Six Flying Dragons: Episode 32

If last episode belonged to our recently reformed but still hot-headed dragon, this one belongs to our usually even-tempered dragon, as he finally lets loose and shakes up the status quo. Jung Do-jeon is at his best when he’s not locked in a sitting position for scenes on end, and this hour is about unleashing him upon the world. Nameless better gird their loins and pray they won’t ever have to face the full force of their worst opponent’s might, but we get to wait for that confrontation with bated breath. Ah, the joys of being a viewer.

EPISODE 32 RECAP

After Bang-won’s breakdown, the two sit by a warming fire as he tells Boon-yi that he’s expecting a reply from Nameless regarding her mother. He’ll keep his promise to her about her mother and the land reform.

Boon-yi eyes him warily, knowing that something must’ve happened for him to suddenly be talking about promises and why they can’t play together anymore. Instead of answering her, Bang-won just asks her to say his name.

“Bang-won-ah,” she says. He sheepishly asks her again, and she obliges: “Bang-won-ah. Lee Bang-won.” At his happy smile, she asks what that was all about, only for him to tell her not to say his name like that again. Nor to use informal speech.

He holds back tears as he says this, but Boon-yi tries to comfort him by saying she understands. Then she corrects herself so she says that she understands formally, rather than the informal speech they’re used to.

“If you call my name…” Bang-won begins to explain, but he can’t tell her that it would be hard on him, or that it would make him feel weak. But Boon-yi again comforts him by again telling him that she understands, and he doesn’t need to explain.

She knows that he’ll become a member of the royal family if everything works out, so of course she’ll need to use formal speech with him. The fact that he let her speak informally for this long was a privilege she was grateful for, because it made her feel like a true friend to him.

“So the people will feel happiness in their lives every day, become a great member of the royal family and practice good politics,” she adds. Bang-won looks at her with tears in his eyes before he suddenly closes the gap between them and kisses her. They stay like that for a long while, with Boon-yi held in his arms.

After declaring to himself that he will make a place for himself where Jung Do-jeon said there wasn’t one, Bang-won is approached by Nameless (in the form of Yeon-hyang, though he doesn’t know her) and is taken to the Tribunal, blindfolded.

He can see their shapes behind the screens hung in front of them, and wonders aloud whether they’re trying to see if he’s fit for ruling. Yeon-hyang speaks for all three of them when she says that they only intend to find out whether Cho-young spoke the truth about him.

Since Cho-young told them that Bang-won was angered by Jung Do-jeon’s plans to give the prime minister almost total power, they ask him to explain his thoughts to them. Bang-won shrugs the idea off, claiming he already told Cho-young everything and has no more to say on the matter.

But what they want to know is if Jung Do-jeon’s five point plan, or ohchik, is enough to turn Bang-won against him. His voice lowers as he accuses them of already having made up their minds on that matter, and he stands as he tells them that he will not be another Hong Ryun.

The two men on either side of Nameless Grandma rise up to stop him (and are not Gil Sun-mi or Yooksan), which immediately tells Bang-won that it’s she who is the leader here. He bows to her, and proposes that they each ask three questions of each other.

She agrees, so Bang-won goes first. “What is this organization’s goal?” When she answers that it’s stability for the country, Bang-won can’t help but laugh. They put Lee In-gyeom in a high position and put Goryeo in the state it’s in, and they call that stability?

Yeon-hyang defends their choice, claiming that more political upheaval happened when Lee In-gyeom stepped down—namely, the two kings who’ve abdicated since. Then it’s time for Granny to ask a question about the ohchik, which isn’t the first time they’ve mentioned it. Bang-won starts to wonder why.

Gil Sun-mi rides hard to try and make it to the meeting, anxious that Bang-won will tell them about Yeon-hyang’s children being alive. He flashes back to the end of his conversation with Cho-young, where she called him out on not delivering the dead bodies of Yeon-hyang’s children because he couldn’t do something so cruel to her.

The insinuation being, of course, that he harbored special feelings for her. Cho-young had also scoffed that she couldn’t understand why Yeon-hyang had children with someone from the country. Wait… is Gil Sun-mi their father?

We only hear the fifth point of the ohchik as Bang-won explains it, which is the rule about royal family members being unable to participate in politics. To his question about when Nameless started, Nameless Granny answers that it was during the Silla Dynasty, under Queen Seon-deok’s rule. Specifically, a person called Yeom Jong, a name which Bang-won recognizes as a traitor who was closely tied with Bidam.

Their next question is what Bang-won would do about the tradition wherein the king asks the head monk for advice when making important national decisions, and of course he’d abolish it. He’s trying to make a country of sadaebu, and such an archaic method would be out of place.

His last question is whether a Yeon-hyang exists in their organization, and all the real Yeon-hyang answers is, “Yes, there is.” Her final return question is why he wants to know, and he tells her that Yeon-hyang’s children are looking for her. Both her and Nameless Granny try to hide their shock.

Gil Sun-mi arrives too late to stop those words coming out of Bang-won’s mouth, and meets instead with Nameless Granny’s rage. He wants only to speak with Yeon-hyang, who steps out from behind a boulder.

Yooksan is not happy to hear that Yeon-hyang’s children are alive, mainly because he was the one who orchestrated their (not-)deaths to look like a rival faction within Nameless had committed the murders. That was how he got Yeon-hyang to join them in the first place.

Cho-young tells him where the children are now, while also sighing over Yeon-hyang’s pitiful fate. Though they both trained together to become Mugeuk candidates (I’m guessing some offshoot of Nameless), only Yeon-hyang succeeded. Now, she is Mugeuk. So… not an offshoot?

That’s evident when Gil Sun-mi falls to his knees before Mugeuk, aka Yeon-hyang. This comes as a huge shock to Jukryong, who also falls to his knees before her. So is she the true leader?

Gil Sun-mi has a lot of explaining to do, and admits that he lied about her children being killed by an opposing faction so that she wouldn’t go running off to her hometown. She immediately knows he did so on Yooksan’s orders, and vows revenge.

He stops her, warning her that they can’t afford to get into another civil war. He also reluctantly tells her where her children are—Lee Bang-ji, the best swordsman in the Three Kingdoms, is her son. Boon-yi currently works for Lee Seong-gye’s private army.

Yeon-hyang realizes then that she was the one who ordered him to trick her son for the assassination attempt on Lee Seong-gye. But Gil Sun-mi defends that he did so by telling him he could meet his mother, and also makes it seem as though he tricked Bang-ji away in order to protect him.

Steadily losing her cool, Yeon-hyang stabs a dagger into Gil Sun-mi’s chest and dares him to continue. He does, stating that all this misfortune started when she betrayed Nameless, abandoned him, and ran away to her hometown. When she’s the reason he abandoned the king and joined Nameless in the first place.

Pulling her dagger out, all Yeon-hyang says to him is to keep this a secret from Yooksan. She doesn’t know that Yooksan already knows, and he assumes she doesn’t when she puts him in charge of Lee Bang-won. He’s to find out everything he can about Jung Do-jeon’s plans, which are dangerous to their cause.

Bang-won updates the two worried siblings on what he’s learned of their mother, though he seems to be holding back information when he tells them that Nameless seemed shocked when he mentioned her by name. He claims to know no more than that.

Yooksan firmly believes that Gil Sun-mi didn’t tell Yeon-hyang the truth in order to prevent another civil war within Nameless, but the mystery as to who killed Traitor Baek is still ongoing. They’ve narrowed it down to the woman they saw with the king, though they have no idea who she really is.

Bang-won then updates Jung Do-jeon on his meeting with Nameless, leaving out the part where he told them about the ohchik. What’s most important to Jung is that they believed Bang-won, but before he lets the young dragon go, he gives him a word of advice.

“In order to deceive your enemy, you have to deceive those around you and yourself as well. But if you deceive yourself for too long, you run the risk of becoming the lie you’re telling. Be careful.” Which leads Bang-won to wonder whether Jung Do-jeon might know more than he’s letting on.

Master Hong trains Bang-won’s private army using his patented martial arts style, but when they’re not getting the grunting sound properly, he has Moo-hyul do a demonstration for them. Watching Moo-hyul move and grunt pointedly is maybe the funniest scene in this show so far. You just have to see/hear it.

The perpetually outraged Jo Joon (stop yelling, everyone can hear you) demands that Jung Do-jeon’s team do something about the corrupt land surveying going on, since the noble class is using it to divert even more land to themselves. At this rate, there won’t be anything left for the people.

Now it’s finally Lee Seong-gye’s turn to get upset, since he must look like a monster to the people—he’d promised to return their stolen lands upon his retreat from Wihwa Island. But all he’s done is kill General Choi, attack General Jo and the elite noble class, and he made the deposed King Woo and the tiny King Chang kill themselves by drinking poison.

On top of that, he also sent the revered Lee Saek into exile, so how must he look to the people? Jung Do-jeon lays out their options, neither of which are very good, since continuing the land survey in such a haphazard manner will mean that they’ll never get the equal division of land they dreamt of.

Jung Do-jeon doesn’t know which option they should take, and even confides this to Bang-ji. He asks how Bang-ji knows whether to attack or defend in a fight, but Bang-ji says it’s not the choice that matters so much as believing in that choice.

“But what if you make the wrong choice?” Jung Do-jeon asks. “Then you die,” Bang-ji replies matter-of-factly.

With rumors circulating that Lee Seong-gye made his retreat from Wihwa Island just to become king, Jung Do-jeon takes Boon-yi aside to get her opinion on the land matter. He explains that if they allow the survey to go on as it is, the people who’ve had their lands stolen will get them back, but the equal distribution they’d hoped for will never come to pass.

Boon-yi tells him that all her people who’ve been hoping for land to come out of this reform would tell him not to give up, which is when Jung Do-jeon admits that it’s no easy task. She doesn’t deny that, but knows that he never takes the easy route. “You won’t forget about the people. You will do something about it,” she adds with certainty.

Jung Do-jeon remembers meeting her as an adult, and how she’d declared that she wouldn’t—couldn’t—just stand by and do nothing. “I have to at least do something to live!” she’d said. In the present, Jung Do-jeon smiles, feeling now what she felt then. “I believe in you,” Boon-yi says for added support.

So Jung Do-jeon returns to the group with a plan solidified: They’ll go along with the land reform as it stands, but they won’t give up on the equal distribution because of it. He’s ordered Shin-jeok to help him in this regard, and Officer Nam fills us in on his long absence by being all, “Oh yeah, what’s he been up to?”

Dressed in plainclothes, Lee Seong-gye goes out into the market to see the public display of mourning for the loss of General Choi. The sinister ministers once belonging to Minister Hong’s camp make it their job to turn the tide of public opinion against Lee, since they don’t want to lose their land.

They rouse the people into directing their anger at Jung Do-jeon, whom they claim even locked up his own teacher (Lee Saek) out of a ruthless grab for power. His land reform is just more proof of his greed, they claim, and the people seem ready to believe it.

And unbeknownst to Bang-ji, the mother he’s been looking for is there among the crowd, staring at her son.

After King Gongyang takes Lee Seong-gye to task for the public’s outrage, he tells Sa-kwang to report the conversation to Jung Mong-joo. She’s waylaid en route by Jukryong’s thugs, but saved when Moo-hyul comes upon the scene and beats them into submission.

She thanks him by using the magic word (Warrior-nim), causing Moo-hyul to stare at her with hearts in his eyes. He insists on escorting her where she needs to go, and thinks that everything she says is the neatest thing ever—like how she dances, and plays instruments.

Sa-kwang uses his enamored state to ask him where he stays, since he seemed to be quite skilled in martial arts. And with a goofy smile, Moo-hyul asks if he could watch her dance. Sa-kwang offers him a gracious smile and promises that if she ever has a chance to show him, she will.

No sooner does Moo-hyul turn the corner does she turn around to see Jukryong’s thugs again, but she refuses to go with them. They think she’s lost her only protection in Moo-hyul, until she takes one of their swords and deftly uses the flat of the blade and the dull side to fell each and every one of them in quick succession.

That’s when Jukryong jumps into the fray, and their ensuing battle pits their superior martial arts skills against each other. But in the end, Sa-kwang prevails. “Are you Nameless?” she asks, before seemingly growing nervous. Suddenly she says it doesn’t matter where he came from, only that he never bother her, King Gongyang, or Jung Mong-joo again.

Jukryong takes the news straight to Yooksan that the girl the king was going to marry is the one who killed Traitor Baek and the two assassins. He adds that he was sorely outmatched by her, leading Gil Sun-mi to the conclusion that she could be Cheok Sa-kwang.

Nameless knows now that they won’t be able to stop the land reform from passing, so all they can do is try to make the terms more favorable to them. But Yeon-hyang has a keen eye on opponent Jung Do-jeon, who finds himself commending Bang-won on finally becoming an adult.

Since Bang-won admitted that there’s no way for them to know how taking this one step back on the reform will affect them in the future, Jung Do-jeon knows he’s changed—if it were the old and impatient Bang-won, he could’ve predicted his actions easily.

“You did not care what came before or after, nor did you look ahead of time with your childish and short-sighted judgment,” Jung Do-jeon notes. But now, Bang-won 2.0 is making decisions befitting an adult of stature, and he’s proud of him. Otherwise, he would’ve made decisions that he couldn’t turn back from.

Jung Do-jeon instructs Boon-yi to gather her market contacts outside the Taxation Office, and leaves the door open so she can invite all of them inside. They cause a diversion for the sinister ministers putting on a show to sway the people, which draws everyone’s attention away from them and toward the source of their supposed panic.

Inside one of the city gates, Boon-yi and her people gather every taxation record they collected from the office into a big, burnable pile. Jung Do-jeon steps in front to address the crowd of onlookers, telling them that everything they’ve accused him of doing is because of those records piled behind him.

All of Goryeo’s land deeds are in that pile, which means that the records of the lands stolen from them are also there too. He appeals to the people by sympathizing with their sense of loss, blaming the insane taxation enacted by Minister Hong and his ilk for taking their lands from them.

To make matters worse, he says, the sinister ministers who were responsible for stealing their land in the first place are the ones going against the reform by using complicated political logic. He points at those men directly as he bellows, “Politics! What is politics? Politics may look complicated, but in truth, it is quite simple!”

And then, “Politics is to share, to distribute amongst the people. The problem with politics is who to collect from and who to give it to, who to take from and whose bellies to fill.” He points at the ministers again as he asks who they’ve taken from and who they gave to, knowing that they stole from the people to give only to themselves.

“I, Jung Do-jeon, will participate in politics from now on,” he declares. Lighting a torch, he passes the flame on to the people. Dozens of torches light up, surrounding the pile of records. He asks the people if they’d rather divide up the already corrupted land of Goryeo, or if they’d rather slash-and-burn and start anew.

The people cry for the latter, so Jung Do-jeon pours oil on the records. The joy from the crowd is instantaneous, and Bang-won realizes with a small smile that this is what Jung Do-jeon meant about making a decision where there’s no turning back. If all the land deeds are burned, there will be no choice but to divide and distribute the land evenly.

Jung Do-jeon says he’s unqualified to burn the pile since he’s never had to slash-and-burn anything before, willing to give the power over to the farmers. But Bang-won announces from the crowd that the offer should be extended to anyone who’s set a fire before, causing many of the spectators to speak out about how they burned their houses down when their lands were stolen.

That’s the final straw in turning the tide of the crowd in their favor, and they all rush forward to set fire to the pile. The ministers’ protests mean nothing now, and they get to watch the records burn just like everyone else.

“Now, the land in this nation will be reborn!” Jung Do-jeon declares victoriously, laughing as he looks into the flames. The chyron tells us that this was a real historical event that happened in September of 1930, and that the fire burned steady for days after.

Jung Mong-joo watches from the crowd, amazed that Jung Do-jeon has done it again. But he vows to make his old friend step down and rest soon.

Bang-won watches Jung Do-jeon laugh while backlit by the growing fire and thinks to himself, “I.. that man… I still like him. Damn it.” With that, he allows himself to be swept up in the mood and smiles.

COMMENTS

I wouldn’t have believed Bang-won if he said he didn’t like him, since that man is a charismatic magnet that pulls respect and admiration out of anyone who hears him speak. It almost makes you angry at the show for letting Jung Do-jeon just sit in various rooms for what feels like way too long now, having to always restrain himself so as not to deter Jung Mong-joo away from their cause.

And in so many ways, this episode was the perfect companion piece to the last, since without it, the audience might’ve turned away from Jung Do-jeon. Not that they still can’t now, but it’s yet more evidence that this show knows exactly what it’s doing by first focusing on Bang-won’s struggle and our empathy toward him, and then by focusing on Jung Do-jeon’s side of things. Even Bang-won, who was determined to turn away from the man he wanted so badly to follow into the depths of hell not too long ago, couldn’t help but admit that he’s quite the rousing orator.

We didn’t get the same intimate glimpse into Jung Do-jeon’s inner struggle and thought processes like we did with Bang-won, which in a way, makes his actions harder to predict. What was humanizing was how he found himself genuinely lost this episode, and how he sought advice and solace from people like Boon-yi and Bang-ji. He didn’t turn to Jung Mong-joo, Lee Seong-gye, or anyone else who’s had their fingers in the land reform pie. He turned instead to the people, since in the end, it’s really all about them.

How much it really is about them is up for debate, of course, and it’s really been a joy on my end to see such lively discourse go on these past few weeks. It’s had me thinking about politics from all different angles, and how each of our dragons has been designed to be representative of a bigger group. And how no version of politics exists that can make everyone happy, no matter how hard people like Jung Do-jeon try.

So the idea that the good use of politics will be some kind of cure-all for the nation’s ills is an interesting, if not somewhat misguided notion. Jung Do-jeon acts on behalf of the people, yet he’s unwilling to give them any sort of voice in governing. Bang-won acts on behalf of himself, believing that if and when he has power, he can use it to help the people. Which of them is really in this for the greater good is yet to be determined, but in the meantime: Burn, baby, burn.

Lol, Nameless Grandma has no chill. Whst do directors say to elder-actor/actresses who can't act?

And MooHyul is adorable - first with the grunting then with the hearts in eyes. He's still like a kid and I think the moment he finds his self-determined path, he'll get his chyron.

The rest of the episode... what do I say? Everyone'll say it. It's fantastic!

Yes I agree, she is painful to watch and I usually skip her parts.

Yun Jung-Hee (Poetry) and Kim Hye-Ja (Mother) will always be my 2 favorite actresses over 60.

(Poetry and Mother are two of my favorite Korean movies of all time).

The director/writer/producer of Poetry (Lee Chang-dong) one of my fav Korean movie directors, brought Yun Jung-Hee back from retirement to headline his movie. She is still amazing even at 71 years old.

My thoughts exactly, his tendency to get swept up by women (which is naturally really sweet) is one of the things that he might be "weak" against. There is no way that he would intentionally want to hurt a girl. Sa Kwang is different from other girls, in that she is potentially very dangerous and one of the strongest warriors. I think he will have to overcome his "weakness" (again, I use this word lightly because his respect/care for women is admirable) Therefore I see Sa Kwang as Moohyul's biggest challenge to overcome ever. He may not go so far as to kill her, but to defeat her, I genuinely think that he must.

(Spoiler)
If they follow history, the current King Gongyang will be deposed and exiled by Bang-won. He will be killed afterward with his whole family.

I think Chok Sa Kwang (like any royal body-guard) will die trying to protect him.

I don't want her to die (for many reasons) but I don't see Moo-hyul taking out Bang Ji because they both survived in Tree. Chok Sa Kwang is the only other formidable opponent left in Goryeo.

Moo-hyul is the only character who made it from the beginning of SFD to the very end of TWDR. Bang Ji died before him.

i also think it was necessary and didnt mind it and it was beautifully delivered

i also dont mind that much if BY will die at the end after she fulfilled her purpose i think for some dramas its a great ending and i dontmind it

as long as her character is consistent tillthe end of the drama

0

sorry @kiara read necessary for some reason
Freud are you here?

0

there so many deaths here.. i don't want cheok sa kwang and by to die.. actually when BW killed JMJ, the LSG and JDJ deposed king gongyang and exiled him and ordered to killed him and his family..poor guy..he just want to live as an ordinary life...

0

the king is really the victim here no matter what he has no option but to die

and with all due respect to BJ & MH it will need the 2 of them to kill SG i think
it wont be just MH or BJ thats why both of them met her i think
i wonder how will MH will handle trying to kill his crush

0

i think it will be moo hyul will defeat her and get the title of the best swordsman and title of a dragon. so there will be two swordsman, BJ and MH in opposite sides.. but during when BW ascended BJ suddenly disappeared and MH will be the best swordsman in joseon without defeating BJ

0

MH will defeat Cheok sa gwang, because that girl plan to kill YBW. JMJ supported the King, so when JMJ was ordered to be killed by BW, so Cheok sa gwang thought this will be a dangerous situation for them so the king lost the support. so she plan to kill bw but Mh defeated her, he got the title of the dragon, as BW' protector..then the king was exiled and maybe learned that his lover died so he just decided to killed himself or those two decided to commit suicide and meet again in afterlife.

0

That makes sense shirayukihime.

Finally MooMyung leader revealed. Its the same as I made a guess during episode 29 recap, Yeon Hyang. I think still there are more secrets o be revealed in upcoming episodes.
I think Yi BangJi and Boon Yi are children of Yeon Hyang and Gil Sun Mi, Its just a guess but I think this was the reason Why Gil Sun Mi could not kill them during their childhood. But there is also Yooksan who did order Gil Sun Mi not to kill them.

Moo Hyul is best like he was in previous episodes, and When he did Fifth East Dragon moves it was very funny.
Now Yi BangWon is being different from he was before and I like his character most in the drama. Also it is very funny when he met Cheok SaKwang and fall in her pretty face. Girl is indeed his weakness.

Jung DoJeon Sambong did something different to make country stabilized and reformed. It was great idea and I really like him same as Yi Bangwon liked. He is really great scholar and we should learn many things from him.

Kim Myung Min and YAI both have something in common. They both won Best Actor for Blue Dragon Film Awards which is a big deal for film actors.
I don't like seeing talented actors being wasted but I this show has many characters. I hope they are done introducing new characters so there is enough screen-time for the main cast.

Yes, show! It's wonderful to have a strong ensemble cast where different actors can light up and carry different episodes (or in this case, different parts of the same episode). The only downside of having this much talent is that the show always leaves me wanting more of everyone.

I suspected she was more important to the organization than a mere servant, however I didn't think she was their leader. Come to think about it, it would be just the poetic tragedy the writers would come up with, to put her and her children on opposite sides of this war.

So Gil Sun Mi isn't the children's father. He's only in love with their mother. Poor man! Doesn't seem as if his feelings are returned.

Well what I don't understand is, it doesn't seem like the people in Nameless are from prominent families (except for Yooksan). So how come they want to keep the status quo for the rich and take from the poor? Maybe it will be revealed later, after all we do have 18 episodes to go.

Aack...my feelssss! Bang Won cried and I cried too! YAI delivers the emotion so perfectly! When he called "Boon-ah" with little smile, I smiled too like nuts.

The kiss though. I know that's Boon Yi's first kiss, so yeah... :D

I knew Yeon Yang was the leader by the time she asked Bang Won with commanding voice.

And Moo Hyul is just just sooo cute!

Chuck Sa Gwang is badass. I appreciate the fight scene so well done with all the emotions. You could see she was taking care not to kill any of the men.

This drama is rife with strong women. A fact that makes it oh so delicious to watch! It celebrates the strength of Goryeo women without emasculating the men, a rare feat to accomplish since it's a delicate balancing act.

I wonder how the Korean audiences reacted to Boon yi and Bang won's kiss scene. I mean, the man is married...still...Boon yi is the love of his life as well as his conscience and quiet voice of reason.

Can't wait to see Boon yi and Dang Sae talking to their mother. I wonder how that will go down.

This drama continually and constantly amazes me, reels me in and plays with my emotions. Just when I was fully set to despise JDJ'Ss duplicity, I found myself admiring him and enthralled by his ability to work a crowd.

5 Stars♥♥♥♥♥

And Heads, thank you so much for sticking with recapping this 50 episode drama. I'm sure it's no easy feet. Still, this drama is a thing of beauty and the weeks are whizzing by, it's already three-fifth's over and I will miss it when it is done.

i think that if JDJ would have abolished even the name king and queen as you suggested bf they would have nothing to fight about as being the wifes of ministers from the same family - maybe fights we have now in families
but being queen even a powerless one symbolize a lot and have a lot of dignity behind it
so they wouldnt , not really, be safe

I think Sambong's plan was not meant to be fully implemented in his day. It would have been a very long process. Only some parts of it worked at the time and Bang-won carried it over to his administration.

I think with their different ideologies and uncontrolled passion towards it made it difficult for them to co-exist.
Sambong obviously wasn't safe with Bang-won around and Bang-won was not safe with Sambong around.

It's like Lee Seong Gye and Jo Min Soo. One has to eliminate the other to survive. Jo Min Soo knew it was coming so he decided to strike first, unfortunately for him he was unsuccessful. Same thing with Bang-won but he was successful.

i read in soompi thread i think by homura that as time went by the system leaned towards ministry more and more and the minsters became to powerful and corrupt
and i think this is the place where a new "king" comes up
us the citizen the one to keep the ministers in check

i really really believe that although at the beginning it would have been very hard it would have migrated the ppl towards democracy much sooner

i really think it would have

0

It's possible. I don't have as much faith as you do that it would have been successful during an era of Confucianism and that rigid class system even made it more difficult.

0

i agree @kiara. it would be difficult for democracy... first they should fix the class system and abolition of slaves.. i thought that if there's new country, everything would have change bt not.. slaves and class system are still there..what made worse is the situation of the widows, married woman and women after the imjin war...I don't wanna live in a strict casted society like that. a slaves can't even work in the government and study..

0

i meant that the ppl wold have revolted much sooner
they would have got rid of the caste bf
i think that although the ministers can be corrupt they would fight one anothe and there would be room for rebellion
since th Joson era let commoners who past the tests become ministers they would be of them little by little
and a revolution can take place while the higher up fight each other - as was done in alot of places

0

JDj burned the land deeds so how about also burning the records of the slaves?? so that in the new dynasty, there will be no slaves, slaves will also enjoy the status of the commoners or work with the nobles but they were paid

0

it took 5 centuries to eliminate the caste system.. i think it was the nobles who revolted.. the nobles who fell from their status. and that time they don't know how to work or make money.. i read something about that. they call it "Gabo Reforms"..man, i really confucian country, since that country is only for yangban/literate class.

0

the "nobles" who has fallen down bc of JDJ system that nobles will lose their position if they fail their exams combined with more more commoners trying for the exams
since the system allowed for that is very much like the middle class ad growth around the world and made for the change in governing
i just think it would have happened sooner

0

slaves are a much more problematic problem
they are "wins" of war depending on the relationship with that country the position of slave is changed
also if the slaves are not pro the country they are at the can be assumed dangerous
the regard of slaves was not as human but as property it meant status and position of the warrior and country
as we know from another country in regard to slaves status it was the most hard thing for the country to do
and its different from recognized citizens of the country

0

Han Ye-Ri (Yoon Rang/Chok Sa Kwang) is a talented movie actress. I was surprised to see her here. I thought she was just doing a cameo appearance but I'm glad she is sticking around for a few more episodes.

I love this drama! It's characterisation is incredible. No major character is painted simply black or white...not even our previous villains, Hong Im Bang, LIG and GTM.

I wish that JDJ can revise the 5th rule of not letting a royal be in politics. Can't he be in politics by proving himself? Get him to take the civil exams and all the other tests that the other candidates need to take. It's really such a pity that the JDJ and BW have to end up opposite each other. If they could somehow compromise, they would make an excellent pair!

that's what i want to ask.. BW had passed the state civil examination already and was qualified as a government official..wonder why really JDJ wants to exclude him from politics.. if the answer is cause he will be part of the royal family then don't make him part of the royal.. he could somehow tell him in advance about his plans..

i agree. they are victims of their times. It's survival of the fittest.. some powerful people uses their influence and power to destroy the weak so they think if they could gain what they wanted, they maybe can change their fate and able to survive in the rotten goryeo...it's very scary. I have watch the merchant gaekju drama, and the late joseon dynasty reminds me of the waning years of goryeo. i have not experience it but i feel it very disorganize society and chaotic.. noble clans gain control the poitics, economy and the royal court so there's corruption everywhere.. people doing everything just to survive and not to be bullied by the rich

This is something that puzzles and confounds me. According to JDJ's rules of kingship, the only power the king has is to appoint the PM. He limits the king's power cos basically, one doesn't really know what kind of king he'll be and in JDJ's system, the PM holds the most power. The position is not hereditary so a 'bad' or corrupt PM will not be able to pass down the position to his son. But my burning question is, what if a bad or weak or foolish king chooses the wrong PM? A corrupt king, seeking to gain power and wealth can appoint a corrupt PM willing to do his dirty work for the sake of power. So how does this help the nation?

Burning the deeds was a heroic thing. Who wouldn't want to take credit for it? All parties benefit from it.

1. The people: eased their burdens and the taxes was lowered from an outrages 80% to 10%, (not sure if I got the numbers right). No more paying extra taxes to the nobles and private landowners.

2. The king and Poeun: increased public sentiments since he allowed it to pass.

3. Sambong and the Goryeo traitors: a huge step towards the revolution. Stabilizing the economy, ready for the new nation. Cutting the oppositions power supply.

I think it's pretty sensible that he is letting the lowly people who suffered most destroy the cause of their afflictions. I think that is why Bong Yi still believes in him. He was there with her. She is probably the only one Sambong can be honest with when it comes to her people. He realizes that the land distributions that is about to happen may not give her and her people what they really want and he is up front with her in what to expect.

I hope Sambong at least will talk Lee Seong Gye into giving them land to own as his merit subjects. They've worked so hard for it.

The land reform already passed. Lee Seong Gye kept a large amount of land to distribute to his merit subjects. They are part of his merit subjects even though they didn't exist in history.

The writers could go either way. They have the freedom to do whatever they want with their fictional characters.

0

i remember reading that the commoners didnt get their land
the writers are not following history on that?

0

they exist in the history.. BY represents those common people who wants their own land and DS and BJ represent those soldiers who fights and protect the new founders of the dynasty. but in the end they didn't get their own land.. the merit subjects are only those for those scholar officials/or the group that supports JDJ. JDJ's group become powerful in the court after lsg became the king.. and then there it is corruption again.. if they will show this, then BW's fighting against JDJ will be justfied..the scholar officials will be the root of corruption

0

@nara
The commoners weren't out fighting for their land in history like Bong Yi and her little group. She is a dragon and her people helped established Joseon. Lee Seong Gye is very much aware of their contribution.

They could go with history and Bong Yi and her people will end up disappointed or the writers can make their dreams come true with the land distribution although it's fictional. She is dragon after all even though she is fictional.

@shirayukihime

The land distribution was Lee Seong Gye's call.

0

@kiara.. they can't do that.. writers should reveal the truth even though this drama is fused with fiction.. i read it about the land distribution and the hidden lands.. but i wanna see it personally in the drama.... i am so excited to see the reactions of BW and BY about the land distribution later..

0

They can if they want.

0

@nara

Sambong said that he has Lee Shin Jeok (your fav guy) prepare something. I think he will be back soon.

I am guessing that he is calculating the land to be distributed among Lee Seong Gye's merit subjects.
I'm not giving up hope that Bong Yi and her little group will get something out of this.

The first scene with BW and BY is so sad, yet poignant. They are indeed star-crossed lovers. I re-watched the ep where BW was so frustrated with BY's reasons for not wanting to be with him...when she said that she loved him and he responded with, 'Do you want to die' is funny yet so sad. And when he pointed his finger at her, and said, 'I love you' and will do so till I die, (in lieu of this ep), I felt like dying.

I thought Boon Yi's performance was subtle, but evocative.

SSK seems tired and exhausted in her scenes nowadays. The initial spark she had in the earlier episodes is gone. It's not that she is turning out a sub par performance, by any means. She's still on point and acting well, but the live shoot system must be draining her...It is a six months project, after all. I could see her struggle to keep up with YAI, but it wasn't a big deal as Boon Yi's a stoic character.

They had no time to go home and make babies. They were with the king 24/7 most of the time.

Poor Moo-hyul didn't get to retire, he went from guarding one king to the next.

0

but isnt it assumed that GSM although being the guard of the king had a relationship with Queen Noguk(not sure about the name) maid? or something
and actually i remember that YH was supposed to be the queen maid at one point wasnt she?

0

@nara

That wouldn't have happened in the palace. Every female (from the queen to her servants) belongs to the king. Yeon Hyang was Queen Noguk's maid.

If there was some kind of relationship going on between Gil Sun Mi and Yeon Hyung, it must have been after they both left the palace.
(She was supposed to be executed for causing the queen's death).

0

so when exactly she became Nameless leader and when and where she met GSM?

0

@nara
According to a link that was posted in this thread earlier, Yeon Hyang left the palace after Princess Noguk died. I think YH was the leader of Nameless at that time already. But the organisation was having a 'civil war' with 2 factions fighting each other. She left the palace and married a civilian, from which Boon Yi and Ddang Sae came from. Yooksan managed to get her back for good by asking GSM to kill her children. Of cos, he didn't...instead he took the bodies of 2 burnt children and said that they were hers.

0

thanx @crazyahjummafan i was confused bc CY said they grew up together and both trained to be the leader but they chose YH instead of CY so i didnt really understand when exactly it all happen or i didnt understand what CY said

0

Moo-hyul was not involved in politics like most loyal guards. His loyalty is to Bang-won and not Sambong. He admires Bang-won and believes in him. Bang-won took him and his whole family. Now they have a place to live and food to eat etc.

there is more to pull them apart emotionally and
ideologically and it will be Sam-Bong who will I think
turn that connection into exceedingly more heart ache. Since BY is not a part of history as I know it, I tend to light up more when I see BW with Lady Min, I truly like her character, and her style. I wish they would show her more, she is quite an intelligent character. I look forward to seeing how BW will ultimately fulfill new path against his teacher, and I suspect he will use moves Sam-Bong used and refine them. Yes, play time is over, I suspect in time we will have new alliances formed I would like to know how this drama will end in history. Will it stop with BW's father being crowned or will it stop with around the period of "First Strife of Princes". BW would make a great king, but though he says he wants power to help others realize their dreams, I believe he is ultimately and has always been drawn to power and for him it must be absolute. (also, was it just me or did moohyul look like he was holding in laughter too while doing the demonstration grunting HAHA)

JDj is stil suspicious for me.. maybe because of nam eun and yh? sorry guys, but i don't trust JDj as long as nam eun is around esp when cy talked nam eun about bw, his expression change .. maybe he wanted to get rid bw later on after the joseon will establish.. and that second wife of lsg.. maybe this will be another reason why bw really wanted to kill them since lsg's wife and nam eun will wants him dead so he will kill them first..

Suspicious about what? There is nothing secretive about Nam Eun. He was just a Sadaebu scholar who supports the revolution.
His expression changes because Cho Young only wanted to talk to Bang-won. I think he was disappointed that she wasn't willing to make a deal with him.

I think it's because Nam Eun doesn't like BW. He is suspicious of BW - this was mentioned in an earlier episode.

right,. especially after the torture of BW in ep. 12 or 13.. He already warned JDJ. and YH even want to kill BW.. that's why those two even JDj are cautious of BW..that's must be the reason why didn't tell him about the 5 rules..it's annoying that for BW he thinks he know everything while YH, JDJ and Nam Eun act like they provided him information he need but too bad for BW he didn't know about it.. You know the feeling of betrayal and deception..the feeling of betrayal from someone you trust, you thought you sacrifice your life for a greater cause( it's a greater cause anyway) but in the end he just betrayed you..and everything you have done is just to satisfy them..but then you didn't know when are they going to turn back against you..

I prefer Ha Ryun over JDj. I like JDj's ideas and he's a genius but somehow the personality, I prefer Ha Ryun.. My favorite prime ministers are Ha ryun, Hwang Hui, and Han Myung Hoe. It starts with H!!

but at least he's not scheming.. what i hate about sambong is how he lied about the 5 rules.. if he should explain that, then they could have better talk about it. the 5 rules has the advantages and the disadvantages esp. in the 5th rule..everyone contributed to it so they should talk what's the best for the country.. but sambong hid the truth..maybe jdj and his group just want the only sole contributor of the joseon...like how they discredited bw and not included him in the merit subjects.. jDj is selfish .. that's what i think.. he cares for the country but everything was for him, in the end he and his group rule the nation...

How did he lie about something he never talked about before? The details of the plan was not mentioned before until now. We all thought it was about the revolution and creating a new country like it happened in history.
That was a twist to cause Bang-won to doubt and separate himself from Sambong.

Of course you'll love Ha Ryun because he's on your bias side.

0

I don't know where to start but the moment I saw JDJ, i feel that he is always hiding something.. and then when BW ask JDJ again, then why he didn't tell him the 5 rules? and about what he talk to JMJ? if he wanted to make LSg a king, then he should provide all the information.. but he didn't tell about the 5 rules.. he didn't provide any information to the LEE family which is very unfair esp. in the part of BW.

0

actually i didn't like Ha ryun just because he is on the BW's side.. i watch the King sejong the great, and King taejong found out that Ha Ryun hid something from him. about ha ryun accumulated so many slaves and lands and also ha ryun did something horrible with the 2 brothers of the Queen Wonkyeong , that's why king taejong ask him to resign instead of executing him (i need to clarify this information, someone just provided the historical spoilers) that's why I lost my admiration for him. but I like him now in the SFD ....there's something about him that differs him from JDJ..

0

Ha Ryun was all about saving himself. Bang-won saved his life because his scheming helped him sit on the throne.

Same reason why he couldn't depose Queen Wongyeong. When it comes down to it, she was a key player in helping him obtained the throne.

0

Do you think that Bang-won announced to his followers that he would not share power with anyone once he becomes the king?

The thing I love most about this writer is that he/she loves ALL his characters! This makes for rounded characters and great ensemble acting. Everyone matters, and the writer never lets them stay too long out of any scene.

I keep looking forward to Po Eun's death on the bridge. But am also looking forward --in the most painful way-- to the battle Moo Hyul mmust have with Sa Gwang. That will be heart-breaking to watch. Moo Hyul will be forever changed.

Thanks for the recap.

This drama just continues to churn out epic episodes.
So good when LBW admits that he still admires JDJ,
I am really impressed with Yoo Ah In's acting skills.
Only 18 more episodes to go and I am already dreading the ending of this awesome sageuk.

I'm not getting this Nameless people and their role in stabilizing the nation. Where the heck were they when Yuan took over or when the Red Turbans terrorized Goryeo? Where were they when the Japanese pirates infiltrated the streets of Goryeo?

I think what they've done so far in the name of stabilizing the country does not make any freaking sense. They are more like a self righteous terrorist group who used and kills their own people.

Nameless was created during the 3 kingdom era (Shilla) by Bidam (died 647). Yuan (Mongolian empire) exited later from 1271–1368 during the Goryeo era.

I'm still kind of confused about their cause.

I must say the scene of Yeon Hyang stabbing Gil Sae Mi's chest where the heart is, and he just accepting it calmly, is so badass! Seems Boon Yi got that spunky and leader character from her mother. I really wonder how Yeon Hyang could go along with the idea that a stabilized country is only possible if people like Lee In Gyrom rule the country. Can't she see that her children suffer and were the victims because of people like him?

Also, I wish Sak Gwang & Moohyul fall in love to each other.

Under his own rules, the king's only role is to appoint a prime minister. Yet JDJ already has plan to dictate who he wants to be the new PM already. So who is the dictator here?

If JDJ has a different vision than those he is partnering with, he has an obligation to be forthright or part ways. Otherwise he is using others to pursues his own agendas.

I don't have a problem with Bangwon wanting power to do good. He is very much same as JDJ, with the key difference is he didn't use Sambong, he trusted Sambong. At least he is not hypocritical.

The check and balance system is a good mechanism to prevent dictatorship. It is the process of implementing such system that is all critical. The end cannot justify the means.

We got caught up in the story to forget the same land reform "ideals" of more recent history when communist states taking over nations. In the name of the people.

But this is a very interesting drama that really lays bare one's ideals against another and this is "politics". The worst kind of politics is one where you believe so much in doing the right thing.

im sorry but dictating the governing system - doesnt mean that he is a dictator
only absolute ruler is a dictator
its the definition
if you dictate that only ministers will rule you are not a dictator since its not power of one man
and democracy learning from past mistakes took out any party that has an absolute ruler agenda
in most developed and developing countries

I am not saying he is dictator in drafting the structure of the new government. He spoke of the role of the new king is to appoint the prime minister, yet he is the person to ask Po Eun to be the prime minister. So in that act, he is undermining the new king's role.

I am not Korean to understand Sam Bong's ideology through real historical artifacts. I only see what is shown in this drama to conclude.

It feels like this horse has been beaten to death.

Lee Seong Gye and Samdong both agreed that Poeun would be a very important part of the new nation. He was the most qualified to be the prime minister. Not only because he was intelligent (he passed all the civil exams with flying colors surpassing his teacher Lee Saek) but he was well respected in Goryeo's court and abroad (China and Japan). He was the best diplomat in Goryeo. He had morals and he was upright.

If you think that was dictatorship on Sambong's part then I'd be interested in what you would describe Bang-won's system of one man ruling with absolute power.

Sambong's was planning on a Constitutional Monarchy run by a capable prime minister like Poeun. Lee Seong Gye and Poeun's friendship goes way back to his years on the battlefield. He was elated at the possibility that his good friend might join them in creating the new nation.

Sambong didn't live long enough to push and implement his whole plan. Bang-won took the throne and rule with absolute power. The country advanced through his reign and he paved the way for his son Sejong to rule in a more peaceful time.

Both Sambong and Bang-won needed/used people to help accomplish their goals.

If you are looking for faults in Sambong's plan then you will find some because it wasn't perfect. Same way with Bang-won and his system of governing.

Bang Won didnt blame his teacher to hide "5 rules" from him. He knew politicians never open all their hearts to others. He hid a lot of thinkings to himself too.

He was disappointed because that "5 rules" wouldn't let him do things he wanted to do. He was upset with Sam Bong because JDJ wouldn't give him a place in the world they were fighting for.

That's why he decided to go his own way.
