Mask: Episode 11

The bigger they are, the harder they fall. Seok-hoon spends this episode off-balance as he tries to re-establish the control he once had over Ji-sook, but she’s in no mood to be obedient any longer. And when Ji-sook fights back, she pulls no punches, though she needs to be careful not to push Seok-hoon too far. But she’s got an ace that gives her the upper hand, and a husband who is coming over to her side, and finally there’s hope that she can get out of this situation in one piece.

EPISODE 11: “Game of Lies”

Ji-sook shocks everyone, not least Min-woo himself, by walking into the middle of the shareholders’ voting session and introducing herself as Min-woo’s wife, Seo Eun-ha. She claims that the crushed sleeping pills found in his secret room were actually hers, and Seok-hoon looks as if he could chew nails.

She goes on to say that she’s not here as a wife, but as a shareholder herself, and that she’s concerned that if he’s dismissed her shares’ value will drop. Brilliant. Her confident air convinces the entire room — except for Min-woo, who drags her out to the hallway. He accuses her of pitying him, but she simply tells him that she did it because she’s his wife.

Mi-yeon watches Seok-hoon as he sits in the board room after the vote, remembering his triumphant expression when the crushed pills were found. She finally starts putting the clues together, that her husband probably had something to do with all this.

Ji-sook elaborates on her story in private with the family, claiming that she’s been treated for depression in the past and she hid her pills out of worry that she’d run out. Stepmom points out the flaw in her story, that Min-woo never lets anyone in that room, not even the maids, so how did she have access? Min-woo says that he accidentally left the door open, backing up Ji-sook.

Stepmom later talks with Mi-yeon and Seok-hoon, and they wonder when Min-woo and Ji-sook became so close. Unable to comprehend that they might actually care for each other, she decides that Min-woo and Ji-sook have some sort of deal. But Mi-yeon focuses on the pills hidden in the book, finding that the most strange detail.

Min-woo is dying to ask Ji-sook why she’s helping him so much and what her big secret is, and whether someone is threatening her, but he keeps their private conversation to trivial things. She sees right through him and answers his unspoken question that she did hide the pills in his secret room, so she was only telling the truth that they were hers.

She says he did nothing wrong and that’s why she defended him, and he asks if she would have done the same if he had done something wrong. Did she defend him because she’s his wife and it’s her duty, or because of something more like love? He’s so hopeful and vulnerable in this moment, it’s killing me.

Sadly, Ji-sook tells him gently that she can never love him, and apologizes. But she does promise to prove to people that he’s not a dangerous person, and though he can’t quite hide his disappointment, Min-woo accepts it.

Mi-yeon declines Seok-hoon’s offer of a drink, which prompts him to ask if she’s showing any signs of pregnancy. She admits to headaches and nausea lately, but she’s more interested in talking about lies. She wonders how often he tells lies, saying that it feels like they’re living in a game, and wonders if it’s the good liar or the bad liar who has the advantage.

Ji-sook watches Min-woo sleep that night, and reaches out to very gently touch his hair. She draws back and goes to bed, and Min-woo opens his eyes, having been aware she was there the whole time.

He barely speaks to her the next morning, but when she sees him take out his pills and remembers the doctor telling her to make sure he takes them, Ji-sook deliberately bumps Min-woo’s arm so that the pills all go flying. Oh darn, now they’re all dirty and have to be thrown out.

Ji-sook commits to her Eun-ha roleplay by fussing at a maid for breaking Stepmom’s favorite vase, but when she takes the maid aside to punish her, instead she tells her not to worry about it. Her kindness and understanding seem to affect the maid.

At the office, the Gossip Trio all crow that they knew Min-woo wouldn’t be fired, and swear to keep the secret that Ji-sook is his wife since they only know that because they eavesdropped. But they’re all deep-bows and overly solicitous to her, and she has to beg them not to treat her different.

Ji-sook asks for something more than just busy work, since she prefers to be useful. Min-woo puts her in charge of a new product, and takes her to the department store to do recon for advertising. Of course he claims he was totally going there anyway.

He turns on the radio, and it’s Awkward Time when a sexy song comes on, (though Ji-sook looks like she’d barely holding in laughter). He changes to a talk show, but a caller complaining of having a fight with her husband reminds them both of their little tiff this morning. Min-woo turns off the radio, but then grumpily says that of course it was all the husband’s fault. Again I ask, how are you so cute??

Ji-sook says the wife was obviously butting into the husband’s business, and they argue about it until Min-woo sucks his teeth at her back-talk, and tells her to text in to the show that it was the husband’s fault. Of course Ji-sook does the exact opposite, and with a smirk on her face. Hee.

At the store, Ji-sook sees an employee massaging her sore legs, and remembers when she did the same from being on her feet all day. Seok-hoon pops up to quote Napoleon that the uniform makes the man, saying that she must not like the uniform he picked out for her. He’s very unhappy that she’s not going along with his plans, and asks how she intends to fix this.

Ji-sook snaps that a person shouldn’t wear clothes that don’t fit, and Seok-hoon fires back that you don’t always get to choose what you wear. He repeats that she’ll wear what he chooses for her, but she says that from now on she’ll choose for herself.

She says he should be curious to see how she’ll clean up her mess, just like she’s curious how he’ll clean up his. She gives Seok-hoon a USB and tells him to watch the video on it, and think over whether he wants to reactivate Eun-ha’s bank accounts.

Mi-yeon shows up to work sick as a dog, so when Min-woo talks to her privately about her suspicion of the people around her, she’s barely paying attention. She asks if he’s not also curious about Seok-hoon and Eun-ha/Ji-sook’s relationship, and tells him that they’re what he thinks they are.

She means lovers, but Min-woo asks if Ji-sook is indebted to Seok-hon in some way, or if possibly Seok-hoon has something on her. Mi-yeon agrees they should look into her husband, and see if he’s embezzling or planning to buy extra shares in the company.

The video on the USB turns out to be CCTV footage of Seok-hoon administering the injection to Jung-tae and telling him he’ll be dead soon. Seok-hoon looks gratifyingly horrified, and he’s too shocked to form words for a moment when Min-woo lets himself into his office.

He gathers his wits and sits to talk with Min-woo, only to find himself on the defensive when Min-woo says that he knows the drugs planted in his room, coinciding with the shareholders’ vote to remove him, weren’t a coincidence. He asks who would want to do that to him, and Seok-hoon boldly says that he would.

He’s not admitting fault, only that he understands why Min-woo would suspect him, and asks what he can do to make Min-woo trust him. Min-woo says that he can’t, and he’ll continue to doubt Seok-hoon, then reminds him that whatever happened in the past, Ji-sook is his wife now.

After Min-woo leaves, Seok-hoon smashes the USB in a fit of anger, and is caught in the act when Min-woo comes back in to get the cell phone that he left behind. Min-woo glances at the crushed USB and without changing his expression, just says that he’s not a fool. When he leaves again, Seok-hoon makes a call and reactivates Eun-ha’s accounts.

Ji-sook’s mother is still reluctant to spend money on treatments, but Ji-hyuk and Dad remind her that she promised, and ignore her eyerolling while they happily plan menus that include healthy foods. Director Shim breaks up their fun, but he’s not there to demand money today. He woefully announces that he won’t be asking them for money ever again, because he’s been diagnosed with a terminal illness. He’s turning over a new leaf, and apologizes for everything.

Of course, his whole contrite speech was a script given to him by Ji-sook, and she’d even ordered him to get on his knees in front of her family. He tries to threaten her but she said she won’t give him any more money if he doesn’t, and his greed wins out. But once they leave, Director Shim brainstorms ways to use Ji-sook’s new situation to get more money out of her.

New massage chairs are delivered to the department store lounge for the employees, and the food in the cafeteria is suddenly much higher quality. Ji-sook’s friends remember that day when they all pretended to be chaebols and she’d fantasized about taking charge of the cafeteria.

It turns out that Ji-sook knew there would probably be a recording of Jung-tae’s death, because he had a habit in high school of bringing girls to his place and secretly filming them. She’d gone to his home that night to look for a camera, and had found a watch oddly placed in a flower arrangement. The watch had a secret camera inside, and she’d found the recording of Seok-hoon killing him.

Mi-yeon suffers Ji-sook’s new status as the golden girl of the office, but not without a lot of glares and eyerolling, especially when she sees Ji-sook’s phone light up with a call from Seok-hoon. Ji-sook steps out with a work-related excuse, but Mi-yeon knows better.

Min-woo still hasn’t looked at the results of the fingerprint analysis, and Chang-soo is optimistic that they’ll prove Ji-sook didn’t open his safe. Min-woo tells him to get rid of the results without looking, but then Mi-yeon tells him that Ji-sook is about to meet with Seok-hoon. Min-woo refuses to go check out what’s happening, simply stating that Ji-sook is his wife (implying that he trusts her).

Mi-yeon follows Ji-sook to Seok-hoon’s building, where Director Shim is also hanging out looking for information on her. Shim records Ji-sook and Seok-hoon’s meeting, where Seok-hoon says that if that video comes out, he’ll take her down with him.

That doesn’t scare Ji-sook, since then at least all the lying will be over. Seok-hoon asks what she wants, and she tells him to leave her family alone. He’s also to stop his attempts to put Min-woo in a mental hospital. She doesn’t care if he wants to take over SJ Group, she just forbids him to use this tactic.

She shows Seok-hoon the watch with the hidden camera. He asks how he knows there’s not another copy, and she asks how she knows he’ll leave her family alone. He agrees to trust each other even though they both know it’s lies, but reminds her that the moment that video gets out, her lie will be revealed as well.

When Ji-sook leaves the building, Shim’s lackey pulls the fire alarm and Shim snatches the watch right out of Seok-hoon’s hand. Shim doesn’t get far, as Scar intercepts him outside and bodyslams him to the ground, causing the watch to go flying. Nobody sees Mi-yeon pick it up amongst all the confusion.

Papa Choi calls in the maid who claimed to have seen Min-woo crushing his pills, the same one who broke the vase earlier, and she repeats her story. It doesn’t line up with Ji-sook’s claim that the pills are hers, and he asks the maid if Ji-sook is lying, or if she is. Remembering Ji-sook’s kindness, the maid looks as though she may crack, though we don’t see her response.

At dinner that night, Mi-yeon is flaunting a new watch, and says she picked it up when a stupid person dropped it. She says she’s planning to return it, but she’s not ready yet. Besides, she’s not entirely sure who the true owner is.

Min-woo is the only one who doesn’t know the significance of the watch — but he’s not stupid, and he asks Mi-yeon if this has anything to do with her following Ji-sook and Seok-hoon today. She tells him that his wife gave it to her husband, so it must belong to him.

At the same time, Ji-sook is calling Seok-hoon stupid for losing the watch, and tells him to fix the situation as she’s too busy to worry about it. She shows her contempt for Seok-hoon, saying that he seemed so frightening when she met him, but now he seems small. Oh OUCH.

Ji-sook meets with the staff and tells them that from now on, they will be eating the same quality of food that the family eats. She’ll even pay for it if it costs more. She gets a sudden call and drags Min-woo out of the house, telling him that he’ll know where they’re going when they get there.

Stepmom complains about Ji-sook’s changes to the household to Papa Choi, and determines to undermine them. She doesn’t want Ji-sook to gain too much control in the household.

Mi-yeon examines the watch right in front of Seok-hoon, wondering what’s so special about it. Seok-hoon looks like he wants to bite something, especially when Mi-yeon says she feels powerful wearing the watch. He asks how long she plans to play this game with him, and she says until he explains things to her.

He claims the watch is his and Ji-sook was only returning it, but Mi-yeon ain’t buying that. He strides over to take it by force, but Mi-yeon refuses again, and she suddenly notices the camera lens in the face.

Min-woo is so adorable in the car, as he tries to get Ji-sook to tell him where they’re going by intimidation (hahahaNOPE), then begging, then he’s all, whiny: “Just give me a clue!” She takes him to a nice hotel, and as they walk in she asks him, “You never know what happens in life, right?” She says cryptically that at any moment, something could happen and she’d never see him again.

Before that happens, she says, there’s something they need to do. Uh, they’re in a hotel, is it RAWR time? Apparently not, dammit, since she rings the doorbell to a suite and the door is answered by an older man who calls her by name.

Ji-sook introduces Min-woo to one of the top neuropsychiatrists in the world — he’s a friend of Eun-ha’s, and Ji-sook had called him to meet with Min-woo. He starts to get upset, assuming this means she thinks he’s crazy, but she assures him it’s the exact opposite. She knows he’s not crazy, and this man can prove it.

Mi-yeon hooks the watch to her laptop and looks up at Seok-hoon with sad eyes, as he reaches into his pocket and advances toward her. He tells her that she’ll destroy the watch herself without watching the video, and believe his lies, because that’s what they always do. Life is a game of lies, and he knows what lies will help them get ahead.

The doctor has already had Min-woo’s pills analyzed, and though it looks like a common sedative, it’s actually a hallucinogenic drug. Min-woo thinks of all the hallucinations and nightmares he’s suffered, thinking they were proof he was insane, and how he’d taken even more of the pills at those times.

Further, the doctor is certain that Min-woo’s “memories” that he recovered during hypnosis were actually planted, and false. Min-woo’s mind races and his hands shake, and Ji-sook gently reaches over and takes his hand. She softly says that Min-woo would never hurt anyone, but he’s overwhelmed and he pulls away.

Late that night, Mi-yeon pulls up the video again, which Seok-hoon had led her to believe was of him and Eun-ha. He claims the video was taken before he met Mi-yeon, and that he was only getting it back from Eun-ha today so he could destroy it. He urges her again to delete it without watching it.

Mi-yeon asks if this is true, and Seok-hoon says no, it’s not — he told her he would lie to her. He says to believe the lies, in order to win the game with him. She thinks about it for a long minute, torn over whether to delete it and believe him, but we’re not shown what she decides.

Min-woo is still emotional when he arrives home, and he smashes all of his pill bottles. He gives in and sobs, dropping to his knees, and Ji-sook joins him on the floor. She gathers him gently into her arms, comforting him as he cries his sorrow and betrayal.

She tells him that you can either believe that you are nothing, or that the world was crated just for you. She says the world was created for him, and not to be scared.

Min-woo starts to keen in her arms, and Ji-sook just holds him tight.

COMMENTS

It’s about time that Min-woo and Ji-sook started supporting and defending each other, and it makes me so happy to see. they’d begun doing it when the opportunity arose, but now they’re going out of their way to support and defend each other. They’re both proving that they’re willing to go out on a limb, and they’re even opening up with each other about how they feel. They’ve each assured the other that they’re there for them, and they see the other as worthy of their trust and defense. This is such a positive step for both of them, especially Min-woo, considering that he still thinks Ji-sook is Eun-ha and he’s got every reason to be wary of her. But not only is he putting his trust in her, he’s telling everyone else so too, such as in his office when he told Mi-yeon simply, “She’s my wife.” She doesn’t need to do anything to earn his trust, he just gives it. And in return he’s wanting to prove himself trustworthy to her, and is also showing that he’s starting to have feelings for her.

When Min-woo asked if Ji-sook couple possibly love him, I nearly died. That as such a brave thing of him to ask at this point in their relationship, and he looked so hopeful and vulnerable, and I have a feeling that one word from her would have him professing his love right back. And you could tell from her expression that Ji-sook didn’t enjoy telling him that she could never love him. She’s much harder to read than Min-woo, but I have a feeling she’s trying to keep things platonic in order to protect herself. She’s living in such a frightening environment, and she can’t afford to let down her guard even with Min-woo.

Ji-sook has a lot to lose if she lets herself fall in love and gives Seok-hoon an opening to hook his claw into and get to her. Until she establishes herself as his equal in this game they’re playing, she can’t let herself have a soft spot he can exploit to control her. I’m a bit worried that she’s going to go too far, what with calling him stupid and small, and make him angry. I’m guessing she feels safe that he won’t kill her, because Eun-ha already had one (as far as the family knows) near-death accident in this household, and another one would cause suspicion. But an angry Seok-hoon makes mistakes, as we’re starting to see, and I would hate for her to count on him not going batshit in a fit of rage, and be wrong.

But I love that she’s not just using her Eun-ha persona to get a leg up on Seok-hoon — she’s also using it to establish herself in the household. Like when the maid broke the vase and Ji-sook cut off Stepmom from ripping her a new one, and instead assured her that everyone makes mistakes. Even making sure the staff will eat better is a great way to gain their loyalty. It’s part of Ji-sook’s nature to want to improve people’s lives, but it will also come in handy. I have a feeling that in a house with that many servants, getting them on her side could be extremely advantageous for Ji-sook.

It’s gratifying to see that Min-woo is astute enough to start cluing in that Seok-hoon is most likely out to get him, and brave enough to let him know. I feel that Min-woo, being a gentle soul, would almost always choose the peaceful path when possible — but you mess with someone he cares about, and he’ll fight back with a vengeance. I appreciated when he told Seok-hoon that she’s his wife now, because to me it sounded as if he were telling Seok-hoon, “Whatever happened in the past is done, but she’s mine now, and I will protect what is mine.” And he’s not stupid enough to think that Seok-hoon and Ji-sook’s supposed affair is all there is to their secretive meetings, and he’ll deal with that as it comes, but he’s not going to get into it over the past.

Seok-hoon is starting to make mistakes, and I get the feeling it’s because he’s not used to being challenged. Now he’s got Ji-sook on one side, resisting his efforts to control her, and Min-woo on the other side warning him not to mess with Ji-sook. Seok-hoon almost certainly wasn’t expecting either of those things, and you can see his mind racing furiously to figure out how to gain his control back. This is exactly what I was hoping to see… Ji-sook and Min-woo becoming a united front, and pushing back against Seok-hoon’s plans to bring them down. And now that Ji-sook is actively doing what she can to help Min-woo prove to himself that he’s not crazy, and it’s time to figure out what’s really happening and do something about it, I’m ready to see them team up and whoop some serious butt.

Min woo broke a vase before, everyone came to see but Min Woo flipped tables, broke bottle no one came, not even the butler, no one was at home I guess :P .... Seok Hoon indeed was looking pitiful when his wife was examining the watch :P I watched VP S1 now I am a fan of YJH.

A random thought: YJH's wife and JJH's gf share the same name, (Han) Ga In and (Son) Ga In :)

Ikr? The only explanation I could come up with is that maybe the house was in a state of high alert after Min-woo’s near drowning incident, so they were sensitive to every sound that came from his room. Sort of how you'd keep a night vigil over a sick child. But when his condition improved, they lowered their vigilance and paid him less attention so they didn't focus on him and any noise coming from his room this time around.

Let's not even mention how they all arrived within a minute, last time, which I disbelieve is even possible in a huge house like theirs.

Also, you notice how the angle and position of the hidden cameras in MW's room keep on changing? SH has to have like 30 cameras in that room to make that possible; hope none of them were in the table MW just flipped, lol.

Seok-Hoon having cameras in Min-Woo/Ji-Sook room is so disturbing and depraved to me.

I hope that Min-Woo and Ji-Sook never mistakenly think they have any privacy in that house.

But isn't that like a plot hole? I mean the watch camera was in Jung Tae's house, but he was killed in SH's office. So how is it possible that the watch in his house recorded footage in Seok Hoon's office???!!!

Even if Jung Tae was wearing the watch, it wouldn't have been able to capture the footage at that angle and be returned into Jung Tae's house. LIke I honestly couldn't figure that out.

"Min woo broke a vase before, everyone came to see."

Uugg.

I thought that was just awful.
A young couple in their bedroom at night. There is a noise. No one screams for help and yet the entire household shows up, enters their private suite without knocking and waiting for permission.

Just awful.

That's why I was hopeful when Ji-Sook and Min-Woo entered the hotel together. I thought well at least they could break things while having fun without fear of interruption. LOL

As with many k-dramas I often wonder if Koreans haven't discovered locks or latches for door.

Of if locks only come in play when fathers want to padlock daughters in their rooms.

It's nice to see Ji-sook turning the tables to protect Min-woo as he had protected her in the past. Sqqqquuuuueeeaaaal! This is a couple that protects each other and looks out for one another. Min-woo doesn't need to be told that Ji-sook loves him, he can feel her love for him, in her very actions. The warmth and care he feels when she is near. The safety he feels in her presence. He allowed himself to cry in her arms and be vulnerable, they don't have to scream 'I love yous' to convince me. Actions speak louder than words.

Contrast this with Mi Yeon's relationship with Seok Hoon, they keep saying the the words but their actions and expressions speak very differently. There's coldness and distrust in the air when they are together. Mi Yeon is in love with her husband, but he isn't with her, so her anger and jealousy nakes her lash out and needle him constantly and his mask is wearing thin.

This drama is simply brilliant and the actors and writing are first rate. I am having a blast with this drama! Who knew I could be so obsessed! LOL.

They've reduced Seok Hoon from a brilliant, evil master mind to a pathetic man scrambling to regain the upper hand. I love seeing him like this, although I fear it won't be for long.

I actually really like the vibe from Mi Yeon and Seok Hoon interaction, it's cold and distrust like you said but also entertaining, seriously, they have great chemistry.

The casting crew really did a great job, they got the character not just the actors. I feel like I am rewarded as audience cause the feel is real.

You're so right about feeling rewarded as a viewer because the actors are knocking it out of the ballpark. I can even imagine that the writers must feel the same way. It must be inspiring to have actors breathe so much life into your characters.

That actor Seok Hoon can have chemistry with anyone. Like he has chemistry with Ji Sook's character whom he wants to control, threatens and uses. He has chemistry with Mi Yeon who he doesn't really want but can not leave too, he is manipulating her feelings, betraying her. And lastly he has chemistry with Eun Ha's character who he actually loved and desired. You can feel his love (if you watched ep 12) in his eyes, actions and words, he looked really lovable then

Yes! I love this couple's protection of each other. It's so good to see JS doing it in return for MW now. I think with JS revealing the truth to MW and assuring him she believes he's not crazy or capable of hurting others, it's a turning point for them. That final scene shows his complete trust in her and that's she's the only one he can lean on now in this household. I think in his heart he can feel JS's love, but he still hopes for confirmation in words one day.

I completely agree with you about the contrast with the 2 couples. Kudos to the actors because as viewers we can tell what's going on in their heads even though their words say otherwise. Both couples are also sizzling with chemistry though.

I am enjoying Ji Sook's transformation. While she has been timid for many of the early episodes, it is nice to see her finally start to show some of her inner strength. While she is in a very dangerous and terrifying situation, it is not new to her. Having dealt with the threats and violence of the loan sharks for most of her life, Ji Sook knows how to be strong for herself and her family members even in dire circumstances. Seok Hoon may be rich and powerful, but he is just like the violent thugs she is used to dealing with on a regular basis. The only difference is that Seok Hoon is totally crazy while the loan sharks are rational in their goals. If Ji Sook underestimates Seok Hoon's instability, there will be unforeseen consequences. Hopefully, when the danger increases team Ji Sook and Min Woo will find a way to win. Love conquers all!

The one detail that left me scratching my head is the way that Ji Sook found the watch/hidden camera. The apartment was a murder scene that had already been searched by the police. How did they miss the watch in the flowers?!?!? That is some sloppy police work! It was also very convenient that the watch was placed in a way to give a perfectly framed view of the murder(with no stray petals in the way). The hidden camera would have been more believable if it had been a fake flower or if the watch had been worn during tge attack. A lower quality video would have also been more believable, perhaps with jumpy visuals, bad sound quality, and maybe just a short glimpse of the murderer's face. I'll accept the idea of the perfectly placed camera and clear video, but it is painful.

The show has done a good job so far in giving me just enough believability to suspend my disbelief of the over-the-top dramatic elements and convenient coincidences so that the makjang is enjoyable without veering into roll-my-eyes ridiculousness (see "Jang Bo Ri is Here" for a good example of enjoyable ridiculous makjang). I have liked the balance of melo, romance, and over-the-top elements that give this drama a unique "flavor" and I hope the writer does not stray too far into convenient plot points just to make the story flow.

Earlier, one of the bar hostess girls mentioned that he photographed EVERYTHING with a hidden camera, so probably not the first time that watch has been used. So while it stretch reality a bit, it is not totally far fetched.

My disbelief wasn't so much for the use of the watch and more that the police did not find it when they searched the murder scene. It did not seem all that well hidden in the flowers.

It's a well known fact that the police in Korean dramas are usually totally incompetent :D

And in fact there is some truth to it.

it was not a murder scene - he set it up to look like a suicide. if JS as EH did not comply - SH would have used the spector of her brother being the killer to bring her to task. The murder was deemed a suicide.

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!

This ep feels so good!! I love seeing JS stepping up to defend MW and finding evidence to back up her claims. She's utilizing the knowledge from digging through EH's belongings in order to one-up SH and help her husband. That is awesome!

I love that she's using her powers to help others. It's wonderful to see her changing things both at home and at work. You can see the household staff's appreciation--grant it, none of them have probably felt any kindness up to this point from the rest of the family. So, it's good to see them gravitating towards her and I have no doubt that will come in handy. It's also great that she's carrying out her plans that she'd only dreamed about before and using her personal experience to help employees, such as changing the cafeteria menu and adding the massage chairs. It's the perfect combo of her caring ways and her powers.

Sooo satisfying to see SH making blunders and being thrown off balance by JS!! How can he let someone grab that watch out of his hand so easily?! And then MY got to it! Anyway, the CCTV video got him to unfreeze JS's accounts. *fist pumps* And it felt so good to see SH losing control over JS as she stands up to him.

MW! Why are you so cute? Kekeke~ I really like his moments with JS, all the bickering in the car and then admitting the tiff is his fault in an indirect way. =P And like you said, his hopeful and vulnerable scene just hits you right at the heart. We are aware that JS did do it out of love to defend her husband since he's her family now. But MW is still uncertain... He keeps hoping that what he's seeing and feeling are true, yet he's not sure if it's just out of duty and not love... Totally wanna give him a hug. I agree that JS can't let SH gain a foothold anywhere for now, so she needs to play the game well. I'm sure the time will come when she will let MW know she cares for him.

I was impressed that JS also used EH's connections to help MW. Getting in touch with the neuropsychiatrist and letting MW know about the fake meds and hallucination was so awesome!! Finally!! He's assured he's not crazy! Even though that final scene of MW breaking down was heartbreaking to see, it's the step that's needed to get MW on board with JS against SH. It was also satisfying to see MW telling SH he's not oblivious to what's going on around him. I actually find it really wonderful that MW trusts JS and thinks there's more going on than an affair in the past. He thinks SH has something to threaten JS with, which shows he is already on JS's side. And yes, he will protect her at all costs! ^^V

I have been refreshing for this episode recap. Thanks so much LollyPip. I have seen this episode 5x now, and it still makes smile and fist pump every single time.

We finally get a strong SEH from JS and I love that what brings it on is a need to protect MW. This episode had so much awesome. Publicly protect MW, check. Out the evil psychiatrist, check. Stand up to SH, check. Start to rally support, check. Finally paying off family's debt, check. JS starting to reciprocate care, and earning MW's trust, check.

This show is hitting all the right notes even with its overused plot, because of both the great acting, great chemistry, and the feel of infusion of new life into said overused plot. Power on, show, power on!

thanks for the check sign, you really make me feel relieve with reading it.

Thanks lollypip that was a great recap!

I am extremely happy at how the writer is developping the deep love connection between the main couple. WOOOW they are unconsciously falling for each other and showing some serious protecting and trust side ?

It's good to see ji sook studying about Eunha's background and counterattacks! not only she stood up for her family by making that low loan shark kneel and apologize for his wrong doing, getting her ex coworkers an easy better conditions at work but now she's publicly defending Min woo and saved his position as she considers him her family too.....Yes brave confident jisook is awesome and no one should mess with her man ♡♡♡♡♡

At their room when she said she can never love him to me she was screaming -------》 I love you hardly as her action showed clearly how emotional attached she is to her husband. The bickering in the car is sooo cute whyy so sweet...this otp is one kind that melts my heart ♡_♡ and the last scene was heartbreaking poor Min woo :(( but at least now he knows the truth and has ji sook by his side forever.

Lmfao Seok Hoon craving for more power and money know no boundries but watching him shaken by that watch was funny i LOLed at MY teasing him and getting on his nerves...

Ps: that mask usb was soo cool it fits the theme of the drama so well.

Why does JS give the watch back to SH? She already gave him the USB. Is it to make him believe that she gives him the original and therefore has no other copy? But no one will believe that, least of all SH.

For 10 eps, JS has been comatose; now all of a sudden she is courageous and smart enough to go search the dead man's apt and threaten SH. Might the writer be reading all the complaints vs JS's passivity?

So it is just the writer's way to give MY access to the damning file. Will MY watch it or delete it w/o watching as per her husband's request? I believe she doesn't watch it now, but it'll be there for future 'reference'.

I pity MY. What a sham of a marriage! Why be stuck w such an awful man and ruin her life by turning herself into an alcoholic? It's just crazy-making. She is of course shallow and somewhat mean. If she even takes after her mom a little bit, she can't be very nice.

I don't think she has been as passively dormant as we thought she was in previous episodes. Some of what she has been pulling takes a while to set up, so I think she has been gathering information and evidence for longer than what the drama actually shows.

As far as the debt collector director, I think his greed has pretty much signed his death warrant, he is just too greedy to realize what a psychopath he is dealing with.

As far as Mi-yeon, I think she is drifting closer and closer to total insanity, and will eventually end up in a mental ward. I also think that her Satanic hubby will find some way to cause a miscarriage - it is pretty obvious he does not really want any kid.

It'd have been nice if they had shown us in previous eps even a little bit of what JS's preparing, in order to up her game w SH, so that viewers didn't have to bang their heads in frustration, and her transition from timid to daring wouldn't be so abrupt.

She's full of doubt and insecurity, prefers to remain in her comfort zone while poking the bear, is a usual enough spoiled brat who does not take well to losing...even to the point of wanting to hurt her enemy (JS), but were there clues as to her growing insanity???

I think we have to suspend disbelief for the show to work.

how can JS pretending to be EH confront SH from the outset? First of all, that wouldn't be smart on her part b/c she has to protect her family, and herself. Also, SH is the only one who can help her navigate her new persona. So, it made sense to me that she was "quiet as a mouse" until she knew enough to figure a way out. Just because someone is quiet does not mean they're asleep mentally.

I feel sorry for Mi Yeon. She knows her husband is manipulating her and yet every time she resists, he ups his manipulation and she doesn't know what to do. Has the show shown how Mi Yeon married Seok Hoon to begin with?

The show hasn't shown us how MY married SH. But it is not difficult to surmise that her dad saw the very capable SH and deemed him useful for his empire. Thanks LollyPip for this much anticipated recap!

I read all the comments so far and I'm actually agreeing with everyone.

I love this show. I can see some mistakes and some issues with the execution (as mentioned above even) but I still love this show.

It has very much to do with the fact that from the beginning it got me/us invested in the plight of Min Woo and Ji Sook. They were in such terrible positions of powerlessness and of being victims under SH's control, that I've been pining for weeks (like MW has LOL!) for a stronger, closer unity and trust between MW and JS, that no one outside their marriage can shake.

While I really like how JS has stepped up so much and is flying in the face of SH before whom she used to tremble, I wish we had seen more of her transition and how JS became aware of the power she had. We were given hints of it sometimes before or after the fact, but the result still feels like one day she was in despair and the next she had all the wherewithal to deploy her power.

I too really wanted her to be able to respond positively to MW's hopeful question... might she love him? And I felt so crushed with him that she said could never love him. But 'never' is too long, Ji Sook-shi.... just say, until you settle everything, you dare not love him.... or something warmer, sweeter, like that. :)

"still feels like one day she was in despair and the next she had all the wherewithal to deploy her power."...

I think sometimes as things build up, it just takes that "one last straw" to create a change in someone where they are not just going to stand by, they are going to take action and do something about their situation.

I think the "one last straw was when JS thought she was going to able to protect MW by removing and then hiding the papers she found in the book that she was given to place in MW's room, only to find that SH had planned further damage by hiding the crushed pills in the book. Mamma bear finally came out. She has shown she had it in her in the past as she scolded her brother for his intentions on robbing the bank.

I don't know if it's intended to be comical but I just laugh.SH always look calm and act like everything is under control but whenever he shows rage he gets caught. The first one when he smashed down the laptop and seen by the father in law. Then today he did the same thing with the usb and although MW didn't actually see him doing it, he put everything together. The way MW looked at SH when he saw the crushed usb on the floor, just satisfying. Too bad he just left, I was wondering what kind of excuse SH would come up with. Is it gonna be bad business again?

@GB

I think Jisook believes that she doesn't have the right to love Minwoo as she has been deceiving him with her true identity. Renember she also told Minwoo not to love and her reminding them both they got married for business purposes only. So yeah, like you mentioned she cannot love him until everything is settled.

Regarding JS's transition, I get now why she refused Miyeon's offer of help in the previous episode. It's not that she didn't need her help but because she's prepared enough to protect MW against evil SK.

@Giegie I read ya, ... it's all good.

I'd never have guessed from the beginning episodes, that our scary Seok Hoon would be the one to amuse us - as in be 'funny inadvertently'. He was so cool and almost inhuman before, but he's moved into delulu and now he's showing holes and making mistakes.

I don't know whether to cheer ? or be sad... I did so like his villain badass-ery, his quick ? counter moves and intelligence... ? I"m even missing his Scar lackey. What happened to that evil ? minion??? LOL! Now he was really scary - good-looking and ? chillingly scary at the same time. ?

I'm hoping that with a few more episodes to go, SH will up his game (and his delusions and his mistakes) and JS with MW will up theirs. Maybe we can get a few more laughs at SH's expense in the process. ? That's the way this drama should go!!! ;)

I still find SH character arch the most interesting and thrilling here, maybe because I'm fond of YJH's acting! He is utterly brilliant :)! He is able to render all the complexity and evilness of his character and the suffering underneath.

SPOILER ALERT

- "I can never love you." perhaps Jisook doesnt want to drag Minwoo down with her. She fully realized that her hands are already dirty somehow.
- Seokhoon confuse me all the time (in a good way) first he was a coldblooded idealist, next he was taking selfie with Miyeon. he's so human sometimes I forgot to hate him.
- I can so totally see Seokhoon, Miyeon and Jisook (as an unwilling accomplice) serve their time in jail any moment.
- I guess Miyeon is officially part of the game now. She's not a side character now. Her hands are pretty much bloody now like Seokhoon, anyway.

ANOTHER NEXT WEEK :((((((((

That is NOT true at all.

A story/drama has to make progress logically. When you have a Lead character that doesn't act for 10 eps, ppl get impatient and frustrated, bcos a lead char is supposed to be more active. Then you have her do a 180 degree turn, rational ppl wonder why, bcos with no foreshadowing, it is way too sudden. There are some basic principles to good writing.

Too bad other viewers' opinion not jiving with yours bothers you, but it doesn't mean "they'll never be satisfied". No one wants to have reason to complain about a drama they are generally loving.

0
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

It wasn't a 180 degree turn. We got hints of her inner strength, rebelliousness, and courage through out the drama.

Does anyone remember when she jumped in front of two women who were about to be beaten? How she swallowed perfume and climbed down a multi story building just to escape Seok Hoon? That takes guts. This isn't the type of thing a completely passive character does.

Granted, she might agree to go with Seok Hoon plans in his face, but she's always thinking of ways to rebel against him. This is before she knew of how much of an evil guy he was, and trusted him to at least uphold his word if she kept her end of the deal. But she finds out she can't trust him. That she's completely on her own. With no allies, no family, surrounded by people who are hostile to her. (Even Min Woo was like this in the beginning. It's only recently that she's discovering that she can somewhat trust him.)

She may have guts and inner strength, but she's also terrified and isolated and doesn't know what to do. This isn't her typical battlefied. Humming to herself and letting people's words bounce off her isn't going to work here.

She tries to rebel when she can, tries to find a foothold. She hasn't been successful so far since Seok Hoon constantly kept her under threats and hampering her every move (threatening her brother and family, making Ji Sook be a murder suspect, etc). She fails a lot, she sometimes gets discouraged and just lets people push her around (especially if no one is in danger). And while Seok Hoon tends to outmaneuver her a lot of the time, Ji Sook never stops trying, is always trying new things to get herself out of Seok Hoon's control. This is just one of those times when her efforts pay off.

Ok I have not been this "thirsty" over a drama in awhile. Lol! I'm looking forward to next week to see how things go from there because Ep. 12' cliffhanger was pretty good in my opinion.

I think JiSook has always pretty privy to what's up (in life) in general. But having been thrown/lured into an unfamiliar enviornment with a crazy "assignment", I think it took her awhile to find her footing and make realizations that we as veiwers felt like her character should have already made. I was definitely one of the people yelling at my television, among other thngs, "Girl, if you don't get your life....!" Getting with the program "late" is better than never at all. Lol! I'm so glad that she is using Seo EunHa's powers for good and not for the evil Seok Hoon thought he was going to be able to bully and bamboozle her into doing. What's interesting to me is that she was like do what you will to take over the company, just not at the expense of Minwoo's over all health and safety. There's so much else I liked about this episode and many other's have commented on them so I won't repeat.

Please tell me that I'm not the only one that can see some glimmers of Fated to Love You?? I know I'm not the only who is watching Mask that also enjoyed that drama... The loyal Assistant/scertary... the "fortress of solitude"... the bed/sofa hijinks...(it's just a matter of time before they're "together sleeping") the awkward car ride with the radio.. C'mon people!! Lol! I do like this couple together and I like the charachters apart from one another as well. I can see myself marathoning this show later =D

Yay for this recap! Im always eager to hear what our beanies think re: Mask.
So is everyone happy now for JS's long awaited confidence? I am. But while im glad, JS's turn around coming from ep 10 felt a little drastic to me. Tho it was abt time. I felt like I wudve preferred to see her development in moderation so that by ep 12 the satifaction wud be so high.
But I can definately live with hw things are going. And the local audience seems just as happy. Evrn the ratings started to climb. My hope is that JS sudden confidence is properly written so that it will fit nicely into the nxt 8 eps. The 2nd half does indeed feel like a new era for the show.
And can we plz get a swoon worthy kiss in the near future eps? I was dying for some lip action this ep. This is my only expectation next week. Writer-nim dont mess that up!
The next eps are a mystery to me. The only thing I expect plotwise is to see hw MY is going to treat SH and JS after *spoiler* that reveal next ep.
Cant wait to read ep 12 recap.

I haven't read the comments yet so idk if sum1 already noted this. But when JS said I can not love you (I believe those were the translation on Viki), she didnt mean 'I don't love you' bc im no fool. Maybe she doesn't realize she love MW but I sure do. I interpreted her line to mean 'im not qualified to love u' or 'the circumstances im living in right now makes me incapable of accepting ur love'. And some comments on Soompi agree with me on that. One Soompier noted that inserting a 'never' into the character's sentence is a gross mis-rendering from the actual words spoken.
In any case, I did enjoy this ep. JS may not be able to show him that she cares for him romantically, butbactions speak louder than words. Am I right or am I right? She can't express her feelings romantically but she'll do everything to prove his worth to her. And I think MW gets that. Tho one cud say JS is being confusing. I think she wants to keep her distance fro him but can only resist to a point. She's clearly smitten.

@Growingbeautifully yup. Im just gonna enjoy it. AND continue to theorise. Its so much fun. Im realising how much I like kdramas with alot of mysteries. It makes for interesting discussion.
Say, Gb do u think that EH and JS are just dopplegangers? Or are u in the camp for: twins or older sister? Ppl on Soompi are betting on this one.

@Camille W

Heheheh! I'd go for twins with Ji Sook's ? family somehow being the real birth family and having to give/sell away a daughter to pay off the hopeless father's debts. The politician couple don't seem to be the doting parents type: maybe they just needed a child in the family to make it look ? like a complete family for the campaign trails? ?

@Growingbeautifully same! I genuinely believe that they are twins. But u nvr know. The show initially introduced the doppleganger idea. Then the mother denies the idea of twins. And both women are 2 yrs apart. Plus one of JS's co-workers said that she thinks the two are twins. BUT THEN it was revealed that there was an older sister who died/or was lost idk. The show is trying to make us confused. Next thing u knw the show will just end by confirming that the two were just dopplegangers all along. Watever, its half the fun guessing.
