OCN develops new crime drama The Voice

 photo Voice.jpg

Anyone suffering from Police Unit 38 withdrawal symptoms? I know I’ve been missing my weekly dose of the comedic con artist tax squad. Not to fear! OCN has recently announced its plans to launch another crime drama to fill the lovable Ma Dong-seok-shaped empty space in our hearts and our weekends. The Voice, which primarily takes place at a 112 call center, will take over the time slot of Police Unit 38 sometime later this year or starting early next year.

I live in Amurrica, so I was taught that in any potentially dangerous situation, I should call 911. In Korea, schoolchildren are taught two numbers: 119 and 112. The former is used for medical and fire emergencies, and the latter is the direct line to the police. There’s a critical time window in criminal investigations called the “golden time,” when the chance for recovery of forensic evidence is the highest, and one call to 112 starts the chain of response. In The Voice, a policewoman and policeman working at the same 112 call center discover the vital importance of their jobs as they become caught up in a chase to find the trail of a serial murderer who is killing their families.

In the past few years, cable channel OCN has been home to some truly great cop dramas from the latest, Police Unit 38, to one of my favorites, Bad Guys, to cult dramas TEN and Vampire Prosecutor. One thing that all these crime-centered TV shows lacked was a strong female main lead. With the recent popularity of Mrs. Cop and Signal starring badass female detectives from its competitors, SBS and tvN respectively, it’s no surprise that OCN wants to capitalize on this wave. So they’ve announced tentatively that they plan on making The Voice a police drama told from a predominantly female-centric perspective.

Casting has yet to begin, and the script is still in the development phase, but it seems like The Voice is still getting a lot of press attention because of the popularity of its predecessor Police Unit 38 and its unique approach to the crime procedural. OCN has stated that it hopes to air the new drama sometime soon, either late 2016 or early 2017.

Don't cast Kim Hyesoo because I need her free for Signal Season 2!

Better yet, just get the whole Age of Youth gang because that fight scene with Jong Yeol was A+++++

LSB would make a kick-arse cop, but depending on how the role plays out, probably too young for the lead female cop.

Would make a great second female lead as the young or rookie cop.

Han Ye-ri would be perfect; yes, she would be perfect.

I feel more like a hole with remnants of a person.
it is not nearly as goood as season 2 would be of 38, but hey, female centered. guess they know how to catch current drama fans.

Saw the headline and thought it would be a crime-riddled singing competition.

I'm excited that it will be led by ladies -- I agree with mary, bring back the PU38 gals!

Omgyessss more OCN crime dramas!
Who's the writer?!
More strong female leads please!

I liked Lee Sun Bin from PU38, but she didn't have that big of a role. And I still remember the only female lead in Bad Guys was terrible.

For a supporting role, LSB had a decent amount of screen time (more than any of the other female characters) - and definitely enough to make an impression.

...Am I the only one who, after seeing the title of this post, thought that the cast of PU38 were going to be part of the singing competition with that exact name? Man, now I wish that were true, Ma Dong Seok would be incredible in it...

But I agree, this drama is making me curious too! Hopefully it starts off well.

Me.

But AoY is helping to nurse the withdrawal (but only 1 more week of that).

Guess - it'll then be time to marathon "Bad Guys."

Bad Guys is my all time favourite! the hired assassin, the mob boss, the psychopath genius murderer, the washed up detective, and idealistic inspector, plus twisted evil prosecutor - all these flawed and gritty characters - and the highly stylized fight scenes! Plus, the transitional cases throughout were sufficiently gripping to keep me going back for more. Only Hidden identity (TvN) comes close to the fight scenes to Bad Guys in recent dramaland. And the sub-plots were not too bad either. Ten and Vampire Prosecutor did not have enough interesting characters to keep me glued altho they did excellently on other fronts.

Me too... I'm having withdrawal for Bad Guys. I wonder if they will be able to make the second season for it.

But I'm excited for a female-centric crime drama..

Good that the premise is interesting. But i prefer comedic elements with thrill and mystery aka sth like PU 38. I guess I watched ep 17 yesterday so I'm missing the show a lot. Btw wasn't PY 38 pre produced completely? There was a scene where SIG was leaving shoot at 3 am and had to arrive early tomorrow. Does that mean that even pre production is bringing no changes in the working environment if the working schedule is as hectic as earlier?

YES to everyone's suggestions above -- Lee Bo Young, Kim So Yeon or Ha Ji Won! And yes to Lee Sunbin as the second/rookie cop, as well! Would it be too much to ask that all four be casted as female cops in this drama? It would, wouldn't it? LOL.

Got so excited when I saw those 2 posters side by side! And now our prayers have been answered!!!

Yes to all the names mentioned - esp the PU38 gals (LSB in particular). I don't care if it's a cameo or cross dresser or a doppelganger!

I wonder if it'll be a gritty or comedic crime show? If the latter, can we please have a cameo by Hwang Seok-jeong?

expecting also a new Oh Snap! post with Seo in guks´ new photo shoot. it is too much! he has pics on Insta. warning: you cant handle it coherently. but maybe it will help ease the withdrawal syndrom from 38 squad until this new drama happens.

I'm about halfway through "Signal" & have "38" lined up for afterward - here's hoping that the new one will be just as good. :)
