My Sassy Girl swaps out lead actress, courts Oh Yeon-seo to star

Wait, they’re changing My Sassy Girl’s sassy girl? Then what the heck was the point of that massive open audition with 1,800 hopefuls, plus reality survival show with top ten finalists, all in an effort to pick a fresh face? Well I guess it all seems moot now, because the finalist who was cast in the lead role — newbie actress Kim Joo-hyun — has stepped down to take on a secondary role in the drama, and an offer is now out to Oh Yeon-seo (Come Back, Ajusshi) to headline in her place.

The new SBS drama stars Joo-won (Yong-pal) in a sageuk remake of the classic rom-com movie My Sassy Girl, which will take the basic premise — rude, sassy girl meets nice, put-upon boy — and transplants the story to the Joseon era. I don’t even think of it as My Sassy Girl, to be honest, because Joo-won’s character is described as a cold city man, which is the total opposite of the beta male hero in the original.

It’s unclear why Kim Joo-hyun stepped down from the role voluntarily when she competed against so many to get the coveted lead character, but there’s some speculation about the pressure of a leading role on an inexperienced actress; on the flip side, there’s also speculation about SBS pressuring the production to re-cast with a bigger star. The latter seems much likelier to me, though if that’s true, I have no idea why producers bothered going through with the open auditions if they weren’t going to stick to their guns. I could’ve told you on day one that the network would want a star. When has a network ever NOT wanted a star?

That said, I don’t actually mind the casting change at all, since I like Oh Yeon-seo and know she’s got the comedic chops to be outrageously gross and sassy. She was hilarious as a gangster trapped in a woman’s body in Come Back, Ajusshi, and seems like a perfect fit to be the next sassy girl. She’s been offered the role of a bright, quirky princess who’s a nuisance to the royal family. Meanwhile, Kim Joo-hyun will take the role of the princess’s rival in love, the only daughter to the most powerful minister in the king’s court. She’ll have a one-sided crush on the hero.

The heroine is described as beautiful and innocent on the outside, but she’s actually a constant troublemaker who hops the palace walls as she pleases, gets drunk, and stays out all night. She hates empty formalities and vanity, and isn’t afraid to use the swear words she hears in the marketplace to argue her case. The princess happily enjoys eating things like chicken feet and live octopus, and loves her brother dearly. She sounds refreshing, just like a Joseon sassy girl ought to.

My Sassy Girl will be 100% pre-produced and plans to air simultaneously in Korea, China, and Japan sometime next year. It begins shooting in September.

As the a\newbie actress is still getting a supporting role, she should still be happy, after all she getting a break and without the pressure of being the lead.

I really really like Oh Yeon-seo and she amaze me on her acting skills on Come Back Mister and I don't mind if she will play the Joseon-era My Sassy Girl, but it makes me sad that it seems like it kinda put her in the bad light coz she's getting the offer after suddenly Kim Joo-hyun dropped off the role.

This is noise marketing at its very worse. I definitely see why they went through the audition - it wasn't to get a female lead, it was to get attention and that's just dirty play right there. Now that they already have an unknown face, SBS decides they prefer someone more popular. If the actress voluntarily stepped down (I so doubt that) then that's fine, but if not, dick move SBS. Dick-effin-move.

I don't get it...then what's the point of the open auditions? Why didn't they offer to the other top 3 finalists instead? (Although I think Oh Yeon Seo is sassy enough to be The Sassy Girl)

Just to clarify, did she drop out or was she dropped out? The conflicting reports are making me confused.

Not complaining about OYS at all, I was not originally wanted to watch this but if OYS is in, I will watch. She is perfect for the role. The only thing matters is, they should not be any audition from the very beginning, They should just cast OYS straight away.

This sounds like a hot mess. I've recently been burnt by stupid decisions from greedy networks (yes KBS I'm looking at you), so I'm biased against networks now. But seriously it sounds like someone high up panicked that maybe they wouldn't have a runaway hit and then arm twisted everyone into changing the lead actress. Sometimes I wish networks would butt out regarding the creative process and allow the PDs and writers to do their jobs in peace.

Those were my thoughts exactly! Why bother with the audition process if you are going to end up casting a star instead?! Now you're just gonna get bad publicity. So much for the audition as a marketing stunt now. My feelings have been cheated. I loved Kim Joo Hyun in Modern Farmer and I was so excited to see her get a lead role. Sigh, nasty side of showbiz right there. Well i hope she rocks everyone's socks off in her secondary role and make them regret not giving her the lead role.

I think Oh Yeon-seo is a pretty good choice for the role. I didn't like any of the finalists. They all look like they lack star quality (or lack audience affinity) so I'm happy that they got Oh Yeon-seo instead.

With regard to the auditioning, I think they've been too open about the process. Instead of making it a reality show/survival like format, they should have just kept it low profile. Like a REAL audition.

"air simultaneously in Korea, China, and Japan" For a site with news about dramas you're not very informed about things. Japan avoids airing kdramas in general and paid very little for the huge DOTS, for this drama to air there they will have to sell it for pretty much nothing and I don't know if they're willing to lose money. And China just banned about 99% of korean entertainment, so this drama ain't airing there anytime soon.

China didn't ban anything.....the show has to submitted to the Chinese authority so that they can review the content.... censor if necessary 6 months prior to air date....DOTS is pre-produced so aired simultaneously in China and Korea.....same goes for Scarlet Heart Rheyo

In one way or another, China censors just about everything, and lately has been getting worse. @Gerry

The competition between w and uf is inevitable as both are in the same wed-thu slot and both are heavily marketed, has star writers, young flower boy leads.

Doctors comes out as a sleeper hit success with none of those qualities above. And the cameos have been there from episode 1(gangster boss-lee ki woo) if you have actually watched it. Its more like,a new patient and his/her side story for the following week with the cameos. And the drama is already more than half-way through. So it isn't necessarily to do with the ratings but to continue the plot.

Just my two cents.

Glad you mentioned about the use of cameos in this drama even from the very first episode! I think some just couldn't accept Doctors popularity to the Korean audience, and find fault.....maybe they should analyze what went wrong with their drama of choice that it has not captured this audience, stop comparing to Doctors, a show that even PSH and her agency thought would flop. I think the audience was intrigued with PSH character from the get go, a totally different role for her! The chemistry between the main leads also was a surprise.....the show has what we call The IT factor.

Post-DotS syndrome, actually. Every channel is hoping for the next big hit and nobody wants to be completely slaughtered (BF is, in fact, the latest victim and UF is on the verge of being slaughtered).

I highly doubt she "voluntarily" stepped down from a lead role she worked so hard to get. It's more like she was forced into the very unoriginal second lead role. Anything else is just Korean entertainment news spin. She, being a newbie on the Korean scene is forced to take what she's been dished out. If she complains, she can kiss her career bye-bye.

It's such a dickhead move for a network to make such open promises they can't keep. Now they look bad. It would have been less embarrassing for them to have taken care of this behind the scenes.

the positive side of this: whoever person behind this drama, he's genius! especially in drama promotion. let's review his 'formula':

1. call the drama as remake of popular drama no matter how far the story/plot with the original as long as there's tiny similar premise => attract original's fans, even when the drama turn bad some will stick to drama to bash it, but they still watch (read: rating).

2. cast actor with large fanbase so no matter how bad the drama is they will defend it, preferably someone who already has experience in bad remakes (sorry JW, but you can't erase level7 and NC from your list) => fanwar between actor fan and original drama fan will create buzz, more will watch (read: rating).

3. create another buzz before filming; in this case open casting for female lead => genius! most drama viewers are female, so give them some hope, even if they fail they still can say "I'm this close to become part of this drama", for reminiscing this they will watch the drama (read: rating).

4. another buzz: drama behind drama! re-cast female lead to well known actress but let the open casting winner stay => some will watch for this well known actress and some will watch to support the open cast winner since poor her, after all she's done, but surely this secure viewer (read: rating).

I'm anticipating what he (she?) will do next. another buzz? other drama should learn from this drama production! if this turn out to have good or decent story, with this kind of promotion, on paper the rating will be bombastic!

Feel bad for Kim joo-hyun, but she wisely took the supporting part rather than quitting.

The production company probably was all ready to go ahead w/ KJH as the lead actress, but SBS (and probably the investors as well) pressured to get a "name" actress.

Have never seen OYS in anything but variety (like her in variety), but have good things about her acting.

A lot of actresses of her generation seem to have started off as idols - but for short-lived groups (so the idol-turned-actress stigma never really stuck with them).
