Fated To Love You: Episode 10

Our newlywed hero spends a good chunk of time this hour wrestling with desire, which is hilarious and heartwarming and all kinds of fun. But even though we know the good times can’t last, Fated To Love You still proves to be the kind of show that’s sweet enough to give you diabetes and touching enough to get you right where it hurts when it needs to. I won’t deny that this episode makes for one hell of a ride, but at least it doesn’t forget to pave the way with a little (or a lot of) humor—and most of all, heart.

As far as ratings go, Fated dropped to third place at 9.7. It’s Okay rose to second with 10.1%, while Joseon Gunman maintained the slim lead at 11.7%.

EPISODE 10 RECAP

After Gun swoops in to kiss her, a long moment passes before he opens his eyes. A tear falls down his cheek before he slowly, ever-so-slowly, pulls away.

But he doesn’t go far, and keeps his arms tightly wound around her as he looks into her eyes. “What can’t you do in this world?” He asks, in response to her concern that they can’t be. Then he gently holds her chin as he leans in for a true kiss.

Mi-young reciprocates this time, letting herself fall deeper into his embrace as he envelops her even closer. The emotions flowing into that kiss are beyond palpable, so much so that I’m getting misty-eyed—and this isn’t even a sad moment! But on the bright side, that’s how you kiss. Learn from this, dramaland. Learn from this.

After that heated exchange, Gun cutely fishes for a compliment for getting her Keddongie mug back, and Mi-young laughs shyly as she gives him two thumbs up.

He smiles as he notes that the snail has finally returned to her old self, otherwise known as his wife, Kim Mi-young. Then he takes her and Keddongie out for something to eat. Can they be any cuter?

Mi-young is already asleep by the time Gun crawls into bed with a predatory smirk. He looks ecstatic when she unknowingly nestles into him, and gives the camera a rakish wink as if to say that he’s totally got this one in the bag.

He’s only momentarily dismayed when she murmurs Keddongie’s name in her sleep, but the mood is truly broken when she says it again. Gun looks like he’s in physical pain as he has to pry himself away from her. Actually, he probably is in pain.

Cut to: Gun taking a cold shower while complaining that the water just isn’t cold enough. Hahahaha.

Cut to: Gun at the doctor’s the next morning with dark circles under his eyes and a haunted expression as he tells the doctor that there’s another him inside, a wild him, that’s been threatening to come out more and more lately. Okay, I know Gun is a hypochondriac, but this? This is amazing.

Much like his last insomnia-induced rant, Gun gets very animated as he screams about having kissed the sexy snail, how he burns up whenever he sees the snail, and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH! That’s not my reaction, he literally just devolves into making incoherent noises.

I love how the doctor calmly responds that while it is hard for a normal man to love a snail, desiring someone you like is totally natural and healthy. When Gun goes further into how he can’t control himself when it comes to Mi-young, the doctor’s only advice is for him to find a way to cope—and above all, stay calm.

Gun turns to religion and hymns, but soon realizes that doesn’t work when he turns to look at his shoulder…

…And finds a bespectacled snail crawling there as the creepy tune from Queen Seon-deok plays. HAH. By the time he pries the imaginary thing off, Manager Tak and Yong come running in with all the national newspapers—and Gun and Mi-young’s love story is on everyone’s front page.

Gun seems upset as he calls Yong closer and asks if leaking the information to the press was his doing, and when Yong meekly replies yes, Gun smacks him on the bottom as he declares, “Good job!” Yong is on cloud nine, leaving Manager Tak feeling unloved.

In her attempt to find a way to drive a rift between Mi-young and Gun, Mama Young accidentally happens upon Gun’s man cave… and the divorce agreement. Jackpot.

Mi-young and Gun go for an ultrasound, and adorably wave hello to the sonogram of Keddongie. Even though their baby is still just a speck with a strong heartbeat, Gun happily claims that Keddongie already has his good looks.

It’s hilarious when Doctor Moon notes that Keddongie’s head is just a little big, which has both Gun and Mi-young fervently denying that such a trait comes from their side of the family (it’s only because small heads/faces are considered more beautiful, not because anything is abnormal with the baby).

But when Gun tries his best to get the doctor to spill the baby’s gender, he soon finds himself outnumbered, since Doctor Moon takes Mi-young’s side in arguing that gender isn’t important. When Gun tries again by asking whether they should buy blue or pink clothes, Mi-young says that they can just buy both.

At the baby store, Gun is quick to point out one of the employees as being their prenatal class teacher. And while it’s true that she looks just like Teacher Park, the employee claims she’s her twin. I hope this becomes a recurring joke.

After Gun goes on a buying spree when it comes to all the baby things, Mi-young stops at a display of a mother, father, and child all in matching outfits. It’s childish but cute, and since Gun can’t say no to her, he buys the set so that the three of them can wear it in the future, along with two teddy bears Mi-young thinks Keddongie will like—because just having one of something is never enough for him.

At home, our happy couple wears their couple PJs while arranging their bedroom into a nursery. They couldn’t be happier, even as Gun asks when the baby is due (Valentine’s Day), and when Mi-young’s birthday is (the day after tomorrow, which means the baby’s eight months out).

But Gun is shocked when she says her birthdate is July 23rd, because that’s his birthday too. Awwwwwwww. They continue the fated birthday synchronization conversation in bed, where Gun makes the sweetest eyes at her. It’s a happy moment that somehow breaks my heart. It’s just that good.

Once Mi-young tells him that she normally spent her birthdays alone, Gun asks her what she’d like to do this year: “If you want me to, I’ll even pluck a star from the sky for you.” *dies*

Mi-young claims she doesn’t want anything special, because it’ll be enough for her if the three of them spend the day together. But since Gun offered, she returns the same to him: “What about you? Is there something you want?”

I love how Gun’s all, Why? Would you get it for me? He keeps inching closer to Mi-young as he asks if she’s sure, and if he can really ask for anything

…Before he points to Keddongie’s mug and says he wants one too. It’s extra adorable how Gun later curses the fact that he bought two teddy bears when they end up forming a boundary between him and Mi-young in bed that night. Hah.

After Se-ra gets in trouble for being mentally checked out during practice, her friend approaches her out of concern—she knows Se-ra’s been taking sleeping pills at night and that she’s been growing increasingly distant.

“I thought that I would feel better as time passed,” Se-ra says as she begins to cry. “But it just keeps getting harder. I can’t take it. If I could go back in time… if I could have done things differently…”

Mi-young’s arrival at Daniel’s cafe jars him from staring at a picture of him and his sister, and when she asks for a favor he cheerfully says he’ll help her with anything she needs.

…But when she tells him that she wants to make something special for Gun’s birthday, his face falls. Aw.

Daniel watches her silently and intently as she paints a picture of Gun on a mug, and instead of writing his name, writes “Keddongie’s Dad.” He seems to be humoring her when he says she should pursue art classes, but he also seems half-serious before he asks when her birthday is so he can get her a present.

He’s surprised to hear that it’s tomorrow, the same as Gun’s, and since he’d rather not pass it off as fate he mumbles that it’s not so uncommon to have the same birthday. Oh, Daniel. I love you, but you’re hopeless.

Per Gun’s instructions, Manager Tak has made all sorts of arrangements and reservations for his birthday… but the reason he’s trying extra hard is because he’s jealous of Yong, so it’s uncomfortable and hilarious when he asks for assurance that he did a good job offering his bum to be approval-smacked by Gun.

It comes as a surprise to him when Gun tells him it’s Mi-young’s birthday too, and that can only mean one thing in Manager Tak’s eyes: Fate! Gun mulls over that, and denies that he’s tired when Manager Tak worries about his appearance. Eek, he’s perfectly healthy, right? Right?!

Mama Yong saves herself in the eyes of the head elder when she delivers Gun’s divorce agreement to him. She knows it’ll be the end of Gun, and tells the elder that he better finish him off with one blow this time.

At home, Mi-young makes Yong a seafood soup with a special chewy surprise: fish eyes. Yong is grossed out, but smiles through it in order not to hurt Mi-young’s feelings before he tells her she doesn’t need to stay with him.

But Mi-young surprises him when she says she wants to stay, especially after he tells her that he’s used to eating alone. “Then I’ll keep you company from now on,” Mi-young declares. “We’re family now, after all.” Yong is touched, even if he still thinks his hyung is scary.

That night, Mi-young writes another letter to Keddongie in his scrapbook in order to tell him about her and his father’s shared birthdays and how she finds it fascinating that she shares so many similarities with Gun when she thought that they were two completely different people.

In the morning, Gun goes looking for his snail with snail hands that quickly morph into Thriller hands when he spots her coming out of the shower wearing only a towel. Is it because Mi-young’s not wearing her glasses that she can’t tell he’s scanning her like a barcode?

He has to remind her that they’ll be celebrating their birthdays today, and sinks to his knees when she goes to get dressed. “I wish I was that towel!” he cries. Haha.

Thanks to Mama Young and the head elder, news of Gun and Mi-young’s divorce agreement hits all the major newspapers. An emergency Lee Clan meeting is called, with the head elder feigning ignorance as he all but screams over the shame this has brought them. During his tirade, Gun pats Mi-young’s hand for support and solidarity.

Grandma Wang can’t believe what she’s hearing and falls into her chair in grief when the pair doesn’t deny it, while the head elder accuses Mi-young of all sorts of terrible designs, even demoting her status as “madam” to just “agasshi.” Gun’s defense that she to do with the divorce agreement doesn’t work on so many hard-headed elders.

Gun instinctively says “Mom” when Mi-young’s mom comes bursting through the doors after hearing the news, causing Mom to turn on him angrily: “What did you call me? Mom?!

Even Mom thinks her daughter agreed to receive money in exchange for the baby, and attempts to drag her out kicking and screaming if she has to. “Mom,” Mi-young ventures desperately, “I love him.”

But Mom won’t hear it, and eventually pulls Mi-young out of the room. The head elder tsks that such low class people became part of their family, but is quieted when Gun warns him in a low voice that he can say what he wants about him, but isn’t allowed to defame Mi-young or her mother.

Outside, Mi-young tries to tell Mom that it’s not Gun’s fault when she agreed to the divorce as well, and begs her to consider the circumstances with which they got married in the first place. Most of all, she doesn’t want anyone to think Gun is a bad guy, which has Mom infuriated—even after all this, Mi-young dares to take Gun’s side?

Gun runs outside to beg Mom’s forgiveness, repeating over and over again that he did wrong as he asks her not to take Mi-young away. Mom at least considers him enough to say that she’s liked him ever since he married Mi-young.

And whether or not the agreement is legally binding or not doesn’t matter to Mom, as she tells her son-in-law with tears in her eyes, “You hurt my daughter. You took my daughter and made her miserable, I know that very well!”

When she asks if there’s any reason why she shouldn’t take her daughter away, Gun’s agonized expression says yes, even if he can’t find the words. Knowing that, he has no choice but to let Mom take Mi-young away, though they’re immediately met with a horde of reporters outside.

Mom does her best to try and protect her daughter, but there’s no use. Daniel, who was on his way to their house, is only able to catch a glimpse of Mi-young before she’s rushed away.

While Se-ra perks up at the news of Gun’s broken marriage, Mi-young apologizes to Mom for making her upset. There’s no more anger left in Mom, just pity and sadness as she asks her daughter why she always insists on enduring everything alone.

Grandma Wang is in worse shape at home, forcing Gun to apologize to her while she’s unconscious and hooked up to an IV. Gun: “I had such a difficult time when I first got married… so I did it even though I knew it was petty. Because I thought I at least had to do that so I could endure. But now, Grandma, there’s a place in my heart that’s deafening and awfully empty… empty. I’m going to take care of all this and make you smile, so you can get angry, but just don’t get sick, okay?”

After he leaves, Grandma opens her eyes—she’d been listening the whole time. And just like Mom, her anger has also subsided.

Manager Tak tells Gun just how badly the divorce news has impacted the company, but Gun couldn’t care less about that right now when there’s something much more important, as he numbly explains: “Today is our snail’s birthday. I shouldn’t be like this right now.”

That’s all well and good according to Manager Tak, except he doesn’t know how Gun can fix that mess—it’s not like they’re Romeo And Juliet. But something about that reference gives Gun an idea.

The mob gathered outside is in for an unexpected surprise when Gun, Manager Tak, and Lawyer Hong burst through the doors dressed as high school students (a throwback to another Jang Hyuk movie, Volcano High). Their ballsy act manages to fool the reporters, who wonder who those “students” are as Gun and Manager Tak run far, far away. It’s completely ridiculous, but totally hilarious. We needed this.

As they run like Mario and Luigi down the street, Manager Tak tells Gun that he’s already made arrangements with Mr. Choi and President Park to help Mi-young escape the mob in order to meet them.

The Soapsuds Duo feed the members of the press en masse in order to distract them as Yong, Ji-yeon, and Mi-young exit the restaurant also disguised as high school students. (This time, it’s a Successful Story of a Bright Girl reference inception’d into a Volcano High reference—Jang Nara’s name tag is her character’s name from that drama.)

When the mob isn’t convinced, Yong makes a scene by confessing his love to “noona” Mi-young, only for Ji-yeon to go off-script by acting like the jilted third wheel. She uses the opportunity to plant not one, but two on Yong (hah), which gives Mi-young the perfect opportunity to sneak away.

While Manager Tak notifies Gun that an emergency board meeting has been called to have him dismissed, Se-ra grabs a plane ticket to fly to Seoul immediately. All the while Mi-young waits at the approved rendezvous point, where Daniel calls her because he hasn’t been able to stop worrying.

Meanwhile, Manager Tak pulls a sudden U-turn away from Mi-young in an effort to get Gun to the board meeting in time to stop his own dismissal. But he’s forced to pull over regardless when Gun becomes dangerously adamant.

He tries following Gun on foot to beg him to just call Mi-young and tell her that he can’t meet her, but it’s like Gun isn’t even listening. “I’ll be back after I tell her happy birthday,” Gun insists in a frighteningly detached sort of way. “I’ll be right back.” Something’s wrong. Something’s very, very wrong.

Manager Tak finally loses it with Gun as he grabs him by the lapels and tries to shake some sense back into him. It means something when he drops to banmal as he addresses Gun like a friend: “Come back to your senses, Gun-ah!”

But Gun is as limp as a rag doll in his grasp, and only slightly more responsive as he challenges Manager Tak’s distrust in him before asking, “Do you know what I have to do right now? Don’t hold me back.”

The world spins around Gun as he tries to forge his own path on foot… before his eyes roll back into his head and he drops to the asphalt like a sack of potatoes.

Mi-young, completely unaware, tries calling Gun with no response. She reassures Keddongie that daddy must be very busy, and that they’ll just wait for him.

Keddongie’s dad (*sob*) is rushed to the ER as Daniel pulls up near Mi-young. He doesn’t interfere with her waiting, choosing instead to just watch over her for now.

A worried Doctor Moon examines a still-unconscious Gun at the hospital, and orders an MRI… which means Gun’s wedding band has to be removed. You’re killing me, show. KILLING ME.

After hours pass, Daniel gives Mi-young a call to ask how her birthday is going. It’s an opportunity for Mi-young to confide in him, but she chooses instead to inject happiness into her tone as she lies to Daniel that everything’s fine. In fact, she’s about to have dinner with Gun.

It’s heartbreaking that she’s trying to keep Daniel from worrying, even if it doesn’t work. He still walks up to her with a bag and the excuse that he’s delivering Gun’s mug so she can give him his birthday present.

“You came by because of this?” Mi-young asks, surprised. “No,” Daniel admits. “I didn’t come because of this cup. I came because I was worried about you.”

He ignores her interjections in order to ask how long she’s going to let herself be hurt by Gun. She’s confused by his sudden intensity even as she insists, with a smile, that Gun hasn’t hurt her. But Daniel sees it another way, since he knows she just lied to him about Gun being with her.

“Ever since you met him, you’ve always put up with it, suffered, and waited. But does it really not affect you?” he asks. “I wish you wouldn’t do that anymore. I can’t stand to see it now. I want to be brave about my feelings with you.” Omo, is he admitting that he’s going to pursue her?

When Gun slowly comes to at the hospital, a blurry figure hovers nearby and takes his hand. But when he squints to focus, he sees that it’s not Mi-young, but Se-ra.

While Daniel and Mi-young stand at a crossroads, Se-ra tells a very confused Gun, “It’s me.”

COMMENTS

If this is the kind of emotional havoc this show can wreak when we’re only at the halfway mark, then lord have mercy. And to think that none of this angst was caused by a fundamentally ridiculous misunderstanding between our two leads. Even after spending the last thirty minutes with my heart in my throat, I still can’t sing enough praises for this show.

I had an inkling that Mama Yong wouldn’t be as harmless as we wished she would be, but her level of maliciousness still managed to surprise me. Even if there had been more than a minuscule effort to humanize her, it still wouldn’t have made what she did any less terrible. Yes, she’s had it hard and that sucks for her, but she’s spent enough time with Mi-young at this point to know her as a person. And anyone who’s spent time with Mi-young would know that she’s a sweet, innocent soul who would rather put herself in harm’s way if it means someone else doesn’t have to be—so the fact that Mama Yong could still release those documents knowing that it would do irrevocable damage to Mi-young’s life (not to mention the growing one still in her stomach) was beyond morally repugnant. That woman is dead to me.

Despite having a horrible human being for a mother, one of my favorite moments from this episode was actually the understated moment of bonding between Mi-young and Yong. Even if he didn’t have enough courage to step up to defend her during that nightmarish family meeting, it was enough that he pitched in to help her escape. I know it wasn’t even a huge point the show was trying to make when it had much bigger fish (eyes) to fry, but it was sweet just the same.

What made this big blowup especially hard to watch was that Gun and Mi-young were technically innocent, and very much in love despite what everyone (literally everyone) now believes. It’s true that Gun drafted the divorce agreement when he shouldn’t have, but his explanation this episode was poignant precisely because he recognized his wrong and the state of mind he was in when it happened. And we know that he had the agreement amended, even if we don’t know how, so the original would’ve been moot if not for Mama Yong and that inexplicably-hateful clan elder. (Seriously, if there’s only one son born per generation, shouldn’t he care even a little about Gun?)

At the same time, it’s easy to see how their relationship could be misconstrued, which made me so proud of Mom for at least stopping to think twice about Gun. As for Daniel, it’s kind of hard to blame him for getting the wrong idea when he had no way to get the right one as an outsider looking in. All he knows is that Gun gave Mi-young the divorce agreement, that the news broke, and that Mi-young waited all day for a husband who never showed up. He has no idea that Gun’s changed since he last saw that document, or that the situation itself has changed—but he was able to prove for himself how unreliable a narrator Mi-young can be when she lied to protect Gun.

So while we have to wait another week to see how the third wheel mechanics are going to play out now that Se-ra’s back and Daniel’s officially throwing his hat in the ring, just think: It’ll all be worth it. How do I know? Because Fated To Love You is still too good to be anything less. (Unless Gun gets amnesia.)

Agreed. Sexually frustrated Gun is freaking hilarious. A couple of times throughout the episode I caught myself wishing he'd just pounce on, er I mean, seduce his wife. There's really nothing stopping him and her from getting it on. Even medically and for the baby it's fine since it's still early stages. Putting himself forward and facing potential rejection is gotta be better than all that suffering with sleeplessness and late night cold showers.

I can't agree more. Also, the subs i saw were the same......"even her begind is so kind". Plus, i was totally touched with yong's change of heart. And the escape plan was so damn hilarious!! =D
*SPOILER ALERT*
Its just plain sad that our prayers of him not having amnesia were unansweres by the kdrama gods and they did the complete opposite!!
*END OF SPOILER ALERT*

I was shouting at my screen when Daniel was all "Gun is a horrible husband for making you wait" or whatever. Me (at my screen): He's bloody dying.....give him a break!!! >_<

I keep on getting mad at MY for NOT noticing how much in pain her husband is from being sexually frustrated. That man NEEDS herrrr

Me too!! i'm like how is it possible that u can't see this man so desires u, it's so obvious in the way he looks at her. The scene where she was in her towel, the way Gun was looking her up and down while biting his lips, the desire was etched on his face for a moment there. All i could think was Lady. are. you. blind?

Yeah, I was like "come on, that man needs you, the way he reacts to you, it's obvious he can hardly hold it!!"
Anyway, that was a good, intense episode and the actors are awesome!! but I'm afraid of the direction the show will take now..I hope it will still be well-written and not too far fetched...Since I've seen the original version, I wonder how they will deal with the following line in this version!!!
I see your point, guys, about the amnesia plot device but at the same time, it would be kind of interesting if they did something like in TW drama "Autumn's Concerto" because in that drama the amnesia plot device was brilliantly developed and so interesting to watch!!

0

True. But the way the story is being told, Gun and MY haven't consummated their marriage. Technically, a one night stand while drugged wouldn't count.

That was absolutely a Joker mouth they put on him!

Joker quote:
"Madness is the emergency exit. You can just step outside, and close the door on all those dreadful things that happened. You can lock them away...forever."

Love how the show is using little details like this to inform the story.

During that scene I was also thinking about how sad it is that he doesn’t truly think he has someone to turn to. Instead of a father, he has a doctor. Instead of a mother, he has a psychiatrist. Instead of a brother he has a manager. He’s learned not to trust family. He's bottling it up and it's taking a toll.

In his world, only MY recognizes his loneliness.

I couldn't even sit through it. Had to pause it a few times to get my head around the fact that Gun was failing her on so many levels. I was thinking:

Why aren’t you defending your relationship with MY at the family meeting? Were your declarations and grand gestures of love just emotionally impulsive and superficial?

As the named heir to the family, why wouldn’t you have called the mistress on the carpet for trespassing your private quarters, and insist she leave the house immediately? Why wouldn’t you have deflected criticism by shifting the topic of the meeting to how grossly inappropriate that was?

Why wouldn’t you say that the agreement was never fully executed and has since been amended?

Why would you leave MY’s declaration of love hanging, with no reciprocal expression?

*sulks*

And then there was how the music was informing us:

All the songs playing in the Gun/MY scenes emphasized leaving, while the ones in the Daniel/MY scenes emphasized finding love.

The song Gun was humming when reading the Bible was actually “Clementine”. That song's about a girl (that was light and like a fairy) who drowns (song says it's 'in bubbles') while her lover simply looks on because he can't swim. Although he initially misses her, he quickly forgets her by getting involved with her sister.

If that man gets amnesia I'll lose respect for this drama. This has been one of the most refreshingly heartfelt dramas I've watched in a long long time. It defies dramaland standbys time and time again, so if they lean on the amnesia crutch I might have to rethink how highly I thought of it.

I HOPE it's not amnesia either.... his character in the original didn't even have a disease, which as long as it doesn't cause amnesia I'm fine with as it adds some depth to his character. This show is so good it doesn't need or even have any place in it for amnesia. I will be highly disappointed if they go that route.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it...but isn't there some mysterious illness that effects the men of his family. The hereditary illness might involvery amnesia or something else, which I hope helps the show avoid the amnesia trope.

This drama is the Korean version of a Taiwanese drama which happens to be close to my heart.

And I can’t help but admire the writers of this Korean remake. It has the elements of what I love about Korean dramas; cuteness, romance, surprises, and heart-breaking scenes… but it magically keeps the charm of the original (I must say, it’s the characters that i love the most).

This is, for me, a better version and all that little changes in the story, it’s all worth it.
Everything that is lacking in the original version, I think it’s all in here.
And just a little spoiler, you may not have to worry about “amnesia” because this drama is more about "not forgetting". (unless, there will be a major change in the plot)

I just need to warn everyone that we will shed more tears in the next few episodes.

I completely agree with you. This remake and A witch's romance have kept the charm of the original story line but have also made each story fresh. I have actually preferred the Korean drama retelling as well.

hahahaha....

adding on to GF's summary, let's start a bet right here:

The case of blue balls is so severe that Gun:

1) has Amnesia and pounces on the first female he lays eyes on - Se Ra
2) wakes up looking for his 'snail' Mi Young

the way it looks, my vote is 1.......

Your ending thought was totally mine too...The build up of this show has been awesome and this new twist should not disappoint...unless if they make Gun have amnesia...I will then entirely lose faith a perfect storyline is possible. So Please Please drama gods do not let the writers screw this story up with amnesia...so over that unnecessary angst ridden trope.

I actually had to pause the show and do a couple breathing exercises when Gun collapsed. Not because I was concerned for him (he's got main character immunity, be grand) but because I just got past all the *SPOILERS FOR A DIFFERENT DRAMA* Trot Lovers amnesia bullshit *OK YOU'RE SAFE NOW* and I would hate for Fated to stoop to that level. I'm so glad you said it, because now I know I'm not the only one praying that it doesn't happen!

I knew I would like this drama (I have a special spot in my heart for contract marriages) but I had no idea I would love it just this much. Thanks so much for the recap and the comments!

Yes, but the Korean version has gone on a very different path, since the beginning. The characters are so different than the originals, especially the hero. Since very early on, Lee Gun takes good care of Mi Young, he's so much more caring towards the heroine, he's also aware of his feelings for her... Every plotline is dealt differently in this remake and for me way better..So I think they will continue making show of their own...I think the couple will be apart but we have no way of knowing how since everything is already different from the TW version..
On the plus side, I'm really glad Sera isn't entirely the "bad guy" in this version...

No the main guy in the Taiwanese drama never had amnesia, while attempting to make the moves on his ex-wife (leading lady) she found out what he was up to and had him go in a barrel then she rolled the barrel down a hill. When they got him out he was temporarily blinded, not for a long time, but in order to keep her with him, and make the moves on her, while keeping her from the 2nd lead (Baron Chen) he pretended that he couldn't see,

Required fields are marked *

Sera was on her way to see Gun so the first thing that she would have done upon landing in Seoul is call him. Someone would have answered his phone and told her.

Miyeong, on the other hand, was waiting for Gun to call her, which he obviously couldn't do.

It wouldn't occur to anyone else to call Gun's 'contract marriage' wife, apart from Secretary Tak, but he would have been too busy stopping the board meeting and dealing with the fallout of the CEO being taken to A&E.

It was improbable for MY not to know that Gun is in the hospital, though. I thought one of the first things hospitals do is to contact his/her guardian. Shouldn't that be the wife/husband?

That's what I was thinking. A trip from downtown NYC to downtown Seoul takes a minimum of 17 hours. For her to get to the hospital first, she'd need a wormhole.

In the scene with Se-Ra and the rest of the ballet company, the camera focused on two people speaking and it sounded like Japanese. Maybe Se-Ra flew to Korea from Japan (2 hours?) which would definitely be a much shorter flight time-wise than flying from New York (15 - 17 hours).

0

Thanks August, I didn't notice that detail. After reading your comment I remembered that the scene was clear to show us her ticket. I just looked at it again, and sure enough, like you said the ticket says it's a 10:10am flight from Haneda to Incheon.

But to make that flight she would have had to leave for the airport by 8:30. Could she have seen the news, dressed and made a round trip to a travel agent (printed tickets!) by 8:30 am?

What could explain it is, we were led to assume that the flight is happen on their birthday, July 23, but the date on the ticket is Oct 25th.

They also gave us a marker that the unborn baby is 1 month along. It's hard to imagine that SR would land a prima ballerina role in NY, go through rehearsals, complete the entire run of the show, and begin a tour in Japan, all within 30 days. That timing seems a little tight to me.

I point this out to say, until next Wednesday maybe we can hold out hope that the show was just trying to punk us.

0

But Mi Young did call Gun, and got the "phone not in service" message. There was no excuse for Tak not to call her, or answer the call she made to Gun, if it was after he fainted.

MY called him when he had passed out; his phone was ringing when he was lying flat out in the middle of the road!
Then she figured he was busy, and just kept waiting.

IMO, couples r better off when their elders don't interfere in their marital crisis. If MY's mom didn't drag her away, she'd be beside him, or at least at their home when it happened. It's the forced separation that created misunderstandings, a cleft, and an opening for Sera.

And he really should either have a lock on his bedroom door, his cave entrance or a safe in their somewhere, where that document belongs!!!

That scene when Se Ra got to the hospital? room? I was hoping his sick-induced vision will be too blur to focus on her, and that he might utter out MY's name instead. *did not happen*.

Ok I'm totally loving the show and especially how well they play their characters even with Gun's bad hairdo and stuff. Just one thing, how did Sera manage to get to Korea so fast? The news in the papers came out only on their birthdays. As per time difference Korea is ahead so technically speaking if she left immediately she would probably arrive the next da; which certainly wasn't the case at the end. Am i missing something?

0

Required fields are marked *

Ya, it's unrealistic that Sera got to Korea and his hosp room so fast. But it might be too much to hope that it's only his addled mind seeing a non-existent Sera.

0

Dramaland transportation laws know no bounds :(

0

I thought Sera was in NY but in the episode, her ticket said from Tokyo, Japan (which explains why they were speaking Japanese during her previous scene). Thus, it wouldn't take too much time for her to travel and get to his hospital. Though I still find it weird that she always gets access to his places so easily and quickly, like when she was waiting in his office when she first came back, especially since she's technically his ex-girlfriend. I would hope that Mi-young was contacted first since she's his wife, but dramas do what they like and don't follow normal conventions when convenient for plot.

0

All very plausible and reasonable arguments except that Dr. Octopus coulda called. I mean, this man has seen them together and it is obvious that they are not faking affection. While Gun was in the MRI machine he could've been calling. (Pout)

Just thought I'd mention that the tune Gun was humming in that hilarious how-to-calm-my-inner-monster scene with the religious books and the snail hallucination was "Oh My Darling, Clementine", which is a reference to yet another of his dramas, "Thank You".

I've been away from Kdramaland for awhile, but returning with FTLY makes me feel like I haven't missed too, too much. It's throwing parodies of shows I actually know left and right. That's a part of its charm~ just so fun! No matter the turn of events to come, I hope the team manages to keep this element.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Pfew. That's good to know. I was worried that they were using it to telegraph the direction of the story. Its a chirpy tune, but has an awfully Grimm set of lyrics to use as a child's lullaby. (As a children's tune, it'd be right up there with 'Rock-a-bye Baby' and 'Ring Around The Rosy').

The lyrics essentially are about a man who loses his sweetheart when she disappears 'in bubbles'. He watches her drown but can't rescue her because he doesn't know how to swim. Though he misses her at first, he soon forgets her by getting involved with someone else. A sister. The song stood out to me because the writers have laid the groundwork for all of those themes.

*Hoping it's a coincidence*

Interesting tidbit of information about Korea for you guys. It's against the law for a doctor to tell expecting parents the sex of their baby. They had to do put that law in place in order to combat the high number of abortions families were having because they didn't want to have female children. I'm pretty sure it's not a serious issue in Korea like it used to be, but the law is still in place. So that whole conversation where Lee Gun tries to find out the babies sex has a cultural context to it.

Required fields are marked *

I'm second-guessing that. Weren’t both of Gun’s parents killed in a car crash...which was summarily written off as bad ‘family fate’ ? Was there more to that story?

0

The thing with this show is, I find it hard to take it seriously. It has a tendency to ridicule itself, and turn tail to humour (like the schoolboy Romeo-Juliet act) whenever the going gets too serious. Which, for me, is its strength, really, because I'm not signing up for emotional torture. :-/ So I'm just going to sit back and let them throw amnesia/terminal illness/second-lead-villainy/whatever at me because I'm still confident FTLY will let me have the last laugh. Hopefully. *fingers crossed*

0

You're probably right.

What gets me is when the writers are making great use of meta, symbolism, imagery. Seeing that makes me want to really dig into the details. But if they start playing fast-and-loose with those details it leaves you feeling like a silly over-analyzing fangirl. LOL

Ohmeeegosh! What an awesome episode! Never had an episode that could make me go into peals of giggles and laughter and then instantly have me turn morose a second later…
Sigh, the things you do to my heart, drama!

First, the beginning of the episode was da bomb. Finally owning up to their feelings openly was good solid ground that the couple needed to stand on for the storm that's a brewin'… But to me, my favorite part was when MiYoung and Gun just laid in bed and just TALKED. They were conversing like an ordinary couple, just getting to know one another's pasts and dreams. Gun's simple question of what MiYoung did for her birthday was truly poignant and sweet~

Second, MiYoung's bonding with Yong was just awww… I was a bit hesitant to trust him, but the boy needs a little lovin' (which JiYeon helpfully provided hurhur). Anyway, I hope Yong grows a pair and shows his mom the light. ^^

Third, Gun… is so… weird. LOL Never would I have imagined that a main lead with such an obnoxious personality be sooo attractive. Dude, get a hold of yourself! Obviously you just wanna spend every waking moment by her side. duh~ Hopefully that confused look is not "Who are you?", but "Where the heck is my SNAIL?". Find the lurve energy within yourself to go find her! and energy for that limpy hair to bounce back into those wavy locks!

There's so much more I could write about, such as huge evidence of family devotion, Sera's poor decision making skills, Daniel's suaveness and the American's speech therapy in progress but I'll stop here. :D Can't wait for moarrr

How is it that no one has mention the kiss scene? Was that not swoon worthy or WHAT?!!!! OMG to be kissed like that by jang hyuk ... i'm sorry but that was a real kiss!

This episode was a emotional roller coaster for me... I was laughing on cloud 9 at the beginning and then crying my eyes out at the end... wtf haven't watched a k-drama in years and I'm so glad that I waited patiently to see the snail couple reunited!

I'm having a panic attack from the wait for the next episodes.. fml

I never thought I would use these two adjectives in the same sentence, but....pervy Gun is sooo cute!!! And yay for the twist in the regular brooding-in-the-shower scene!

I have to decided to un-see the hair in these last two episodes. In my mind, he has the same wavy side-parted look from the earlier episodes. Only way I can reconcile myself to it.

I genuinely don't know what to think about this latest development. Just hoping it's all the stress which has finally got to him and not, you know....freaky brain-explosion of some kind resulting in amnesia.*shudder* And if they ARE going down that route, please, please make him forget everyone and everything, not just Mi-young, because that will definitely be hilarious to watch.

I liked how the little brother Yong bonded with Mi-young in this episode and sort of redeemed himself by helping her sneak out to meet Gun. On the other hand, his mother fell back to being hateful, but I guess you do need someone to do the dirty stuff and throw the wrenches, since the second leads have been surprisingly benign till now.

Am equally hopeful and fearful for next week. *fingers crossed* FTLY, you have my heart, you better not break it!

agree with everything you've said. i think since we've all grown to like/accept that outrageous laughter of his, the show is trying to make loving Gun manageable by giving him this one irreconcilable flaw. man's perfect in every way otherwise.

Yep. That scene was all kinds of adorable. He was so shocked that Gun appreciated him for once, and then his words to MY about being happy to have a hyung in Seoul...it was touching. The boy's obviously been very lonely, and it was nice that we got not just a bit of his story but also saw him being appreciated by Gun, cared for by MY, and being kissed (rather mauled) by MY's friend. :-)

My face was so red from laughing at Gun's angst in the shower hahahaha!

Darn, the first part was so sweet but the ending for the episode got my super worried and anxious again. Drama, please don't spring a fibbed up MY and Daniel scandal because they're all too innocent to have to go through such rubbish!

I swear, if it weren't for Manager Tak's interest in Unnie, I would totally have thought he were gay. From that over-the-top beach holiday getup on the first trip to Yeoul, and the butt smacking. Hah!

I'm rooting for Yong to be a reliable friend for MY. Hopefully, at some later point, he might even able to tell mom that he doesn't really care to snatch up everything from Gun because he's not even truly interested in the business to begin with! And of course, to be appreciative of MY.

Also rooting for Yong. I'm hoping he will be the bridge for Lee Gun and Mi Young. Maybe he will be the one to let Mi Young know that Lee Gun was hospitalized.

I'm worried about this episode's ending too, even though we all know that it's coming.

Thanks HeadsNo2 for the recap and thoughtful comments!
Looking forward to next week's. Cheers! :-)

This episode was a little frustrating for me because I feel like the conflict is slightly forced. It is a huge scandal for the divorce papers to be leaked, but there are many ways to spin it if Gun and Mi Young would speak up louder and clearer and earlier to make sure things are covered. They could show the amended divorce papers, which I am almost 100% sure it's something like Mi Young CAN'T leave him or something along those lines, or they could have a conference and announce how much in love they really are or I dunno ... there were better ways to handle that situation.

I hope the angst stage of the drama is more compelling because I don't quite feel like there is a legitimate reason for their relationship to be so rocky yet.

And can someone PLEASE tell me how the hell Sera found out where Gun was before Mi Young AND ended up in the hospital before her?????? I am thoroughly enjoying this drama, but that screamed contrived to me.

Here's hoping to 개똥이 엄마 아빠 화이팅~

You've a pt.
I was thinking the same when the shit hit the fan for them. Speak Up! Just tell them there'll be no divorce. Gun should be able to do that, in front of the elders, and the reporters. Just say the document is forged, is a private joke, whatever.

totally agree.

SeRa shows up at hospital bed just when Gun opens his eyes...NOT BELIEVING THAT ONE FOR A MINUTE. i am seriously requesting a re-write on that one, i mean, WTH??? W. T. H. /so mad at show atm

let me just say, when show hoodwinked me on that ending, i made sure that even my neighbors, who live 10 acres away, heard my roaring disgust.

had to invite everyone over...rewatch show...just so that my neighbors could see why i was throwing a tantrum on the back porch. and even then, my neighbors were like, what's the prob? OY JUST KILL ME...already.

thanks for your post, btw.

Didn't have time to read through the comment section before I posted earlier, but now wish I would have waited. I thought the exact same thing as you guys! The conflict with Gun / MY and first-one-to-the-bedisde reunion with Gun / SR seemed illogical and forced.

One other thing I'd add, I couldn't believe Gun would leave MY hanging when she said she loved him at the family meeting. He makes no response to that after all the ways he's shown he cares about her? And after leading her to open up to him?

I don't think he has admitted it to himself that he has fallen for her. Because if he had, he wouldn't gone running to his psychiatrist when he found himself wanting her. Hilarious as this scene was, it was interesting that he says he cannot control his actions around MY, and just chucks it up to her weird snail-tantra. Even when he kissed her, his answer to her "We can't be" was a very vague "There is nothing that cannot be in this world". In the back of his mind, Se-ra still is his one true love, no matter how much he cares for Mi-young right now. Which is why I'm hopeful that this strange illness will make him see the light somehow, give him the shock that he needs to stop deluding himself and accept that he has indeed moved on from Se-ra to Mi-young, especially with Daniel now becoming a very real competition.

"One other thing I’d add, I couldn’t believe Gun would leave MY hanging when she said she loved him at the family meeting. He makes no response to that after all the ways he’s shown he cares about her? And after leading her to open up to him?"

I knew this was going to happen. Dont get me wrong. I freaking luv this show more than the Taiwanese version. But the Taiwanese version made more sense. The protagonist in that version is a sneaky little bastard who is perpetually confused by his loyalty and devotion to the Sera character and his new found feelings for the MY character. So it was easy for me to believe certain scenes where he fails to stand up for MY. Because he is a jerk to begin with and he is truly confused. It is almost fun to watch him in the second half of the show when the karma of all his bad acts towards MY catches up with him when he has to plead, beg and deceive her into liking him back. But uri Lee Gun in this version has been so adorable, has always done the right thing - not freaking out on hearing she is pregnant, stopping MY's abortion, deciding to marry MY of his own volition( instead of being tricked into it like in the Taiwanese version ), owning up his mistakes to Sera, declaring his intentions to MY and so on. He has been perfect. So when we see him make mistakes like the above scene, it doesnt make sense.

When I started falling for Lee Gun I was afraid one of two things will happen which will lead to the main couple's split:
a) Either the show will stop making sense by placing scenes like the above scene where Lee Gun fails to stand up to others or Sera( which is so out of character for him ) for MY OR inane plot devices like amnesia
b) Or MY becomes stupid enough to think that Lee Gun does not either want the baby or does not love her enough to want this marriage.

Neither of the above 2 options makes any sense. But I am afraid it is going to be one of the two.

I can't wait for min young to transform..at first it was cute and sad so thay u wanted to root for her..but to continously let people talk down to u and make u look bad without even a word would be tough jus watching..I wouldn't be able to constantly have to stand up for someone when all u do is tell them to stand up for themselves..I ended up skipping almost the entire second half of the show..first the family meeting, in law mom having free range to jus go into their rooms and u don't think they be wise enough to hide a document that important when their cup was alrwady taken out of the room..The side characters at the restaurant I can do withou..The dramatic kid scenes j didn't even watch so I guess they were a distraction of somesort..it's getting the the angst part but I wish stupidity didn't play a role in the situations..Se ha coming back makes for more drama since she us suppose to be a big part of the show..but from wherever she was to korea within the span of a few hours..not to mention being able to get the the hospital is quite you from the stars esique..feels like the show went from shuttle humors to grand gestures of humor which doesn't fit the flow of the show..I or I guess gun is literally over dramatic

Newsflash, Gun: Having sexual desire for your wife is NOT a problem for your therapist. Giving your therapist the mistaken impression that you have sexual desire for a snail IS a problem for you.

That said, please don't stop doing things like that, because it is hysterical.

On another note, this show has taken quite a few notable logic leaps ( for example, Mi Young picking up and drinking out of some random open bottle she just found in the street), but mostly I can just go with it anyway. But the end of this episode really, really frustrated me. How is it that Se Ra is at the hospital and his wife was never even called? What were you doing, Manager Tak? Not your job, obviously...

Geon is such a character and I adore him more and more with each episode. His sexual frustration grew increasingly intense this episode and getting to watch him struggle with that was gold. And I just love how Mi Young has no idea what she's putting him through hee. Also that kiss between them was so sweet, passionate, and raw. The tears also added a nice touch.

Maybe it's because I'm naive but I honestly believed (or rather I desperately wanted to) that the "marriage contract" confrontation between the clan members was going to be the final "OTP problem" of the episode. We were doing soooo good, obviously too good to be true, but I didn't want to think of a scenario worst than what was given...

Of course we then get Geon collapsing at the end of the episode and here we are wondering where that'll take us and what will happen to our OTP.

Nuuuuuuu I wasn't ready! It's been a long while since I've emotionally invested myself in a canonical OTP, and with the ensuing angst headed our way I have not nor am I prepared for it. My heart is too weak already lol.

I don't want to pysch myself out with speculations so I'll wait and see what's in store for us next week! Thanks for the recap!

I thought the opening kiss scene was going to be symbolic of a transition point in their relationship; making our OTP realize that although (like the first kiss) it started based on impulse/imposition, now (like the second kiss) it's grounded in intimacy/connectedness.

But the way he acted in the second half of the episode doesn't make that look likely. :-(

I still rewind today's ep but it's def not my favorite. I stillll berrrry love this show. even in today we had angst it was understandable IMO. like it was yeah his mistake for asking divorce but the face he made and his emotions when my said she liked him. omg my heart.
I know most ppl are turn off that my is weak or not the strong heroine. but I thought it was nice that even tho they were both at fault for divorce she geuninely declared her love for him in front of them. the old my wouldn't be so brave. Idk my personal opinion.

TO EVERYONE WORRIED ABOUT A POSSIBLE AMNESIA PLOT TWIST! I won’t tell you what IS going to happen next, but I will say this....

There Is No Amnesia.

At least not in the original version, and the writers have done a Fabulous job of following the overall flow of the original so far, so I expect them to continue. (That being said, Gun doesn't faint or anything in the original Either, but I don't think that should automatically make any of us worry.)

Hopefully, since the amnesia plot is almost universally hated by EVERYONE ALIVE ON PLANET EARTH and since it's not even in the original anyway, this shouldn’t be considered a spoiler. Or it's a spoiler people will appreciate, lol.

You're welcome.

(Side Note: If I end up being wrong and they decide to throw amnesia into the story, I apologize sincerely for leading you astray.)

Number of thoughts on this SPECTACULAR episode.

1) If you wanta have sex with your wifey poo...FREAKIN' HAVE SEX WITH YOUR WIFEY POO!!!! It's not that hard. Or, well, I guess it sort of...is. Lol.

2) The hospital most definitely would have called Gun's wife, contract marriage or not, to tell her what happened to him. Buuuuuut the writers gotta get us to the next part of the story, so I understand the choice.

Even if it doesn't make any sense.

3) We've definitely hit the moody mid-quarter, guys. Are we all ready? (It will probably be a good idea to keep our teddy bears nearby next week for comfort.)

Oh ok, thank you for sharing that information. Yes, I've been wondering too what they'll show for 10 more episodes if it's 20, because they have set a pretty fast pace. 16 definitely sounds more plausible.

@panda: 16 makes me a bit sad too, but then I think 20 might just be dragging it along half-dead, and so reconcile myself to watching it go out sparkling as ever, even if it is a bit too soon.

I don't understand why they played a piece of music from Queen Seon Deok. None of these actors were in that drama. There is no Mishil like character here, so why? Don't get it.

Of the three dramas competing with one another, I like Fated to Love You best. Joseon Gunman second best. I don't like It's Ok, That's Love at all - even though I'm a fan of Gong Hyo Jin. I don't like any of the characters in that drama.

I'm hoping we get to see that as well. Fans on soompi pointed out that Mi Young was wearing the same yellow dress she had worn when sending Geon off to work in the previous episode. It probably happened before he went to work and the scene may have been edited out? Hopefully not, it could be a flashback?

it could be they clicked that Jang Nara did the hairwashed bit in babyfaced beauty and doing up the tie in both that drama and wedding and decided it was too much to use it again, or most like he is indeed blind either temp or whatever and she been called back to look after him..thus washing of hair...a very romantic moment in any drama.

What amazes me about this show is that even though they have trotted out a lot of tropes, and they ask us to suspend our disbelief frequently, I never mind. The acting is so on point, the directing is so focused, and the laughs come so often that I'm willing to forgive almost anything. This is a gem, and Jang Hyuk and Jang Na Ra are why.

I'll probably bust a gut if they gave us an amnesia fakeout just like they did with King of Dramas. There's one thing i don't understand. Gun likes Miyoung, doesn't he??? Then why dint he just tell mom so when she asked him for a reason not to take Miyoung back??? I hope he can atleast tell Sera that he is over her. Just please tell her directly. Don't complicate things further.

He should have just told mom:
I need to be with my wife and baby. There is a huge misunderstanding that needs to be sort out, and I need her here to hold my hand.

There are some blogg site that have recapped the TW-version,

I have to say that this version is sooo much better, the laughs, the cuteness, the chemistry of the OTP etc much better than the lead in the other version, he was very slow on the up take for his feelings for the snail, he was mean, selfish, always promising something then failing to live up to that promise and always taking ex-girlfriend side...which was cruel to the snail.

the snail in that version was far tooo meek, whereas this snail is soft but strong willed.

the TW version was melo and even entered the makjang territory if I remember correctly. This show stays true to the original in that all the key moments are acted out, but they put different spins and twist in this one so it is like a whole different new drama not a remake.

The ex in the other version was very spiteful, very nasty, very selfish, whereas Se Ra is not so, its realistic that she hurts, and can not understand why what happened to her love life...so far she has not been nasty, just a victim of circumstances, trying to get back what she had.

Grandmother in both version are lovely and very much into the Snail, although the TW granny went with the flow according to her grandsons wishes, whereas this granny makes it clear that she is disappointed in GUN.

There was no elders to contend with in the TW one. The flow of this K version is far better, whereas the TW you couldn't believe the angst and the totally disbelief that the main lead was soooo selfish and his growth was very long in coming. Gun is far better, true to his words and his feelings, he is always putting and think of how his snails feels her wants and likes and needs first, whereas the TW male lead was sometimes an asshole to his snail.

I don't think I have given any Spoliers away (apologies if I did, not intentionly, just wanted to give Madkdr some info)

now you put it that way, no wonder i feel the K-version is so flat. the remake is trying hard to make all characters likable to the audience. in the original we tend to hate, get annoyed or root for certain characters. in this k-version, i just feel neutral and indifferent because everyone is sooo nice. i remember people online plotting revenge on the male lead and his gf because they were so spiteful, or sending post it notes with "Jia You Chen Xin Yi" to the female lead to grow a spine. haha..

I just have to say it. Dude, if you waNT sOMe, JUST ASK. But I'll take sexually frustrated Gun any day because it is so hilarious. It's so funny how Mi Young is totally oblivious to it all. I will say that I can't see squat without my glasses (I'm THAT blind), so her not being able to see him checking her out is a totally legit excuse. :P

I agree with some of you that this episode felt like a lot of forced unnecessary conflict. Why didn't they just come out with it, like "yeah we were dumb, it was a spur of the moment thing, we like each other now, it's null and void, we just wanna do the happy family, sexy times thing." But I guess they need some problem for the next few episodes. I just get sorta annoyed how it went from being totally awesome real inner struggles (with them learning to like each other), to now having external forces mess with them. Like, there's good angst, and then there's really dumb unnecessary angst because no one SAYS anything. (LOOKING AT YOU MR. SECRETARY). I thought how Gun grieved over Sera was some good angst--that's real and I was legit scared he might turn around, but then it was so satisfying to see how he made his decision. I might be too worried over things that haven't happened yet, but I hope they come up with something good I swear to God.

I also never saw the original drama so I don't know how they'll be following it (or not), though I have heard mostly good things about this drama's deviation. I just hope they don't take a deviation into temporary-memory-impairment-land UGH. I probably wouldn't stop watching because the addiction is too strong lol, but I would be incredibly peeved. I do have hope since the writers have been so good with turning tropes around...so I hope this is some fake-out. Don't even mention the A-word around my OTP, I WON'T ALLOW IT.
