Cha Seung-won courted to join Lee Yeon-hee in MBC sageuk
by javabeans
Thank goodness for title changes. The drama formerly operating under the name Splendid Politics has switched to the more straightforward Princess Jeongmyeong, and is courting Cha Seung-won (You’re All Surrounded) to join the production. Lee Yeon-hee (Miss Korea), who was reported to be in the mix earlier this month, is still favorably considering.
The MBC historical drama is set during King Seonjo’s reign, which is also the time period depicted in the currently airing fusion sageuk King’s Face, although this drama will take a different narrative approach to the royals. Gwanghae has often been depicted in a favorable light in modern films and dramas, and remembered as a good king. This drama will make him the villain, however, as the prince born of a concubine who usurped the throne from his half-siblings in Seonjo’s direct line of succession.
Jeongmyeong is one of those siblings, being the only princess born of the direct line, who suffers at the hands of her ambitious half-brother. After her young brother, Grand Prince Yeongchang, is killed “at the hands of Gwanghae,” she is stripped of her status and cast into the lowest class along with her mother, Queen Inmok. We’re not told much other than that the drama will follow Jeongmyeong’s life and hardships, which makes it too early to tell what kind of drama we’re looking at. On a hunch Imma guess it’s sad rather than happy, but hey, you never know.
Cha Seung-won’s character description, meanwhile, goes like this: “It has not been precisely announced what role he would play, but it appears he will return to television showing the appearance of a king.” Um, okay. I’ll go ahead and assume it’s Gwanghae since I can’t imagine Seonjo having much screentime, but way to be weirdly vague-and-specific at the same time.
The always-wonderful Lee Sung-min (Misaeng) is already confirmed to play the politician Lee Deok-hyung, who eventually became prime minister. He was noted for his exceptional intelligence and was once reported to have memorized the entirety of a confidential document during the Japanese invasion of Korea (in 1592) after one look, which he then reported to King Seonjo.
The show has some strong credits, with writer Kim Yi-young having scripted Dong Yi, Yi San, and Horse Healer (before sageuks, she had a couple of cute rom-coms, Marrying a Millionaire and My Love Patzzi). PD Kim Sang-ho previously directed Arang and the Magistrate and Can You Hear My Heart.
Princess Jeongmyeong will be a Monday-Tuesday drama on MBC to premiere in April; it’ll follow Shine or Go Crazy, which follows Pride and Prejudice.

Wow, just how many dramas and films can Lee Sung-Min handle in a year? I swear he appears in everything these days. I concede that he is a great actor, but with him grabbing all these roles for his age range, is it because other actors are turning them down or are they just not sought after?

I want him to be the lead in a romantic comedy again! I am never getting over how much I loved him in Best Love.
To think when I started watching that drama, I thought he was totally miscast. Now I just want to watch endless dramas just like that with him. :-)

This could be interesting. The writer... I have mixed feelings. I loved her work for Yi San and Dong Yi(though to a lesser extent than YS, but still), but Horse Doctor was a bit... meh. She's kind of a slow writer. Hope this will be good, though. Sageuks are my favorites.

Omg yes! I've was hoping CSW picks a sageuk next after unprecedented was unceremoniously shelved. I'm surprised he's returning to MBC but I won't complain since they have the best sageuks from the three networks.
Still not feeling Lee Yeon-hee so I hope she passes on. The role she's courted for sounds challenging so I want someone more talented and experienced. She may have been good in MK - I haven't seen it - but I didn't feel a thing for her GFB stint which was apparently amazing. Fingers crossed she's decline but I doubt it.

Lee Yeon Hee in a Sageuk drama?! Quick where's Choi Jin Hyuk? I need a GFB Gumihot Daddy and Gumiho Mommy reunion STAT. Preferably one where she doesn't break his heart again, but I need a CJH and LYH reunion.
My heart still aches for Wolryung xD

from Go Ara's mentor to Lee Yeon Hee's lover, it s really a huge gap.
anyway, i always like LYH, although her acting was suck before MK, so it s good to see her work with experience actors and learn from them

CSW is by far my fav korean actor and i hope he doesnt play the villain. I would like to see a hero in saeguk before he plays a villain role. Thats the reason i havent seen Athena Goddess of War yet.
If he has romance with LYH, good for her he is one cool, sexy looking dad. One of few men i can say as another straight man that he is just too handsome ;)

Shucks! I love this pairing! Lee Yeon-hee with Cha Seung-won! Shucks. (I kinda didn't like Cha Seung-won with Gong Hyo-jin, but LOVED him with Kim Suna, but Cha Seung-won with Lee Yeon-hee looks REAL PERFECT) Please accept this, both of you! So that good news will favor us, jigum tanjang!

After So Ji-sub, Lee Seon-kyun, Cha Seung-won, I guess Lee Yeon-hee's next leading man has to be Jo In-sung.
