Nam Joo-hyuk joins new season of Three Meals a Day

The cast lineup has been finalized for the new season of tvN’s hit variety show Three Meals a Day, which will be returning in July for its fifth installment. Though they won’t be returning to Manjae Island, Na PD did recruit the Fishing Village cast for the new season, and Cha Seung-won (Hwajeong) and Sohn Ho-joon (Mrs. Cop) have signed on to return. Sadly, Yoo Hae-jin won’t be able to join them due to scheduling conflicts, so Nam Joo-hyuk (Cheese in the Trap) has been added as the newest cast member. It’s a little like Chajumma’s Adventures in Babysitting, but maybe he needs new challenges since cooking comes so easily to him.

Three Meals a Day takes a group of actors and sticks them in a remote location without the comforts of a modern kitchen, and their only requirement is to cook three meals a day. Each season included a work component as well—on the farm that meant growing their own vegetables, and on the island it meant catching their own fish. The island seasons had the added catch-fish-or-starve stakes built into the premise, which made for a more entertaining narrative beyond the usual hijinks.

For the new cast’s sake, I hope they’re not being shipped off to a new island, because Yoo Hae-jin was the fisherman who always brought home the catch of the day. I just don’t see Ho-joonie filling those shoes well enough to keep them from going hungry. I don’t know that new maknae Nam Joo-hyuk will be any more useful, but at least he’s had some experience on variety shows; he was funny and mischievous on JTBC’s I’m Going to School, so even if he’s useless in the kitchen he’ll probably be entertaining. In fact, I worry much less about him doing a variety show than I do about his acting.

PD Na Young-seok will be at the helm alongside PD Lee Jin-ju (Youths Over Flowers in Africa), and the location of the new season has yet to be announced. Three Meals a Day will return on July 1, and airs Friday nights on tvN.
