Kim Min-jung to join Jang Hyuk in The Innkeeper
by girlfriday
KBS’s new fall historical epic The Innkeeper is busy rolling out the casting offers: First up were Jang Hyuk (Shine or Go Crazy) and Han Chae-ah (Mi-rae’s Choice), who are still considering their headlining roles, and now Kim Min-jung (Gap-dong) is being courted to join them. I’ve never really loved Kim Min-jung in anything, especially when she’s playing that typical naive wide-eyed innocent girl, but here she’s up to play an antagonist, which could be a promising turn.
The Innkeeper is based on a serial novel that ran in the Seoul Shinmun from 1979 to 1982, and tells the stories of tradesmen and merchants in late Joseon. It’s an underdog success story about a poor man (Jang Hyuk) who inherits an inn and eventually becomes a powerful businessman who doesn’t cave to threats, and fights against the shady alliances between government and big business. He never loses sight of his humble beginnings as a peddler even after achieving great success, and eventually shapes the way that industry and business are done in his time. Han Chae-ah is up to play his love interest.
Kim Min-jung has been offered the role of an ambitious woman who becomes ruthless and twisted due to her obsessive love. Because of her greed to have what isn’t hers, she causes herself pain and brings unhappiness to everyone around her. Gee, what a ray of sunshine. In order to gain a man, she ends up becoming a shaman, which she had opposed her entire life.
Once she becomes a shaman, she gains the favor of Empress Myeongseong (wife of King Gojong) and fights with the queen’s relatives for her affection, eventually becoming extremely powerful. It sounds like it’ll be a deliciously evil role as a character who influences royalty, which will directly affect the hero’s struggle to be free of corrupt government forces.
PD Kim Jong-sun of Gwanggaeto the Great and writer Jung Sung-hee of King Geunchogo are at the helm, and The Innkeeper follows Assembly on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in September.

I really like her. She is very charismatic and she has the skills needed for this. She's going to rock a villain role.

Never really warmed up to her in the few things I've seen her in (including things w/ an otherwise excellent cast and top notch writing/directing).
Also, while she has "big eyes," they're kinda weird and not that attractive.

I've never really liked her either but she may be great as the antagonist. I find that in many sageuks or historical-based dramas these days, the female antagonist really steals the show most of the times

Although her role in Thorn Birds not only was it hateful but also imcomprehensible beyond imagination, her character in New Heart was one of the best ever given to a female lead. Strong and decisive (and also the "man" in the romance department!). If one had told me that this OTP had been "reversed" somehow. I'd have believed it pronto. JS was so sweet and full of consideration to such an extend that he could very well be the "female" lead (and no, no YoNa lol!). Perhaps the role of the villain in a sageuk could be perfect for her...
Just a plot and a script that will make sense, people in KBS! Thanks...

I despised her character in Thornbirds, she was so mean to my first Kdrama crush, Han Hye‑jin.
She should rock as this evil character. Looking forward to seeing this.

@John, LOL!!! Your first crush is both beautiful and talented. In TB was an angel, literally :-)
My only objection is that she declined the role in All About My Romance and got off to be happily married, hahaha. One unspeakable actress ( I can't even mention her name, lol) took on the drama and the rest is history... I blame it on your crush and her long honeymoon in Britain, XD ;-)

I am not a fan of Kim Min-jung's works, or more specifically, her acting. For example, her performance in Gap-Dong was pretty "lacking", in my opinion. I still think she needs to learn to emote more. She is one of those actresses that tend to go wide-eyed whenever something dire happens, and be all bland or near emotionless when something big is not happening in a scene. I hope her turn as an antagonist (should she take on this role) will prove that she is as capable an actress as I hope she is.

Jang Hyuk really does love his sageuks lol I really love Han Chae Ha so I hope she takes on this drama, it seems like it'll e good. Although knowing KBS, I'll have to keep my expectations low.
I've only seen Kim Min Jung in like 1 thing so I have no real opinion on her acting, but this character sounds awesome.

Sayaka ~
Her best scene in the regrettable Gap Dong was her sporting the white. Go-go boots. She could have sexed up her alter ego character a bit. I hope she does well in this.

John ~
I don't even remember her sporting the white Go-Go boots... that is how much of a blur her presence in the drama was to me. I suppose it did not help that Gap-Dong went downhill until the end.
Best wishes to the cast! I will be checking this drama out when it airs.
