Lee Jin-wook says no to Hello Monster, maybe to In Time With You remake

This is a good-news-bad-news situation, but I’m feeling fine because I think the good news is stronger: Lee Jin-wook has dropped out of the romance-thriller drama Hello Monster where he was to play a police profiler, but is now in the running to do the In Time With You remake drama, The Time I Loved You, 7000 Days.

So he may not romance Jang Nara as a fellow cop colleague, but he might get to fall in love with Ha Ji-won as his longtime best friend instead? Sign me up.

Both dramas sound promising on their own merits, with Hello Monster coming from the writer of Protect the Boss and based on the unusual-sounding plotline where one man and the woman who stalks him end up working together to fight corruption. Okay, so the stalking thing is a little discomfiting, but it could be interesting. I’ll be watching to see who steps into Lee Jin-wook’s vacated shoes, although admittedly with him out of the picture, my interest is put a little on hold.

With The Time I Loved You, 7000 Days, I’m pretty much in regardless of who plays the leads because I love the premise where lifelong friends spend years setting each other up with dates, are always dissatisfied with the matches, and belatedly realize it’s because they’ve been in love all this time. Casting Ha Ji-won (still not yet confirmed) and Lee Jin-wook would shoot that interest even higher, because they’re both actors who bring extra energy to their roles and have a way of making them their own.

Furthermore, Lee Jin-wook hasn’t done a rom-com in a while, and the ones he has done (I Need Romance 2012, Myung-wol the Spy) haven’t really done it for me. I actually think he had way more sexual tension and romantic chemistry with the co-stars in his non-romance-centric action/thriller shows (Nine, Three Musketeers), so I’d love to see him take his (new-in-recent-years) rascally charm and apply it to a straight-up rom-com.

The Time I’ve Loved You, 7000 Days will air on SBS as a 16-episode drama and has not yet fixed on an air date.

I don't think WHIB had the worst ending ever. It was tragic, but quite fitting for it. Actually quite realistic, more so than a happy ever after ending, if you consider how messed up JIS's character got. He was totally obsessed and jealous. Also, they were all so messed up there was no way they could have a happy ending.

Oh I loved So Ji Sub and Jo In Sung and Ha Ji Won in what happens in Bali. It's tragic but their love for ji won is intense. I can't choose between the two.. It's one drama that whoever she end up with is ok.

Off topic, but I loved gong Yoo, or Ji Chang Wok or anybody they paired up with her will be awesome.. Though I still can't get over my Empress Ki OTP.

Thought they'll go for a bigger name for the drama. Gong Yoo... Why does he have so many movies to do?

I do not think she will take it on unless the male lead either a big name one or well thought of as an actor lol they often two seperate things after all. I guess she could do another save a station from embarrassment like she did with Mr Baek if it gets that bad. But really I can not see her giving up other offers just in hope they get thier act together. As for Lee jin-wook I hope he has a firm offer or he may end up missing out on both, he hardly a big enough name one would think to put up agaisnt Ha Ji-won, indeed one could say the same with Jang Nara when you think she be taking second lead rather than sharing it, from the shows description out so far.

Not that I don't like the current casting efforts, but I would love to see Jang Na Ra paired with Lee Jun Ki in Vampire Scholar, and for Han Groo to do this drama with whoever they cast.

Maybe Shin Sung Rok?

I think so, too. Don't see Ha Ji-Won as Chen You Qing...but I'm actually hoping the Korean remake will outdo the Taiwanese one. Hoping the Korean one will be more tightly edited, and feature no or little makjang.

Oh such a bummer! I was really not feeling him and Jang Nara but even more so, him and HJW. There were so many actors suggested but this one's just unfortunate for me since I've never been fond of his acting. Wish they courted Gong Yoo or Go Soo. If only Hyun Bin and Jang Hyuk weren't busy, they'd have been so awesome. Lee Jin-wook just dropped my expectations four notches down.

But... This also means I can now look forward to Hello Monster even if it has such an odd premise. Get Jang Nara an awesome costar and I'm so in!

I can see him on the basis of "Someday" where he had a very gentle sort of character in a way... except that I think he looks too mature and he wouldn't be convincing in the earlier years/flashbacks of In Time We You.

Ha Ji-won I could see play younger, same as Gong Yoo.

I still have my reservations about this drama because of the issues I had with the Taiwanese version, though LJW (or someone like Gong Yoo) might make me give it a try for a few episodes...

Is the drama really that good? I watched some of the clips on youtube but I think it just so-so. That's why I don't get why many got so hype about it.

Nowadays korean dramas seem lost their creativity on story line. The writers keep adapting from manhwa (anime)/ webtoon/re-make/ story about vampires/story about chaebol/story about split personalities.

Why no writers interesting to explore more about scientist (since korea is one of the famous country about science and technology), life of politicians or army? XD

When it comes to the occupation of characters, well, it's much easier for a writer to write about what they know.

Writers are writers, they have a pretty good idea how people in the creative industry work, but they have to do research to come up with plot tropes for character arcs when the characters are neither from "their" background (writers, artists, actors, other creative people like chefs or fashion designers) or the stock repertoire (medical doctors, chaebol management geniuses etc.).

Of course, writing stuff that hasn't been written 1000 times before is also risky, and K-drama doesn't like to take risks. Once a show actually takes some risk and gets away with it, it's instantly copied to death (e.g. "It's okay, it's love").

Required fields are marked *

I think this is something that comes down to the k-drama industry not being willing to take risks, or not being particularly open to trying new horizons / different genres / fresh characters.

You get a whole lot more diversity in j-dramas, to the degree that it sometimes feels like those writers take particular joy in pulling a completely random profession (or idea) out of a hat and then go from there. Not all of them succeed of course, but you do get real gems from this randomicity. (My most recent find: Suika which is about four women sharing a house – a student, a 27-year old erotic manga writer, a 34-year old bank clerk and a 50+ something anthropology professor. It's such a fabulous combination of characters but it's not something you're likely to get in a kdrama because they just stick to male/female 20/30 something leads plus male/female 20/30 something love rivals combo.)

@You – I don't seen adaptations necessarily as a lack of creativity (there are many diverse manhwas/webtoons/dramas they could use as their starting point), but sadly they seem to stick mostly to the same kind of stories or characters (rare exceptions: when something like Misaeng comes along).

I agree that K-drama is especially averse to variation of well-trodden paths (let alone originality), mostly because it doesn't really pay off. K-drama productions trained their audience well enough that, most of the time, when they do something not exactly along the narrow guidelines of the K-drama genre, the audience doesn't accept it easily (combine that with the short feedback cycle in live shooting, et voila ...)

Hi alua, I just wanted to say thanks for the mention of Suika. It sound interesting so I will be checking it out and was wondering if you have any other J-dramas that you would also recommend. Recently, I've watched Mondai no Aru Restaurant and loved the girls characters and interactions. Please excuse my bad English. And thank you!

As to Lee Jin-wook yay yay I've been waiting for him to do a rom-com. Please let it happen drama gods.

I don't think it's that great a drama, despite all the love its getting – it's certainly better than many Taiwanese dramas (with the majority I personally fail to last even a single episode) and I think what it has going for it is two were likeable actors who had great chemistry between them. And didn't go for overacting, which is something that sinks quite a lot TW-dramas.

The story wasn't anything particularly new, and the characters weren't either – but Ariel and Bolin managed to elevate them to something that I guess many people loved.

I think many things were definitely lost in translation, as one of the drama's strongest point was its smart, thought provoking dialogues. The actors themselves also provided much depth and charms to the characters. Then, there's almost a modern art feel to the drama at times, making it fresh and classy. This is why I didn't/don't think it's going to succeed as a remake, but might be willing to give it a try if Ha Ji Won confirms. However, it definitely comes down to the quality of writing and directing.

I agree - after hearing the news of a Kdrama remake of a Taiwanese drama, I checked it out. I'm now a big fan of ITWY - not so much of the storyline or the plot changes, but angle it presented and the subplot and how the even the littlest nuances were tied into the overall drama. It felt really good watching something well thought out.

Like the part where there was a play within the drama which acted harbinger for both Da Ren and You Qing if they don't take the leap...

Or the little bits and pieces of Da Ren's and You Qing's personal lives that shape who they are as well as elevate the love story to be about how we affect each other...

Or moments that Da Ren and You Qing share in the earlier episodes brought back as part of later ones...

As for the actors, I'm impressed with Ariel strong but vulnerable portrayal -I'm a fan of Ha Ji Won, but I don't see her pulling that off.

As for Da Ren, it's funny, Bolin played Jin Wook's character in the remake of Miss Granny; but when I see Bolin, I'm reminded of Gong Yoo.

Thinking about remakes into Kdramas, they tend to be more flashy - more about the sparkle than substance, I just hope this time I'm proven wrong.

Just saying. In this drama, there were a lot of talking, talking, talking and most the dialogues were provide by Ariel and Bolin. From what I know, Song Hye Kyo and Yoo Eun Hye is definitely can take the role (since I saw them in Full House and Coffee Prince that always bickering with their male lead). So, I'm not sure about Ha Ji Won. And for Male lead, I think Gong Yoo (from several of his dramas) and Eric (from his drama Que Sera Sera and Discovery of Romance) which those dramas full of heavy and long dialogues, could pull the male lead role easily.

Let's see..

Oh man. I have nothing against him personally but I was getting all excited for a possible Ha Ji Won + Gong Yoo pairing. (Although, IDK why when no official news hinting to that possibility was ever released. Maybe I just got too carried away by everyone suggesting it.)

I haven't seen Nine. The only thing I've seen Lee Jin-wook in was INR2 and I found him sort of 'meh' in it. I want them to secure some other big name actors for the ITWY remake, someone HJW's age. Or if HJW doesn't sign on, they could get Jeon Ji Hyun to do it and I'd be fine, too.
