Moon Chae-won offered lead in tvN’s Bride of the Water God 2017

Time to cross your fingers and send up your collective fan prayers, because Moon Chae-won (Goodbye Mr. Black) has been offered the lead role in buzz project Bride of the Water God 2017, which will be written by Misaeng and Arang and the Magistrate writer Jung Yoon-jung and directed by Queen In-hyun’s Man and Nine director Kim Byung-soo.

I have to admit that I can’t quite see her pairing with Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju), who was previously offered the leading male role of Ha-baek, aka the water god. He just seems very young next to Moon, who’s always had a mature air; I like him and I like her, but I’m not sure about them together. On the upside, his casting is not yet confirmed, so there is a chance we’ll get a different pairing. And if he does end up taking the role… well, I have a lot of trust in this writer and director, so I’ll have to hope for the best and wait to see how it turns out.

In the original manhwa from which the drama is adapted, Ha-baek was the god to whom villagers offered up a young woman as human sacrifice, hoping for an end to their long drought. The original was a fantasy-historical story, but this drama version is calling itself a spinoff rather than remake and relocating the proceedings to modern-day Seoul, although it will still retain its fantasy-rom-com angle.

The character Moon is up to play is a neuropsychiatrist whose father was more driven by a love of humanity as a whole than for his family in particular, which led her to have a rather sad childhood, and has saddled her in adulthood with mounds of Dad’s debt. She worked intensely through her medical school days to put herself through school, but that just added to the debt Dad left her, and in order to pay it down sooner, she immediately opened up her own doctor’s office after becoming a specialist. No word yet on how water god Ha-baek will be modernized, but hey, we’re in the era of modern-day gods and reapers and wistful fantasy romances, so sign me up.

I’ve been dying for Moon Chae-won to make a good drama again, after sitting through the drudgery of her last, Goodbye Mr. Black. (And despite 2013’s Good Doctor being a hit, I thought her underutilized in it, compared to how wonderful she was in The Princess’s Man and Nice Guy.) I’m definitely excited to see her in the hands of a strong writer and director, and dipping her toes into the tvN pool—which, frankly, is a lot bigger than it once was, and now rivals major broadcast waters.

Bride of the Water God 2017 will be pre-produced and plans to begin filming next month, aiming for a broadcast in the latter half of the year.

Cheese on the trap the webcomic is really good even if you didnt like the drama. Noblesse, tower of god, and girls of the wild. Just some of the more popular ones out there. The webtoons are on par with some of fbe better mangas out there. Give them a try and see what you like.

Ill be honest didnt read the manhwa for the female character. The art, mythology, and the male character was what drew me in. Shes the weakest part of the story. No I didnt finish it cause most of the story is still not translated into english unfortunately.

Me too! This manhwa is one of the most beautiful manhwas out there, both in art and storyline. I find TvN's modern take on it quite interesting because I never would've been able to imagine the manhwa outside of their hanbok and rituals. The modern version of Soah as a neuropsychiatrist is so intriguing! That backstory's already got me hooked.

Curious what Habaek will be! My guess is, taking into account Do MinJoon from YWCFTS and Kim Shin from Goblin, that he will be an immensely rich CEO who listens to Eric Nam and casually studies at Harvard because he's bored.

I read it on webtoons (both the website and the app) and you have to get an account but otherwise it's free and in English and other translations with a bunch of others.

My personal favorite right now is Dr. Frost (NOT the drama ugh) and Secret Love :D

That's kind of a stretch, especially budget-wise, the water kingdom alone would cost a lot of money and most of the story took place there. Plus the costume, i'm not sure if makeup costs a lot too. But I hope they keep Mooee's tattoo. ???

I really want to see Moon Chae-won making a comback. But to be honest, I'm not sold enough with Nam Joo-hyuk. I know that once the drama airs it might be different, but still.
When the anouncement of this drama was posted, I thought I would skip this. But then, with Moon Chae-won now on the cast list, I feel the sudden dilemma. I know that my opinion doesn't matter, it's just getting difficult for me to adjust with some unmatched pairing...

Similar feelings here.

I like Moon Chae-won and want her back sooner rather than later, and in a project she can sink her teeth into. But if it's going to be with Nam Joo-hyuk, then I'd rather she pass since I really don't like the idea of that.

I want a better male lead. I actually wanted to see her in Defendant with Ji Sung, but since that's not happening, I wouldn't mind any of So Ji-sub, Lee Joon-gi, or Choi Jin-Hyuk.

I actually really like Nam Joo Hyuk after Weightlifting Fairy now, he proved a lot of people wrong BUT i feel like they could get someone else on the same level as her acting. Nam Joo Hyuk is great in those goofy funny roles but i don't think he's quite on par with her yet. If he does confirm it though i hope he proves me wrong again.

Please NJH for the love of chae won step back. Do this for her, she can't bare to have another Lee Jin Wook, you're lovely but so unmatched. Be good and work your way up like a good rising actor. Required fields are marked *

I must say, the failure of Goodbye Mr Black was mostly because of the poor writing and execution not because of Lee Jin Wook alone. Facing the strong competition also resulted a low rating. Not saying Lee Jin Wook is that great, but i dont think he and Nam Joo Hyuk shoud be put together.

I do agree Moon Chae Won needs a better partner who can be on par with her and most importantly, she should choose a project which will not underuse her. No use to be paired with great male lead if it will make her underuse, especially with her talent. She can basically carry drama on her own, and I hope she will act in female centric drama in the future.

but having a good male lead complement your acting is a big plus. imagine you act your heart out but your partner can't act to save his life, stiff like a tree in front of you, God forbid. it's much easier to act opposite partner who compliment your acting. talk about chemistry.

I do understand what you're saying, but trust me, if you read the manwha, I'm sure you will agree that NJH simply does not have the acting range to play Haebak, wheres MCW has a very wide range- she's certainly skilled enough to carry the weight of So Ah's character. We're not picking favourites here (well, some of us are) we just want this drama -which has so much precious potential, what with the writer and the director and the source material- to be the best it can possible be.

Frankly, MCW offers more to this particular drama, acting-wise, than NJH does. And besides, he just had a wonderful drama! The last thing MCW was in was... well, not. Ooh, although she did have nice chemistry with Song Jae Rim in that... *Hint* *hint*

Anyway, I've said this once and I'll say it again: Pleeeeeeeeaassee Lee Soo Hyuk!

I'm thinking tho, since they offered MCW the female lead role, has NJH declined? I like them both (actually LOVE MCW) individually but do not think they match at all. She has a very mature aura and matches older actors more whereas NJH has a legit baby face which makes him excel in younger roles (highschool/college) and opposite younger looking actresses.

Anyway, I didn't really think NJH was ready to take on a role like this anyway but if you throw in MCW into the mix, I really hope he's out and replaced by an older actor. Regardless, I will watch this drama!

This is going to be a modern drama.

Nam Joo Hyuk much too young for Moon Chae Won. Although he is a promising actor and good looking, nothing about his features speak mythical or godly. He gives a lot of boy-next-door vibes.

Lee Jun Ki would be perfect for Moon Chae Won. But if they are going for someone younger, then my vote goes to either Park Hyung Sik (he has the regal aura and the acting chop) or Kang Ha Neul.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

I initially don't mind about Hyungsik in the previous post, since I can see him playing these kind of roles well, but if the leading lady is someone like MCW, I just prefers her to be paired with someone her age or older (for a better chemistry you know), like ahem maybe somebody like Kang Dong Won (ya, you can tell me I'm deluded, but the guy literally said that he don't mind staring in a drama in that one interview hahaha)

0
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

Ya. I read that interview too. He said he is open to star in a drama and not constraining himself with movies only.

Kang Dong Won would be great but I would want Kang Ha Neul. It's high time for him to be elevated to leading man status. The man is super talented, just too bad he is a little underrated. What could be greater than to have an equally charismatic lead actress other than Moon Chae Won.

0

@Alexa but KHN is also young as much as PHS, personally someone like KDW, or like some suggested LJK, might be a better partner for her, I just want a sizzling adult chemistry hehe... yeah KHN needs his leading man status tho I get it, maybe he can surprise me, but I still prefer someone older hehe

0

@nada

Kang Ha Neul is young but he has a very matured look. That is why I think he quite fit the bills when come to pairing with a much older actress.

Lee Jun Ki and Kang Dong Won are perfect but seems like they are going for lesser known actor but a high profile actress. I agree that Park Hyung Sik would look quite young compare to MCW but I think no problem when comes to appearance if it is Kang Ha Neul. Anyway, Lee Soo Hyuk born in 1988, just a year younger than MCW and though been around for quite sometimes, still yet to be promoted to leading man status. May be he is a good candidate especially with that unique look.

Hah...we spazz a lot on the possible pairing, isn't it?

0

Oops I forgot they are making it into a modern drama. MCW is around 30 while LJK is in his early 30s.
But I like your other two choices since KHN tends to appear older (he's in his mid-twenties) and this seems like a role he can pull off.
PHS from what I saw of him does give off a regal aura, but I feel a male with a more older looking appearance or aura would fit more with MCW.

We are at the last week of month. And this plans to be filmed next month. I cant wait for a final confirmation on the casting. With the ability of the director n writer its hard not to look forward to this drama. I also zone in on the word spin off. So that means we look forward to alot of changes from the manhwa. I thk the writer wants to maintain control on plot twist so that things wont be 'expected to flow the way it did in the manhwa which almost evyone reads and knows off' so il stop complaining about them switching from historical to modern setting

The other Moon (Geunyoung) might have been a better choice, since she's more baby faced.

ikr?! If they only need mediocre acting skill (NJH is good at WFKBJ but...) they should give it to actor who has the 'look' such as yonghwa or jonghyun. At least we dont have to struggle imagining them as beautiful since they already are. Hihi.

And if only they cast jonghyun and then get gong seungyeon, my life will be complete, period.

@Catt Don't be so greedy, Jonghyun & Seungyeon already has a drama and it wil airing in february this year, and you know what Jonghyun has a new drama with Lee Yoo bi then again Jonghyun will staring Fucking FNC drama with Minhyuk, BUT Yonghwa & Jungshin didn't include in that.
And plus Jonghyun Can't act he's the worst actor of Cn blue, unlike Yonghwa, minhyuk, and jungshin wich is decent.... and Yonghwa face is more dreamy,handsome,korean,manhwa-is than the stiff Jonghyun

I'm not too keen for this pairing. She looks more like his noona than a love interest. Even if it's a noona romance, they are still not compatible. It would be great to get Lee Sung Kyung in the role, if Nam Joo Hyuk does accept the lead role. But it's just wishful thinking on my end. I doubt they will pair up again immediately after their last drama.

Yeah, LSK+NJH together in Bride of the water god could have been awesome but it's just wishful thinking on our side...
I'm not excited about this pairing either. She looks too mature for him. I hope the writer and PD team know what they are doing. I like Moon Chae Won a lot and wish her success, but I am concerned about NJH now, people would be quick in putting the blame on him if the show does not work, since it seems that almost everyone wants someone older.

Anyway, we do not have enough information in order to be sure whether this is a good idea or not... If they decide to take it, I will watch since I like both of them. :D I guess he is supposed to be older than her but youthful in appearance, so it's not really a noona romance, haha!! Who knows, maybe the writer is going to surprise us with an approach that fits to this pairing. :)

Moon Chae Won is not a bad choice for Soah, although I would love to see Kim So Hyun, Lee Taeri, or Han Yeri as Soah instead. However, the plot description with Soah being a doctor is so far off from the manhwa characterization and storyline, even if it a spin-off and set in modern times. If the only component of the drama ends up being the fantasy elements of a Habaek-esque male lead, then it's not really related to Bride of the Water God at all. It would be amazing to see the manhwa adapted into a drama or movie in its original fantasy saeguk form and stay relatively faithful to the characters and storyline as they were presented in the manhwa. Sigh.
