Yoon Kyun-sang’s sorrowful tears in Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People teaser

The first teaser for MBC’s anticipated sageuk Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People, starring Yoon Kyun-sang (Doctors), has been released. Written by Hwang Jin-young (King’s Daughter Soo Baek-hyang) and directed by Kim Jin-man (Kill Me, Heal Me), this upcoming drama retells the legend of the righteous thief Hong Gil-dong as a hero who fought against injustices and helped the people rise above oppression.

During the bloodiest time of the Joseon dynasty, a boy named Hong Gil-dong is born the illegitimate son of a slave. A slight twist on the original tale, the father, played by Kim Sang-joong (Jingbirok, Bad Guys), is shown as the slave instead of the mother. Not wanting to confer his lowly status onto his son, he does everything he can to elevate his social class.

The thirty-second teaser gives us a glimpse of Hong Gil-dong’s difficult childhood and his father who warns him of the unfair discrimination against baseborn people. Then in a short scene, the father holds the crying boy down while wielding a wooden bat, as if to strike him, while he says “never tell anyone this secret.” (Do they exchange identities for ones of noble birth?)

Despite Hong Gil-dong’s humble origins, or perhaps because of them, he becomes a champion of the people. The despotic tyrant-king Yeonsangun, played by Kim Ji-suk (Oh Hae-young Again), is featured in the teaser with a crazed glint in his eye as he laughs. A short clip is shown of Honey Lee (Come Back Ajusshi), dancing in an outside courtyard; she plays the femme fatale and Hong Gil-dong’s first love who goes from being a gisaeng to the king’s concubine. In addition, Chae Soo-bin (Moonlight Drawn By Clouds), who plays the petite but courageous widow who becomes the hero’s final love, stands and smiles in the sunlight for the teaser. In the last voiceover, someone asks Hong Gil-dong if they’re done now, but he replies: “No, this is only the beginning.”

The first episode of MBC’s Monday-Tuesday drama Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People airs on January 30.

As long as it doesn't do as badly as Night Light, I think MBC will be ok.

This drama will go against Hwarang and Defendant. I'll be happy if this drama can at least achieve 7%-8%.

please, drama gods, let this be good and let it do well. And let the heroine not be reduced to some damsel in distress or sageuk Candy.

That's my biggest fear, that they'd make her some plucky, idealistic and ignorant( was combo) candy.

It is difficult to uglify Im Siwon. Terrible wigs must be the only way.

"the illegitimate son of a slave"?? Son of a slave was son of a slave. Baseborn, period. Did it matter if he was legitimate or il?

Probably because so many MBC dramas last year tanked.. under 10% ratings, they can't afford good wigs and costumes for sageuk (since sageuk generally has expensive budget).

This doesn't look as good as I hoped it would. But on the other hand 30 seconds aren't enough to judge, so I just wait for more teasers and then the highlight-reel.

I'm pissed that Kim Ji Suk is either always the second male lead or plays villain. Hasn't he paid his dues? It's not that he's a fantastic actor but there are tons of actors who got leads roles with lesser talents. Somehow, I don't think this drama will do well, the leads are just not compelling enough.

Except Yoon Kyun Sang was really compelling in his last saeguk, or does anyone not remember Musaaaa Mu Hyul. Just please, MBC, give him a better mane.

I did watch dragons but i think he's still not leading man material YET. Byun Yo-Han would have been a better leading man.

The main leads are not that strong when it comes to sageuk, but here we have very solid second leads and supporting cast who can steal the scenes. Honestly i will watch any drama with Kim Ji Suk, Honey Lee and our favourite veteran actor Kim Sang Joong ahjusshi. I will wish the main lead to be someone like Kang Ha na who really left a very good impression on sageuk but i am willing to give another chance for CSB to prove me wrong. (i like her enough in modern drama btw).

He has this strong features, that makes him look like more of a villain or a rich character than a poor pitiful main character.. he would fit on spoiled chaebol brats.. which he does play. But i dont think he would his face would fit this character, and he does have a face that fits yeosangun.. we shouldnt really underestimate villain roles.. a lot of villain roles a more memorable and needs more skill than playing goody two shoes protagonists.. villains tend to be more layered character.. they are often written better than protagonists.

Actually I find the trailer quite intriguing. There wasn't much material of the main story in the trailer because the adult actory just started filming. But the prestory with Kim Sang-joong as the dad who is driven into taking extreme actions to protect his family seems quite promising to me. Especially because koreans always do family tragedy and family love well! ;)
When they said, they wanted to make a story about the real life Hong Gil-dong and then the description turned into a very weird mixture of the Hong Gil-dong classical novel, the two things we know about the 15.th-16.th century Hong Gil-dong and Im Kkeokjeong's story I felt a little bit uneasy about it. But now the uneasyness is slowly starting to be replaced by curiosity.

Also the look is more novel sageukish than manhwa sageukish. Personally I enjoy novel sageukish more. Manhwa sageukish can be a quite enjoyable feast for the eyes but lately it had a tendency in going into style over substance territory. Let's hope that this one lives up to its looks and really is a little bit more substantial!
