News bites: February 7, 2015

  • Kim Jae-wook (Age of Feeling) has been cast as the lead in There’s Another Road. Billed as a movie that will demonstrate that even the briefest of human encounters can provide healing, Kim will play a policeman who is ready to give up on life. He’ll travel to Chuncheon in what he decides will be his final trip, but there he’ll meet Seo Ye-ji (Records of a Night Watchman), whose character is in a similarly precarious situation in life. Kim gave his reasons for choosing the film: “I thought this could be a film that today’s youths, many who face harsh realities without anyone to lean on, could relate to. Just as I was comforted when I read the script, I hope we can release a good project to the world and I will try my best to ensure it.” [My Daily]
  • Lucky Kim So-yeon! She’ll have the men falling for her left and right in the upcoming JTBC drama Falling for Innocence. In addition to the male leads, Jin Gu (The Target) will make a cameo appearance as a senior police detective who is a hopeless romantic and only has eyes for Kim. He’ll be in the first couple of episodes, then will continue to materialize in flashbacks. Falling for Innocence begins on Fridays and Saturdays in April. [Osen]
  • I’ll forevermore do a silent cheer when I hear about a new project that a former One International intern is involved with: Byun Yo-han (Misaeng) is the lead in an indie titled Socialphobia, a film with a view on the current state of social media. When a woman posts a nasty anonymous comment in a public forum, a witchhunt begins, but at the end of the search, she’ll be found dead. Those who searched for her will attempt to uncover the truth behind her suspicious death. Byun’s character is a would-be police officer who gets involved in the online debate that escalates, while Lee Joo-seung (Pinocchio) is a social media junkie who also gets entangled in the case. [TV Report]

  • Byun Yo-han

  • Kang Haneul (Misaeng [Silent hooray!]) will appear in OCN’s latest crime series, Missing Persons Task Force M. About a pair of detectives forced to work together despite radically different styles, each of the ten episodes will show the duo working to solve a different, grisly mystery. Sadly, that means Kang’s cameo will be limited to one episode, but his role will be a central one for the hour, and I’ll take what I can get. Missing Persons Task Force M airs at the end of March. [Joongang]
  • Kim Seung-woo (IRIS 2) has confirmed and Lee Tae-ran (King’s Family) is being courted to lead Twenty for the Second Time. The melodramatic film will be about a man and a woman who were first loves in their twenties and become reunited later in life. It will be filmed in Korea and Italy beginning next month and released in the second half of the year. [TV Report]
  • Innocent Steps, the 2005 film about a girl (Moon Geun-young) who gets mistaken for a professional dancer and who has a mere few months to win a national dancing competition, is being remade in China. While the news is being released on the heels of the success of the Chinese remake of Miss Granny (which was released in China a month ago and has already set revenue records for a Chinese-Korean joint production), pre-production for the remake of Innocent Steps took two years and the first draft of the screenplay is already in place. The updated version will be about a Chinese man and a Korean woman who struggle with cultural differences but eventually fall in love through their dance collaboration. Production is now in search for the leads, and filming will soon begin in both countries, with 40% of the scenes to be shot in Korea and the rest in China. [Munhwa]
  • Funnyman Shim Hyung-tak (Persevere Gu Hae-ra) is a welcome addition to SBS’s upcoming weekend drama Divorce Lawyer in Love, where it seems he’ll play the second lead vying for the attentions of Jo Yeo-jung. Divorce Lawyer in Love will begin in March after the conclusion of The Family is Coming. [Star News]

Kim Jae-Wook as the 2nd lead in Who Are You (2013) was a travesty of justice in kdramaland. It makes me grumble I tell you to this day! You'll never convince me otherwise that KJW shouldn't have been the lead.

Well we can at least move on now that he is the lead. Unless they do a remake with him as lead and call it "who was I?" His recent Kdrama stints have all been truncated in one way or another (dare I mention the kill off in that which cannot be spoken of?)

Until then I'll just keep rewatching him make waffles .

@August: Agreed 100%! That's 16 episodes of my life I'll never get back!

I really do wonder what his criteria for choosing a role is?

@Owl: yep, waffles are the way to go. I would watch his ice bucket challenge, but that's just another role where he doesn't talk!!! Sheesh!

Oh good. I'm not the only one who stalks the One International interns. Socialphobia actually sounds very interesting. I like Korean indie films, particularly ones that critique society. Social media is a big one these days.

There's Another Road is another one I want to see. Thanks for sharing!

Lawyer Kim!! I'd forever remember Shim Hyung Tak as the hopeless romantic lawyer in Let's Eat..
Will he become lawyer too in the new drama?

And happy that Innocent Steps is getting remake. Moonie was so young at that time but she always amazed me with her acting skills.

I think it sounds a lot like the Bollywood movie Anjaana Anjaani, unless that is also a remake of the movie you mentioned. Man, I can't wait to see Kim Jae-wook in a drama or maybe another movie with Joo Ji-hoon, all my Antique Bakery feels!!!

awww good news for so many actors I love, especially our One Inter newbies (Misaeng <33333333333 )

high time for Kim Jae-wook, though, that lead role was long past overdue!

Just the other day I was wondering when Kim Jae Wook would finally get his long overdue leading role and this makes me happy.

And yay for Byun Yo Han, that's a very interesting choice of his. I'm glad he's not jumping on his newly owned stardom and still going for an indie project. It's not necessarily a guarantee for quality but at least an indie film would be more careful about its contents than other commercial aspects (that ruined more than one potentially good movie)

Yes, I think BYH's been in quite a few indie movies before his "small screen breakout role" in Misaeng. I want to look up his indie movies too.

I'm definitely tuning in for Divorce Lawyer in Love. The cast is so great and I'm in love with Shim Hyung-tak lol. He plays second lead perfectly. I've never seen Jo Yeo-jung, but I hope she's great. And now that I know Yeon Woo-jin is great at comedy, there's really no excuse for this not to be hilarious. I hope it lives up to my hype!

I actually wrote about Kim Jae-wook a few weeks ago too! Someone had asked about actors people had been missing and he was one of the ones I wrote about :)

I wish Kang Ha Neul did more high profile things (like ousting Seo Kang Joon from Hwa Jung) but it seems like he's invested in becoming a really good actor rather than fame. Hopefully he'll get his shot at meaty audience-bait roles once the 87/88 crowd heads out.

Why do I get the feeling jin gu is going to die if he's in the first few episodes and then appears in flashbacks and is a police detective (a la lee min ki's extended cameo in flower boy band )

Hope it is as good as it sounds.

Whoaa Kim Jae-wook, it's been so long!! Excited to see him doing new projects again. Also glad to see Kang Haneul up for new project since I thought he would disappear to theater land for a while.

Hmm, correct me if I'm wrong but, I thought Socialphobia had already finished filming. Heard it was due out in March. If that's the case then it won't be long before he picks up another project

Shim Hyung-tak is so hilarious, caught a clip of him on I Live Alone and I'm surprised it's taken so long for him to get popular! Looks like 2015 will be his year.
