High School King of Savvy in talks for 2-episode extension

There’s another possible extension in the works for a Monday-Tuesday show, on the heels of Triangle’s extension over at MBC. Cable network tvN is reportedly negotiating for two more episodes of its secret identity workplace comedy High School King of Savvy, and the production is considering the extension and working out scheduling details with its cast. This extension actually makes more sense, since the show is really popular (It’s bringing in good numbers for tvN, with last Tuesday’s episode coming in at 1.8%.) and the network obviously wants to capitalize on a good thing.

The workplace rom-com is the quirkiest little show to come around in a while, and leads Seo In-gook and Lee Hana are pitch-perfect as two totally mismatched weirdos who happen to be adorable together. It sounds crazy — he’s eighteen and pretending to be his hyung at the office, and she’s this odd little bird who ends up being his secretary, and the episodes are filled with mundane office work that’s made tense by the fact that it’s a high-schooler trying not to be caught in his con. What it comes down to is Seo In-gook, who is abso-freaking fantastic as this character.

Of course I always cringe at extensions because I don’t want the story to drag, and it would be a shame to lose any momentum in such a fun zippy show. I can see them finding a way to extend the office hijinks, in that most general plot elements in the day-to-day are interchangeable (sometimes this show only serves to remind me how little work actually gets done in corporate offices). But if the overall story suffers, I’ll be cranky. Maybe we could use the extra episodes to jump forward in time, make the hero an adult, and feel less squicky about his swoony romantic advances?

High School King of Savvy airs Mondays and Tuesdays, and is originally slated for 16 episodes.

Seo In-gook is so very charming in this drama and the OTP is cute as hell.

I hope the proposed extension does not ruin the story but then again more of Seo In-gook doing ANYTHING on screen is entertaining.

I vote for more. :)

I am very much in favor of this.

I usually don't care for extension since it just rehashed some plotlines. I, though, wouldn't mind the " time leap" since I'm in a quadmire that I want the OTP to be together but had to remind myself he's still a kid!!!
PD nim, Please don't ruin a truly sweet drama >.<

I'd rather they didn't do the time skip shenaningans, it always feels like a cop out.

Besides I never get everybody calling 18, 19 years old guys kids. In what country these guys are still kids? Really don't get any squeaky factor when they are paired with a 25 year old. If we talk about sex in real life a popular guy like him would have waaaaay more experience than a almost nut job like her. If we just talk about maturity, yeah, she is a bit farther down the road but not by much, not by my count at least. The way she developed and handled her crush on the director was just the same as any 14 year old and the way she is protective about people is mirrored on his actions too.

Where is the big difference on them. I found the age gap problem in IHYV realistic, but here, not so much.

I'm usually not a fan of the time skip either, but in this case and IHYV...

If any of my friends who are around 25 told me "I'm dating this wonderful high school kid - oh, don't worry, he's 18!", I can't say my reaction would be thrilled. It may not be illegal, but it certainly squicks me out; it has nothing to do with the amount of sex either of them may have had before. It has to do with a fully grown adult being paired up with someone who isn't even out of high school yet.

Thankfully, in this case it's all fictional anyways so your mileage may vary :)

@dahllia I get what you said and I'd feel the same IF that was the situation but I think the example doesn't really match the drama story. I am judging the OTP only, in this story, for me, he is not an average, 18 year old guy, he is quite mature for his age and on the other hand she is immature for her age so they balance each other. That's why I don't understand the squakyness level here same as I didn't get it on FBRS or Big.

But the repetition of these themes in entertainment is exactly how a society gets desensitized to adults that are attracted to high schoolers.

The formula for squicky Noona romances is always the same: Make it appear that the older person is really less mature and/or competent than the younger person, so the age difference doesn't seem to matter as much. Also make the older person a woman and the younger person a man.

To put this into perspective, imagine the reverse.

Entertainment always skews it's stories to make the audience sympathetic to the portrayal. If they push long enough on societal standards, eventually societal standards relax. I don't think the abhorrence of adults and youth in sexual relationships is a standard that a civil society should EVER relax. It's best to shut this theme down and shut it down hard.

Because he's 18 Korean age, that means he's 17 American age, and a high school junior. Even in the U.S. that will get a person thrown in the clinker.

Actually, if he's 18 in Korean age, depending on when his birthday is, he could be either 16 or 17 years old. That is young. He is a kid.

Yes, I would like to see this show being extend. I hope it won't ruin the story though, but because I love Seo In Guk too much, that means I can see him on my screen longer and oh boy, I'm soooo proud of him! I also read that the extension will only happen if its meet the cast's schedule. Now, with this news, I hope the ratings will get higher and higher, to reach, at least, 3%. I want the duet between Seo In Guk and Lee Hana!

Nevermind, I manage to see it w/out having to login to FB: https://ko-kr.facebook.com/CJnDrama

It's "Lucky" by Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat, right? Looks like SIG is a Jason Mraz fan huh... saw him singing I'm Yours a few times before.

What's the song that Lee Hana was playing and singing on her own (around 1:00 minute), anyone knows? Sounds like "Knocking on Heaven's Door" to me...

0

Yes, I have seen it. That's why the duet needs to happen! Both of them have beautiful singing voice. It would be a waste if they don't make the two leads who can sing really well to do a duet or two :D

At least they are looking into it early on. It seems the shows that suffer from the 'extension drag' are ones that announce it late in the series and they have a hard time coming up with plot devices for the extension.

I don't care how many extensions they add. They can film a whole hockey game with Seo In Guk and I'd watch it. It's not just him, though. The director is really really good at engaging the viewer and this quirky show is really fun and heart tugging at the same time.

1.8% means the show is really popular? I thought anything around that number is considered mediocre ratings. To be considered a hit don't the cable ratings need to be 3% and up.

Sadly, ratings levels are down for everyone: SBS used to score 20- 25% for successful weekdays dramas and these days they score 11%~ for both YAAS & DoctorStranger.

I am optimistic about the extension because it's still early in the game, barely half of the drama is aired yet. So I think the writers have enough time to think about a good way to lengthen the plot ^^

I am hoping this is the case, as opposed to those cases where they've already filmed 14 out of the 16 episodes. Nothing like it's a little easier to stretch 8 episodes to 10, rather than to make 4 episodes out of 2 episodes worth of material.

I find myself LOL'ing in every episode. I hope the romance remains tamed. And that it skews the way my brain is wanting it to go. And no, it is not the direction the show is headed in now. Ha.

Whatever. I just love Seo In-gook.

I love this show! It is such a wonderful change from all the serious ones that I've been seeing lately. I saw Seo In Gook in Masters Son, and he was so intriguing that I was very happy to see that he was starring in his own drama. Making the show longer would be fun, and I agree that an extension has to come early or it is just a drag on the plot.

Have you seen Answer Me 1997? It was actually Seo In Guk's first starring drama (and his breakout role), long before he pushed to being a second lead in Master Sun :D And now he's back to the main lead territory again, which is great because he is a male lead material, in my opinion.

This is the most I have approved of a possible extension. It's happening early enough, and this show is work based enough that I could see adding more random team activities, and perhaps fleshing out the high school side of things. This far the show can do no wrong. Keep it up show!

I'm pretty scared of extensions... hope the drama can keep getting better with each episode and finish with a bang! So far so good for me though... from ep 3 to ep 7 - they are all so good, I don't know which one's my fav!

Seo In Guk is a gem. I've only seen him in Master's Sun and find him quite all right there. Wanted to check out his Reply 1997 and Rascal Sons and his other works, but I can't find the time! So I checked out his variety show appearances instead. OMG, I had actually watched those episodes of Happy Together, Star Golden Bell and yes, even the Qualification Of Men Nella Fantasia Choir (he had red hair then!) before but I didn't took notice of him last time! Dang, there are no Eng-subbed vids of I Live Alone, well the raw vids alone are hard to find.

He's great the way he is. Losing weight is fine as long as he stays healthy, but I hope he keeps his trademark under-the-left-eye mole, teeth and everything else. Oh another thing, he hasn't served his military service yet...

I tried to find I Live Alone eng-subbed, in vain .. But I was satisfied with him just being himself .. His morning face is heaven !

He's all right in Master Sun because the script didn't demand him to do something more challenging. So I recommend you to watch his drama when he is the main lead: Answer Me 1997 (it was his breakout role) and Another Parting (a very short webdrama). He was amazing in both roles.

Thank god for TvN because the big 3 shows just aren't doing much for me now, and this show seems like an oasis in a desert to me right now. They also seem to not be working for the Korean public too since MLFtS was the last successful (ratings in late teens/20%) drama that has aired. We've been in a drought since Feb., but CSL helped me to survive a little. Most of the time extentions kinda ruins the flow of dramas, but if it allows In Guk to stay on my laptop screen a little longer I'm all for it. :)

Maybe, I am exaggerating but I don't want this series to end. It's such a fun series to watch, the actors are great and they're not the overly popular actors/actresses often appearing in other shows- which I think is nice.

The female lead plays her unique character well, just like SIG and the rest. :-)

Hope all goes well for this show, and hoping they make more shows like this.
