Jang Nara considers Hello Monster opposite Lee Jin-wook
by girlfriday
I don’t know about you guys, but I like this week in dramaland news. Some of my favorite actresses are lining up new projects left and right, and suddenly the rest of 2015 is looking a little brighter. If all goes well, Jang Nara (Mr. Back, Fated To Love You) might be headlining the new KBS drama Hello Monster this summer, and if this first round of casting news sticks, she’ll be starring opposite Lee Jin-wook (Three Musketeers, Nine). That’s a pairing I could get used to.
Hello Monster is the new KBS series from the writer of Protect the Boss and All About My Romance and the PD of God of the Office. It’s a romance thriller, which sounds weird, but I guess a story about people solving crimes and falling in love while they do it is basically a romantic thriller.
Lee Jin-wook has been cast as a criminal profiler who keeps to himself and uses his sharp eye to analyze crime scenes. He was once a police consultant in New York, and eventually heads up a criminal investigations team in Korea. The thing I can’t quite figure out is that the drama is said to be about a dangerous man and the woman who stalks him, and the two of them falling in love as they solve a crime. Maybe Lee Jin-wook is a dangerous rogue profiler?
Even funnier is the fact that Jang Nara is being courted to play a cop, which TOTALLY changes that whole “she stalks him” business, if yunno, she’s a cop! Kind of an important distinction, no? Still, the wording makes me wonder if she’s a cop who also stalks her crush, or if she’s just suspicious and not stalking, so much as investigating enthusiastically. She’s a member of the special criminal investigations team, where she’ll be forced to work with Lee Jin-wook while constantly bickering.
While the story details confuse me, I like the idea of the pairing, and seeing Jang Nara in a role outside her usual cute safe zone. It’ll admittedly take some getting used to, believing that she’s a badass cop, but I’d love it if she could pull it off.
Hello Monster was originally looking at the post-Blood slot on KBS Monday-Tuesday, but School 2015 has been scheduled there instead, and Hello Monster will follow it in June.

Not her usual role, but that's good right? I thought she has been accepting supporting lead roles because she was starring opposite veterans, but apparently not. And I thought the broadcasting stations will give her her own drama after last year, something like Babyfaced Beauty, but no again. She was probably offered this since she's always been doing well against competition, and they are going up against a mega MBC sageuk at that after all.

well no one really confirmed they going to take it on be it Lee Jin-wook or Jang Nara, but KBS may be seeing her as again the one to help them out as she did with Baby Faced, her recent run of dramas may not be in the mega hit class but they where all certainly hit class and more important money making. There where some grumberling with Mr Baek in the fact she was almost a third lead in that drama and the need for her to take on dramas that put her at lest level with the leading man like Fated or her talents are wasted. But she said in the past she happy to take on any role as long as it interesting, and while in this drama she may not be the fem fatale she half joking said she would like to play one day, she gets to play a cop and one hopes a badass at that, so that may sway her to take it on. Frankly I was certain her next work would be in China, though she did a cameo in the one between fated and that one off mini drama, that has just gone to air in China, of course Hello Monster is still months away so there still time for her to do a drama in china before that.

I think if she didn't do FTLY, Mr. Back would have been horrible. At least now she's in MBC's good books (and she has been in KBS's since her comeback), which means more dramas. Yay! If only SBS can reach out to her too, her last drama with them (ages ago) was a huge hit. And even if SBS prefer trendy stars, there's been a nostalgia wave sweeping across K-entertainment so there's no harm getting a star who is always likable and was huge in the past. As for Chinese dramas, I don't think they are a good idea.

Jang Nara has a lot of endorcements going on in China, she needs to do at lest one thing a year there to keep her in the puplic eye and not risk losing them, they allow her to do just what you want, more korean dramas that really only pay a fraction of what she can get for a chinese drama, you have to remember she is her own boss and she the one paying for her stylist, managers and what not and not some big production company. Yeah SBS if only to get her a go at Running Man..lol

Well, that's true.
Anyway, by SBS I don't mean Running Man but their dramas.

she was 4 lead to me in I remember you. So so out of the story. her character was rather annoying and didnt add anything to it. Her best is FTLY, she should stick to those kinda dramas and consider not being paired up with semi youngies like SIG

Aww... that means no comeback for Teacher Nara in School2015.
I like the extra details revealed about the plot though. IF she's a policewoman, maybe the "stalking" part is more of the "I'm watching you because you look suspicious" type. Watching him shower is just a bonus! (Hey, gotta be thorough. What if he's building bombs inside the bathroom???)
I'm curious about Jang Nara playing a cop though. She always looked fragile and tiny. She's played characters with a strong heart before, but, well, methinks you have to be tougher *physically* to be intimidating, no?

But if they get her to star in the follow up drama, that means it's likely that she'll make a cameo. Stars are not in the habit of doing sequels to dramas like School, so she was never coming back. At least now we've got a potential appearance. Maybe they'll invite Choi Daniel right before enlistment too.
Anyway, about the physique... I'm willing to look at the drama. If she manages to change her image with this, I'll seriously be able to watch anything she stars in. She's charming, but if she can be a badass too that'll be awesome.

Daniel Choi is enlisting?? Oh he is born in 1986, which makes him (almost?)thirty in Korea.
I am not worried about her appearance as a cop, she did play a bad-ass teacher, why not a cop? And Park Ha-sun looked legitimately like a cop, and she resembles Jang Nara a lot. Hope she signs on.
So much good news in dramaland lately, it's like I'm dreaming- someone pinch me. xD

Daniel Choi hasn't enlisted yet? T________T
I thought he was 32 two years ago! I dunno... he just seemed like a huge, very buff guy so I assume he already came from the army.

If Daniel Choi hasn't enlisted yet, he'd have to this year. All the 86ers are enlisting this year, like Jaejoong, Yunho, Yoochun, etc.

Hahaha I can't imagine her as a policewoman with that tiny physique of hers. Aigoo.
She is so tiny and baby faced. I'm so jealous. But idk... about her as a police seems a bit off her usual character. If she can pull it off, then I'm in!

I know this sounds oxymoronic but I'd be on board if the writer was GG14's. Then I'd be assured my thrills and with a good cast I'd be assured the romance. Romantic thrillers are a usual thing, and furthermore they're MY thing, so this wouldla/mighta/please-a be a dream. Very tentative.
I'm cool with Jang Nara even though I've never finished her dramas. I'm all for actors stepping up their range. And in one way or another LJW is convincing with his costars. Even if I don't get his attraction, I believe it's there.

I'm still confused about the plot too, but (with a different writer, sorry I may not let this one go) it might not change the stalking thing. Ethics of Wrath (An Ethics Lesson) anyone? Not in KBS' wheelhouse, but if they took that route with her stalking THAT would be a statement piece, no? Probably won't, that clashes with her image TOO much.

I'm not feeling the pairing too much, but I'm more concerned about the weird premise. Jang Nara is awesome so hopefully this is good because I'd hate to miss out on her like I did with Mr. Baek.

Jang Nara as a badass cop? YES PLEASE! One thing I hate about the roles she picks is that she's always this placating pushover. I want her to be a wisecraking badass. Hits first and asks questions later and preferably with her favorite beer and snacks in hand.
