SBS schedules Temptation to follow Doctor Stranger

Strangely, the summer SBS Monday-Tuesday slot is the only one that hasn’t been filled months in advance for some reason (though it could be argued they’re not late so much as the others were earlier than usual), but the network has announced the title that will follow Doctor Stranger this July. The new drama called Temptation will be a hero-centric melodrama about a man in his thirties. Does it seem like dramaland is more testosterone-filled than usual these days? Must be the year of the male melo.

Temptation comes from Yigim Productions, the studio behind Empress Ki and I Summon You Gold. The drama will be about a married man who falls into enormous insurmountable debt. In order to repay it, he makes a shady deal wherein he “entrusts his body to another woman.” Buh… does that mean what I think it means? Given the setup, an Indecent Proposal-style arrangement seems somehow less farfetched than enslaving him to ten years as her secretary or something.

While under said bodily contract of an undisclosed nature, he then meets another woman. Because two love interests is so old hat? Anyway, the drama will be about the man’s work, love, and marriage, which I’m guessing are three entirely different lives he leads (with three different women, I’d wager). It sure sounds saucy, but then, you wouldn’t make a drama called Temptation about a boy scout, now would you?

Casting is underway for a thirtysomething leading man to headline, and the production plans to complete casting by the end of this month and begin shooting in June. Temptation follows Doctor Stranger in July.

Sounds interesting and fresh, but perhaps too strong for the Korean public.

This would be great on Jtbc or TvN or OCN but on a network, it will probably be yawningly tame. Bummer.

citing Dramabeans Glossary:

Makjang- a sylistic, tonal, or narrative element in dramas that chooses to play up outrageous storylines to keep viewers hooked despite how ridiculous the stories become (adultery, revenge, rape, birth secrets, fatal illnesses, and flirting with incest possibilities are some makjang favorites). Shows can be part of a makjang class of dramas (Wife’s Temptation is a makjang series), or they can have makjang tendencies (Mary Stayed Out All Night went makjang toward the end). Generally considered a negative thing (“Gah, how makjang can you get?”), unless a drama intentionally embraces the style (such as Baker King Kim Tak-gu or Flames of Desire).

Riiiiight, so melo can have makjang tendencies but not exactly equate to being makjang. That was basically my point too.

What I mean, it is not a genre.
If you look up Wife's Temptation at dramawiki, it's listed as melodrama.

Ahh, okay, I see what you mean.

I know, I know, but melos on SBS whose titles are Temptation? There's some history here.

Or maybe I'm wrong and SBS is just trolling us like they did with The Woman Who Married Three Times. :D

Could be. Just based on description alone, I didn't think it was makjang. It sounded melo mostly.

Hehe, it always sounds melo at first. And then the ratings are published and someone at SBS makes a phone call to the screenwriter: "We are back in single-digits, we need some amensia here!".

@mudaepo don't forget the incest!

Not excited by the plot but if it's Empress Ki and ISYG production I can guarantee delicious craziness LOL

Okay, now to list thirtysomething men:
1. Ji Sung
2. Joo Sang Wook
3. Joo Ji Hoon
4. Kim Jae Won
5. Lee Jung Jin, etc
Okay, there are so many but those are my favorite 30-something men

About the thirtysomething leading actor...So JiSub isn't involved in any project right now....although it's not his style of drama...

Maybe it's just that i'm tired of doctors & hospital based dramas now, but i'm kinda finding Doctor Strangers boring, even though it has some of my fave actors in it. ;;;;
Does the story get interesting and does anyone recommend to stick through the first couple episodes for the story to pick up?

As a fan, I would say, HELL YES.

It's only been five episodes so far. You should try at least 4 to form your own opinion. Besides, I'm not sure what exactly you found boring about it. The plot? The spy stuff? The politics? The surgeries? If this show is good at anything, it's that it has plenty of genres to keep moving around and preventing the show from being boring. But I guess it's a problem if you found all of it boring.

When I saw the title of my favorite drama under Drama Casting and News with SBS next to it....I thought for one heart-stopping moment that something terrible was happening like a writer or PD got kicked out or an episode was preempted. I was gonna flip. LOL. Never have I been so happy over such a benign news.

Aww... I'm touched that you remembered Song Jae Rim. ^^

It's too early in the morning and I read your comment as "bodily contact". That would've been an awesome drama instead. Contracts are a dime a dozen in dramaland. :((

Well, I'm desperately waiting for casting news for Song Jae Rim as well, although probably not as intensely as you, heheh. I'd really like him to take on a badass role, which he does so well, with maybe a hidden vulnerability or soft side, since from what I've seen he has great potential to do complex roles as well. He mentions wanting to do a rom-com next, which probably won't stretch his acting abilities as much, but I'm just eager to see ANY movement on the casting front for him.

So, there will be three love interests in this drama right? (Wife vs Indecent proposal vs New love interest)

As this is melo, I just hope that the writers wouldn't steoreotyping their female characters. You know, the wife is characterized as a victimized, clingy neglected being and the fierce, sexy go-getter vocal women is deemed as the 'nappeun yeoja' ( i see the indecent proposal as the villain in this) because she wears sexy clothes and wear bright, bold red lipstick and usually likes to throw shades to the other woman because of her bad taste in fashion. Meanwhile, the new love interest would be the candy-esque heroine or the manic pixie dream girl with a terminal disease.

When will K-dramaland take a cue from frozen and flipped some of their stereotypes into something else? I dunno like the sexy, fierce women is a pragmatist and a leader of an underground fashion movement who sees something in the candy heroine that the hero is too blind to see ( eg. candy is a goldigger) while the candy heroine is not who she seems to be and just want the monies (she learns all the candy-esque attitude from k-dramas and nailed it).

Sorry for the rant.

I get what you're talking about, I am all for diversified characters and relationships, but really, do all successul women in kdramas have to be active in the field of fashion?

Well, the fashion field is just an example of a career path that just came to my mind. I do agree that we need more women in kdramas be successful in a variety of field even if its an obscure job position but even with the diverse career field offered for these women in kdramas, what's the point if it will just be used as a background surrounding/setting for the characters.

UGH! This sounds ghastly, and hearing that it's going to be written by the villain responsible for the crime against sentience that was Dr. Jin make me more certain than ever I'll be avoiding it. Of couse, because it has "stinker" and "turkey" written all over it, my favourite Ms. Yoon will no doubt say yes, dammit!
