Mask: Episode 10
by LollyPip
Trust is the name of the game these days, and it’s time for Ji-sook and Min-woo to start trusting each other as Seok-hoon steps up his plan to take down Min-woo and gain control of the company. The shape of his plan is made clear, but his confidence could undermine what he’s been working towards. Not that confidence is a bad thing, because Ji-sook is starting to find hers, and this change in her could be exactly what Min-woo needs.
EPISODE 10: “Faces of the Mask”
Min-woo comes home unexpectedly from the hospital, catches Ji-sook in his secret room without permission, and screams at her to tell him what she was doing in there. He calms down to ask how she got in, and she fibs that the door was left open. He scoffs at that, since he knows where all the keys are.
Ji-sook insists the door was left open, but Min-woo knows he didn’t leave it unlocked, so he queries the housekeeper then goes to the office to check for his spare key (where Scar is lurking in the hallway, interesting). But the key is exactly where it should be in his safe.
Seok-hoon tells Mi-yeon about one of his first cases, a husband and wife who didn’t trust each other. The husband suspected his wife of cheating, while the wife thought the husband was planning to kill her for insurance money. It was a misunderstanding, but they couldn’t ever regain their trust and their marriage was destroyed.
Seok-hoon mentions their upcoming anniversary, saying to Mi-yeon that he’s glad they don’t have that kind of mistrust. She thinks he’s talking about something she did, and says that she only checked his phone that one time out of curiosity. She tells him he can check her phone whenever he likes. But Seok-hoon benevolently says that he’s always trusted her.
Meanwhile the maid is back to her old tricks, putting mysterious pills in the bottled water, which Min-woo is drinking that night when he notices Ji-sook’s odd behavior. He apologizes for yelling, and she also is sorry for going in the room. Min-woo asks if she’s scared of him, since he nearly killed her once.
In answer, she asks if he’s scared of her because he doesn’t know what kind of person she really is. She says she’s not scared of him, because she does know what kind of person he is, and Min-woo seems touched.
That night Ji-sook hears him moaning in his sleep, and gets up to cover him with a blanket. He becomes more agitated as he dreams about strangling Eun-ha, and when he wakes to see her face so close to his, he flails away from Ji-sook.
He breaks a vase which brings the whole family running, and Ji-sook covers that he was just trying to catch a bug for her. Mi-yeon is suspicious, but Stepmom implies that she’s just happy Min-woo didn’t attack Eun-ha/Ji-sook again.
Papa Choi goes back to Evil Doctor Kim for advice, who recommends that Min-woo be hospitalized before something truly bad happens and he ends up in jail. Ji-sook stops Doctor Kim on his way out to assure him that Min-woo is fine, and he asks if she’s truly worried about her husband, or just what others may think.
He warns her that Min-woo is very dangerous, and despite her memories of him manhandling her early in their relationship, she insists that he’s a good person. She asks how she can help him, and Doctor Kim tells her to make sure he takes his medications regularly.
Ji-sook starts to ask Min-woo later about his medication, but he snatches them away and says that he’s been taking them diligently. He tells her snappishly not to touch his things again.
In his office that day, Min-woo finds a hair on the floor and tries to figure out which female office employee it belongs to. He then finds a fingerprint on the wedding photo he keeps in the safe — I guess being an OCD neat freak comes in handy when you need evidence.
Gossip Girl spreads rumors that they may be getting a new Director due to Min-woo’s instability and bribery suspicion. Ji-sook and Mi-yeon go to the roof to discuss it, but Mi-eon thinks that his quitting work and getting treatment could be a good thing.
Ji-sook is more concerned about Min-woo’s feelings if he’s removed as Director, and pleads Mi-yeon’s help. But Mi-yeon isn’t convinced by Ji-sook’s “nice act,” and reminds her that she and Min-woo don’t have a good relationship. She might be the happiest person to see him brought down.
Mi-yeon reminds Ji-sook of her (Eun-ha’s) words when she first came to their house, that this marriage was a business deal, and that the Choi family needed it more than hers. Ji-sook doesn’t remember, of course, which Mi-yeon sneers is sure convenient, that she always forgets important things.
The rumor mill at the office is out of control, with everyone embellishing Min-woo’s supposed bribing and mental illness, and Mi-yeon finally has enough. She sets Gossip Girl straight, and orders her to spread correct information if she’s going to keep yapping.
Min-woo himself overhears a couple of random office workers talking about him, and Ji-sook shows up in time to see him listening to their nasty words. She calls out, “Director Choi!” loudly and the men are shocked, and Min-woo and Ji-sook end up on the elevator alone.
Min-woo seems outwardly calm but Ji-sook sees that he’s sweating, though he jerks away when she tries to wipe his face. In a breathless voice he says he’s fine, but when they get off the elevator at their floor he’s suddenly dizzy and disoriented.
He allows Ji-sook to take him for a drive for some air, but then he suddenly snaps back to himself and seems surprised to find himself in the car. He wants to go back to work but she talks him into lunch, but it’s her turn to be confused when she takes him to a restaurant where she’s always wanted to go, and Min-woo says he’s brought her here before. Oops.
She disarms his grouchiness with a few pouts and smiles, but he’s not amused when Ji-sook takes pains to make sure the table is precisely set so as not to aggravate his OCD. He thinks she pities him, and asks her not to treat him like a patient. For once she’s not cowed by him, and says she’s his wife, and a wife takes care of her husband.
They’re suddenly called home, where a warrant has been issued to search the premises. Ji-sook remembers the incriminating papers and check that Seok-hoon asked her to plant, and runs upstairs while the prosecutor starts his search.
Min-woo’s father refuses to call in a favor and stop this, sure that they’ve done nothing wrong. He tells the prosecutor that he’s very curious who’s behind all this, throwing a very interesting glance towards Seok-hoon while he says it. The prosecutor swears he’s not on anyone’s payroll.
Ji-sook finds the papers in her closet and starts to tear them up, and when they get upstairs the prosecutor heads straight for Min-woo’s secret room. Min-woo unlocks the door for them, and as they search, Papa Choi is shocked to see all of the articles and photos.
The book that Ji-sook left is clean, of course, but the binding is cut open to reveal a large baggie full of a suspicious white powder. The entire family looks horrified except for Seok-hoon, who only smirks. Mi-yeon notices his expression with confusion, and Ji-sook realizes she was tricked.
The white substance turns out to be the same medication that Min-woo is taking, crushed into powder. They can’t prosecute him for not taking his meds, but Seok-hoon expresses his very deep concern to Papa Choi that Min-woo isn’t compliant with his doctor’s orders. He and Stepmom pressure Min-woo’s father to have Min-woo committed before it’s too late.
Min-woo is despondent, and Ji-sook can only watch him with his head hung in defeat. Seok-hoon finds her to say that everything is going as planned, and she growls that he was right — the powerless are stomped on by the powerful.
We go back to Ji-hyuk’s confession that Ji-sook gave him the money for Mom’s treatment, but he produces paperwork that make it seem as if it was a life insurance payout. Mom refuses to get treated when her prognosis is so bad, and cries that she can’t use Ji-sook’s money.
Ji-hyuk loses it, and screams, “Then don’t! Don’t do anything!” He throws in her face that Ji-sook would be so happy to hear this, and storms out of the restaurant. He gets a text to meet Ji-sook just then, and when she asks after Mom, he asks in return if she’ll stop this act when Mom gets treatment. She says sadly that they need money more than they need her, and that she can’t go back until everything is paid off.
Ji-sook is upset to hear that Ji-hyuk still has the card key to Jung-tae’s apartment, but she uses it to go inside herself. In her mind’s eye she sees him lying on the couch, with Ji-hyuk standing over him.
Seok-hoon joins Mi-yeon where she’s drinking at the bar, and assures her that everything will work out with Min-woo. She asks what he means by that, thinking it strange that they found his pills instead of the bribe proof they were looking for. Very coincidental, since they’ve been discussing sending Min-woo to a hospital.
Mi-yeon changes the subject and asks if Seok-hoon notices something different about her. She’s noticed something different about him, admitting that she’s been paying more attention to him lately, and he looks better to her these days. She reveals that she’s scared that he’ll leave her if he gets whatever it is that he wants.
That night, Min-woo asks Ji-sook if she left the crushed pills in his secret room, and though she didn’t know she was doing it, she can’t honestly say no. He asks why she’s not yelling that he’s unfairly accusing her, and her continued silence is his answer. He goes for a drive alone, and just goes in circles as he cries. He’s finally pulled over, and when the cop asks if he’s lost, he says sadly that he’s not — he just has nowhere to go.
Ji-sook goes back to Eun-ha’s apartment and looks through her old yearbook for her note, “If you wear a mask, you’ll never be happy.” She recalls Min-woo saying once that wearing a mask at least allows you to pretend to be happy, and he’d mentioned that that’s how Eun-ha lived.
She remembers his warm hug that night when they drank together, and his telling the police that she’s his wife and saving her from having to be fingerprinted. Again she sees the specter of Eun-ha and hears her contradictory words that if you don’t wear a mask, you’ll never survive.
Seok-hoon carries drunk Mi-yeon to bed, and notices that she’s crying in her sleep. He meets with Ji-sook who demands to know his entire plan, claiming that if she knows, she can make her own plans. Oooh, interesting.
Seok-hoon finds this amusing and agrees, and informs Ji-sook that a shareholders’ meeting will soon take place to remove Min-woo from his Director position. He’ll be forced to give up being the heir to the company, and will be sent to a psychiatric hospital. His shares in the company will be split between Ji-sook and Seok-hoon.
At breakfast Min-woo admits that he didn’t sleep well, and when Stepmom asks about the pills, Ji-sook pipes up and says that they weren’t Min-woo’s — they were planted there. She looks Seok-hoon straight in the eye as she says this, and it’s AWESOME.
Seok-hoon looks like he swallowed a lemon, especially when Mi-yeon agrees that something seems off. He’s forced to volunteer to question the maids in order to look helpful, but Min-woo says he’ll do that himself. Papa Choi barks that he won’t allow the family to start fighting and deceiving each other, but Min-woo dryly points out that they did all that already. HA.
Seok-hoon offers to drive Mi-yeon in to work, and they run into Min-woo and Ji-sook on their way out. Mi-yeon notices the death glare Ji-sook shoots at Seok-hoon and asks if they’re fighting. To make this scene even more awesome, Min-woo casually hands Seok-hoon the pen he was given as proof of Eun-ha’s and Seok-hoon’s affair, all, “I believe this is yours?” For once, Seok-hoon looks completely off-balance.
Director Shim is waiting for Ji-sook outside the office building, and when she runs from him he actually pretends he’s going to run her down with his car. She falls, and he forces her to come with him, but she says that she already paid him the money he wanted.
Shim says that money was just for Ji-hyuk’s life, and starts demanding more money for her family’s debt. Ji-sook says that she can’t get so much money that easily, and that she had to borrow the other cash from her husband, which gives Director Shim the idea to talk to Min-woo directly.
Shim says that no matter how much she dresses up or who she marries, she’ll always just be Byun Ji-sook — but she counters that she’s not the Byun Ji-sook he knew. She firmly tells him to let her know exactly how much he wants and when, and to be polite about it, and leaves Shim with his mouth hanging open.
Min-woo finds out that Ji-sook stayed late at work that one night, and he notices as she and Mi-yeon leave the office together. This time Mi-yeon takes Ji-sook aside to talk, and tips her off about the shareholders’ meeting. She says that Min-woo is her brother and they can’t let them destroy him like this, but Ji-sook declines Mi-yeon’s help and walks away.
Min-woo sits in his car staring at his wedding photo, ignoring Chang-soo’s protests about having Ji-sook tested with the fingerprint. Min-woo says sadly that he just wants to confirm that it’s not her print, so he can stop being suspicious of his wife.
Ji-sook sees Doctor Kim in the lobby and smiles, but stops herself when Seok-hoon comes down to greet him. She goes back up to the office and sees Min-woo about to take his medication, and runs into his office to stop him. She can’t explain why, but asks him not to take it, and he doesn’t.
A maid lies to Papa Choi that she witnessed Min-woo crushing his pills, and Seok-hoon gives her a telling look when he enters the room just in case we didn’t already know he orchestrated this. He offers to stick up for Min-woo during the shareholder’s meeting, and asks what Min-woo’s father wants. He has to hide his frustration when Papa Choi says that Min-woo is exactly where he should be.
Everyone heads to the meeting, and Chang-soo brings Min-woo the fingerprint results but says that he couldn’t bear to look at them. The office workers are left to wait and speculate, but Ji-sook suddenly leaves the room, and everyone trails after her.
Min-woo sits in the meeting, preoccupied with the test results, and Papa Choi arrives to a flurry of anxious muttering. He announces that he’s not here as a father, but as a businessman. He won’t tolerate his son destroying the company he works so hard for. He says that he won’t overturn the shareholders’ decision today, and only asks them to evaluate Min-woo accurately.
Seok-hoon does as promised and supports Min-woo, particularly mentioning that they shouldn’t consider the bribery allegations in this decision since it’s not been proven that Min-woo accepted any. One shareholder asks about the crushed pills found in his room, concerned that negative press about it could harm the company.
Ji-sook and the other employees wait outside, deciding whether they should enter the meeting room in support of Min-woo. Even Mi-yeon joins them, and asks Ji-sook if she knows anything. She says that Min-woo is her family, too, as everyone’s jaws drop.
Min-woo is given a chance to say something in his own defense, and he gives Seok-hoon a long look, remembering how he offered to question the maids on his behalf. He says that he has nothing to say, and they start the vote.
Alone, Ji-sook enters the meeting room and bows respectfully to the shareholders. She apologizes for interrupting, but she has something to say. “I am Seo Eun-ha, Director Choi’s wife.”
COMMENTS
It’s finally happening! Ji-sook is finally starting to protect Min-woo like he’s been protecting her for a while now, and it makes me giddily happy. I’ve been waiting for this since Episode 2, and it’s as awesome as I’d hoped. I love these two as a partnership almost as much as I ship them as a couple, and I’m so excited to see them consciously choosing to help and protect each other. I love that Ji-sook is getting out of her little bubble of don’t-notice-me comfort zone and sticking up for Min-woo, even in front of the doctor. It’s in keeping with her character, that she’s much more motivated to stand up for those she cares about than herself. I’m just tickled pink that Min-woo is now in that category of “people Ji-sook loves.” Now they just need to take that final step and agree to trust one another, so they can form a solid unit in the face of those who want to bring them down.
I like that Seok-hoon’s actions in this episode are what push Ji-sook to go all Mama Bear with anyone who dares to hurt her Min-woo. It’s deliciously ironic that the harder Seok-hoon tries to control Ji-sook, the more she’s likely to use the information she gathers from him to subvert him at every turn. I believe that her desire to protect those she loves is much stronger than Seok-hoon’s desire for power and control, not to mention that Ji-sook has the advantage when it comes to thinking like a sane person. So although she’s not naturally devious like Seok-hoon, as she said to him once before, she’s fully capable of using what she knows to get what she wants. She may not be the first to get down in the mud, but if she’s gotta go there, she’ll go there.
Ji-sook’s Hurt him and I will end you glares at Seok-hoon in the last part of this episode were my favorite thing ever, and I can’t wait to see more. I’ve wanted to see her fight back for weeks now, and I adore how she tricked him into telling her his plan before dropping her own bomb and blowing it apart. Seok-hoon is gonna have to think fast to outmaneuver Ji-sook now, and seeing him unsure and scrambling for his footing is going to be fantastic.
I haven’t talked about Mi-yeon much, because until this point in the story, her character has mostly acted as a mirror to highlight Seok-hoon’s ability to wear many masks. But I feel like she’s stepping up in the story a lot lately. I actually like her quite a bit, and I do believe her that she loves her brother and doesn’t wish him ill. I do think she comes from a place of selfish motives, because while she hopes for Min-woo and Ji-sook’s marriage to work, it’s mostly because it would get her own husband away from (who she thinks is) Eun-ha. I feel like Mi-yeon is more fragile than she seems, because she’s in such a scary place in her life — trapped a shaky marriage, wanting a baby, unsure of her place in the family heirarchy. She has little to no power, and has to fall back on what small power she has to make Ji-sook miserable, but I think she’s finally realizing that Ji-sook isn’t the cold husband-stealer she thought she was (she just doesn’t yet know how literal that is!).
I worry that, if Mi-yeon is pushed, she’s capable of doing bad things to get what she wants, but I don’t think she’s an inherently bad person. She even defends Min-woo when the office gossips start making up lies (though she lets the true rumors go unchallenged, ha). For that reason I find her intriguing, and I hope she’s about to take a more active role in the main action of the show. She’s got the ability to be nasty, but I feel like that’s mostly a defense mechanism to protect herself against her family who don’t value her, and her husband’s suspicious behavior. And I don’t even blame her for her attitude towards Ji-sook, because in her mind, this is her husband’s mistress now living in the same house with him. To be honest, she’s a lot nicer than I could be in that situation! Better to attack then be attacked, in her mind. But she’s already seeing cracks in Seok-hoon’s perfect facade, and noticing that things around him and Min-woo don’t seem quite right, and is even taking steps to protect her brother. I would love to see Mi-yeon realize that things are not as they seem, and choose to help her brother. So I hope that, despite her perceived history with Ji-sook, the two ladies can also form a sort of team. It’s not a pairing I expect, but if it happened, it would be pretty amazing.

I feel like Ji-sook is finally realizing that the feelings of love and protectiveness she has for her parents and brother are growing to include Min-woo. And once they are 100% invested in each other nothing is going to be able to tear that love apart.
Can't wait for next week!!! Thanks for the recap!!

Im more surprised that miyeon stepped up to defend her brother, not your typical siblings rival. I hope its sincere tho. And yess, jisook finally knows how it works to be badass. I like that they built it little by little to get this point instead of suddenly turn her into savage heroine.

What do you figure she is going to say at the board meeting?
That she's the one who crushed the pills, not her husband? What reason could be offer tho? And wouldn't it put her on a warpath w SH?
Papa Choi seems to know sthg that we don't. His answer to SH right b4 the board meeting was a cryptic: MW is where he ought to be.

That'd be awesome and is something Eunha would have done.
Seriosuly, I've been waiting for her to use EH's power before this. She was supposed to be a really strong woman with political power.

If there's a birth secret and they're identical twins, a DNA test will be inconclusive.
Fingerprint on the other hand (harhar) is totally unique to an individual. If they test her for that, she's going to fail unless she swaps results somehow. :(
I can't believe I'm this invested in a melo-ish show. Haha. I blame Minwoo!

That crushed sleeping pills is so planted! Oh,sheesh, c'mon, ...ok, granted he did that, why the need to crush it and stash it inside a bookbind, why would he go through that trouble if he is saving it for another time. He could stash it under the bed or in some nook in the corner of the room, why hide it in plain sight? Isn't it obvious it was planted? Seok hoon is just such a manipulative mastermind, he can lie through his teeth, without batting an eyelash and in the next sentence at that, truly amazing. When you have everyone in cahoots with you, it is only a matter of time until someone will betray you,tho he is sol smug about it. This guy has gone to the deep end, and for what?
I don't know what motive he has for killing Seo eun ha, what if she doesn't hv a doppelgänger , what would hv happened? I shouldn't hv watched this ,now I am like the rest of you in agony of waiting for the next ep, which would be like 3 days away with subs, of course.

Right! The baggie of powder wasn't just in a hiding spot, it was sealed into the binding. That's not a place he could pull it out, add another day's dose, and close up. It was the kind of thing done to smuggle drugs (which is why I thought it was cocaine at first, that would send him away for a looooooong time in Korea). The most low-key deflection she could do would be to say the book was a recent gift and point out how it was bound.
But really, she needs to corner the doctor and turn him pronto. He is definitely a nogoodnik complete with his attempts to plant false memories of strangling the real fiance.

@ LollyPip Thanks for a great recap!!
I LOLed at this:
"It’s deliciously ironic that the harder Seok-hoon tries to control Ji-sook, the more she’s likely to use the information she gathers from him to subvert him at every turn. I believe that her desire to protect those she loves is much stronger than Seok-hoon’s desire for power and control, not to mention that Ji-sook has the advantage when it comes to thinking like a sane person."
I do so hope so too - that she'll subvert SH and leave him gaping, that her moves will make him make mistakes and make him vulnerable. I too was thinking that if it was just to protect herself, she'd remain quite limp, but once people who matter to her are targetted, she gets into action.
I like how she sat for a long while thinking about the 'mask' she was forced to wear, whether to survive or to pretend to be happy, and how I felt the idea clicked that since she was wearing it, why not, wear the mask to deceive SH. That's when she talked him into giving her information, pretending that she was going along with the business willingly.
I still want to see SH try a couple more jealous one-up-manship moves against MW in order to count for more with JS. Like I said elsewhere, I want to see him fall hard for her and suffer. :D
When I first saw this episode I was almost going 'Yay! evil doctor and drugging the water is back!' LOL! Well those were among the plot devices that got me (us?) invested in caring for poor MW and finding out why he was so victimized. It was also what I was looking forward to happening when Ji Sook was around so that she could discover and subvert this evil scheme (maybe with Mi Yeon's help) and show MW that she sincerely cared for him. I'm hoping we're getting there now! :)

Soo-Ae has some remarkably good things to recommend her for this role: She is absolutely beautiful and she has amazing chemistry with Ju Ji-Hoon.
Soo-Ae has one enormous bad thing to not recommend her for this role: She doesn't know what to do with it.
This is a great role - the writer has given an actress so much to work with - emotional and mental conflict, the effort at portraying someone who you aren’t nearly around the clock, extraordinary situations that would take anyone aback. I would have loved to see what a Gianna Jun, Kong Hyo-Jin, or Yoon Jin-Seo would have brought to it. Imagine the variety of emotions you would have seen on these actresses faces as they struggled between different calamities and unexpected love. I think we would have found a delicious character we all would have rooted for and staunchly defended. If I were Soo-Ae’s agent, I would literally be crying over the squandered opportunity.
And it’s even more sad, because the direction has been so great - even the smallest of character roles (the parents, brother, loan sharks, high school ‘friend’, maid, butler, personal assistant) have been able to shine. See? You remember them all!

This is so very well said. I love it.
Even when she walks into the board meeting, I see no emotion on her face. It is no different from the blankness that it has been for 10 eps, whereas it should show a sea change from her funk-- it should show determination, courage, some nervousness, and some loving concern when she looks at MW, shouldn't it?

@ Susan
I really like reading you! So many good points that you're bringing to our attention.
Which leads me once again to say... if with this lacklustre portrayal we are already so engaged in the show, how much more invested and happy we would be/have been if we'd had an actress as you described. At least our grumbles would have been fewer and not directed at her LOL!
Some of us were saying that her lack of expression could be explained and we have not written her off, but it's interesting to think how, as you say it, an agent would feel, if they had promoted that actor/actress and to see it not fully realized.

Awwww, you're so sweet!
The heartbreaking thing for me is that I really really want to like her. She's just so beautiful and clearly has emotion (well, four - loving, startled, anxious and lost) and her chemistry with Ju Ji-Hoon is delicious - if this turned into a steamy soft-porn I'd actually swoon. :-)
So, why is she frustrating us for 10 episodes? It's not fair! I want her to stop being perma-startled and get in the drama-machinations game and get some with her hubby! :-D Btw, are they really married if she used an assumed identity?

Woah! Good question... I guess it depends on the law of the land. I'd say though that it would be a crime to impersonate someone and to be married in that person's name. Which would probably invalidate the marriage. *sigh* Which makes me more invested in that she only discloses her identity to Min Woo who had better be OK with it.
But wait, what am I saying ... this is drama ... so she'll probably be outed since so many people know but in some magical drama way, she gets to run away (hope it will not be idiotically whether noble or not) and Min Woo will go searching for her and insist of having her back in his life and she'll finally return as Ji Sook and really marry Min Woo after all. Then I'd swoon! :D

Hi GB,
Good script. That's the way I'd like it too, but not before SH falls hopelessly for her, and gets himself all tangled up, in his already tangled mind, and trips himself up, and ends up in a mental institution.
Why do I feel that at this pt in our KD viewing career, we can do just as well as some writers, given the way some dramas have been going lately!
BTW, loving Yeon Jung Hoon as the villain.
And not to forget my Smiley for the day. ?

Thumbs up for your SH arc. Definitely the way to go since he's the one who's actual unhinged. Yes Yeon Jung Hoon is good, however maybe he's not been given enough villainy to act out because I'm beginning to find his hanging around a little meh. ?

Any time you want to endure the frustration of writing a multi-episode arc that stays true to the overall themes, is well-researched, and adequately captures the voices of characters that will inspire audience loyalty and engagement with all the ancillary properties, you're welcome to come over! :-)
It's much harder to write well than you might think.
My thought is that SH will end up in prison - abandoned by his wife - the one person who actually wants to believe in him. That's the one place where he would have absolutely no power - the ultimate punishment for someone who spent a lifetime trying to accumulate it.

Susan,
It IS much harder to write well than we think. I sort of meant that tongue in cheek; however, I don't believe we or anyone can do worse than the scripts for Hyde, J& Me, Warm & Cozy, and Masked Prosecutor, to name just a few recent failures, and those were penned by Seasoned writers! LOL.

This being drama land the twist might be a birth secret that she is really Seo Eun Ha and the wrong child was given up for adoption/kidnapped/sold or whatever happened to send her to the rich family. So "Ji Sook" really is dead and "Eun Ha" signed her real name on the marriage registry without even knowing it. LOL!
The show is crazy, so anything is possible. I know that whatever happens I will enjoy the ride!

Susan, I'm thinking that prison is still not good enough to hold our villain since so many kdramas have them plotting and executing their plots from there. Dear @KDaddict,
I believe SA has a very long acting resume including critically acclaimed films. I keep thinking I would have done the same on tv if I were her: live-shooting, ppl to the max and bizarre ensemble in dramas must reward a movie actor with easy work. Though I do like dramas and do enjoy their minimum length of episodes - especially compared to north american multple-seasons shows and south american telenovelas- nontheless, I still think it's easy money for any actor who's not a rookie nor a young (idol-turned?) actor.

Hi kalel,
I'm sure Su Ae is a respected actress. Just that I haven't seen her in the promotional material for any drama that isn't sad and melo, and I've way overdosed on melo, from my early days of KD watching, beginning w Winter Sonata. Maybe I wasn't paying enough attn. I do know that she was definitely Not a wimp in Athena, which I couldn't finish owing to the repetition of all the explosion scenes. They are all I remember of that show!
Don't know her enough to know her long movie resume. Are u suggesting that she is better in movies, and is on 'cruise control' while making dramas, or did I misunderstand?

Things in cinema work quite differently, imho. In films SA makes the most out of her talent and the way she's able to gaze at her any given co-star whether it's LBH or JCW. What one might find dead-flat (or over melodramatic) in a tv series (considering all those factors I've already mentioned in my previous comment) may very well be a film's strongest card.
To make the long story short, television is a much easier task for a well-established actor and, even though you didn't like Athena enough, we must agree that that project was the one and only SA's role out of the (usual) drama box - where tv productions have put her time and again. Why's that? Because tv entertainment industry considers ratings to be the ultimate goal; therefore previously successful drama projects of any given actor and in any particular genre tend to be followed almost religiously.
kanz
June 27, 2015 at 12:42 AM
I actually think Soo Ae could do much better job here.. but she definitely not the worst actress for this role..
From what I see in earlier eps, Soo Ae have done well to differentiate EH and JS. Well enough that people wouldn't get confused. However, she recently only portrays JS and her character hadn't written well either. JS was beyond frustrating, at least up to ep 9. Other than her scenes with MW, it's kind of aggravating seeing JS seems lost whenever she's with SH, loan sharks, Jung Tae, etc.
It's my first drama (and basically my first project) watching Soo Ae so I have no idea how this actress actually act in her previous dramas/movies. I've just got the impression that the actress could do better job here.

@ Susan,
even though I adore heart and soul the three female actors you're mentioning here, I still can't see JJH (a.k.a Gianna Jun ) nor YJS in this role
It's true that YJS is much bolder in her projects, w/o the usual "fear of nudity" that most female actors suffer from in SK entertainment industry and JJH had stayed away from tv projects for more than a decade (good for her, if you're asking me lol)
SA on the other hand, has (too)many melodramas in her resume so she sounds as a safe choice.
Maybe Kim Ha-neul could have been an alternative , since she had her fair share of melos -apart from comedy- throughout her career.
Last but certainly not least, GHJ can act in almost anything, imho; from delirious comedy to heavy melodramas to even evil characters. She's the best among these names on the table but I seriously doubt she would have returned to the major networks in something like this. I'm soooo luving that she's heading to tvN :-) so long as my once favorite cable doesn't play again the same nasty trick on us ...

I'm on pins and needles here. This is the point I have been hoping for since episode two. I'm so glad they brought back the OCD, evil doctor, and poisoned water back into the story. I'm seriously invested in this show.
My only problem is with the heroine not being able to pass as Eun Ha. Doesn't the fact that she can't pretend to be Eun Ha even in the face of the loan sharks throw a kink in SH's plan? How many people is SH prepared to murder for knowing about the switch? As much as I can understand to her struggling to open up to MW, I find her inability to act like SH frustrating especially when faced with the loan sharks.
And younger brother is completely okay with "almost murder" to get money, but won't take a hand me down from sis? Okay suppension of belief here.

From various KDs that include evil chaebols, it seems like it's relatively easy to commit sb to a mental institution in SK.
If your family is so rich and important, wouldn't you want to get a 2nd opinion and a 3rd before putting your Only son, heir to the empire, on psychotropic medications, which can land him in a mental institution b4 you can blink? Who cares if he is the best known professor in the land for his field? Since when does it hurt to get another opinion, esp as the implications are tremendous for the empire? It isn't as if these ppl can't afford it. Just don't tell me that SH will get to the 2nd specialist too, and the 3rd.
It is very dangerous to bring a viper into your lair when there is so much at stake. First the evil step-mother. Then the even more evil SIL. Marry these kinds, and it'll take a miracle for the chaebol empire to survive.
Come to think of it, does anybody marry a chaebol for Love?

June 26, 2015 at 10:52 PM
Another question ... do chaebol fathers ever really love their children or do they see them merely as a means to keep the money in the family?
We denounced the skewered thinking of the 'I Remember You' father, and I'm thinking the one track mind of chaebol fathers should also be examined. I'm even thinking here of the High Society chaebol father as well as this show's sour puss dad.
These men seem to be living in their own world where child psychology does not exist for them. The child must be strong and smart so that he can inherit and if he is not (according to the father's narrow way of evaluation) he has to be brow beaten into becoming acceptable. No consideration for the trauma of the child who was racked by guilt, shame, horror at seeing his mother die because she tried to save him.
No openness, care or building of trust and relationship with his children, so now even the maid's word rather than the son's will be taken at face value.
The offspring is not a son but only either an heir or not, practically an owned unit who merely has to obey. Don't they ever realize that neither they nor their family are happy and wonder why? So sad.

I think most of the way chaebols are portrayed in k-dramas are the way that the common peons would LIKE to see them, not as they are - a sort of pandering. You see the same thing in US shows - how many (usually bad) movies and shows have been made where some evil military general is trying to be dictator of the world (even though nothing like that has ever happened)?
I suspect that KDaddict's take is pretty close to the real situation.

This drama is gearing up to some interesting possibilities, like:
1. Mi Yeon wising up to her husband's outrageous schemes, and stepping out of her alcoholic state to be at least a thorn in his side, if not a major obstacle;
2. Seok Hoon going bonkers when JS derails his plan, and showing us what lengths he can go to;
Better yet, he can go where we all want him to, i.e. fall for JS in his own twisted psychotic way;
3. MW getting out from under the cloud of med-induced hallucinations on JS's advice, to become the person he really is;
4. and last but not least, have Su Ae wear a different expression, one besides fear and timidity.
Let's keep our fingers crossed that this writer won't fail us like all the others who have done so recently.

As k-netz said, Joo Ji Hoon looks lovely here.. Joovely! <3
As for Min Woo, how do you feel when everyone, and even your father, thinks you're crazy?? I'd be desperate to prove myself NOT crazy.. But he's helpless and the worst part, his doctor also team up with Baddie to corrupt his memory and mind. So he can't possibly function as normal person.. On the other hand, I notice that in ep 3-9, when he's with Ji Sook he looks so fine and normal (it's one of our concerns why his illness didn't appear in those eps). His OCD even not appear as much when he's with Ji Sook. Maybe because he didn't take his medications hence he appears fine? Because whatever the medication is that, it's what makes him hallucinated and having nightmares. At this point, I'm glad Ji Sook realizes the doctor is teaming up with Evil Suk Hoon and can't possibly help MW healed. I hope JS will realize more and more bad things about SH and team up with MW to bring down the villain.

I hope so too. I especially hope she finds out soon that they are drugging his water. I suspect that Seok Hoon eased up on drugging Min woo when he and Ji-sook first got married believing he could use Ji-sook to manipulate Min-woo. Recall how furious he was when Ji-sook poured away the tea he brought and didn't let Min-woo drink it?
He only recently started drugging him again and that's when his disorientation, dizziness and OCD returned with a vengeance. I wonder why dad doesn't go to another doctor for a second opinion before committing his son to a psychiatrist hospital. I wish Min-woo and Ji-sook could just move out of that house and live by themselves, though I know that this isn't Asian culture.
One thing puzzled me, in a house that big, how could everyone hear the lamp break?! It's curious how they all ran into the room like they were waiting for something to happen. Maybe after the near drowning incident, they were on high alert?

Hi Susan
You watched Healer? Great!!! Please tell me (if you don't mind) what was it about Healer that made it good in execution?
As a viewer I was saying all sorts of things about the writing being consistent, the actors being so natural, stuff like that, but I could not pin-point what it was that made the feels stand out so well, what was it in the execution that made that show so addictive and until now, so unforgettable?
susan
June 28, 2015 at 12:30 AM
:-) I don't think it was one thing - I think everything about it was good. Direction, cinematography, editing, soundtrack, makeup, sets, costuming, writing, acting, casting, etc etc. They even had a change of stunt team midway though production that didn't have a serious effect on the outcome (although there was less action in the second half.) In short - let's applaud the producers! :-) Because that was one great team of professionals they put together!
susan
June 28, 2015 at 12:36 AM
And one other thing. Ji Chang Wook just happened to mature and peak as an actor at just that moment. You can see all of the elements of Healer, Seo Jung-Hoo and Bong Sookie in his earlier perfomances in other dramas. He took the best of these and combined them into this three-personality character.
And I think that the reason that he was so easily competent (as in his acting had a kind of lovely ease) is his stage work. Stage actors generally do phenomenally well when they are on screen. I think it's all the practice and focus on body movement that go into theatrical training.
growingbeautifully

Once again dear ? Susan, ? thanks much for giving me your opinion.
I'm glad to say that it very much reflects my amateur one in that I likened the production of Healer to many ingredients that made up a dish ? that was quite perfect or many dishes ? that were put together skilfully that made up a wonderful meal (or something like that... LOL! my memory is not great). It was a meal ? that could have had a couple more side dishes but was already very good as it was.
Somehow we were satisfied ? but never satiated: we fondly continue to nibble on Healer dessert ? on our Ep 20 thread even now. :D

I've noticed that Soo Ae has a lot of fans further down the thread. She has really good screen presence - and that makes a lot of people happy. I'd like to see her do a lot more with the role, but as long as the fans are happy, that's really the most important thing for a drama! :-)

Im so happy JS is taking a real stand now. She has made up her mind and won't back down. I believe in her character despite her faults. So I am very certain that watever trick she has up her sleeve will save her hubby. But I can only imagine how SH will react. He'll get much more worse.
Still, im thinking back on all JS's research and I think she is gearing up to go head to head with our villain. Im an in anticipation for his reaction bc he has been very repetitive these last 2 eps. I want to see some more deep plotting and schemes play out with him. That's kinda sadistic but this is a makjang. Evetything can't be peachy or it'd be boring. What cards will he pull? I await ep 11 for that.
im seeing some character development with MY. I welcome it. Im actually liking her more now. I just hope she sees JS's sincerity and yes, teams up with het. But that will probably happen later. Hopefully, MY leaves SH. He doesnt deserve her.

To be honest I barely know the face of my CEO's wife, or any of the executives' wives in the firm I work in either. It's not like I attend the social functions of the rich where they socialize and I am just an average office worker.
It makes perfect sense that the office workers don't know Seo Eun ha is Min-woo's wife since since she has never been officially introduced to them as such. The average worker is concerned with only what goes on in the office and stuff concerning the business not the private lives of his employers unless said employer is a celebrity whose private life is front page news. The rich also pay a premium to keep their lives private. Recall that the office workers didn't even recognize Choi Min-woo and gossiped about him in the elevator. Just because the family owns the business doesn't mean the members of the family are famous or easily recognizable.

Mi yeon has become my third favorite person in this show after Min-woo and Ji-sook. Seok Hoon is unaware that he let his mask slip in front of his wife. She finally saw the smirk of glee on his face when the drugs were discovered in Min-woo’s room. What surprises me is that no one else has seen his smirks that he wears on the breakfast table in the past other than Ji-sook, and perhaps Min-woo, though he chooses not to respond.
Yes, Mi Yeon, he will leave you when he gets what he wants. Let's just hope he doesn't kill you first. I am often tricked into thinking that Seok Hoon has some feelings for his wife, like when he watched her sleep, but being the cold hearted killer he is, I am not quite sure what his thought processes are.
Has anyone noticed that where Ji-sook formerly looked at Seok Hoon with fear and loathing there is now disdain? Especially when she learned what his plans towards Min-woo are. She's reached her turning point, now she's going to take active steps to protect the people she loves. She no longer fears him. Even the visit to the scene of Kim Jung-tae's murder was to prepare herself.
It really ticked Seok Hoon off when Ji-sook didn't go to him for the funds to pay off the hit men but she went to Min-woo instead, so he already knows she is unpredictable. I don't know what she's planning to say in the boardroom, but I think she's planning to take responsibility for the drugs in his secret room. Is she going to admit she put it there? I'm not too sure. I just hope that this isn't a case of applying medicine after death. It would have been better if she didn't put the book in the room in the first place. Then none of this damage would have occurred.
Chairman dad often looks at Seok Hoon like he knows what Seok Hoon is plotting, but the actor plays it so ambiguously one can't really be sure what he knows and what he doesn't.

@ Adal
I was watching the part where Mi Yeon is drinking but still able to note to SH that it was strange the sleeping medicine should have been found when the search was for evidence of bribery, and they had just been talking about whether to commit MW to a mental hospital. She's becoming a little suspicious and is smart enough to guess that he will abandon her one day.
Yes about the disdain. At least she is no longer giving him the uncertain, scared look. It happened after she reflected on wearing the mask in Eun Ha's apartment. She decided that she would wear the mask but to deceive SH instead.
I like that SH is not getting JS to come to him as he expected, but I wonder what more he will come up with to tie her to himself and to control her.

Thanks for the recap. I actually feel that it makes more sense for JS to be timid and fearful all the time considering her backstory. She has lived in fear and burden most of the time having to deal with the loan sharks and scrunching for money to pay her father's debts. Her choice to become EH wasn't one that was calculated and deliberated but made out of desperation to stay alive and not knowing what she's getting into. Everything happened so fast that she has barely time to process. From a normal person's standpoint I find that believable that she still shudders from the thought of meeting old acquaintances such as her colleagues or the loan sharks for that matter. This is a girl whose lives revolves around the ordinary. Now she has to ease into the life of a chaebol daughter and daughter in law. There are so many social norms that she would not know and she has to live in trepidation that she would be exposed. Yet at the same time she's not given sight on SH's plan. But as many of you have pointed out, she is beginning to rise to the occasion as she realized that she has developed feelings for this man that was a complete stranger. And as she gains more knowledge and awareness of SH's evil plans, the more she is able to find her grounding and hence her moral compass. I'm glad that thjngs are going to get deliciously exciting now that SH realized that she is not a puppet.

It's particularly telling that Min-woo hasn't even glanced at the finger printed results from the NFS. I believe he doesn't want to distrust his wife even though she didn't deny putting the drugs in his room. It would give me some satisfaction to see him trust his instincts but I don't want him to lose faith in his wife. Even when he suspected it was her he still trusted her enough to stop taking his medicine at her request. Not that it would make a difference as those results will show that the fingerprints aren't Seo Eun ha's because she is dead. Do doppelgangers have identical fingerprints I wonder? I think identical twins do.

I was just looking up fingerprints... seems that even identical twins do not have identical fingerprints! Interesting isn't it? Fingerprints do not depend on DNA...but on several things like "bone growth, pressure in the womb, contact with amniotic fluid" while the fetus is developing. Hmmm... learnt a new thing today! ?
I want him to just tear up the fingerprint results and burn them without looking. And then I want Ji Sook to tell him that she did open his safe and why. ?

Ok I'm back for a bit. I was thinking about the show as I went about RL and thought that we are seeing more cases of Min Woo and Ji Sook echoing each other and reciprocating in Ep 8-10 and it's sweet. I just wanted to note them here...
In Ep 9 JS promised to repay MW for his trust, his help and his waiting, and we are seeing in Ep 10 that JS is keeping her word.
I like how she stands up for him again and again against family, office workers, doctor, and she takes him to lunch when he is disoriented and saves him from taking the medicine. It is also interesting (as another comment mentioned) that Ep 9 where he says he is her husband is bookended in Ep 10 when she tells the shareholders meeting that she is his wife. These 2 episodes are meant to be watched back to back.
In their choosing the two restaurants to bring each other to, each denied that they chose the restaurant for the other when in fact that was the case.
In episode 8 to MW's question about what JS's goal was, JS said she just wanted to live an ordinary life.
In Ep 9 JS asked him what kind of person he thought he was on their walk and he too said he was a person who wanted to live a normal life with the woman he loves. What a sweet declaration (why didn't she melt?) But she did reciprocate with a hand on his heart to say that if he still accepted her when she told him what kind of person she is, they could live normally and happily.
Not to mention the cute hospital scene where she chose to change his clothes (and not let the nurses do it), which balances out how he undressed them in the car to battle hypothermia. The cutest was of course offering to feed him, in the same way that he had offered to feed her.
And the trust they have for each other is the best. They ask each other, "Aren't you afraid of me?". He had told Mi Yeon that he trusted JS and now JS tells him that she knows what kind of person he is and is not afraid of him... ie that she trusts him too.
So much to love about our OTP. Just had to list some of these moments. :)

The colour was OK, but I think I was wondering why his suits mostly looked limp (I guess I like suits to look crisp) instead of smart, like everyone else's. But the idea that it was to project a image of maybe vulnerability, of not being afraid to be himself (ie he is the only one dressed differently from the other suited guys) of being soft and malleable rather than stiff and obstinate... Anyway, I'm just guessing because I thought most 'heros' get to wear snazzy suits ? if they are chaebols. ?

I could be wrong on this but I think when Min-woo's father told Seok-hoon "Min-woo is where he's supposed to be", he meant mental institution. Their conversation happened after MW's doctor's recommention to have him admitted into a hospital and right after the maid lied/confirmed that she saw what MW did with his medicines.
I love this episode. FİNALLY, Ji-sook! She might be frustrating these past episodes but seeing her stand up against SK and protect her husband in this episode is worth the wait. Jisook annoys me sometimes but not the actress' portrayal of her. I actually think Soo-ae is doing a good at portraying her. I watched her movie "Sunny" the other night (just to see her past work and also I saw Jung Kyung-hoo's name :D ) and I discovered that she's not just a good actress but a good singer, too.
Thank you for the recap LollyPip. :)

@Giegie
Yes, I sort of had that interpretation of what the father said too. That his son belonged in a mental institution. So sad!!! Such a lousy father! If that's your heir, why aren't you trying to keep him out of the institution instead of believing the worst so easily.
We need the backstory as to why MW's mother and he were running away that night. In one of the flashbacks at his mother's drowning, MW remembered hiding behind a tree when a whole bunch of suited guys were looking for him and his mum. Did the father want to force MW to leave his mother, or was it something worse? Did they set out to kill the mum, perhaps? But why so many guys?
So these are some of the plot points that are missing and which we need to help in our understanding of where the father stands with Min Woo. :)

We don't really know how exactly his mother died. What if MW's memory of how his mother died is also false and planted by the doctor so as to make him feel the guilt of causing his own mom's death and be suspicious of everyone including his father. How long has the doctor been drugging MW btw? And how did Seok-hoon know that MW's mother was wearing the red necklace before she died? And also, I wonder if MW's father married his wife for business reasons.

Come to think of it.... you have a point. We do not know if his childhood memories are true. That's soooo chilling!! Poor Min Woo. Feeling so sorry for him. Yes, this was the feeling that led me to be invested in the show. I wanted the poor boy-man to be saved from his evil family, or better still, to gain confidence to save himself. Ji Sook (ironically for SH who placed her there) is the very person to be MW's ally and help him gain that confidence.
What a satisfying backfiring of SH's plans, to bring about his own downfall by his elaborate schemes. :)

Thanks for the recap, LollyPip!
I really think it's awesome to see JS stepping up in her role. As some of you pointed out, her protective instincts kick in when a loved one is being harmed (as opposed to herself being hurt), so it's great to see JS including MW in that circle of important people to protect. I think her telling MY that MW is family highlights the point she had brought up when she and MW were at the altar and she said that they are family and should be on the same side. Now, we are finally seeing her aligning herself with MW and doing more research about EH to use the mask against SH.
It felt good to see MW sticking it to SH's face with the pen. I hope SH will keep being caught off guard by MW and JS. Go, dagger-eyes JS, go!!
I like all the mirror scenes between what MW does for JS and vice versa. It was especially touching to see JS saying that she's not afraid of MW. I felt bad for JS knowing that she got tricked by SH to plant the book there and the documents & cheque weren't the entire plan. Should've seen it coming that SH would have a back-up plan up his sleeve. Maybe he anticipated that JS might not comply with all his schemes and thought the ground-up powder would cement his case against MW. He probably got Scar to put back that key in MW's safe.
Like some of you said, it's good to see the drugging, Evil Doctor, hallucinations back in the plot. I'm so glad that JS stands up for MW to the doctor and has discovered his connection with SH. I've been waiting for her to tap into the knowledge of all these people who have it out for MW so that she can guard him the way he's been trying to do for her. It's awesome to see that MW still trusts her and immediately stops taking the meds. And when MW wanted to do the DNA testing to disprove JS's involvement, you can just feel how much he wants to keep believing in JS. Him driving off in the car and saying he had no place to go was heartbreaking. Really liking JJH in this role.
MY is becoming a more interesting character and I'm growing to like her more. She really seems to care about MW and has no ill intent towards him. So, I'm curious what she will do what she figures out what her husband has been doing and who she will ultimately side with. As much as she dislike JS because she thinks she's SH's mistress, I hope MY can see JS genuinely cares for MW and perhaps changes her mind and forms a team with her.
The final scene really makes me anticipate what JS will say in MW's defence and how satisfying it would be to see a pissed off SH.

Someone spiced Eun Ha's drink and the consequence was that Eun Ha was in the pool and Min Woo got the hallucination. I think Soek Hoon was alarmed that his plan went wrong. He didn't mean to actually hurt Eun Ha but just used her for his plot. He loves her but not as much as he loves himeself.

I really like the OST by Lyn, and since penning lyrics to songs that I like is a hobby, I've been waiting for more plot development to know the characters better before writing the following lyrics. Thought that's it's a good time now that we've reached the halfway mark and just wanted to share with you guys. ^^
Lyn - Just One Day (English Version)
*Mask drama OST
- Written from the perspective of Byun Ji Sook
Lyrics by: Lisa Tang
2015-06-26
VERSE 1:
I was suddenly thrown into this world
This strange world that was full of lies
I was so lost, so afraid, and so alone
But then, I realized there's you
Even though you were so distant and cold
I can't help but to slowly fall for you
CHORUS 1:
Fly to me just like the wind
Draw me into your warm arms
Just one day, for just one day
If only time could stand still when you're here
I don't want to leave your side
Tears that fall behind this mask
Can't you see you are my family
The only one I can lean on
VERSE 2:
You were a light in my dark world
Your trust in me touched my heart many times
I wish I could tell you all my secrets deep inside
Just wait a little more, my love
I dream of happy times, a simple life
Please help me and don't let go of my hand
*Repeat Chorus 1
BRIDGE:
All the memories that we had
I preciously treasure in my heart
Please hold me close and just believe in me
I just need you with me
CHORUS 2:
Please help me, I'll do the same
Together, we can face this
Let us now, let us now just open our hearts
Let's not hide anymore
Do you know that I love you
Anything, I'll do for you
I long to give you all the love that you have missed
More than just one day

I'm so in love with Ju Ji Hoon. Goong was one of my all-time favorites, but I didn't see any noteworthy performance for JJH after that. To make matters worse, he fell into a bad reputation with his drug case before, so I kinda let him go. I was skeptical about Mask at first because of its intense and almost unrealistic plot, but once I saw JJH's performance, I fell back in love with him AND his character. He is such an outstanding and versatile actor. I loved him in Goong for being the cold and cool type of guy, but even when he portrays an at-the-verge-of-insanity, pitifully chasing for someone's affection type of guy, I still loved him effortlessly. Before Mask, I thought I just loved his character in Goong, but seeing him now in a different light, I just love HIM ---- the mastery of his craft as an actor and how he is able to make people fall in love with any character he portrays. Damn, it made me rewatch Goong just to reminisce my childhood daydreams.

Hi guys I'm just wondering, the fingerprint test that Min Woo asked for on the photo frame would probably fail right????Because it wouldn't match Seo Eun Ha's fingerprints and he will realise that he should have trusted her, and maybe when she confesses that she did put the sleeping pills in the book he will think that she is lying to protect him (because the fingerprints on the frame wouldn't implicate her since they don't match)

Honestly, I'm so surprised at all the negative response Soo Ae is getting. I think that she's actually enhancing a role that I normally would have been frustrated with.
I think the written character choices have been hard to act and agree that she probably didn't do her best because of this, but I've found her acting to be so impressive in a number of scenes. All her characters moments that are wonderfully written she does complete justice to. It's the moments of weak writing and directing that I feel like she struggles with. Perhaps I'm biased because I thought she was amazing in Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs (a rare rom-com gem from 2007).
Rather than thinking I'd like the character better if played by a different actress, I actually think I'd like her far less. I can't imagine anyone but Soo Ae for this role, nor would I want anyone else. Well, to each their own. :)

i'd really love if EH at the next episode use her power to keep MW in his position as director.. but i have this thougt, how if in order to protect him being abused all the time, EH uses her right as the wife to take care of MW. Admitting to all of the stakeholder board that he has mental problems and need to let go his positions and get medical help under her supervision.
when SH thinks that his plan works, MW and EH can stay low untill MW free from all the drug's and hipnosis impact, and at that time together they fight back for the company..
just my wild imagination, while waiting restlessly for the next episode.. :)

I actually thought the same thing! That she might temporarily throw Minwoo under the bus and claim he needs to be hospitalized, in order to get those shares that Seokhoon wants to badly--and then somehow use that to gain leverage of her own in the house and company and go against Seokhoon, all while keeping Minwoo safe and off the radar. I don't know if Minwoo would easily forgive or understand that, though.

Even though the cast is made of great actors and actresses who are doing well to act their role, the story seems too slow and a bit makjang. i.e. the searching of the premises in the past few episodes. Also, in certain scenes (namely when they walk in as a group into MinWoo's special room), I feel like the PD could have done a better job in making the shot feel more organic. When the group walk into MinWoo's special room with that prosecutor, the group looks so awkward that I have a hard time suspending my disbelief.

Hmmm.... an issue with the directing??? In RL, I'd expect that maybe only 1 or 2 people might have heard the noise and then only many seconds later they would knock on the door. They actually should not even open the door to enter, until the inhabitants of the room open the door for them.
So, my guess is that MW's room plus time-constraint could be an issue LOL!!! The room is one of the main 'sets' on/in which many players have to appear quickly, since they are repeatedly shown quickly crowded into the room before they 'act'. So the scene will show everyone's expressions at one time and then be cut. Quite time saving, production wise. ?
There was a comment on how this room seems to be a free for all zone, I too noticed people walking in at any time, sometimes even without knocking. Plus there are cameras covering several parts of the room! They really should move out! ?

@jat
I'm guessing they have started live shooting already so no time to edit a preview for us. I'm not sure if all dramas go into live shooting after a few episodes... that's when they decide whether they need to 'follow' the popular sentiment and whether to change the story or cut episodes etc I believe. :(

@Adal. Im respoding to ur comment re: JS leaving the book in MW secret room. For some reason its hard to get press the reply button on my tablet.
Anyways, my theory regarding JS's decision is this: she knows that SH has cameras in her room. He'd knw immediately if she didn't do as he said. But the only place he has no cameras is MW little room above the stairs. Once Sookie (this is my nickname for JS) got into the room, she didn't waste anytime. She didn't even check out the room. She quickly flipped open the book and searched it. When she finds the construction papers she read it. Then when she hears MW she hightailed it outta there. No one expected him home but SH probably took note of her lie that his secret room was left open. Then he proceeds to make it seem true by 1) getting the maid to confirm JS's lie and 2) getting his evil secretary to place a duplicate key in the safe.
Unfortunately our Sookie didn't expect that SH would have a plan B and also conceal MW's meds in the books casing.
Actually Adal, when I think abt it, wasn't it after MW saw JS leaving his room, that he recalls the tale of the mistrustful couple to MY? Additionally, he was on his computer in that scene. He was probably creepily watching them. That seems to be his hobby. In his tale he did note that the couple had nothing to be mistrustful for but mistrust had ruined their marriage anyway.
Sometimes I wonder if SH knows wat he wants. He is self-destructing and doesn't knw it. As far as h's concerned, he holds the cards. Sadly for him, JS will be his kryptonite if his wife doesn't get him first.

You raise very good points Camille W. It is true that JS knew SH would probably be watching her through those hidden cameras and the maids he had co-opted. She thought she'd taken care of things by removing the check and forged documents. She didn't know SH had a plan B. As much as I dislike SH, one can't help admiring his ingenuity. He's an evil genius, isn't he?

Wonderful analysis. I'm sure SH had spoken to the maid to confirm the lie with MW and instructed Scar to put the key back in the office safe. If SH knew to do this from watching the cameras, that makes a lot of sense.

I have to say that I believe that is what happened too. I didn't catch on about how JS would figure that it was only safe to check the book in the secret room, but yes, it makes sense. Unfortunately MW came back so soon. I wonder if she'd have noticed that the book box-cover was strangely heavy without the book in it. If she'd had the chance to check it, she might have been suspicious and removed it.
At least this book scene with a plan B, recalls how smart SH was before. I used to think him a creative and intelligent villain until recently.
About mistrust between a married couple. On the one hand SH told JS to win MW's trust, but at the same time he is sabotaging it by getting her to incriminate MW. And he is sabotaging himself because he's jealous! LOL.
SH is also talking to his wife about trust, hinting that she should trust him, but again he does not do enough to earn her trust, when he knows full well that she is doubtful about him. I want to see him tie himself up in knots with all his scheming... then JS won't even have to do much to take him down, he'd do it all by himself. ?

I don't understand why people complaint about JiSook. JiSook is an honest girl, happy living a normal life with her family, no ambitions whatsoever. Now she has to lie and living as another person that she has no idea what that's person like. How would one expect a person can just change themselves completely in a short time? I understand her, she lives with a guilty conscience, her feelings kept to herself. She is freak out when she sees Jung tae or the loan shark guy, where's the mind to be acting but just want to get away from them. Eun Ha's diary isn't much help either. All in there is photos and the sentence 'if you wears a mask you wouldn't be happy'. How much can one understand from that? JiSook isn't smart either, what is she to do? Want to be honest but can't, want to wear the mask still not right. Situations can makes her strong but will never be like Eun Ha, they are completely opposite. One is full of confidence and one is none.
For me I think her determination came when she sees Min Woo hopelessly sat on the couch after the drug raid. For Min woo she will change.
@chandler... THANK YOU.
Soo Ae has some most beautiful emotional scene and people said she can't act. And Joo Ji Hoon has all the character of Prince Charming and everyone thinks he's great. I think they all good. But different character needs to act differently. Soo Ae is also one of the reason Ji Hoon picks this project. He believes and respect her as an actor.

I totally agree. I think if we put ourselves in JS's situation, we'd be so fearful and bewildered. It's hard to keep up pretenses to be someone opposite from one's personality when you're doing it under "normal" circumstances; i.e., just for fun or it's a white lie. But to be a completely different person when you've got a lunatic watching your every move through cameras and threatening you with your family, when you're worried about your mom's health and your brother's safety, when you want to help your husband and tell him the truth but can't, etc. There's so much stress and anxiety with everything going on and living with a bunch of strangers in an unfamiliar home. It'd be amazing just to stay sane.

I think the fingerprint somehow will fall into play as minwoo way of finding out about ji sook. It will be a clue at least. He will know the truth with conflicting emotions after he confronts her. He will probably remember about her bringing him to hospital and hotel scene. In which it will break his fake memories from resurfacing after not taking any meds nor water. Plus he will remember that he did not kill eun ha. Ji sook will be there by his side revealing the truth. It will make their relationship even stronger to beat the villains together.

basically some things:
- Jisook study Eunha's yearbook and imitate her handwriting repeatedly. she's starting to get the hang of it.
- "Minwoo is also my family."
- Miyeon state that she is one of those who should be ecstatic at Minwoo's dismissal, but then at the coffee shop. Class A tsundere? ^^
- Minwoo only stares at the test result and doesnt give any fuck to the Board of Directors. I guess only two things matters to him right now: Jisook and his late mother.
- when Jisook barge in. Minwoo's eyes: he has snapped back to reality.
when this show end I won't have any idea what to do with my life.

Then in the case of MY, we are hoping that she will be tsundere more towards JS... ie she will turn from cold and combative to warmer and reluctantly liking JS, you think? The indications are there already. ?

I hope she will even warm up to JS too! Yess the fact that MY actively sought out JS to discuss MW's future is a good sign.
Tsundere's well in manga/anime, from what I know are really easy to predict once you get a grasp of their personality. Maybe because SH knows MY's personality so well he can easily fool her?
Omg imagine MY, MW, JS teaming up together to get SH down, that would be one hell of a show down.

It might be hard, emotionally, for MY to take her husband down. If she genuinely likes him, she won't easily turn into trying to hurt him, rather she'd look for another way to protect her brother or try to compromise. However, if SH turns against her directly, that may be a different story.

So I decided a few days ago that I'd rewatch the first 3 eps again just bc I feel like there were sum clues there. Usually we miss sum things when we watch the first eps, esp crucial detailsvwe might need to remember. Seeing ep 1 again I sincerely believe that Soo Ae is not at fault w her acting. She did quite well in the first ep. But then one might note that she had to pull off a variety of emotions, playing EH and JS. She played both distinctly and pretty believable imho.
Anyway, idk wat happened since ep 1 but it was a really good opening ep. It had much more action and comedy. It was crazy and over the top and well, fun. I guess once the story progressed the show got more serious. One thing I hadn't realized is the fact that it was that evil maid that put a pill in the wine bottle b4 pouring it for EH. EH drank little sips here and there but then MW took a swig and eventually drank it all (if im not mistaken).
In addition, the looks exchanged by EH and SH not so covertly struck me. She looked at him with surprise, longing and pain. Im wondering if SH ever told her he was married. The way she looked at him just screamed silent pain. And the way MY treatedher during her dinner/lunch w MW said that she knew abt his affair and hence hated EH. But knowing EH, EH stoked her jealousy by stating hw the Choi family needed her.
And even in this early ep MY appears as sum1 who didn't want the company. She was concerndd when abeoji Choi wanted her bro to marry so quickly. Can I just say, even then MY and SH's relationship looked toxic. Everyone of us can agree that thaf kissing scene btwn them was awkward.
Anyway, back to the dining scene. It seems that whoever wanted to drug EH didn't plan on involving MW since his wine was nvr tampered with. But I doubt that the plotter cud've foreseen everything that resulted aft
