Let’s Eat spinoff Drinking Solo lines up its drinkers
by girlfriday
Park Ha-sun, Key, Hwang Woo-seul-hye
The Let’s Eat drinking spinoff series Drinking Solo is headed to tvN on Mondays and Tuesdays this fall, and casting is underway for the drama that’ll center around drinking (of course) and the Noryangjin neighborhood of Seoul, home to gazillions of academies and gosiwons all filled to the brim with students. Park Ha-sun (Temptation, Three Days) is currently considering an offer to star; Hwang Woo-seul-hye (Great Wife, Feel-Good Day) has signed on; and SHINee’s Key is also considering an offer for what would be his first drama role.
The new series from the PD of Let’s Eat 2 and the writer of Rude Miss Young-ae (Seasons 5-14) will be about academy teachers and students living in gosiwons, all struggling to survive and make something of their lives. Park Ha-sun is up for a character named Lee Shin-ip, whose name literally means “newbie.” She’s a Korean language teacher at an academy, and despite being in a powerless position, she’s a spirited person who stands up to her employers. One of the more memorable performances from Park Ha-sun was when she played a teacher in High Kick 3, so I can definitely picture her in the role being relatable and funny.
Hwang Woo-seul-hye has been cast as a sexy English teacher, and if you thought the first character name was bad, get ready to cringe at this one: Her character’s name is Han Saek-shi, or “sexy” (also “bride,” but they mean “sexy”). I know, who names their child Sexy? Anyway, she’s well-off and a popular teacher at the academy, so she often buys Park Ha-sun drinks and is a source of comfort for her. The character’s only weakness is her behavior when she’s drunk, though we don’t know yet what that’ll be. I hope it’s embarrassing, because I think Hwang Woo-seul-hye could pull that off.
SHINee’s Key is up to play a student living at a gosiwon, who’s been studying for the civil service exam for three years now. He’s actually from a wealthy family, but he’s an eccentric character who wants to experience the “Noryangjin Life” to the fullest, and lives like the other students there. I have no idea what to expect from Key since this is his first drama, so I hope he’s decently good at acting.
Drinking Solo will air on Mondays and Tuesdays following Bring It On, Ghost.

Can we have another proper male actor in addition to Key.
I have enjoyed Let's Eat 2 so please don't disappoint us with the casting of Drinking Solo, PD-nim.

since he is a blank page at acting on tv,
why not just let him do something before judge him?
you can't just write him off because he looks feminin,
if you search his other pic, he looks manly enough
looks in one pic aren't every thing

Okay first key isn't the lead he's a student and idk if they're gonna do things like that . Who would cast a person who has only done plays as the main ? Secondly Key is an awesome person you not liking him because his face is pretty is kinda rude. Its not his fault he's attractive. Most of shinee says that even though he's really pretty he's one of the man list in the group.

He is good actor or not???? that's the point not if he's pretty or not, it's not about looks, it's about talent.
Biased people are really annoying.

So here's my second "zero-interest-in-story, curious-about-SHINee" experience this year :-)
We'll have to wait and see, both whether he has any acting talent, and what his role is going to be; perhaps like Onew, he will be playing a character that isn't too different from his own real-life/variety persona. "Eccentric" sounds right up his alley; he has a pretty strong personality. In general, as long as they play it safe, I am cautiously optimistic.

I'm not really nervous about Key acting here tbh
I've been a shawol for almost five years and he already has a reputation in the fandom as an awesome actor in his musicals. I don't think he'll be on the same level as Minho because even Key cringes at Minho's (cringeworthy-indeed) acting lmao
If his character will be the same as his personality, I would not mind it because imho, Key is the best SHINee member in variety and *reality* shows.
Until we haven't seen him act in a drama, I hope you can all give him a chance! I know he will work hard and give his best in his performance :-)

Exactly as Lux says, Key has quite a bit of an experience as a musical actor, so I wouldn't write him off so quickly.
Who knows he could be the best actor in Shinee, since Minho and Taemin are both pretty average in acting.

I looked up photos of Key from his most recent play (Save the Green Planet) and honestly without his Shine makeup and idol fashion he looks like a pretty normal 'dude'.
Depending on how this show wants to style his character, I think he can pull off the 'student' look well.
As for his acting skills, I have not much to go on as I've only seen him on SNL. His acting was the most natural of his group's (which isn't saying much tbh since the rest were pretty bad) but he's had experience playing quite a diverse range of characters in his musicals; Zorro, Frank Abagnale, Clyde, Anatoly to name a few...
As long as he doesn't over-emote (unless this character calls for it) , then I think he'll have a pretty smooth transition from stage to the small screen.

I too originally saw Key as too feminine when I first started watching SHINee MVs, but have changed my mind after watching him in different shows. Particularly We Got Married. He is definitely (and will forever be) a diva, but he also has a surprisingly masculine side to him. He is self confident and witty. He knows who he is and what his limits are and it makes him very attractive. They don't call him the Almighty Key for nothing. So, is he a little feminine? Yeah. So what? That isn't ALL he is, and it doesn't detract from his charm.
And he has a lot of acting experience on the stage in lead roles. I have full faith that he could kill it as a lead in a drama like this. It's not like Doojoon was a well-established actor when he starred in Let's Eat and look how perfect he was. So... let's cool it with the negative vibe, yeah?

I rather see Let's eat 3 happening than a drinking series. Hopefully this show will introduce us to new healthy and refreshing drinks and is not just about promoting the alcoholic drinks and culture. I feel as if this spinoff will be incomplete with Doojoon but I think Beast is having a comeback soon.

Huh, Key is not the man I expected between those two leading ladies. I'm guessing it may make more sense with additional casting for the students though.
Key has gotten some pretty good reviews from his many musicals, more for his acting than singing, so perhaps this will work out. They probably won't write him a role too different from his variety persona, and if that's the case, he could be hilarious.
I'm actually pretty curious, because I know all about Korean food, but not much about the drinking culture. I feel like this would be very informative for me heh.

you pretty much took the words from my mouth, uh, fingertips...
Key has gotten a lot of praises for his musical acting, so I think he'll be good at being a loud, dramatic character. And he's hilarious on variety so I'm guessing it'll be something along that cheeky line for his character.
Fingers crossed that he does well. He'll be the third member of SHINee to act, I'm both wary and looking forward to it...

I just realized I'm very much invested into the show (Another Oh Hae Young) now coz almost every new post or news info reminds me of either AOHY or Seo Hyun Jin.
With that said, I prefer Let's Eat 3..

I love SHINee and Key is good at musical,
he may look like a woman but he can look like a man too, he just used that feminine look more,
he is witty and fun guy, he also likes fashion,
I just hope this doesn't encourage alcoholism but rather an enjoyable drinking experience (on many drink variation) and healthy drinking habit for alcohol,
but I am open to whatever funny drunk behavior except for everyday drunk situation

I knew Key got good reviews for his acting in musicals and plays but I was honestly slayed by his Eun Gyo parody skit (and other skits he took part in) on SNL Korea last year. He seemed very detailed in his acting and those nuances made it hilarious to watch for me. I hope he brings the same level to his drama acting and will get the writing/character to match his style and abilities.

There goes the hope of seeing Yoon Do Joon and Kim Seul Gi pairing in a Let's Eat series. Probably not feasible as well with KSG in new series and YDJ planning a comeback with beast soon. Le sigh.

Hmmm. After loving Let's Eat, I only wanted to start LE2 because of the dog and Doojoon. Ended up liking Seo Hyunjin and Kwon Yul. I would watch a spinoff with any of those 4, but this with the new actors and plot about drinking doesn't make me want to watch...

Hmm. I don't know what to feel. I looooved Let's Eat 1, but I dropped Let's Eat 2 because it's really disappointing. I mean, I love the individual actors, but I hate the characters and the writing. The best thing about Let's Eat 1 is that every single character is lovely, including the unloved second leads. Let's Eat 2 just goes out of this way to show off how the second lead isn't as bright and the heroine makes the most stupid decisions when she's with him, which is the thing that 8912387423 mediocre dramas have done.
That said, the writer of Drinking Solos is not the writer of Let's Eat, so I'm hoping the new story is gonna be better.

Supporting characters (esp. the comic ones) were better in LE1, but LE2 had the better overall story-line, romance and lead female.

I would have to disagree with that. The story was poorly written and the female lead could have done better at decision making. Lee Sookyung remains my favorite female lead of the franchise.

A big point was SHJ's character in LE2 not knowing that what she wanted was right in front of her b/c she had always dreamed of being w/ her "dream guy" (aside from her long feeling of betrayal by Doo-joon's character since child-hood).
One could really see how that relationship changed from platonic (DJ just trying to help SHJ in order to repay for his past "bad" act) to something more (since it was a "working" relationship where the goal was for SHJ to land her man, along w/ having known each other as children), there was a comfort level where SHJ 's character could act naturally and just be herself instead of trying to act proper and uphold a certain image.
In LE1, there was really no believable progression of the relationship btwn DJ and LSK.
LSK didn't like DJ from the start (for really no reason) and then suspects that he is the attacker and calls the cops on him.
OK - DJ's character is a cool cat and he is willing to overlook that - but there really was nothing in LE1 which made it believable for DJ to fall for LSK or vice versa (which probably is why that relationship didn't last DJ's move).
The lead relationship was much better handled in 2 (but the supporting characters were more interesting/fun in 1).

I adore Park Ha-Sun!!! In High Kick, I was so impressed by her full-body(?) commitment to the comedy. I mean, she's great in dramatic roles too, but I'm glad that she's doing something fun again.
I'm satisfied with Hwang Woo Seul Hye too. The only question mark is Key. But at least he has some acting experience, even if stage-to-screen transitions aren't always successful. But whatever, positive thoughts... For now.
The names are quite dumb though... I hope they get changed.

According to Wiki he's had lead roles in 8 musicals/play and none of them anywhere close to his variety persona. I think he is capable, but if the PD-nims and writers gave him a character close to his personality, he'll have to go with it.

I love Key so I'm excited to see how he'll do in a drama. Hopefully he'll be able to pull off a fun character. If you haven't seen the Eun Gyo SNL skit with Key, you should because it's hilarious.
The only thing that worries me about this show though is the premise. There's already enough drunken scenes and antics in every other kdrama. I'm not sure I want to see a show solely focused on it. If we're lucky it'll just be about the drinking culture and the bonds made over drinks and not the actual act of getting drunk.

Okay before everyone is slandering Key and even criticizing that he's feminine and such (which is unnecessary), please note that he's been in a lot of musicals before, and his acting is usually praised (he can probably do better than Minho). I don't know how he will do in dramas, but maybe for a start his character may help him. His role is described as someone eccentric, so hopefully that will help him adjust.
I love Park Hasun, so now we just have to wait for a perfect leading man. I see her as somehow goofy and a bit silly, so the exact opposite man will be a fun mix (but don't cast someone emotionless, that's just too much)

Now you are prepared to accept the big leap and begin building your list on a massive
scale. For example, if your fence will be keeping animals
from your yard or garden, you may need to design it a
bit differently than you'd whether it's purely for privacy.
First, you will need to evaluate if privacy is the only concern or if a fence
provides another serve as well.
