserves to get attention, to be popular as much as them. He is the best young actor under 25 IMHO.
I also feel his character will be complicated, his acting will even be better. I can't wait for May 10 !! KSH and YSH is a dream pairing *.* <3
