Maids plans its comeback, sets broadcast date

It’s been six weeks since Maids abruptly left the air, but the historical drama is finally ready to start making a comeback, according to the latest statement given by a rep for cable station JTBC on the 7th.

The drama put out only one episode before its set burned down and a staffer died in the accident. All of the production’s energies had been spent dealing with the aftermath, so for weeks the producers were candid about not knowing exactly how they would resume production. Returning was always the intention, but there were a number of logistical concerns to contend with, such as having no indoor stages left on which to shoot.

JTBC will start over with the first episode, to air on January 23—and to commemorate the spirit of a fresh start, the episode will be re-edited with the intent of heightening its quality. As the first episode already displayed remarkable production quality (it was pretty cinematic, with a clear directorial flair), that almost doesn’t seem necessary, but I see how it may feel better to do something differently. Shake off the bad juju and all that.

The timeline still seems ambitious to me, because while they have secured a new set location, they’re still in the process of construction. They’ll commence reshoots on January 12, beginning with outdoor scenes only and adding indoor ones as the new sets become available.

A refresher on the plot: Jung Yumi stars as a prickly noblewoman’s daughter who falls from grace when her father is implicated in a plot. Turned into a slave, she struggles with her new status, and heightening the tension is her conflict-ridden interplay with Oh Ji-ho. Quiet and dignified despite being a lowly slave, he saved her when she was a haughty lady, and is the one to deliver her to her new fate. The show promises to explore the upstairs-downstairs dichotomy of Joseon households, and the relationships and clashes that occur when the two sides meet.

Episodes 1 and 2 will kick off on January 23 and 24, after which the drama will proceed in its originally planned schedule as a Friday-Saturday drama with 20 total episodes.

Huh I guess I held off on watching the pilot needlessly then. That's okay though, I'm wishing this fresh start well and for the safety of all involved.

I hope there will be no more accidents too. On the other way, I also hope the PD, the actors and specially the writers have used this time to polish the drama.

I really like the spirit in which the production is moving forward..

I like that they were honest and upfront about not knowing exactly when or how they were coming back on the air, if at all. And I like how they're starting over on a fresh slate for everyone, with a re-edited first episode. It's clearly devastating for everyone, and a lot of hard work & determination is needed to move forward; I admire them for gathering themselves together to do what's necessary, and with a spirit of excellence, to boot.

I find the show's premise interesting and would've checked it out anyway, but now I feel like I want to watch this to support the crew.

I was so devastated with the tragic loss, but can't deny the fact that I am very excited for this.

It's the Korean Downton Abbey, but a lot better, in my opinion. While I was watching Episode 1, I was thinking, "How could the BIG 3 not think of this? In the whole history of drama sculpting and plot deviating? A sageuk like this is a fun road to go to!"

It's really a fresh drama for me, and I am excited for more! Way to go, MAIDS!

And this has prompted me to rewatch Episode 1. I take back what I said... It is NOT the korean Downton Abbey... Because MAIDS a whole lot better, in my opinion!!! (Hahaha! This is just Episode 1, but we'll see)

Yay! I was so scared it would be cancelled to give the first episode a try, what a relief! The show will keep on going, and seems to be within good hands.

I really respect how the production team has been dealing both with the tragic incident and its aftermath, so I have high hopes that their good management will produce a well-rounded drama!

I watched Episode 1 and loved it as a different approach to a K-Drama. Then I learned of the horrific loss of life from the burning sets... Honestly didn't think it would be able to return, even wrote some messages to find out if anyone knew anything. So glad to learn, that in the midst of tragedy, there will be new life for "Maids"... Can't wait until it starts again. Best wishes to all who have a part in this drama ;)
