Moon Geun-young, Kim Jae-wook confirm SBS’s Village

SBS’s upcoming Village is on a casting spree, with a slew of additions to the cast being made in quick succession. Heading the list is Moon Geun-young (Goddess of Fire Jung-yi), who has confirmed taking the lead role in the mysterious drama about a seemingly peaceful, crime-free village that is rocked when an unknown corpse is discovered.

(Note: The drama now goes by The Village: Secret of Achiara, where Achiara is the name of the town, although it’s still reportedly just a working title.)

We did previously hear of Shin Eun-kyung (Oh My Ghostess) being cast to play an elegant art gallery director, and now the drama will also feature Kim Jae-wook (Age of Feeling), Jang Hee-jin (Scholar Who Walks the Night), Lee Yeol-eum (High School King of Savvy), and child actress Ahn Seo-hyun (Gold Rainbow, Dummy Mommy). Not too shabby.

Moon Geun-young’s lead character will be a language instructor who becomes the key figure in uncovering the secret of the corpse. We aren’t told how, but the description makes it sound as though she will actively be investigating the curious case of the long-buried body that nobody was searching for or knew about. I’d love for this show to be a better showcase of her abilities than her recent dramas (I loved her in Cinderella’s Sister, for instance, when she got to be dark and conflicted and dynamic), and am encouraged that it sounds like a meaty project.

I’m also excited to hear about Kim Jae-wook making his drama comeback, and am crossing my fingers that he’ll also get more acting this time around; he was dropped from Age of Feeling pretty early on, and while I liked his character in Who Are You, what I wouldn’t have done to allow him to speak a few lines in that show! He’ll play an art instructor with the looks of a refined artist and a free spirit that makes him popular among his female students. (I’d totally forgotten that he and Moon Geun-young worked together before, though maybe you won’t blame me when I remind you that it was in the muddled rom-com Mary Stayed Out All Night. I’ll hope for better results this time.)

Jang Hee-jin, Lee Yeol-eum, Ahn Seo-hyun

Jang Hee-jin will play an instructor at an art academy, whose character has a sexy, mysterious aura. She was the secret mistress to the town’s most powerful man, but because she’s an outsider, her sudden disappearance one day prompts no interest. Still, the village “experiences change through events connected to her.” That’s a really vague way to sound mysterious, and I wonder if she’ll be that corpse, or if the description is just meant to make us wonder.

Lee Yeol-eum plays a high schooler with vague dreams of being an idol singer, though her everyday life is spent without much thought, just having fun. Deep down, though, she harbors pain about growing up without a father and in difficult circumstances.

Child actress Ahn Seo-hyun will be playing a bit older than her actual age—she’s in fifth grade in real life, but her character is a middle schooler—and will take on a character who started to see strange things at the age of five, which earned her the reputation for having supernatural powers. Her ability waned afterward, and in the present day she’ll become Moon Geun-young’s sidekick in seeking out the truth.

Village plans to hold its script reading later this month and will begin filming in September. It’ll follow Yong-pal in the Wednesday-Thursday slot and will begin its 16-episode run in October.

EXCITED FOR MGY COMEBACK DRAMA!!!

Hope Kim Jae Wook isn't the male lead though... He has same vibe with Sung Joon and Nam Joo Hyuk. DramaGod please make my early feeling is wrong. I love him! He's hot! And have Japanese vibe of actor, Coffee Prince all the way!

And Achiara sounds like Japanese town too O.O

If you're comparing him to Nam Joo-hyuk and Sung Joon because of their acting skill, rest assured - this guy is actually a good actor and had great chemistry with Moon Geun-young in Mary Stayed Out All Night (yeah the drama was terrible but everyone's acting was good).

Hi ! Maybe unrelated, but I lost count about the disaster-hospital drama that previously announced lead by Jung So-Min as a nurse.

I read so many update abt new upcoming drama, including Village, but how abt that drama? Is that postponed to be airing?

I think KJW was really good in the Bad Guy along with Kim Nam Gil.

Is there a chance for it to be a little funny? I still can't help but compare it to Once Upon a Time in Saengchori.
Though I have no complaints with this cast and writer! I'm glad Yongpal's follower has a lot of potential.

I was already interested in the show but it really upped with the addition of both Moon Geun Young and Kim Jae Wook. Fun fact: I was actually rooting for his character in Mary Stayed Out All Night. I still remember how he would hold practice conversations with himself. So I hope his part is BIG here. BIG. Talk all the lines. Every episode.

Anyway, this town sounds kind of refined (lots of characters in the art biz). So, I wonder what will happen. I liked "The Village" for the title, though. It was ominous, but they have a lot of time to come up with something better, I think.

Happpy to see Moon finally pick a drama.

This show feels like Twin Peaks and Jang Hee-jin's character sounds like the Laura Palmer of this show.

I'm going to check it out for the ladies. Hope it's going to be good. Any show with supernatural elements in it makes me worry.

I've said before that Moon and Go Hyun-jung would make the perfect daughter mother in a drama or movie. Two daesang award winners who resemble each other.

I could see it.....and mother-daughter pairings would be great because we so rarely get to see Korean actresses share a screen equally.

(I wonder if one day we'll get to see Sohn Ye-jin and Kim So-hyun......the resemblance is so uncanny, I can't)

Ooh, this is sounding better and better. I hope it will be similar to Top of the Lake, with a strong actress whose character drives the plot. I loved TotL's realistic-but-creepy mood.

Now PLEASE let the script be good and not a hideous mess like MGY's last drama.

And please let Kim Jae-wook be the lead, I adore Jang Geun-seok but she and KJW were so shippable in MSOAN.... and he's actually a solid actor.

Seems like Jae Wook had some bad luck in the last few dramas (well, at least Age of Innocence/Feeling; the non-speaking ghost role probably didn't give his career much of a boost either). I am looking forward to seeing him on screen again. (Loved him as the "waffle guy" in Coffee Prince.)

if you want to see him play a good role you should definitely watch him in "Bad guy" he plays an arrogant, childish and abused character with serious issues similar to Jo in sung's in 'what happened in bali' the drama is a fail but it's worth watching just for his character.

I like the idea of making a high school girl Moon geun young' sidekick. Beside the leads it could be an interesting OTP. Well I'm no even sure there will be any time for a love story here. Anyway the drama sounds interesting. It could be another hit for Sbs in this timeslot after Yong-pal.
