Joo-won, Kim Tae-hee get their nemeses in SBS’s Yong-pal

Jo Hyun-jae, Jung Woong-in, Jo Bok-rae

The plot thickens for SBS’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday series Yong-pal, which is described in somewhat bemusing Engrish as a “spectacle unique melodrama,” which I’m taking to mean intensely dramatic and spectacle-filled. The show did undergo some rough waters when its director was switched, but now seems to be settling down, its casting complete as the production readies to begin filming.

Joo-won was cast early on to play the lead role of a brilliant surgical resident who resorts to taking on illegal backdoor cases for cash, offering his medical services to the wealthy in order to pay for his sister’s expensive dialysis treatments. He’s drowning in debt and willing to do anything for money, which puts him in the unique position of being privy to some shocking, scandalous goings-on amongst the moneyed elite.

Among those he encounters is the “Sleeping Beauty” played by Kim Tae-hee; she lies in a prolonged coma on the VIP floor of Hanshin Hospital, put there on the orders of her very own (half-)brother, the Hanshin Group chairman (Jo Hyun-jae has confirmed the role). She’s the first in line to inherit the chaebol group, but oppa ignored Dad’s will in order to take over, and keeps his sister conveniently out of the way in her VIP suite. Jo has spend a career mostly playing good (if sometimes cold or brusque) guys, so I’m looking forward to seeing how he manages a full-on villain. I’ve never felt Jo pushing his abilities quite as far as I’d like him, stretching himself beyond his safe zone, but I want to see if he can expand that range here, like Yeon Jung-hoon’s doing in Mask or Go Soo did in Empire of Gold.

Jo’s character is married to Chae Jung-ahn (Prime Minister and I), who seems like a calm chaebol wife on the surface but keeps an uncannily close eye on the goings-on of that VIP wing. There’s also Jung Woong-in (Pinocchio, Endless Love, I Hear Your Voice) to once again tap into his creepily villainous side as the surgeon in charge of the VIP floor who put Kim Tae-hee in her coma in the first place. She’s watched over by a nurse with a “chilly charisma,” played by musical actress Bae Hye-sun.

Then there’s movie actor Jo Bok-rae (recently famous for his turn in C’est Si Bon) as the chief of surgery who initially takes a liking to Joo-won’s resident character. However, that changes at a certain point and the relationship takes a turn as he becomes a love-to-hate type of character. It doesn’t sound as though he’ll be a serious villain—a constant pest, maybe—though he has the potential to do some damage since he knows about Joo-won’s illegal side activities, which for now he remains silent about.

The supporting cast also includes a detective who chases the elusive “Yong-pal” (Joo-won’s code name when visiting patients), the gangster whose life he saves, and the loan shark who holds our hero’s immense debt. Sounds juicy.

Yong-pal will premiere in August on SBS.

Which is amusing since I've mostly seen him in comic roles - the fact that he can do either w/ aplomb is a credit to his talent as an actor (he's also pretty entertaining in variety).

oh, I have liked him so much in every kind of role. he can also play "miserable loser" like no other. but after IHYV everyone is like: "A CONVINCING villain? Only Jung Woong-In!" cause he also has this everyguy face while for example Shin Sung Rok looks, well, pretty extraordinary.

Still in the NOOOO camp... well aware that it is what it is.

I'm in no camp too but for completely different reason. *Sigh*

I had a bad feeling that Jo Hyun Jae will take this role because he wants to change his image so badly and has been trying to be a baddie which sadly means 2nd lead role. And there is Kim Tae Hee, it's been ages since they did a project together. I don't think he would be immune to the lure of the reunion. *Another sigh*

What can I do now? At least this drama has Jung Woong In.*Take a deep breath*

Loved Joo Won in Gaksital, but I've never interested to watch his movies after that. This time, the plot sounds quite interesting. Plus, the nemesis is Jo Hyung Jae. I like JHJ .

This is gonna be interesting .

Have you seen King of Baking, Baker Kim Takgu or Gakshital "Bridal Mask" or Good Doctor?? All of these were pretty good dramas.

Try to watch Gaksital first.

I almost didn't finish Gaksital because Joo Won played an utterly unlikeable character the first 6 episodes. And then it had a bad ending.

So, I wouldn't be surprised if people don't like it too much.

LOL at that that English description. If they actually title the drama as that, I'd die laughing.

"Which puts him in the unique position of being privy to some shocking, scandalous goings-on" - suddenly, I'd like to see a dramaland version of this instead of a Chaebol one. But romcom fantasies apart, I love how intense it sounds. I expect the drama to be solid, but who knows what we'll get from SBS. I'm excited either way.

I think we can't get away totally from Chaebol stuff because it is usually the rich and/or famous who cannot risk washing their dirty linen in the public. I do hope that the writer offers other interesting cases like celebrities, sportsmen and public figures. I see that gangsters are already written so that's positive.

They should have changed Kim Tae hee and not the director. she will ruin everything...

Based on what?

Only watched a bit of "Jang Ok-jung" - but based on those who had watched the entire series, KTH did a pretty decent job acting in a sageuk.

Prior to that - her last Korean role was in "My Princess" which she knocked out of the park (both the comedic moments and the dramatic, emotional scenes).

Now, maybe this type of role isn't best suited for KTH, but based on her recent work, not fair to summarily dismiss her and assume that she will ruin the show.

Aside from the usual top actresses for romcoms (Gong Hyo-jin, Jung Yumi, Shin Min-a), the best acting in romcoms have come from much-maligned actresses like KTH in MP and Lee Yeon-hee in "Miss Korea" (those were better performances than what some popular/well-regarded actresses have done in romcoms).

I have to say I love the actors playing the villains.

2nd note I love that we have no young 'uns ( shall not mention their alternate jobs ) to distract me with their bad acting.

Not if only the writing doesn't suck. Or the directing or director does their job- we're all set.

Can't wait.

Well, well after Yeon Jung Hoon as delicious evil villain Suk Hoon in Mask, we'll have Jo Hyun Jae here..
Well, after no news and no project for him for about a year, Jo Hyun Jae as villain chaebol half-bro is better than nothing!

I was about to give this a pass because I've never been particularly interested in medical dramas, but after seeing that Jung Woong-in was cast in it, I've become curious. I may give this a try then.

He's such a great actor and I've enjoyed most dramas he has appeared in so far. I remember getting to know him mostly through his role as a villain, so when I watched "Last Scandal of My Life" (a rom-com-like drama), I was really surprised who nice and pleasant his character was. I really liked him then and it made me forget how much I hated the guts of his previous characters. Ir's impressive how versatile his acting skills are.

JWI is equally adept at comedy (both film and dramas).

He played an annoying character in "Coffee House" - but one that was totally hilarious (w/ a less talented actor, would have been just annoying).
