Su Ae considers return to dramaland in SBS’s Mask

Turning down that movie with Rain might not be such bad news after all, because now Su Ae (Yawang) is looking at the small screen for next project. She’s being courted to headline SBS’s late-spring Wednesday-Thursday series Mask, the newest drama from the writer of Secret. A hit melo writer with a melodrama heavyweight like Su Ae is a match made in heaven, though selfishly I’d like it if Su Ae broke up the string of tears for some laughs and/or badassery more than once a decade.

Mask comes from the writer of Secret and the PD of Heirs (one of two writers and one of two PDs on both shows), not to be confused with the new drama from the writer of Heirs and the PD of Secret. Now I’m imagining writer-director partner-swapping backstage drama; quick, someone write a TV show about it.

There isn’t a whole lot to the story description so far: Mask is about people who live wearing masks to hide their true faces. Su Ae has been offered the leading role of a woman who lives a tough and unyielding life, and by chance enters the chaebol world. The how seems pretty crucial if you ask me, since there’s a big difference between, say, getting a job as the help or finding out that you’re an heiress one day. All we know for now is that the drama will be about the changes in her life once she enters the world of the filthy rich.

She played a character who clawed her way up from nothing in her last drama Yawang, though the hunger for power was what drove her there. I’m sure there’s more to the role than an overnight Cinderella story, and if it’s anything like Secret, it’ll be a twisty turny drama filled with romantic turmoil. Now all we need is the perfect leading man to match her.

Mask is scheduled to follow Sensory Couple (which follows Hyde, Jekyll, Me) on Wednesdays and Thursdays in May.

Although I wanted to see her act again, I would be happy if its a romcom genre to be different. But If ever she'll decide to play this role, l'm in :)

I heard she has a bad attitude and despite her acting skills, I'm not surprised she's not really that popular.

Sorry but I still don't get what her diva behavior has to do with UTW.
Is it like, "it's better for him to marry a nice person instead of her" ?

Seriously! The amount of times I have heard that someone not even fit to hold a script in their hands is "bright" and "works hard".......what is the use of it when your work is that poor. Su Ae the talented diva is preferable to this.

Tell me about it. Soo-ae slays the acting and she's getting offers left and right from drama producers and Chungmuro.

Implying that UTW turned down Soo-ae for a ballerina is very degrading to all parties involved. WTH.

yeah I'm another one who has never understood why absolutely godawful actresses keep getting lead role offers for being "nice" and "hard working" (and of course, "pretty"). I'd still rather have diva Su Ae on my screen than the likes of Suzy!

Agree. Diva or not, I still think she's an amazing actress and deserves the accolades she gets.

Excuse me. She's not a diva, she's a psycho.

-When her drama "Thousand Days" did not win a daesang she didn't even attend the awards night.
-During "Yawang", she disrespectfully talked down on Kim Sung-ryung (who's her seonbae; Yunho's elder sister in the drama) & a director friend of hers (the latter was just advising her when she snapped that it's his/her fault the drama's ratings are low)
-During the time of her scandal (I dunno when but this is long ago), K-nets christened her as the Nation's Psycho

Why drag UTW here (and in such a context) when the topic has nothing to do with him in the first place? I agree with "Fab&Healer sittinginatree" it's degrading.
She might have diva behavior and she might not be a person to easily cope with but still implying or saying that she was rejected because of this is mean and unnecessary.

Don't know, she looked weird and jealous when they were talking about his marriage in 1n2d. He said he heard she cried during his wedding (which she didn't attend for schedule conflicts), she didn't deny, and just smiled sadly and changed the topic. She even made a rather dangerous statement that would irk his wife (which he said he didn't remember doing that twice.)

But yeah, I belive he did have a crush on her; talking about how beautiful she was.
But I think they are better off as friends, because their characters just don't match. If they were together, with her rumored psycho/diva behavior, he'd suffer a lot.

hmm this writer doesn't impress me but for Su Ae(!!) I'll give it a shot. Maybe it can be melo and badass? What if she's like an investigator who goes undercover into chaebol world to snuff out some group's evil deeds, but due to FAAAATED entanglements with a...chaebol son's too played...a fixer! (like Ray Donovan?) who of course is the only obstacle between her and THE TRUTH and then angst can ensue. Yup that's my plot, make it happen show. You're welcome.

It's a bit sad that we have to speak of looks ahead of talent in the case of one of (imho) the best actresses of her generation.

And it's not as if her projects are unsuccessful, her last two dramas both clocked ratings in the range of 20% (Yawang was the highest rated drama of 2013 before YFAS). Same with The Flu, it did pretty well. Her lack of a so-called fanbase doesn't stop her from getting people to watch the things she's in.

Despite high ratings in korea, yawang is not a big hit at all. Soo ae can act that's for sure but it's too bad she's not a big star and overall she's not that popular.

@pigsnout

lol, you should stop being rude and steppin on people's comments as if they need your approval. i also seems to me pogo made a big deal and got mad just cuz someone doesn't find the actress appealing to the eye.

Apparently, you don't realize that queen of ambition is not a big hit (internationally).....ratings above 20% in korea does NOT mean it's "one of the most well liked dramas of all time in korea"....queen of ambition got a lot of critcism for the messed up storyline and got accused of plagiarism too.

0

By the way pogo, just calm down, why the heck are you getting pissed off? Beauty is subjective. Just because people say "she's not pretty" does not mean they're putting looks before talent. Yeah, she gets people to watch the things she's in but still, she's not able to gather a "huge audience" like other actors and actresses who are more popular than her.

I generally hate it when people tell others to "calm down".

0

So a drama with 25 percent ratings in Korea is not a big hit in Korea? What kind of logic......

You can stop being rude to @pogo, she seems much calmer than you who wants to have the last word and deny truths that are very easily verified like drama ratings and film admission figures.

I agree with @pogo
Even if Yawang and The Flu got negative responses/criticisms, they both did well financially (and that's probably what matters to the company). And it's not Soo Ae's fault that the story of Yawang went downhill. The blame goes to the writer. Soo Ae did her part well in Yawang. It's the writer who screws up. Don't get why people blame it on Soo Ae's for the plot. She's acting based on the scripts given to her.

I do, however, respect her dedication to her craft and am always blown away by how good she acts.

If she has attitude problems, all I can say is this: Soo Ae, my dear, please, for your own sake, get a grip on yourself. I still love you, though! Just be real nice and kind, ok? Bad attitude won't get you far in your career, no matter how talented you are. Alright, dear? Thank you! I love you!
