Hwang Jung-eum, Park Seo-joon courted to reunite for new drama

From twins to love interests? Well, they DID have an uncomfortable amount of chemistry for a pair of siblings in Kill Me, Heal Me… so maybe this new drama will rectify that? Offers are out to Hwang Jung-eum and Park Seo-joon to return to MBC and headline their next Wednesday-Thursday drama, called She Was Pretty.

The new series comes from PD Jung Dae-yoon (second PD on Sly and Single Again and The King 2 Hearts), and is about a beautiful girl who grows up ugly and an ugly boy who grows up beautiful. Surely there’s something deeper going on than two people who have swapped directions on the looks scale… right?

Hwang Jung-eum is being courted to play the heroine, a once beautiful young girl whose fortune changes overnight when her father’s publishing house goes bankrupt. She starts to work part-time jobs ’round the clock and her grades fall, and to top it off, the ugly gene that she inherited from her grandfather kicks into gear during puberty, making her lose her beauty too.

Park Seo-joon is up to play the male lead, who as a teenager was 10cm shorter and 10kg heavier, and a socially awkward nerd who couldn’t even look girls in the eye or give a presentation in front of his class. He grows up to look like a model who walked out of the pages of a magazine, and becomes a copywriter for a magazine as an adult.

There isn’t much plot information beyond the character descriptions, so I’m guessing that romance and hijinks ensue. Perhaps without the birth secrets this time? If Hwang Jung-eum can promise to keep the shouting to a minimum, I’ll suspend my disbelief about the pretty-to-ugly transformation and root for her to get the hottie.

She Was Pretty follows Scholar Who Walks the Night on Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning in September.

This is amazing. I can't wait for it now. I have to wait until September now right? I loved their chemistry in Kill Me Heal Me.. And please, PSJ is a total model who walked out of a magazine. But I dunno how they are going to make HJE ugly....

I wish such shows would cast a normal looking lady for once, rather than someone with an ideally sculpted face who will probably get some glasses and a false mole and be called "ugly". And how about some "ugly" guys, or are they afraid no one will watch if they can't sell their hot oppars?

I like the actors and they had good chemistry in 'Kill Me, Heal Me', but the whole "ugly" vs. pretty romance between two actually pretty actors just doesn't appeal much. Still, because I like them, I might follow.

I can't agree more with you. This pretty/ugly theme is a huge turn off for me, especially considering how obsessed Korea is with looks and appearance. You hit the nail on the head by pointing out the hypocrisy of it all just looking at the already fine-looking cast. A bit of credibility won't hurt but they're probably just going to perpetuate stereotypes (though I'd like to think their intention is good).

well.. define a normal looking lady. i mean even if they were to really find a 'normal' looking actress, they will still be people that thinks she is pretty (etc). imo, hwang jungeum is a rly good actress and she is not those typical pretty face and all type so i guess she fits in. talking about puting on glasses and mole for a ugly character, i mean they can't possibily make themselves REAL ugly right. if there were to be a rly realistic show like ugly girl then people on the streets can be casted. altho the plot is pretty much typical but i am looking forward to it cuz of the great casts.. hope they will bring out the drama outstandingly. let's just give them a chance ya

That is such a stooopid synopsis and the name reminds me of She's so Lovable which that can't help either. On top of that, casting HJE as 'ugly' after she had multiple PS is such too much of a belief for me to suspend. Her screaming and acting is already unbearable to me, now she won't even look the part? I'm so out.

apparently, whether she has PS or not does not concern you and thank god you are out cuz you are being so sour right now it's unbearable for me. oh ya her acting is acknowledged by many as u can see from kmhm so yup.

OMG please please drama God... makes it comes true! I couldn't not root for JS-HJE in KMHM, because who could with that golden onscreen pairing, but had to admit or HJE-PSJ great chemistry too. Now MBC seems to monitor many viewers wish and decides to reunite them again so soon! Like JS-HJE from Secret Love to KMHM, very soon too. And DB didn't mention this but PSJ character name should be Ji Sung Ji ... hahaha...

But, like some K Netizens comments, how will they pick the Best Couple in 2015 MBC Awards for HJE? Hmmm....

I think its unfair when people repeatedly bring up her loud voice in KMHM. This is the same actress who did Secret, Endless Love and she can do both loud and somber depending on I guess how the PD wants her to act. I like the pairing and considering the fact that I've seen this woman not object to a mushroom cut in Can You Hear My Heart, chances are she may say yes. I like the idea of the drama and Seo Joon too, hope they both end up doing it.

'Kill Me, Heal Me' was popular, people disliked her style (which they perceive as her own choice alone, which it usually never is in Dramaland) so it has automatically defined her for some. They probably haven't watched any other works by her.

You'd think people would keep that in mind and not make their judgment absolute then, but most folks are perfectly happy to define someone without having seen more than one work. Which is unfair, but then people usually are.

One of Hwang Jung-eum's greatest assets as an actress is her willingness to sacrifice her vanity/total lack of hangups about not looking 'pretty' in a scene. Based on that alone, she'd be perfect for this role.

And like you said, she's incredibly versatile and the KMHM shrieking was PD's orders - surely we are intelligent enough to realise that much, after seeing her do other things in that role.

I don't know how HJE would pull 'ugly' looks unless she will go totally for it (I'm sure if she's interested enough she will go all out, remember Oh Ri Jin's fashion sense). PSJ's character will be believable since they just have to cast a child actor. KMHM reunion is welcome since I luuurv their chemistry. If they're in, Ji Sung should do cameo!

Don't worry, she always all-out . Remember that she was a woman with bowl-cut hair in Can You Hear My Heart, perm in Full House 2, and then a fat woman in the beginning of Incarnation of Money.

Required fields are marked *

I bet she'll have bad hair and glasses, and look like a beautiful woman with bad hair and glasses. That's the accepted "ugly woman" look in dramas... unless of course it's a minor character in which case fat = ugly.

Of course, there's a 50% chance she'll get contacts and a better haircut (and lose weight) and become miraculously attractive by the end of the drama, because no man can be expected to be with an ugly girl. *rolls eyes*

I'm sorry, I'm just a little frustrated with these so-called "ugly women" on TV who are actually gorgeous. It sends the wrong kind of message, IMO. If you want a dreama starring an average or ugly heroine, that's great, I would love that. But have her actually be average or ugly, to actually send the message that those kind of women are also relevant and interesting.

Trying to send that message with a lovely actress really, really backfires.

I agree with you, but then Korea seems to operate by a whole different standard of what is 'ugly'.

Like their 'ugly' is Go Ah-sung and Choi Soo-young....who routinely get bitched at for the way they look despite being extremely attractive and talented young women.

Just because the fact that Hwang Jung-eum was asked by the director to shout in a few scenes from KMHM doesn't mean she keeps shouting in every drama she's in. I am glad that she's received the offer but the plot doesn't sound interesting to me. She has enough acting chops to pull off more challenging roles. Let's keep traveling and wait for other scripts, Jung-eum unnie.

The premise is a little meh, but I am SO onboard with any KMHM reunion! How awesome would it be for poor Ri On to get the girl! I'd love for both to accept the offer but the plot's general strangeness makes me wonder if they will. Unless it's going to be a thoughtful portrayal and analysis of society's standards for beauty and not yet another Candy-esque romance (how many more girls in debt due to irresponsible fathers do we need?), I don't see either of them taking the roles, which is a shame 'cause I love both of them and want to see them together ASAP. Fingers crossed?

The plot sounds like something that would be a Korean drama. I'm interested only because it sounds like lots of misunderstandings and hijinx with a sprinkle of rom-com antics. I also think Park Seo Joon would be great as a geek to chic character and would totally rock this role.

Hwang Jung Eum and Park Seo Joon did have good chemistry in KMHM, but HJE can become annoying really fast with the overacting, shouting, and overly cute expressions. I had to skip/mute her scenes several times in KMHM because her voice became way to loud and annoying. I'm hoping another actresses name with be tossed into the mix before the OTP is secured.

Nobody should judge a drama based on the synopsis alone..

Sometimes, the ones who looks good on paper doesn't look good when act by actors who don't fit the role or give their roles justice.

Anyway, I'm positive that these two choose good projects and support them no matter what :)

Not to mention one of Hwang Jung-eum's hobby seems to be turn black horse dramas into successful ones with good ratings. One of Rating Queens with real acting talent & ability to pick good scripts.

It really seems off but I am gonna give it a try

even if HJE is sure georgous is some pictorial, but I really saw the ugly theme, she is really weird in Full Huse Take Two, plain looking (but still cute) in CYHMH and not to mention many comment about him being ugly/not attractive enough to be lead female in many drama reaction, I believe she can pull it off, some her scene in KMHM also not a definition of bad/good looking either, she has uniqueness to try diff role and I give her a chance for that

PSJ in drama? again? why not? he is handsome without much effort but then he has chemistry and I'd love to see him as male lead,

I hope the plot can have much things going on, maybe they'll have a cameo
Ahn Yo-Na as ex gf
real Ji sung as ex by
Ji sung and LBY as some ahjussi
or Oh ri On as funny cameo,

Perry Park as ex gf

I dont know about others but I like watching pretty people in a film/drama if its especially young romance. Sure they could make HJE all ugly but I wont complain if she gets a makeover and becomes prettier.
You can call me unacceptable but most of you wouln' watch korean dramas if leads were really ugly as fuck.
For e.g. be true? Would you really have enjoyed the romance in 'Birth of a beauty' if the lead was the fat woman rather than Han Ye Seul? No.

i know the premise sounds weird like pretty to ugly and ugly to pretty, pretty shallow but you never know, it might be deeper then that and more complex. cause KMHM was totally scoffed at sounding crazy. but i love rom coms so im waiting for this one and both these two had wonderful chemistry in KMHM although ji sung and jung eum are my ultimate kdrama otp

im excited i hope they both get on board and hope the drama is good

Before having seen Secret and Kill Me Heal Me, my feelings toward both Hwang Jung-eum and Park Seo Joon was pretty much neutral. I didn't dislike or like either of them. I had seen Full House 2 and A Witch's Romance, but it didnt garner enough interest from me to go about and look for more of their dramas. After Secret, I started to think that HJE is quite a stellar actress, and I find it more impressive that she is someone who really works at her craft. She isn't afraid to look unattractive for a role either, which is a breath of fresh air when you consider how many young actresses out there is more self-conscious than anything in front of the camera nowadays. And Park-Seo-Joon is impressing me with the range and diversity in roles he has taken up since A Witch's Romance. He is really putting himself out there. The fact that he never quit Kill Me Heal Me during the disarray of casting issues and media drama really makes me appreciate him as an actor and person.

HJW and PSJ did a beautiful job in Kill Me Heal Me, and I'm sure if they both decide to take this project on, they will floor us with another splash of ground-breaking performances. As long as the script writer and the live-shoot system don't drown it first. o_O

i don't get how some people are saying that the plot is not good and etc. i mean all the dramas are not good if you are gona think it that way. what about those drama that have divorce couples then they patch together, those male leads that are super rich and female leads being poor? it doesn't brings out a good message either. those male leads that scold people etc, you think it's a good example to show on tv. erm no. there is no perfect show or whatsoever. if you want a educational drama then i guess you are in the wrong line. every drama has it's own plot. rather than saying how much u hate HJE/ how much this plot is bad, why not u just not watch it. it won't bother you so much. and yes it bothers me a lot because i actly support the casts and WILL BE looking forward to watch this
