PD Lee Yoon-jung returns with romantic comedy for tvN
by girlfriday
There’s been a mass exodus of drama talent to cable networks in the last few years and especially in the last few months, and among those who made the big headlines was PD Lee Yoon-jung, of Coffee Prince, Triple, and Taereung National Village. She ended her contract with MBC in May and made the move over to tvN, where she’s returning with a new drama this winter. The project, called Heart to Heart, will be a romantic comedy with her signature sensitive, breezy style.
The drama will air sometime in January, following either Valid Love (the Monday-Tuesday drama potentially starring Uhm Tae-woong that comes after My Secret Hotel), or Misaeng (the Friday-Saturday drama starring Im Shi-wan that follows Plus Nine Boys).
Not much else is known about the project that’s just now getting off the ground, but I’m always happy about more rom-coms. And PD Lee’s sensibility is right up tvN’s alley, so there seems to be a lot of anticipation about her first drama at the new network. Coffee Prince is of course considered a dramaland classic and a true gem; I didn’t love Triple because the story went absolutely nowhere, but it did have some lovely character beats and a similar overall vibe that I’d call contemplative but upbeat.
Heart to Heart won’t be on the air until January, but I hope it starts casting soon!

Hahaha I saw the Coffee prince pic and automatically assumed that GY is coming back to dramas....OTL that's not the case.
I absolutely loved Coffee prince, and it is indeed a kdrama world gem.As for Triple, it was a pleasant watch...you just had to ignore bits and parts of it..plus I am glad I was introduced to the adorable Song Joong Ki through it...ooooh how much I shipped him with the girl ♡ so so cute! Specially the part where he picks her up and starts kissing her all over her face *squeaaaaal*....okay back to the real world now lol

I could never finish coffee prince. Mostly because of its cast.
Will still check this one out, hope it's good.

That's a rare complaint.
The cast was very good (aside from the early jitters, YEH's acting improved over the course of the run and has been her best work to date).

I stopped watching it after they got together - my interest level just evaporated - and have never been able to finish it. I thought Gong Yoo was very good, though, and Yoon Eun-hye the best she's ever been (even though her character could have been written better).

Witnessing the cable's growing influence over Korean media, especially "against" the KBS/MBC/SBS, should we wait expectantly for new variety shows that would "allow" the JYJ boys to participate, before/after their enlistment?

Cable variety shows have been really big lately, I hope that trend continues.
I remember when JYJ had a deal to show their documentary on a cable channel, but it didn't work out in the end. It may be different this time (2/3 years later), but I don't think a show is high in JYJ's prioities, sadly....they are too much in demand as solo performers.
So maybe after their military service :D !

By variety shows, I was mostly thinking of a one-time appearance [such as in Running Man not in longer shows such as WGM/1N2D], which could easily be renewed, to promote their solo/group career, as actors and singers. Or music shows. Anything a creative and powerful team of PD/writer/producer can come up with in order to see them "free". Wonder what Anthony Kim would suggest. :D

Oh this sounds good
Speaking of the other shows, I look forward to Misaeng. Im Siwan's first leading role, he is a good actor.

CP is one of my absolute favourites in the korean drama landscape, so this project will be something I'll keep my eye on. Judging fro her past works, I think tvN and Lee Yoon Jung will be a good fit.

Over the last few years during my very random cofffe Prince rewatch marathons, I've been wondering where she was and when we'll ever get anoher drama like the Ciffee Prince again...less melodrama and tropes and realistic portrayal of emotions ...I've missed this PD and her style and the music in her dramas..Even though Triple had a plot that meandered to nowhere I loved the characters and their everyday interactions a lot..It introduced Song Joong Ki to me...I really wish they could bring BIM aboard for this but I think k he won't be out by then

TvN is consistently making watchable dramas. There is always at least one drama airing on TvN that I find worth watching.
I adored Marriage Not Dating.
Now it is My Secret Hotel .
Is TvN available, via cable or satellite, in America?

I never thought I would be fan of tv channel but now I am fan of tvn drama.
Since Queen In Hyun, vampire persecutor, all of those 'over flower' shows and now My Secret Hotel, which I totally addicted, I think this channel give such quirky, fresh and especially quality shows to audience.
I have a good hope for this channel an I hope everyone would notice it more! Lol.
Fan!

I absolutely LOVE Coffee Prince. Is it possible to get YEH to star in this? Will she want to do cable? I'm loving TvN these days. I cannot wait to know what the story is about and who they're going to cast. So excited.

You know as much as I love Coffee Prince, it was one of the dramas that hooked me on K-dramas, I liked Taerung National Village better.
Of the five dramas listed on dramawiki that she worked on four of them have someone in common, Lee Sun-kyun. Maybe she can get him to come to cable.

Yes, other than Coffee Prince they worked together in Triple, Taerung National Village and Golden Time. I would love to see Lee Sun-kyun on cable, too, but have many actors leading network shows gone "down" to cable?

Nowadays, it seems like cable brings fame to actors/actresses and then the big 3 mishandles them by giving them bad writers or relegating them to second lead roles.

indeed tvN has very good people behind the desk that chooses good scripts so no wonder good actors will accept, hope know actors will come to tvN on future project, better quality and even the way teh handle their filming, all in all better than what the 3 do at the moment...
i would really like to see Goo Yoo as well in a tvN project and Lee Sun Kyun and Jung Kyung Ho

oh my my..pleasee Lee Sun kyun..come to cable, pleaseee! xD
yes, love Taereung, one of the gems! that drama introduced me to LSK, and made me, strangely, root for him than Lee Min Ki, eventhough i like LMK's character in there too..
anticipating a good drama for this one, for sure, if the team could bring that wonderful Taereung National Village, then my expectation is quite high for this one. Here for a good drama! plus, LSK! <3

Coffee Prince is one of earliest dramas too, and will always have a special place in my heart. Taereung National Village is so lovely, such an underrated gem. Basically, I think I love PD Lee, particularly her music choices.
I would love LSK to do this, he obviously loves working with her. Pretty please?

I never get Coffee Prince hype.
I have watched it dozen times because local TV stations here airing and re-airing the drama. Few months ago, they re-aired CP again. While I like the story and the dynamics between the leads and the supporting casts, it never be one of my favorites.
It's cute, fun to watch and GY and YEH has great chemistry but I never warmed up to the drama. Weird.
On the other hand, at this rate TvN will be the king of romcoms.

I mostly watch romcoms (w/ some sageuks - the good ones) and what makes romcoms good is witty, fun dialogue (w/ good acting) and CP has a lot of it (not to mention real, heartfelt moments).
Not many other K-rom-oms can match CP in that regard.

Also, CP, unlike most K-romcoms, much less K-dramas, didn't have the overly stereotypical, one-note characters or cliche filled scenarios.
In fact, CP is one of the few K-romcoms that had a supporting cast that was fleshed out.

With TvN's arsenal of great rom-com writers, I am sure her next drama will be awesome.
If anyone can convince YEH to go cable then it would be her and I think YEH needs a nice TvN rom-com to bounce back from that dreaded Mirae's Choice.

Oh thank God...YEH + OMS= YES PLS!!
Weird but I never got to finish watching Coffee Prince and while GY acted well in CP, I never was really onboard the pairing between GY and YEH. But 'The Vineyard Man' was different, I still watched this drama from time to time and there was just something sweet between them. You could see that YEH put her all in that drama, her skin progressively tanned in each episodes. I always thought it was adorable at the bts where YEH was crying as she hugged OMS when it was their last shooting at the farmhouse.

There's only 1 PD who can convince Yoon Eun Hye of doing a cable drama, or do something she wouldn't normally do and that's non other than PD Lee Yoon-jung. YEH loves her so and they are still close even up to this day.
