Park Shin-hye, Lee Sung-kyung up for new SBS drama Doctors

Baek In-ha, as a doctor? A neurosurgeon at that? I can’t be the only one having a total brain malfunction every time I try to picture this, right? SBS has a new Monday-Tuesday drama in the works called Doctors, which is about — you guessed it — doctors. The drama was originally called Female Gangster Hye-jung, after the prickly heroine, but decided for some reason to go with the most generic title on Earth, so Doctors it is. Offers are currently out to Park Shin-hye (Pinocchio) and Lee Sung-kyung (Cheese in the Trap) to star.

The new series comes from writer Ha Myung-hee, of High Society, Warm Words, and Can We Get Married. Park Shin-hye has reportedly been considering the project for some time, but is still unconfirmed. She’s being courted to headline as a neurosurgery fellow with obstinate follow-through. She’s smart and active and bold, but her outgoing personality develops a dark inner side when she faces some turmoil in her life. She doesn’t share her inner feelings and doesn’t trust other people, to the point that she wants no relationships of any kind with others.

Model-turned-actress Lee Sung-kyung is up for the role of the heroine’s main rival, a former high school classmate who’s also a neurosurgery fellow. She was born with everything — good looks, money, a prestigious doctor family. She wants for nothing in life and even has a bright, cheerful personality and a strong sense of justice, and is loved by everyone around her. But when the person she loves is stolen from her, she goes evil. Does she also go crazy?

The drama centers around the incorrigible heroine who starts out a gangster (metaphorically, I think) and eventually learns to become a good doctor. It’s about the unfair social hierarchy present in the medical field and promises realism in its approach. I dunno, your casting director might need a helping hand with that so-called realism. Just sayin’.

Doctors is slated to follow Jackpot (after Six Flying Dragons) on Mondays and Tuesdays in June.

sigh. what is with all this negativity around lee sung-kyung? she was amazing during the last two eps of citt, pretty much the only bright spot. her eyerolling acting was too much but i think she was told to act like that, since she was so good at acting crazy in the last two eps. i hesrd she was decent in other dramas as well. i think, with some more experience, lee sung-kyung could be great.

just stay away from citt pd lee sung-kyung~~

Just a neurosurgeon? Not a genius neurosurgeon ? That tears it.

Medical dramas give me hives. Good luck to both ladies.

it has to be GENIUS, there is NO surgeon in this world looking that young what more NEUROsurgeon, unless you finished your high school at the age 12 and completed your bachelor's degree at 16.... geezz seriously, kdrama should stop producing medical dramas because they are so misleading.

I both laughed out and loud and felt like slapping whoever came up with this idea. It takes years and years to be a neurosurgeon.

She actually brought it in the latter half of the drama and as a consequence, her character and performance felt layered and complex in a way that did not reek of tropey-ness - unlike, say, her screen brother.

People who continue to rag on her for her early exaggerations (which she herself has confirmed were as per PD's instructions) are missing out. She doesn't suit innocent Candy roles, but she does have great screen presence and the ability to really unleash it all in a role.

I felt the exaggerated acting in the first half was more an attempt to translate the webtoon character directly to a drama. When reading a webtoon or manhwa/manga, the characters are often campy and loud, which works in that format. However, when its adapted into live action it seems awkward and a little too much. I think that was the problem with Lee Sung-kyung's interpretation but as everyone said before, she really brought a complexity and nuance to her character later on in the drama.

Maybe it's me but I really don't find it hard to imagine her as a doctor, her very young face would be the biggest obstacle but Cynthia managed it in Yong-pal. As long as the character in text is like in her thirties maybe. I'm a little uncomfortable with the type-casting of LSK, her notable roles were of unlikeable "bitchy" characters but its not really that hard. If Choi Min-ho could dibidibidis into a doctor's coat so can she.

Also that "she turns evil because of love" is so tired and lazy, like let's push the envelope this whole main lead versus second lead could easily be transformed into lesbian!doctors(I know, Baek In-ha's not the only delusional one here but a girl can hope right?)

Frankly, I hated Baek In Ha in the beginning, until the few last episodes when i can clearly see her pains. LSK did a great performance in CITT.

IF LSK work harder in the future, she can be like Yoo In Young.

Lee Sung Kyung went so overboard in her depiction of BIH that she should consider taking acting classes before taking on any more acting roles!

She actually had a good handle on Baek In-ha through the latter half of the drama, especially once she was allowed to be more than just crazy+bitchy+shopaholic.

(though I admire her for going all-in on even the most OTT parts of her role, she really committed to it)

Her overblown behavior was specifically dictated to her, she even commented about that.

I think she did great and deserves a good show after the mess of CITT. That said, I thought High Society was really a poor story so I'm not excited for this possible show.

Indeed, she was fantastic in Cheese and I loved her. Obviously she was asked to go this overboard, there is no way they wouldn't notice while filming. Even some of the scenes where clearly thought to display In Ha's extravagant character: like the one where she comes to save Nerdy friend from the bullying guy. She was great there :D
I also agree that she was capable to give more nuances to her character when it was allowed.

She has potential and I am glad she is being offered prominent roles. I will look forward to see her in screen again :)

Is it strange that I'm actually more confident in Lee Sung Kyung's ability to pull off her role than I am in PSH, though she's a more experienced actress? I just don't see PSH with a dark, inner side, though I am waiting for her to surprise me (she pulled off troubled introvert in FBND, so this should be little challenge to her). This would be the first truly adult non-romantic role I've ever seen her in from a drama perspective and I'm kind of looking forward to it.

Yay, Park Shin-hye! I always wanted to see her in a tougher role. She was great as spunky In-ha in Pinocchio and it was definitely a slight departure from her usual roles, too, so let's kick that up a notch!

I don't mind the casting (I was probably part of the minority that actually didn't mind Lee Sung-kyung's acting in Cheese), but I'm dreading the latter half of her character description. I was all for it until the "evil" part. Can we not go there?

Lee Sung-kyung's a champ at playing larger-than-life and bitchy, but also has decent comic delivery and a good sense of subtler emotion when she's actually allowed to not exaggerate.

But she really doesn't suit Candy roles like the one in Queen's Flower, and I wish this role didn't have her going evil again. But I think she could make a fun villain, especially opposite Park Shin-hye.

I think LSK mentioned in an interview that she wanted to keep BIH low key but the PD actually wanted even a more OTT one.

But the (rare) scenes she had to show genuine emotion, totally had me rooting for her so i think she can easily pull it off.

On the other hand PSH.

Can she do a role where she doesn't want a relationship with anyone - Yes. But can she do a role which requires "dark inner side" - dunno.

She has this perpetual "dukhyaari, bechaari" expression - basically means that someone who is just fed up of the world and dying under its weight. Dark, morally grey doesn't sound like her.

I think PSH is actually capable of playing more than long-suffering martyr/crusader heroines, her character in Cyrano Dating Agency was quite the minx.

And at least she has a baseline level of acting ability, people are far more forgiving of even idol actors/actresses who suck at acting way worse than PSH ever has.

"Active an Bold"?? I don't believe ya!! It might actually turn out the other way round. lol I haven't seen many strong and bold female charactes in kdramas. They start of kick-ass only for few episodes. Then they start to become weak, wrist dragged and cry baby. Especially in dramas featuring PSH. I don't why writers always mess up her characters. Her expressions in her dramas are usually sad, weak and frowning eyebrow. I hope she will be able to bring out the best in her in this upcoming drama.
My last words: PSH, please don't MESS the kiss scenes!! Seriously, she already have a lot of experience in acting. It would great if she could choose good roles like what Ha Ji won had in Empress Qi, My lovely Kim Sam Soon and Song hye kyo's character in "The time that they lived in", which was pretty smart and strong. I don't care about the ratings though

A female-centric drama about a neurosurgeon and social hierarchy... but can she kiss?!

It peeves me off that kissing is always brought up about her, I think I actually lashed out here once about it. It has come to a point that people want her to be bad at kissing that they overly nitpick her kiss scenes to justify it, so honestly they just want it as an easy way to put her down. Her Pinocchio kiss scenes conveyed the right emotions and some people still had something to say about it.

But that's all you care and it's funny when the drama hasn't even mentioned anything about love line yet...

And by dramas featuring PSH you mean Heirs.... it's the only one fits the description. It's KES's female roles... as everyone should be aware by now... It's not the actresses to blame...
Have you even watched her lasted Pinocchio?

I think this is a great role to prove people like you wrong

It's funny how when I see a k-drama with many other actresses, I find myself wondering why theirs is never judged the same way or found lacking......once even thought of writing them down for others to discuss ...lol...

I agree that besides the actor/actress, the writer and director surely has more say on what sort and level of intimacy should be in a kiss scene. Every situation demands differently. Rather than waiting for it to happen midway or so in a drama .....one should enjoy the story being enacted.

I like that she's ready to finally do something different instead of various versions of Candy. I love the sound of 'dark inner side' - it'll probably allow her to prove herself as an actress. LSK on the other hand - yea I have no idea what the casting PDs were thinking. Were they even thinking or just casted randomly? I just couldn't swallow her oh-so-terrible acting. Not sure if I'll be sticking around to see if she'd improve. Depends on the male lead because I'm not a big fan of PSH either.

Ummm.... how about her role as a lawyer in Miracle of Cell no. 7? She was highly praised for that scene and was able to move the viewers emotionally. She even had international reviews that were very positive in regards to that role.

And people keep wondering if she can play a dark role. Has anyone seen her in Beauty Inside? I think that's like a prelude to the types of dark characters that she can play. Sure she plays a lot of cutesy roles, but Choi In Ha was feisty, so she did exhibit a different range lately. I don't understand why people are so hung up on her older roles from when she was younger and I'm sick of the blatant obviousness of others' "BAD ROLES" getting swept under the rug whereas PSH's always get brought up over and over again.... at least that tell you one thing — She's memorable.

Shinhye actually has more capability than people give her credit for.

She pulled off introvert urban Rapunzel Dokmi in FBND and matter-of-fact Minyeong in Cyrano Agency as well as punky honest Inha in Pinocchio effortlessly
It's sad that her most popular projects aren't ones that could show case her acting ability

I see the similar with this role and her Dokmi role who also distance herself and doesn't have relationship with anyone...
It's hard to imagine her being bad ass if you just only watch her candy roles but the girl is pretty tomboy and sporty in real life... I think she can pull if off.

My concern is the writer. She isn't consistent and High Societty was a mess even it had good ratings

I have a lot of qualms about the writer though. High Society was a mess for a lot of reasons acting wise but I felt the story line was lacking in cohesive plot. It did have an interesting premise that the lead was a more ambitious unlikeable character rather than a down-trodden male Candy. There were serious problems with the heroine's motivation throughout the plot.

Have not seen any of this writer's work. Based on the ratings of dramas penned by her and reviews........causes me grave concerns.

A good plot can go down the drain and a mediocre rise to great heights in the hands of the writer. The fact that the script won an award in 2010 is the silver lining for me.
A good director with an award winning script surely is something that cannot be ignored......

On a personal level .....do hope it augurs well specially since I have been waiting to see Shinhye in a drama for over a year......her character in the drama shows lot of promise and something challenging that she has not done before...

I wonder if you have watched all PSH's work to say that?
How can Inha in Pinocchio is the same with CES in Heirs or Dokmi in FBND or or Hana in TOH or Minyeon in YB?

Besides there is very limited role for female lead in drama lands... They are mostly just the leading men's love interests.

At least Shinhye has been doing her job according to the job, no over-reacting in any of her roles. Why would shinhye has to act like BIH to please you? You are free to feel whatever you want. People have the right to say their opinions. Just because she isn't get bashed enough, you are mad? But on the other hand i don't mind another grey role for her conditioned on the fact that she approaches this role differently, that she did to Baek In Ha. Maybe a more calm, calculative, intelligent evil...much much much toned down acting too. I think that would be interesting.

As far as Park Shin hye is concerned, she is one of my favorites, so i am automatically in once she says yes :)

Infact i would love to see both of them as rivals to each other, given that i warmed upto LSK, irrespective of the crazy her character went in the last few episodes, i liked glimpses of vulnerability shown. I think she can be great with more polish.

I looooooooooove Park Shin-hye, I have a huge soft spot for her. I tried watching Pinocchio and while I enjoyed her performance, I was so turned off by Lee Jong-seok that I couldn't bear to finish it. This is possibly a very unpopular opinion but the romance between them bored me to tears because I think they didn't have any chemistry. In fact, I think she had more chemistry with Kim Young-kwang than Lee Jong-seok. I loved Park Shin-hye in The Royal Tailor and in Dating Agency Cyrano, I couldn't finish FBND because I was annoyed at Enrique Geum.
I also think that Lee Sung-kyung is capable of being a good actress, there were moments in Cheese when she toned down the crazy and you could really see that she can act.
This writer though, I've been burned once by High Society, she completely destroyed that drama for me the moment she decided to shove her leads to the back burner and focus on the second lead pair. But we'll have to wait and see, I really don't mind medical dramas.

One question - why is Park Shin Hye and Suzy so disrespected here? Huh? I am not relating it to this article but its been in my mind for really long.

What have they done to you? Their acting is just fine and doesn't deserve such eye rolling comments.

You all need to stop with elitist attitude. Praying Han Groo whose acting is even under-par than most actresses as if she is some goddess and putting down other actresses. Is this even acceptable? Worse than netizenbuzz I say.

What kind of standard here when you all kissing oppa's ass even if their acting suck? And shit on all the actresses?

PSH can't please you with her kissing. But she is far the the worst actress like you guys here treating her. She has proved herself for years

I'm tired of double standard and trashing too... That's why I haven't visited here for a while.

You guys are trash but you think you are so cool and have standard.

Sigh. I expected 'kiss' and 'bad acting' whenever an article about PSH is out in db. I'm kinda tired but whatever. I'm watching anything that she does cause she's awesome. I'm concerned with the writer though. Fingers crossed.

I loved LSK in It's Okay, That's Love and Cheese. Apart from the crazy moments, i liked how her eyes are able to spell hurt and vulnerability (on the one to two scenes she was able to finally not be crazy). The only issue is that i've seen so much crazy from her, that i cannot picture her as a genius doctor lol. I do think, though, that she needs a non crazy role soon to move her past that crazy image. I'm just not sure if this is the role.

Those that think park min young is "bad" at acting are also cray, for me han groo is better than psh in folds just my honest opinion having seen many of both their roles

Why do you have to bring other actresses here? And you might think PMY or HG are better but Korea might think otherwise

Pass just because I can't watch too many medical dramas (read as I can barely get through one per year).

Best of luck to all who sign on to watch.

The writer! The writer!

One sentence. I'm staying away. Oh my, she came back... Quite soon to add in too. I think she has the ability to turn decent actors and actresses to worst. This might happen to psh too. I kinda like her better after Pinocchio.. This might ruin it. Lol.

Staying away it is.

Yes, often the poor ratings of a drama is taken as a poor performance of an actor/actress with the writer and director getting it easier. But, then the success of a drama is also considered as mostly due to them.
It's a team effort and the end result is a reflection of their combined talents.
If one can be discerning enough to realize where to place the credit or discredit for the success /failure of a drama.....it would be great.
I am happy that Shinhye is taking her time to consider this offer.......even if it means more waiting.

Not a fan of the writer, big fan of PSH. I hope PSH doesn't take this...I want to see her in something really quality.

Neutral on LSK in general, although I can't stand her at her most over the top. Really would watch this if it happened with a different head writer, but as it stands...pass.

SALTS comments regarding psh casting in this drama has been nonchalant tbh and definitely not positively considering... so i dont know whether she'll take it or not. Whatever it's hope tht she can do more mature and challenging roles as she said in elle hk iv (i really like tht she wants to play psychotic killer!). Dont whine when she tries to do sth different whatmore being sceptical. These kinds of people are those who turn off actors/actress from doing sth new. Even it's a failure at least she did try to get out of her comfort zone

I love LSK. I think she has decent acting. CITT is only one of the bad drama project of her, but not in the term of her acting. I'm looking forward how they will bring this drama. Will check 1-2 eps first before decide to continuing.

I adore Park Shin Hye but the drama will be written by the one who created High Society. . . Tough call. . .

If Park Shin Hye is on board, I'll watch it! Lee Sung Kyung did a great job in Cheese and she saved the last 2 episodes so I'm definitely going to play attention to this.

Why everyone keep saying Cheese in the trap is a bad drama is beyond me. If you consider school 2013, pinocchio and the likes which is full of bad acting (yess acting in general is painfull to watch) and uneven directing a decent / good drama, Then I can hardly say Cheese in the trap which is fill overall solid cast and overall decent directing even if the tird act is no longer cohesive can consider a drama mess... I'm no longer can hardly take Dramabeans eyes on drama seriously any longer

And acting wise Lee Sung Kyung is head and shoulder Park SHin Hye in terms of acting.... PSH is just sooo limit

PSH used to get a lot of criticism for bad acting and "bad kissing" but for her last drama Pinocchio, she improved. PSH is still not that good but she is a decent actress.

Every one is perfect except park shin hye limited bcz the writers don't write variety of women characters so we should blame her.......?????

No honey I am not butthurted bcz some tend to put shin hye down and bring her as she is the worst but they didn't want to admit that writing is mediocre and boring .
They still compare her to every girl in the entertainment why ???
And why are you butthurted that I defend the fact that you shouldn't compare to make your fave more sweet simply it is pathetic .

At the end of the day, PSH's status as an actress is above and beyond may others

tsk tsk do you even watched her early works to say she's soooo limit? she did tree of heaven when she was 16 and the smart badass rich privilege girl in prince hour. but then people like you only care about the 'limited' role she had done lately. watch those first and tell me she's sooooo limit or come back here when lee sung kyung has done better heavy melo than her. . at such a young age not many can handle heavy melo. it's not her that limit but you who have only watch a limit of her works

I'm not sure about this drama... park shin hye is playing yet again a woman from poor family background.. i really like her but her roles have been pretty limited in range at least in dramas. as for lee sung kyung (i know she is a newcomer), she definitely over acted in cheese in the trap. i thought she was good in it's okay it's love but then the whole drama was very solid. hope she doesn't try so hard...

I agree no need for comparisons....may it be PMY, LSK, PSH or any other. How each performed their characters should be the name of the game.
Anything else does fall into the category of personal likes and dislike based on how much one enjoys watching them.
