Kim Hee-ae to reunite with Secret Love Affair team for new SBS drama
by girlfriday
It’s not set in stone since this drama isn’t due out until next year, but Kim Hee-ae (Secret Love Affair, Noonas Over Flowers) is in talks to re-team with director Ahn Pan-seok and writer Jung Sung-joo of her last two dramas for cable network JTBC, Secret Love Affair and A Wife’s Credentials. Though she’s technically in the “considering” stage, it’s pretty much expected that she’ll sign on, and after keeping her in the headlines all year long with the critically lauded and endlessly parodied Secret Love Affair (perhaps they have Gag Concert to also thank for that), she isn’t likely to turn them down.
Kim Hee-ae’s reps said, “PD Ahn Pan-seok said as their last drama was ending, ‘Let’s do the next project together,’ and they made the promise to do so. Because Kim Hee-ae’s trust in PD Ahn Pan-seok and writer Jung Sung-joo is strong, she’s favorably considering the drama.”
The team will be leaving JTBC for SBS this coming spring, and for now the drama is called War of Brilliant Minds. There’s not a whole lot of information about the subject matter, and some rumors say that there was talk of it being a Kim Hee-ae life story. Her reps have denied that, and said that there isn’t even a script yet — she’s literally going on faith in the producers alone.
It’s described as the life story of a woman who has been called a genius (or more broadly, a brilliant talent) since her childhood. She only looked ahead and raced towards success, but at an important juncture in her life, she meets a crisis. That’s really all we’re told, other than the fact that the drama intends to poke at societal norms like the producers’ previous works do. I’m going to venture a guess that her crisis is an extramarital affair, just because that’s the pattern with this trio. It’s entirely possible they’ll try something new, though I honestly doubt it, since that’s their niche — contemplative character-centered dramas about women trapped in loveless marriages who discover love outside their tiny social bubbles.
The show is currently planning for the Monday-Tuesday slot following Punch, which is tentatively scheduled to follow Secret Door. (Punch is the third outing from the writer of The Chaser and Empire of Gold, which I’m really looking forward to; it hasn’t started casting yet.) That puts War of Brilliant Minds sometime in March.

Gag Concert parody is hilarious and they always emphasize on 21 year old Yoo Ah In. LOL
Kim Hee Ae always looks elegant onscreen and offscreen btw.

I love Gag Concert, especially when they parody dramas. I miss King of Ratings, but their SLA parody has been pretty great at times. :)

It doesn't sound groundbreaking in any sense but I'll watch anything with Goddess Kim Hee-ae in it, honestly.
I'm a little surprised PD Ahn Pan-seok and co. are headed over to SBS this time around considering both Secret Love Affair and A Wife’s Credentials did pretty well at JTBC.
WHOA, why haven't I heard anything about this Punch?? I really liked Empire of Gold (idk what it was, I was just addicted/) so I'm really looking forward to their next project. Can't wait to see who they cast!

I'm surprised too. From what I gather, jTBC pretty much has a hands-off policy with Ahn's dramas, which is hardly the case with the ratings-driven big 3.
Maybe SBS is trying to revive their "premium drama" brand (Alone in Love, My Sweet Seoul) by luring back the critically acclaimed PDs/writers from cable.

I'm really looking forward to this since I love Kim Hee Ae and PD Ahn but I feel a bit uneasy about it being on SBS and not JTBC...

I actually loved Empire of Gold, I did a lot of snooping in soompi for that drama (which I usually never do). The writing was top notch and Go Soo was fantastic. So I'm looking forward to who they'll cast for Punch.
As for this one, I'm really not a fan of extra-marital affairs because I always see divorce as the best alternative. But I know this production aces in their thing, so I'm expecting this to be a critically acclaimed, mid-ratings success. I'll skip though, unless they pick an awesome male lead.

I loved Empire of Gold as well. The writing especially was intriguing.
I am crossing my fingers they'll not add any love story with or without adultery in the main plot. Finally a show about a brilliant/genius WOMAN, make it work show.

Just wondering...are there any posts by girlfriday or javabeans about Secret Love Affair that I may have missed? From reading this post, sounds as if girlfriday may have watched at least some of SLA and I would really love to read her thoughts of the drama.

From memory, both DB and GF never wrote any "reviews" on SLA, although before its airing they did post some basic background information what poster release and what not. It's such a shame I know! I am a huge fan of SLA and waited for their opinions on it, even if it's like the usual overall general review kind of thing but never got anything. Nevertheless, judging by the tone in the posts which they have mentioned SLA, such as Witch's Romance, it sounds like they agree with the public acclaim for this body of work.

SBS managed to catch Noh Hee Kyung & her team, they are doing the same with this writer. Writers are the most important thing in a drama (see the Rain's drama airing now which is bland & boring). If you can have a top actress in your bundle, then it's good for us viewers. Will wait impatiently for this.

Does 2 dramas really count as a niche? After all, Ahn Pan-seok directed White Tower and The End of the World.

This trio (and Yoo Ah In!) have done a marvelous job named Secret Love Affair. I only watched A Wife's Credential and Secret Love Affair. And I must say SLA has raised my bar in watching K0rean dramas. So looking forward to their new project!

I'm looking forward to this and Punch!! Wish there would be more news re Punch though...The major plot is enough to draw me in - finger-crossed that they'll be able to cast an actor that's really, really good...

I'm returning to this news just because I'm still anticipating this drama a year later. Is it still in progress? Wonder how long we ll get to see it... I'm watching Mrs. Cop now and Kim Hee Ae is the only reason for it, but I really love it when she plays such characters as Oh Hye Won...
