Han Ye-seul in talks to headline JTBC’s Madam Antoine
by girlfriday
Casting is underway for cable network JTBC’s clinical-psychology-medical-romantic-comedy (wow that’s a mouthful) Madam Antoine: An offer is currently out to Han Ye-seul (Birth of a Beauty) to star, and she’s in final negotiations, which sounds like it’s pretty much a lock. Despite the genre mashup sounding weird, I guess it’s not unfamiliar territory now, after It’s Okay, It’s Love and Heart to Heart. It’s just… does this have to be an ongoing sub-genre? Because isn’t dating your shrink still considered, yunno, wrong?
Granted, it could be a drama about a bunch of doctors dating each other, so we’ll wait and see on that front. The new series comes from PD Kim Yoon-chul of Could We Marry and Could we Love, and writer Hong Jin-ah of The King 2 Hearts and Mi-rae’s Choice. I’m so split down the middle with her, because I loved one drama and tore my hair out over the other. One guess as to which is which.
Madam Antoine will be a romantic comedy about a clinical psychologist that plans to explore a variety of emotions concerning love. It promises to tell relatable, universal stories about the inner pain that we all carry. Han Ye-seul is up for the leading role, but there are no details yet for the character she’s going to play.
I like Han Ye-seul well enough and I’m glad she’s made a successful comeback to dramaland post-Myung-wol the Spy, but I wonder how believable she’d be as a psychologist (that is, if she’ll even play one in this drama). She’s great in the fluffy, bubbly rom-coms a la Birth of a Beauty, which seem to fit her real-life personality really well, so maybe this drama will veer into more comedic territory than I first imagined. Fingers crossed that they really mean to make it a rom-com.
Madam Antoine will follow D-Day on Fridays and Saturdays beginning late November.

I really liked her in BOAB. If they get a great male lead I'll try it.

After Birth of a Beauty - I don't care if I never see this actress again. How did she ever make it. She cannot act and she is not even pretty.

Good thing then that no one cares for what you think.
Wow! Such negativity.
You know, there are substantial & subtle ways to get your opinion across. And saying she's not pretty only exposes your inferiority complex.
Please be more careful.

I hate being a party pooper but I recall lots and lots (and lots!) of hate comments about a few other actresses on this very blog (I've read worst about two or three in particular) not to mention idol-actors, whom almost everyone of us trashes easily given the opportunity. So, let's live and let live and "let him that is without sin cast the first stone"...

Granted she's not such a great actress, but I don't see how someone can she's not pretty.

Me too! Have to say, I looked hard to see the beauty. She's not really in the top 100 for me in terms of Kdrama beauties and she acting as a raving beauty in BOAB - a drama which I loved (for the male costar). She's not that great in acting either. These things just must be said, sometimes. No real hate involved, just O-PI-NI-ON.

She is pretty. Even my dad that doesn't watch Korean drama saw one of her older drama when we were watching said she's pretty.
And this is coming from a man that hardly compliments anyone except his wife (but not in front of hers, of course).

Dear Mary, I haven't seen her in many roles, so I can't say if she is a good actress or not.
On the other hand, I liked her a lot as the grumpy and princessy straight woman in the midst of all the madness happening around her in "Fantasy Couple" in 2006. She was drop-dead gorgeous then as she was in 2004 in "Nine Tailed Fox", where she shined for me as the best (the only highlight I remember) acting in that misery of a Drama.
So to recapitulate: I consider her a pretty nice actress so far (not my favorite) but really beautiful.
Anyways I would love to put her in a really good role where she can shine as an actress so she can show more range. I don't have any clue if she has the acting muscle to make a difficult role like Ms. Park Bo-Young in "Oh my Ghostess", but I would like her to prove herself she can!.
Anyway, I love Ms. Han Ye-Seul for that riot of a Drama that was "Fantasy Couple" :) .

I loved Can We Get Married but Can We Love sadly crashed and burned halfway through (although imo it was mostly the writer's fault). I hope Mirae's Choice's writer can redeem herself with this, I want to watch a good romcom. I liked Han Ye Seul in the two dramas with her that I've watched, so I'm fine with this casting.

I wonder how bad Mirage's Choice is ? Seems like the worst nightmare ever for those who watched it ?
Really like HYS in Fantasy Couple & as an Ahjumma in BOAB. I may watch this, but the male lead is Sung Joon who so-so to me haha okay then

I'm currently watching Fantasy Couple (aka Couple or Trouble) for the first time. Regarding Mirae's Choice (aka Marry Him If You Dare) I'm probably in the minority here but I don't regret watching it. I have a love–hate relationship for MHIYD. Ha, it's a painful love. I appreciate what the drama was trying to achieve (aigoo 20/20 hindsight...same choice vs. different choice?) but it's hard to ignore the missed opportunities and areas where it failed at in execution.

I agree. Had Mi-rae's Choice been on a cable channel, meaning more freedom from formulaic writing and ratings (and with a more likeable actor as the leading character, that's just me though), it would have been remembered, if not as a big hit in numbers, at least as a cult classic that lifted K-dramaland out of overused clichés. I keep thinking of that every time this series pops up in a conversation...

If the psychiatrist/psychologist ends up breaking up with the patient, it will probably absolutely devastate him/her.
I know a person with mental health issues; if he ended up in a relationship with his doctor who then dumped him...I'm scared to imagine what would happen.
I really really wish Kdramas would stop mixing mental health issues and romance.

It would be too easy for an unethical doctor to manipulate his/her patients.

Thanks...but then is it okay to have love between a physician (not a psychiatrist) and his or her patient?

NO WAY! A co-dependent relationship plus romance is a big "faut-pas". Relationships are by definition "equal partnerships" and a doctor-patient one is not, hence a very, very dysfunctional plus the most unromantic romance I can always think of (but not the most unloving one)...

Maybe because it's considered unprofessional. If a doctor gets romantically involved with his/her patient, it might cloud her judgement during the treatment during treatment process.

My eyes rolled so far back in my head from reading "clinical-psychology-medical-romantic-comedy," I had a hard time setting them right. Enough with the hyphenates, dramaland!

But why?? It's such a hilarious trend...I've never seen anywhere else so many genres combined in only one project. K-dramaland is so "avant-garde" when it comes to descriptions! Hyphenates are the best...

She may not be the best actress, but she can act. But i just can picture her in rom-com, not in melo or others. Can we hope she reunite with Eric again? :)

Agreed, not to mention I think she's one of those actresses that has quite a unique charm and there's always a spark in her eyes, so she's fun to watch. However, this seems to be pretty different from her usual roles so I'm curious to see how it'll be.

I liked her more in rom-coms. I just hope they find her a really good paring in this one.
Fantasy couple aka COUPLE OR TROUBLE is still my favorite of hers!

If Sung Joon gets this, I hope they have a decent kiss or better yet, more mature romance. Birth of a Beauty infuriated me with the adults acting like dumb teenagers. I thought Han Ye Seul was gorgeous in it, but I couldn't get over the childish attitudes.
Sung Joon needs a good drama role. I enjoyed High Society, but Park Hyungsik stole a lot of scenes. He's capable of a lead. I LOVED him in INR3, so give me some of that back.

She was really good in Will It Snow for Christmas. i think she suits melo really well, playing the sad vulnerable type. Or playing comical villain like in Fantasy Couple. I actually don't like her in BoaB.
