The fateful rainy day when the Goblin meets his bride

The newest teasers for tvN’s fantasy drama The Lonely, Shining Goblin finally have the two leads meeting onscreen. Gong Yoo (Big) stars as the mysterious goblin, described as a protector of souls, who’s always on the lookout for a human bride who can end his immortal life. In the first teaser below, he walks past Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap) in the rain and time slows as he senses something different about her. As he turns back to watch her leave, he says in voiceover, “A bride has appeared.”

The new series from hit writer Kim Eun-sook (Descended From the Sun) is about the bizarre living arrangement between a goblin and an amnesiac reaper, played by Lee Dong-wook (Bubblegum), and the goblin’s quest to end his immortality. Yoo Inna (One More Happy Ending) co-stars as Lee Dong-wook’s love interest, the owner of a chicken shop with a sunny personality. Yook Sung-jae (Village: Secret of Achiara) is a chaebol heir whose family looks after the goblin.

Kim Go-eun plays a high-schooler with the fate of a person who was supposed to die, who remains optimistic despite her difficult life. In the second teaser below, she sits with a birthday cake alone by the ocean and wishes for a part-time job and a boyfriend before blowing out the candles. As soon as she does, the goblin appears and asks, “Was it you? Were you the one to call me here?” I’m still wondering how they’re going to pull off a romance between a high school girl and a centuries-year-old god, which is a weird problem to introduce when the actress is in her twenties anyway and doesn’t need to play younger.

The teasers continue to be moody and beautiful, so I’m sure the show will be something to look at. It would be nice to also learn a little more about the characters in them, but I have a feeling we’re just going to be kept on ice until December. I just hope the show is worth the wait. If it’ll help to make a wish and blow out some candles, I’ll go get a cake.

The Lonely, Shining Goblin premieres December 2.

Y'know, in a couple of the BTS/filming videos that they recently released, her speaking voice really does sound like her character in Monster. I wasn't too fond of her overly cheery voice in the BTS vids, tbh, and was hoping it was exaggerated for the teasers, but seeing that she plays an optimistic hs girl, that could very well be true to character... darn it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an appropriate time jump!

Yeah, you probably did! She did it in like two different scenes! ?Oh please, no. You have no idea how much I'm looking forward to this drama, so if my girl ends up being annoyingly peppy, I... wouldn't... know... what... to... do... ???

I feel you! Not necessarily looking forward to the drama, but I like Kim Go Eun and it would suck to have her stuck with an annoying character or to be directed in a way that would make her come off that way.

I've noticed that a lot of actors (Kang Ha Neul from Scarlet Heart) tend to play characters that are the exact opposite of their true personality. The reason why I like that is because it gives them depth into their acting capability. Gong Yoo is mature and sweet, but plays characters that across the spectrum (Really they are just troubled...). Excited to see Kim Go Eun in this. Her CITT was okay, but at times she was just so sad! Still excited for this though.

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you! I like to see actors portraying various and different characters and roles, too. It's interesting to see their interpretation on different roles and good for them to hone and strengthen their skills. That's actually Kim Go-eun, herself, in that she's such a chameleon when it comes to her acting because she's already portrayed different characters and I think she slays. She's got such raw and natural talent–it's great.
Funny you mention Kang Ha-neul because I've never seen him BTS or even in interviews, so when I saw how giddy and bashful he was on Running Man, I was surprised, but thought he was so cute! Definitely different than his character in Misaeng and Scarlet Heart.

I saw her in Happy together, her speaking voice wasn't like her character in Monster at all. So I don't think this is how she usually acts\speaks. I'm afraid that maybe what you saw is her being in character. So you need to brace yourself for that :p.
The strange thing for me is that I saw her in Monster after seeing her in CITT. Yet I LOVED how she portrayed her character in Monster. Although it was hard to get used to the way she speaks at first, but then I totally believed her.

Maybe I'm the only one who is anticipating her being a high School student? it feels like there maybe a twist somewhere somehow!

Oh yeah, I know how she sounds irl and I loved seeing her on Happy Together! It was so cool to get to know her more. I really hope she comes on Running Man (she said it's one of her favorite shows!)–hopefully with Gong Yoo to promote Goblin!? Heck, let's have the entire cast on!
Anyways, I'm sure that's not how she sounds/act irl (even she couldn't handle the pep in her own voice in those filming vids ?), and I WAS worried that it was her in character, but was optimist that maybe she just exaggerated a bit because she was filming for another teaser, rather than an actual scene for the drama? I've seen how some teasers tend to be more silly/exaggerated/plotless in comparison to the actual show, so hey, let's hope for the best (and expect the worst!? ??)!
Saw most of her work after seeing and loving her in CITT, too! Loved her nutty, loose bolt, craziness in Monster and only saw her parts in Advocate of a Missing Body, but omg, she was so spunky and sassy in that one! I loved the very few scenes she had with Lee Seon-kyun! I wanna see them in a drama together! Heck, I wanna see Kim Go-eun act with all my favs! ???
I actually don't mind her playing a hs student, but would appreciate a significant time jump, as many has mentioned. ??

Her best work will be her movies since the film industry is where the most talented directors, writers, actors etc are at and they know how to utilize talents.

I love the early 20s -30s film actresses, the short film and indie film darlings. Kim Ok-bin, Son Ye-jin, Han Ye-ri, Park Bo-young, Ko Ah-sung, Park So-dam, Jung Yoo-mi (older), Moon Geun-young, Shim Eun-kyung, Lee Yoo-young, Kang Han-na, Chun Woo-hee etc.

It's a real treat to see them in drama land. They hardly disappoint.

I have not seen a project of Kim Go Eun so I was surprised at how much negative comments she got from k-netizens.

I hope there's some logical explanation why they decided to go with a high school senior female lead. While I don't think a young person's depth of feelings should be taken lightly, if a drama doesn't NEED a character be of certain age (considering the actress playing is older than a high school student), why not make the character older? Is it because we're already dealing with a hundreds years old Goblin so who cares how young or old the female is?

i get your discomfort re age gap, but this is slightly different from the one in MDBC.

For goblin it is the on-screen character that is portrayed as a high schooler, who will be the bride to some (immortal) adult. to like the romance you have to actively accept that its a student-adult pair.

for MDBC and Mirror of the Witch, the characters were meant to be around the same age, i.e. the under age female leads were playing people older than themselves or the male leads were actually playing people younger - what you're criticising here is the casting, but not the pairing in itself. i think Goblin's one is a little bit more problematic especially, like was mentioned in the article, kim go eun can play a proper adult anw.

@Clinton Carter
Agree, both situations are kind of distasteful. I personally couldn't get behind the romance in MDBC. At least the actress here isn't underaged. I'm really hoping that that birthday is her turning nineteen and around graduation time. And that then she will continue to randomly/accidentally summon him for some years without anything happening between them (all in first ep) until she's at least mid-twenties. If she's at least that age before something romantic develops, then all is good.

i MDBC, yes she is underage but she played underage in the limit 0f 17/old as herself and as the character,
with puppy romance with 23 years old that supposed to be 18/19 years old

so you have a character that falls in love as 17 and 18
and actor that is 17 and 23, it's not that stretch, she is not 12 with 18 years old,

but they didn't even have racy intimate, just normal date,
I even think all those criticism about the character decision should be put to rest cause we deal with 17 years old mind in the story,

goblin is weird because the romance in high schooler with immortal goblin with an actress that is 25 and 37 years old goblin actor,
why can't she be 25?

0

Haha, yeah! I also just thought of the idea that they won't be able to do anything about their romantic relationship until she's of a certain age... Idk, maybe that's just how they first met, but no actual romantic feelings until years later? I really thought this, but I'm hoping for something good.

0

i never said it was game, i was trying to suggest to you that the two situations are different and therefore people may be able to get behind one and not the other, depending on whether they think on-screen fictional imbalance is more weird given that age is something that can be constructed by the writer, OR they think the actor's actual age is more important.

This was because you insisted on painting people who complained as 'hypocritical'. but i see clearly you were just expressing your opinion and don't really care to see the difference, so it's alright.

0

Required fields are marked *

it is kinda hypocritical, though. situations are different but it's still romance or simulated romance between a teenager and an adult in both situations.

0

@stedens (i can't reply to your comment!) i personally think that it is okay for underaged actors to play characters older than themselves. in all instances, i do think underage actors were casted because they are incredibly talented and leading lady/guy material with depth to portray older characters, not because of some perverse need to get some young things on screen. so long as they consent to it, its just a job, and i don't believe there is a 'taking advantage' of him/her. and for a normal person watching TV, who usually won't search up an actor's age, there is little consciousness of age when watching the drama.

simulated romance, on the other hand, seems to be encouraging the trend because people watching right off the bat, clueless about the actor's age, are expected to ship the romance on an understanding of the age.

From that perspective, you could see from my perspective why i suggest that it is not necessarily hypocritical. i think the main difference is that i think there should be an actor-character disassociation.

0

But, if underage actresses themselves don't object being cast against adult (however so many years older) actors, I mean, do we have any say in it? Its not like they are being forced to do this, right? It all comes down to their decision, They probably think this as part of a profession.

0

Required fields are marked *

I honestly don't think most actors (particularly the underage ones) get to have a say in what dramas they're cast in. Sure, maybe top stars and those with really lenient agencies would get to choose their roles. (But I may be wrong, does anyone know whether actors have complete liberty to choose their own projects?)

But yeah, I agree with your last sentence, they probably have to suck it up even if they feel uncomfortable and view it with a professional mindset.

0

Required fields are marked *

They actually do. Kim Yoo-jung picked her role in Moonlight. The character that she played is supposed to be a teenager. Park Bo-gum was cast later as the lead guy.
She has been acting since she was 4yrs old (almost 50 drama and movies combined). She is very professional. Acting is acting and nothing more. Her mother and older sister were at the set 24/7. That's mean that she made the choice with her parents approval and support.

Most of these young girls are playing the proper age for their characters. It's the male that are too old to play teen age characters.

The age gap is uncomfortable but at the end of the day it's just a job for these actors.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

i think its usually the case that they get to choose projects - all the ones we know casted in uneven age pairings are pretty experienced child actresses who have stared in many shows/movies. i honestly think they can say no and i'm pretty sure underage actresses also have their parents to protect them.

the problem i have is if they cast a much older guy actor after that and the actresses can't really back out.

which is why i was fine with kim sae ron who probably saw an opp to be leading lady and took it for Mirror of the Witch (yoon shi-yoon was cast first) as well as kim yoo-jung who was casted after pbg in MDBC, this being her first leading lady role (secret door doesn't count), but i was more uncomfortable for kim so-hyun for bring it on, ghost.

You can't expect minors to have a nuanced and full understanding of those dynamics, nor the power to decide these things. They're in a business, their agents unfortunately could care more about money than their well-being. (Not saying this is the case for them but plenty of young stars have been used for money and suffered for it)

Isn't the difference obvious? In MDBY in young actress played in adult. It's not like she participated in R-rated material. Here on the other hand an adult woman plays a high schooler, where the character might be put in adult situations with a grown man. No matter how off-screen. That makes people uncomfortable.

0

Actually, there was already a drama where viewers were clamoring for a middle-aged adult to be with a high schooler. Or were at least supportive of it.

Funny thing was that no one really seemed to object to angry mom portraying a similar issue. but oh, ji soo is so cute!

Bleh, if you want to talk about hypocrisy, you should start with that.

Fwiw, I'm disturbed by all the kid shenanigans, from Kim go eun portraying a high school bride and adults clamoring for a high schooler to be with a mother of a high schooler to the plethora of non-adult actors being cast as romantic interests to adult actors such as Kim sae Ron, Kim yoo jung, kim so hyun, and yeo Jin gu. Oh wait, there's another example of hypocrisy except it's OK because "I love yeo Jin gu and his love interest looks young!"

Really, either you're against exploiting non-legal teenagers as love interests whether they're male or female or you should be fine with all of them.

It's possible that 'Entourage', which premiered this week, is seen as the follow-up Fri-Sat show even though it's in a different timeslot. Since 'Cinderella and the Four Knights' aired, tvN seems to be staggering dramas between the 8PM and 11PM timeslots Fri-Sat. 'Cinderella and the Four Knights' (11PM) premiered a couple of weeks before 'The Good Wife' ended. 'The K2' (8PM) premiered a week before 'Cinderella and the Four Knights' ended. Now it looks like 'Goblin' (8PM) will premiere a week before 'Entourage' (11PM) airs its final week of episodes. The new dramas seem to be getting a headstart with their premieres while tvN has a captive audience from the dramas about to end. tvN is possibly testing the waters by airing dramas with more adult content in the Fri-Sat 11 PM timeslot and possibly even testing whether they can air two shows the same night and still have decent ratings for both.

I’m still wondering how they’re going to pull off a romance between a high school girl and a centuries-year-old god, which is a weird problem to introduce when the actress is in her twenties anyway and doesn’t need to play younger.

Oh man, even if we weren't dealing with a centuries-year-old god and a higher schooler, it'd still be a thirty-something year old man and a high schooler. Ugh, why'd she have to be a high schooler? I'm hoping that she's at least a senior in high school.

Guess they wanted us to know that he's super lonely as well as blazin?

Pardon if I come across as scathing. Sometimes drama titles can just sound sooooo silly when translated to english.
