Slow Video’s trailer attracts rapid attention

We may not have known anything about the plot when we first heard about Slow Video, but I’m happy to report that the movie seems to deliver on its promise of a heartwarming comedy — it looks reeeally stinking cute. In it, Cha Tae-hyun plays Yeo Jang-bu, a man with a unique ability to see everything in slow motion. The skill suddenly manifests itself one day in 5th grade, and upon a doctor’s confirmation of the young boy’s visual acuity, his life changes. Friends and classmates nickname him “Monster Eyes,” and as a result, he spends the rest of his youth cooped up at home, only leaving the house on rare occasions to visit the optometrist.

Now an adult, Jang-bu gets a job and becomes the ace employee at the national CCTV control center (seriously, way to make use of your talent). Years of isolation have left their mark, as his colleagues whisper about how peculiar he is, how he doesn’t seem to have any friends, and how he’s a man of very few words. He’s a sweet, adorkable guy who’s misunderstood; LOL, he gets labeled a “pervert” twice in the trailer alone.

On the job, Jang-bu begins to pay particular notice to a few recurring players on screen, and he muses that the exercise is like watching characters in a drama. He becomes fascinated with these individuals out there in the real world, and decides it is time for him to experience real life for himself. He embarks on peculiar missions to help out the people he’s grown to care for, but it’s comical when Jang-bu suddenly appears in front of his new “friends” — and they have no clue who he is.

In the trailer, Jang-bu says, “Everyone in life hurries about. Sometimes I wish people would slow down and see things the way I see them.” The movie will revolve around his well-meaning but awkward efforts to effect change in others’ lives, and despite his stunted social skills, you can see that our central character is charming and pretty darn irresistible.

Nam Sang-mi (Joseon Gunman) plays Jang-bu’s love interest in the film, and although he has her fleeing from him at the end of the clip, I’d bet good money he’s able to work his way into her heart by the end. Something tells me he’ll also forge strong friendships with his CCTV center colleagues, Oh Dal-soo (Pirates) and Jin Kyung (It’s Okay, It’s Love), and, oh, just about everyone else in the film. Cha Tae-hyun’s in his element, and he’s got me totally enamored with Jang-bu already.

Slow Video reunites Cha Tae-hyun with his Hello Ghost writer-director, Kim Young-tak, and hits theaters October 2.
