Seo Kang-joon offered role as swindler robot in KBS’s political drama

Originally, Seo Kang-joon (Entourage) had signed on to be one of the leads in webtoon adaptation From A Distance, A Green Spring, but that drama was scrapped (or at least indefinitely postponed) by KBS in favor of airing Third-Rate My Way and Sang-shik and Nara during its May timeslot openings. So it looks like Seo Kang-joon is back on the market, and he’s currently being courted to play a robot for the new drama Are You a Human Too.

There aren’t too many details yet on the actual storyline of the drama, but the character Seo Kang-joon has been offered is an emotional AI being, model name SwindlerGod-III. Created with superior looks and programmed to make aegyo mistakes, SwindlerGod-III is the perfect package. He’s supposed to be involved in a larger political power struggle amongst the chaebol class of Korea, in a large-scale con.

While Are You A Human Too seems more centered around class warfare set in a futuristic society, the moment I saw the description “handsome robot who understands emotions,” I was taken back to memories of J-dorama Zettai Kareshi, or Absolute Boyfriend. At its surface, it was a rom-com about a romantic sex android, but digging a little deeper, I felt like it was a thoughtful story about what it means to love, connect with others, and have real human relationships. If this upcoming KBS drama is able to portray the dilemma of free agency and societal norms in a meaningful way, I think it could be an interesting watch.

The drama is currently in the middle of casting the rest of its characters, and will begin filming sometime in late spring or early summer.

I dig storylines like this one so I'm hoping he gets it. Seo Kangjoon, pull through my man. I don't want you stuck in the dungeon that the-drama-that-must-not-be-named pushed you into!!! You are a great actor but the projects that you choose...not so great.

His character in that one drama got nominated on Dramabeans as the worst character of year. No actor deserves this kind of role

Entourage? That character deserves bashing from every corner.

I wouldn't call him a great actor but he has the X-factor for me. He has more charm on screen than say, NJH. So, yes. I would like him to hit it big and get memorable roles.

Definitely, he's a decent actor imo (I haven't watch Entourage tho), but some of his projects are questionable, I hope he gets it right this time, I like his performance in CITT and WHTMF

For those who are interested, I got this from Kkul-Jaem.
"The drama is produced by KBS Media (the same production team behind Moonlight Drawn By Clouds'), directed by Cha Young Hoon PD (Baek Hee Has Returned) and written by Jo Jung Joo (The Princess' Man)"

I like the witer and I LOVED the production team behind Moonlight, plus this role shouldn't ask for some great display of acting from its lead, so I am optimistic that it would be at least watchable

Well isn't that impressive... Moonlight Drawn By Clouds was a good watch for me. The Princess' Man holds a special place in my heart. It seriously is one of the best dramas to ever exist! I am thoroughly excited for this now. lol

The reverse/male Lolita, concept.

The thing is if this was a female idol or female actress, the level of backlash would be exponential. But per usual, "oppas" in K-entertainment get away with many things.

A female actress getting roles like Seo Kang Joon gets, despite all the murmurings, would not be able to live down a sponsor rumor (NT- not accusing him of having one). But he just keeps getting roles, even as some of his output are not well received.

i'm just taking a wild guess but i think that person may be referring to the socks + short pants + kind of student-ish shirt combo? in the US, that kind of sock style combined with shorts/short pants is something you might see on a kid, i think. i don't even know. if i'm right, then gbagan just doesn't know that that's a trend for korean men atm (and i think east asian men in general do that short pants + visible sock thing but idk). not seeing any sort of "male lolita" thing anywhere else though O.o

Wait, what?

If it were a reverse Lolita concept, that would imply that they're making him out to be a very young boy. I would think that if they were going to do that, he'd be in a school uniform, not a suit. He does look young, but he's only 23. (Oh, god. Did I really just say that? Excuse me while I go yell at some kids to get off my lawn.)

I was referring more to the fact that it looks like he's sitting in a squeaky cloud of aluminum foil. Also, those socks. Is this the new trend instead of no socks?

Ha! When I read the description I automatically though of Zettai Kareshi also.

I can definitely see Seo Kang-joon as an AI because he is definitely too handsome to be human.

I saw someone put his picture and Lee Sung Kyung together, they look great visually. Maybe can cast LSK as his partner? Honestly I dont find him too handsome, or maybe his look is not attrractive in my eyes. When I first saw him with his group members years ago in their webdrama with Kim So eun, the one caught my attention were Tae Hwan and Tae Oh.

I remember the special drama which has Lee Sang Yub as a robot, which I like it.

Ikr. Fingers crossed that they pull them off. Sci-fi is a pretty zero-sum genre. It's either done exceptionally well or becomes a horrendous mess. I'm hoping for the former in all these dramas :)

Interesting premise though for me, the movie that came to mind was Indian movie, Ra One starring Sha Rhuk Khan and my love, Kareena Kapoor ( I hope I'm spelling that right). Nice movie it was, too bad it flopped.

I haven't watched Bollywood in a while but I don't think SRK's movies have no story. Most may be about love( there are some not about love) but they DO have story, even if the story is about love.

Devdas: I didn't like the end but I rewatch it for the music. My favourites are the ones song by the brothel performer. I don't know the name of the actress.

....I was gonna make a list but I realized you probably must have already watched most of them( and I'm suddenly coming up short) lol.

You are probably right.. What I meant to say is not that it has not story, but maybe more on romance story..But most of Bollywood movies I watched are all SRK's, and maybe some others Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. Kabhi Kushi for eg still among my fav.

0

Woah!! I didn't expect to see SRK's name mentioned in this thread at all!! Ra One did come to my mind, but that was purely gaming- world character. If anything, south Indian movie 'Robot' would come close to this. The robot 'Chitti' was made by a scientist- I don't even remember that movie though.

That aside, I am a huge SRK fan and would watch anything with him in it.. Ra One was not brilliant y any standards, but i did enjoy it.

I did watch Robot( with copious amounts of fastforwarding). Am aware that Ra One was a little cheesy but Robot takes the cake, at least Ra One has the excuse of being set in a world where game characters come to life while Robot was supposed to be a SciFi about AI and you know such genres need a little realism to ground them. Robot has none.

Oh well, at least I enjoyed the pretty supplied by Aishwarya and the climax with the clones formation and deformation was awesome.

Robot man Kang Joon makes sense to me especially since in real life he has a dazed expression which he can work into his mistakes. I still think he's a good actor so I'm holding out hope that Entourage was just a horrible mistake bc tbh I hardly liked anyone and thought did a particularly outstanding job.

Is this a lead role? I certainly hope not. This guy can barely act. He sucked in Cunning Single Lady and was terrible in Entourage. They should, maybe, stop trying to make him happen through sheer force.

I don't know why people are so negative about Entourage. It's absolutely better than many feel-good shallow romance dramas.

And I don't understand why in this website Goblin was appreciated instead. That was probably one of the worst kdrama productions ever. It has a story which was too cliche & cheesy, bad sound editing and too many recycled and flashback scenes. The only attraction was popular casts. Wven then it would have been good if the two males leads were at least more creative in portraying their characters and not just plainly acting out. Among the lead character, only Eun Tak has substance.

Eun Tak has substance, because It's Kim Go Eun. Despite everyone complained about her cutesy act, she is showing much depth in acting compare to the three leads, but It's not because Kim Eun Seok is smart writing the female lead lol

Entourage is terrible.

And I gave up on Goblin in the second episode because I found it boring. I'm not interested in seeing a romance between a high schooler and centuries old man either.

And to keep this on-topic, Seo Kang-joon is a poor actor. I'm sure he only has fans due to his looks, because it sure as hell can't be because of his ability.

But... I'm become his fan after watching his acting in citt tho, ok his acting is still limited, but what makes me staying as his fan is bc i can see him growing as an actor, and I know it's not easy to improve your acting just by one and two dramas, not to mention he also has pretty face.. :)

Even though it has left a hole in my heart that is yet to be filled, he was really good in CITT. That drama had one of the best casting I've ever seen! Or the director knew how to draw out what she wanted from the actors. Everyone one performed they role they were called(lol) to do, even if you didn't necessarily agree with the interpretation.

So, I look forward to seeing him in a drama that doesn't crash.

Agree 100% with what you said. I may never forgive CITT for how they derailed what was set to be one of my favourite dramas (*shakes fist at the sky while forever cursing the production team*), but there's no denying that the casting was excellent; like LSK's interpretation of Baek In-ha which was off-putting at first but which I grew to like in the end.

If this new drama is done well, maybe I'll finally be able to let go of that slight irrational resentment towards SKJ for In-ho's hijacking of CITT in the last few episodes. It's a shame because he was actually quite good as In-ho, I'm still just bitter over what happened.

I sometimes rewatched CITT but only some parts. I didnt amazed with SKJ like many others, but since I have watched him prior to CITT, this drama was probably the only drama he did the acting. But he is not the only bad actor who keeps getting lead role in kdrama, so what to do. Not that he is to be blamed.
As long as he just doing the roles within his limitation, I think at least he will be serviceable.

lol, when CITT happened, it legit felt like heartbreak from a real breakup. At least you had the energy to shaken your fist, I just felt weakened and defeated. I still don't know what it was about Cheese In The Trap that made fall head over heals for it, when I didn't know a single person except PHJ( who I want very familiar with).

I didn't hate SKJ for the screen time, it made me even more angry the production for screwing everything up.

lmao the people who are calling Seo Kang Joon’s acting skills as robot level or his acting being bad in Entourage have definitely not seen the drama.

That drama had script problems and was too far from the typical Kdramas to be even classified a Kdrama at all which is why it didn’t do well. The plot or character not being developed properly is not the fault of the actors.
