News bites: January 17, 2015

  • Moon Chae-won (Good Doctor) and Lee Seung-gi (You’re All Surrounded) were recently on an entertainment program promoting their upcoming movie, Today’s Love. The reporter noted that Moon was quite a natural at swearing in the film, to which she responded candidly, “There aren’t people who don’t curse at all; people just swear to varying extents: often, sometimes and rarely.” When asked if she practiced cussing, Moon admitted, “Practice…? My lips just remembered.” Seung-gi rebutted her first comment, joking, “I’ve never cursed in my life!” [Xports News]
  • Cha Ye-ryun (She’s So Lovable) is working on a pan-Asian career: She’s wrapping up promotional duties for The Tenor Lirico Spinto, a joint Korean-Japanese film that was recently released, and she’s been cast as the lead in a Chinese psychological thriller titled Extra Grace. There’ll be no rest for Cha, as cameras for the movie begin rolling at the end of this month. [MBN Star]
  • Yay for Lee Shi-un (Modern Farmer), who has been cast as the bestie of Choi Woo-shik (Fated To Love You) in tvN’s upcoming Monday-Tuesday drama, Ho-gu’s Love. He’ll play the creator of a hit manhwa, who makes achieving the holy trinity of webtoons (#1 in hits, comments and reviews) look easy, but in reality he works himself to the bone to achieve success and is suffering from his own genius. Like Ho-gu (Choi), he knows nothing about love–and I’m already anticipating their hijinks and bro chemistry. Ho-gu’s Love airs February 9. [My Daily]
  • Kim Woo-bin (Heirs) has kicked off his second series of Asia fan meetings: He hit Shenzhen, China earlier today, and will be moving on to Beijing, Shanghai, and cities in Thailand, Taiwan and Indonesia. He’s on tour to express gratitude to his international fans; he’s said that he’s thankful for their (our) continued love and support, even when he couldn’t meet with them (us) due to his work filming Twenty and Con Artists. The tour’s sold out, but domestic fans will have another opportunity to greet His Long-leggedness–he’s also planning a fan meeting in Seoul upon his return. [My Daily]
  • That movie that cast Kwon Sang-woo (Temptation) as an amateur (but geeeeenius) private investigator is making the news rounds again. You know, this one? And this one? Perhaps the PR team is just playing the game to ensure the movie is fresh in people’s minds, but with an award-winning script and an interesting premise (Kwon partners with a veteran detective, played by Sung Dong-il, to solve a murder mystery) I hadn’t forgotten about it! Private Investigator *should* begin filming in the next couple of months for a release by the end of the year. [Joongang]
  • Jo Yeo-jung (Haeundae Lovers) has confirmed she’ll play the lead in SBS’s new weekend drama, Divorce Lawyer in Love. The screenplay won a contest last September and sounds lighthearted and fizzy: Jo will play a bulldozer of a divorce lawyer who treats her office manager (the job’s been offered to Yeon Woo-jin, but talks are ongoing) poorly; she later gets her license revoked due to misconduct while her former office manager becomes an attorney in his own right. They hate each other with a passion, but as it goes in dramaland, they’ll fall madly in love. [Ten Asia]
  • KBS Drama Specials are coming back with a slightly different format; after previously being canceled at the end of last year due to opposition from KBS’s directors’ association, the station and their PDs appear to have worked out the kinks. While many of the previous specials had been single episodes extending over an hour, the new specials will follow a similar format to KBS show Spy; they won’t air back-to-back like Spy does, but will be kept to shorter, 50-minute episodes and will no longer be confined to a single airing. KBS has 15 drama specials planned to air in 2015, and four of those will air in the first half of the year. Kim Sae-ron (High School: Love On) will appear in the first of these drama specials, which will cover some weighty subject material: comfort women (women who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese army). The two-episoder will air February 28 and March 1 (the latter being the March 1st Movement national holiday). [Star News, Osen]
  • Sad, sad news: Choi Jin-hyuk (Pride and Prejudice) is heading to the army very soon. We’d heard he might enlist early last year, but he seemed determined to make his mark as an actor before beginning military service, filming three dramas (also Emergency Couple and Fated to Love You) in 2014. At a recent pre-finale celebration for Pride and Prejudice, Choi joked, “Everyone from the staff to the sunbaes to the young hoobaes on this show kept telling me, ‘Enlist already.'” He confirmed his intent to fulfill his military obligation immediately after the show’s conclusion and he expressed his gratitude to the crew and cast, telling them, “Because of you I’ll have warm thoughts to help me weather the cold winters.” (Awww!) On the plus side, since so many will be leaving in the next year or two, it'll be nice to have him back in time to replace some of the upcoming enlistments.

Silver lining. Doesn't it feel like Song Joong-ki's been gone forever?

Yessssssssss! But he still as a few months left, right? And I'm going to be so frustrated if he picks a movie as his first comeback project. I mean they're honestly a better choice but I'm an incredibly selfish viewer.

Ya! Yeon Woo-jin! You better confirm for this comedy you hear or I won't stay still!

Darn I liked the format of the drama specials. Short and to the point is where it's at. Requires tighter writing which longer dramas could learn. Not making enough money huh?

He's really lucky, though - he turned a two-episode cameo into the foundation for a whole new lease of life as an actor, and to be able to do pull that kind of turnaround within less than two years is really impressive.

Going from nobody to established Big 3 leading man status within that short time is an amazing feat, and I'm glad he didn't leave until he cemented his popularity. He has that status to tide him over two years in the military.

(now I wonder if Yoon Kyun-sang will be able to do the same....)

Gonna have to concur on that one. It's incredible (but given how long he toiled in the industry before he found any measure of success - I'm glad he made it work) and hopefully when he comes back he'll be able to bank on that success he quickly established in the past year and a half.

Forever will heart him as Wol Ryung.

I've missed His Long-Leggedness in dramas this year but he does seem to have made a fairly successful career in movies (both the movies he's been in have clocked over 2.5 million admissions, not bad at all for a new star) so his career is in good shape <33

I look forward to seeing Jo Yeo-jung in the divorce lawyer drama. Hope it's not another Emergency Couple-style infuriation....

I've been following Choi Jin Hyuk's career since I first watched him in It's Okay Daddy's Girl, it is so good to see his career finally take off in 2013.

But that sound you hear is me weeping because it's finally official that he's going to enlist soon. All the other times were news outlets and the media jumping the gun and speculating because of his age (though he's only 28 - just looks more mature than his real age), but now he's officially confirmed it. WEEPS.

I'm glad he managed to squeeze in Pride and Prejudice right before his enlistment. He's going off on a high note, so hopefully when he comes back he'll have an easier time finding roles. His role in P&P as Dong Chi was tailor made for him. MBC must be super happy to have him as one of their golden boys. He had all sorts of the right combo: moral conviction, smexy, kickass, charismatic, and most importantly snarky with his intelligence and narcissism. He surprised me with how he held his own against Choi Min Soo (who was FANTASTIC in P&P as Chief Moon).

2014 was a good year for him. I liked Emergency Couple (Baby Gook FTW) and really enjoyed P&P. Even though he played a villainous lackey in The Divine Move, it was awesome to see him get his inner villain on (will not lie, he was hot as eff across Jung Woo Sung and held his own too) and I really liked seeing him fight choreo (another reason why P&P rocked for letting him use his choreo training from TDM). Hated Fated to Love You for him though, despite me loving his character, he's waaaay beyond 2nd lead status. I only want to see him play leads from now on, and the next time he plays 2nd lead, it better be an awesome villainous role (kinda like Dark Wol Ryung).

Ever since he played Gumihot Daddy in Gu Family Book, it's been awesome to see his career take off the way it has, especially considering how long he toiled in the industry before landing that breakout role. I watched him in soooo many below mediocre dramas (Hello to I Need Romance, Panda and Hedgehog, It's Okay Daddy's Girl), and while GFB wasn't the greatest drama or anything, Wol Ryung was the best thing about that drama. Same goes for Heirs. I liked him and his character a lot in Heirs, but he was criminally underused as was like 90% of that cast and their first world problems.

Thankfully he has time to hold a couple fanmeets to say goodbye and he still has one more project in the works. It'll be the only thing tiding us over before he returns from his enlistment. I think he'll have a new Japanese vampire movie that will be released in April. Yes, VAMPIRE. UNF. After seeing him play Dark Wol Ryung, he's definitely going to rock being a vampire. Or at least, I hope so.

I will miss his chocolate abs.

Aw, yisssssssss. This will be the Asian Year of the Vampire, won't it? ::rubs hands together:: Excellent.

Now if we can just get one really really scary vampire show, I'll be happy as a pig in mud. :)

moon chaewon *___* also i feel like one of the few who don't ship chaewon and seunggi, but they're actually so comfortable with each other they feel like bros instead of a sparkly chemistry otp. i'm sure i'll still love them in the movie though.

boo about changing the drama specials. the last one i saw was the one with kim seulgi and it was a delight; it was about terminal illness but it was so fucking funny.

Aww.... Right when I'm starting to love CJH - finally! - he's leaving! I went through all the bore called Pride and Prejudice for him. But it's definitely time for him to leave. At the very least he'll be back before all the 87ers since no one's even planning to leave yet. I'll miss him!

I'm so insanely excited for Twenty, it has all my favourite actors Kim Woo-bin, Jung So-min and Kang Ha-neul. I'm even more excited for the Woo-bin/So-min pairing cause I feel like they'll have a great chemistry. I can't wait for stills and teasers to start coming out.
Aww, Kim Won is off to the army, I kinda hope he and Wang Ji-won will get to do a drama together that explores the amazing chemistry they have. I really wished they got together in Fated to love you instead of being siblings.

Yep!!! There are some 86ers who are still here, but I'm expecting Lee Seung Gi to go by the end of this year, the others Lee Min Ho, Jang Geun Suk, Joo Won, Jung Il Woo, I think they'll spend another year in drama/movie land.

Most of the 86ers haven't left yet, like Jaejoong, Siwon, etc, but they'll have to go sometime this year. But yeah, there'll be a drought soon enough once the 87ers start leaving, too. Some of the 87ers will probably go this year, too, if they'd rather go earlier than pushing the deadline next year.

The drama special format change is interesting. Pretty much all the KBS drama specials of all sorts have always been an hour or so, single episode, almost made-for-TV movie sorts of affairs, right? Except for when they veer off into "drama special series" for a while every now and then.

This change sounds like it was influenced by the directors. One of the express functions of drama specials is as sort of a training ground for directors, isn't it? Maybe they feel like it would be better training to have drama special episodes be more like drama episodes, and drama specials to be more like dramas. It makes sense. So now we get mini-mini-series, or something like that.

I'll definitely check out the Kim Sae-ron eps. Sounds interesting both for the subject matter and for the new format. I liked the old format, and I hope that there are still some single episode specials, but I think it's a good idea to give writers and directors a little more flexibility too.
