Odds and Ends: Stars for everyone!
by javabeans
javabeans: It’s been a while since we’ve done an Odds and Ends! Hm, I wonder why… it can’t be because we haven’t been doing anything lately.
girlfriday: We do… stuff! We just have to stop talking to each other in regular life, so that we have things to say in Odds and Ends. Maybe I’ll just stop speaking to you from now on.
javabeans: And this is to be MORE productive? I think there is a flaw in your reasoning.
girlfriday: I never said it was logical.
javabeans: Maybe it’s more that we have been doing so much work on behind-the-scenes stuff that we’ve been too tired to add to our plate. Most nights I go to bed only because I can’t keep my eyes open in front of my computer.
girlfriday: That could be all the YouTube cat videos.
javabeans: AND ALSO WORK. There is quite a lot of it, even if you can’t tell on the front end. We’re working on stuff, we swear!
girlfriday: For instance, you might have noticed the stars at the stop of each recap and wondered how they got there.
javabeans: The star ratings are a new feature we’re trying out, and you can rate drama episodes by leaving a comment, at which point a pop-up window will direct you to vote. You can only vote once per episode, but the good news is, there are a ton of episodes on Dramabeans. Go nuts!
girlfriday: Oh, and just to be clear, it’s a rating for the episode, rather than the recap.
javabeans: Yes, if the recap sucks, you can just tell us in words. The stars are for the TV show itself.
girlfriday: Let us know if there are any bugs or if you have trouble voting (be specific about what browser and OS you’re using, and we’ll try to fix any problems that arise). Hopefully it’ll be a fun new feature that you guys can play around with, because yunno, it’s fun to grade things and give out gold stars.
javabeans: Yes, and hopefully we’ll be able to keep it around for a long while. I’m always sad when a fun feature starts creating problems with the site and needs to be disabled (RIP, pretty thumbs), but we’d like to keep the stars around!
girlfriday: That reminds me, I should go to old recaps of City Hunter and give it all of the stars!
javabeans: Oh, I should go to all the anger-inducing endings and give them bad ratings. Sadly, angrily giving someone one star doesn’t feel quite as satisfying as giving an awesome show five stars. You can’t give a show zero stars because then you just didn’t vote, so one star has to be your message. “Feel the wrath of my one starrrr!”
girlfriday: Ooooo, buuuuurrrn. Way to show that show! *eyeroll*
javabeans: Fine, maybe it’s a lame statement. I’m still going to one-star the hell out of Bad Guy and Big and Mary Stayed Out All Night, though.
girlfriday: Okay, can’t really argue with those.
javabeans: But maybe I’ll be nice and start with the love. I have more of that to give anyway.
girlfriday: Race you to the Healer page!
javabeans: Already beat you to it.

Stars galore for all the Twenty again episodes! And one star-nig the heck out of Bad Guy! That drama ending almost ruined me! I rarely watch dramas live anymore cuz of the awful ending burn. I don't think I've hated an ending more after loving the rest of it. Thankful that my past experience helped me wait for the whole drama reviews to be posted for "Marry Me if You Dare/ Mirae's Choice" because I would've probably flipped tables if I wasted my life on that one! Looking forward to giving out love stars!

Today when posted on the "Running Man" thread I noticed the pop-up "STARS" rating and so I started to fill in 4 stars for this episode. But as soon as I put one, it left. (Now I know, only pick the place holder of the stars you wish to assign. But when I did it this morning it looks like I was "panning" the running man episode. And actually, I jjinja liked it.
Still it's a good idea, now that I know what to do. Thanks for letting us rate the shows.

hmmm . .. I like the rating idea but it would be nice to be able to rate without leaving a comment. I just left a comment on an answer me 1997 ep saying "leaving this comment so I can rate" which doesn't seem helpful for the comment section. (Don't worry - I won't do that for others.)

Is it simply to increase the number of comments?

@TG it's probably because it makes it harder for it to be abused. It adds one extra step to the process so people who just want to sneakily increase or decrease an episode a million times have more work to do. Also, it encourages conversation, especially for currently airing shows! :)

@Mindy: I agree with TG; I suppose that cookies can take care of tracking votes; and if someone wants to cheat with the vote count, they can just comment "+1" ten times.
I myself tend to watch episodes long after they have aired, so at that point it doesn't seem to make much sense to add a comment when most conversations are over. But I wish I could at least drop by and add my two cents. The average star rating is also a good way to decide whether to give a show a try, without looking through hundreds of individual comments...

Same here. Most of the times I watch the dramas that have already finished because then I know if they are worth watching or not. Maybe like TG I will comment “leaving this comment so I can rate” but add my own opinion about the show.

If there is a show I want to give half or a quarter a star, the first on my list will be Lie To Me. How I watched that drama till the end, I will never know but never has my laptop come close to harm as much as it did during that time...all at my hands.
Wish there were recaps of A Man Called God on dramabeans because I would give each episode 3 stars only because Song Il-kook went on to father the most adorable triplets ever.

Loving the star ratings!! I'll definitely be dishing them out over the weekend. But I was just wondering over the disparity between the 4 and 5 stars. Should 4 stars come with plot holes so glaring that you have to squint to cover them? I'd like to think that giving an 4 stars is close to 5, just with minor niggles included. And that doesn't necessarily have to do with the plot. Just my two cents. Thank you for the post! Always love a good update on Odds and Ends.

I actually have a comment regarding the recaps.
I think it will be better if recap screenshots expressed more action. Currently, most of the screenshots are mainly faces of the main heroes in all kinds of expressions (for example, She Was Pretty ep. 8). The problem is, these screens are not helpful in restoring the plot, which is the main purpose of the recap.
I've started reading recaps at DB four years ago, and I remember if I was wondering whether to start a new drama or if I was just getting interested in the recap, I could look through the screenshots and it was already enough to restore the main events in the plot. If you try to do the same now (even for action-packed Yong-pal), you will mostly see main leads constantly looking surprised, but in different locations.
I think it will be great if screenshots became more informative. For example, in She Was Pretty Episode 8 recap photos of Sung Joon shouting and Hye Jin looking at him, but if there was a screen of the photo studio and/or torn dress, you could at least get the idea about location or the reason of his behavior.

I'm scared of spoilers; it happens often enough with the opening lines of the recap, those that you can see even if you do not click on it. I keep being able to follow the plot of shows that I haven't started watching (dear recappers, could you please keep it as vague as possible on those opening lines?) -- same about screencaps; sometimes I scroll down to the general commentary, just to see if the recapper liked it as a whole; I don't mind it if the photos do not give away the actual plot as I scroll down. But I guess I am a minority in that particular habit...

Ok, call me a little crazy... went back and gave a star rating to the final episode of every drama I could reasonably remember. (Did consult my drama database for an overall impression reminder on a few). Wish "Life is Beautiful" could have been on the list to give a star rating... I really loved that drama... even if it is one of the long episode length family dramas.
Also, couldn't help but give 5 stars to every episode of Personal Taste and Coffee Prince... I've watched those through lots of times now ... just to re-live the squee!

I like the idea. I was wondering if at the end of the drama, all the stars are combined to give it a final total rating? There are a lot of shows I loved until the last four episodes, and then was bitterly, angrily disappointed. Ooo, how I would have wished to take any stars previously given away. This sort of problem makes me wish the stars were just at the last episode, so the ratings would reflect how we liked it overall. But then, I rely on you for that, dear JB and GF. I like your pure, uncompromised opinion on shows, and hope you won't be TOO swayed by what we in the peanut gallery think!

I recently read the recap for Big's last episode and couldn't help laughing at the community's collective freak out about the ending. It was literally nothing but 400-500 angry, dissapointed comments. I don't think I've seen anything like it since!! I so wish Gong Yoo hadn't been in it because it has obviously turned him off kdramas *sigh*
The star rating is really awesome and came at the perfect time because I just started catching up on kdramas I've been wanting to watch or finish. Right now, it's I Remember You and Healer (trying to finally get past the 4th episode!)
So sorry to hear the like feature was buggy! Hope the star rating is here for good!

@javabeand and girlfriday
There is a loophole in your rating mechanism. I understand that you have to post a comment to be allowed to rate. However, if the name and emailID fields are left blank, the comment is not posted (throws an error) but the rating box still pops up allowing you to rate it.
This can be a workaround for folks wanting to rate things without being forced to leave comments. Its up to the powers that be whether or not to close this loophole.
