Choi Jin-hyuk courted to join Fated To Love You
by girlfriday
Now that Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara have confirmed that they’ll be reuniting for the summer romantic comedy drama Fated to Love You, the offer has been made to Choi Jin-hyuk (Emergency Couple) to play the second lead. He’s considering favorably, though there are currently other offers on his plate. I don’t really want Choi Jin-hyuk to play a second lead in dramas anymore, but perhaps the project is too tempting to pass up. I do like him in rom-coms, so I can’t exactly complain about it if he joins the cast of an upbeat show.
Fated to Love You is a remake of the 2008 Taiwanese drama of the same name, about a couple forced into a contract marriage after a one-night stand gets them pregnant. Jang Hyuk plays the chaebol heir with a prickly shell, and Jang Nara plays the weak heroine whose only good trait is her kindness (grooooan).
If he signs on, Choi Jin-hyuk will play the other guy who falls for Jang Nara and has a one-sided love for her. I can already feel the line forming for the second lead support group. Will there be hugs and free cookies?
Fated to Love You will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays on MBC, following A New Leaf (which follows Sly and Single Again). It premieres in July.

Well, that's how things work in K-ent sometimes. Look at Joo Sang Wook, he finally got a lead role in one of the major tv network. He has been in more popular dramas than Choi Jin-hyuk and we are talking about mega hits like QSD and Giant.
Choi Jin-hyuk needs a hit drama so people wont forget about him when he leaves for the army.

Hm, not really. There are much better looking people than him getting lead roles. The people who get the lead roles usually have proven track records for being in successful dramas, even as second lead, he doesn't. Before GFB most of his dramas were flops and he went by another name until a few years ago. Even someone like Jung Woo who had a more successful year than him was still offered the second lead role in a drama (though he turned it down).

i watched the taiwanese drama which this show will adapt from. the second lead in in the T-drama has quite a fair bit of presence (not cos of the actor, but as a character in the show), and is the catalyst to changing the female lead from being all "nice and kind" (but weak) to nice and kind -- and strong.

The 2nd lead in FTLY was pretty typical and bland perfect guy if I remember correctly and loses to the guy who treated the female lead like total garbage for the majority of the drama. So, nothing new. He could probably find something more interesting...? Even if it's not a lead role.

I'm not Peeps, but Hyun Bin just finished filming Secret Garden, which was a HUGE hit right before entering army duty. He had a million print ads already in the works, and it seemed like even while he was gone his face was everywhere. He chose to enter the Marine corps, which was unusual for a celebrity, and earned him points with the citizens.
Honestly I don't think, other than that he didn't star in a drama, it was really noticeable that he was gone. Plus it felt like a countdown to his discharge for months before it happened. And the amount of press at his discharge press con was INSANE.
Hyun Bin returned from army to possibly even greater popularity and fame then when he left. That is VERY unusual.

A Guide to Acing your Military Enlistment for Kpop Idols and other K-Celebrities
Based on the success of Hyun Bin, the perfect case study – someone who came back from enlistment even more popular than before he went in.
1. Go right after a successful project that has wide spread popularity.
2. Have other projects in place; releasing right before the time of enlistment, for example, a film/movie, preferably one that screens at a foreign movie festival. Give lots of press about the movie before you leave, keeping your name in the media, as well as, publicizing your impending enlistment.
3. Have projects that come out during the enlistment period. For example CFs, Ads, and other promotions that keeps your face and name out there.
4. Score really well on all your military pre-testing and get assigned to a prestigious unit. Make sure the press covers this. And earn kudos from young and old, men and women, fan and non-fan for being the best.
5. Go into enlistment with hint of a broken heart. This makes people emotionally connect with you even more.
6. Do well in Basic Training: look like a true soldier- no celebrity haircut, score well on shooting practice and all other training requirements. Make sure strategic pictures of you doing these activities – shooting, swimming, screaming top less etc. are released to the media.
7. Give interviews (not directly), through unknown sources, about how hard you are working, helping the morale of your unit and how you are truly respected by your squadron.
8. Make sure pictures, awards and acknowledgements show up in the press, periodically for the entire 20+ months you are away.
9. Be the best soldier you can be – decline perks, don’t take too many vacations, and for goodness sake don’t pull a Rain, Se7en, Sangchu bonehead move and get involved in a scandal.
10. Comeback after almost 2 years and leave people shocked, because they can’t believe it was that long, because you never really disappeared from the media or people’s minds.
With these steps, you would have earned so much favorability points and popularity. Your status will be greatly increased. So that upon your enlistment exit, there will be more fans at the welcome back event than there were upon entrance.

One major hit is not going to help the leads at all...they need to be a lot more popular and I am sure it took Hyun bin (Kim sam soon, world within and him dating the female lead ...)also a lot of time to get to where he is.
Hyun bin had a major major major hit with Secret Garden! That catapulted him to the top of the league right before serving the army..citizens want to see more of him now.
I don't think that will be the case with Choi Jin Hyuk. I wish it were because I really like this guy since I saw GFB. He scored brownie points over Lee Seung Gi (I love this guy too ever since I saw The King 2 Hearts) from me. I liked his romantic story more than I liked Suzy's and LSG. Hope he gets to play more leads than second leads. This guy deserves more...such a cutie.

The drama was good, but for Taiwanese style dramas. I do not see how this drama can work in Korean markets, at least not without making the drama more angsty than the T-version was. I personally think Choi Jin-hyuk would have been better as lead for this drama than Jang Hyuk.
Oh, and the one night stand was an accident. They were on a cruse ship, he thought he was sleeping with his girlfriend, and she thought she was with her boyfriend. Neither of them knew they were sleeping with someone different from their significant other until the sex was finished. Thats whats suppose to make this drama different from every other story.

till it turns melo and quite hard with the heavy stuff that like many i'm curious how will they deal with because TW stype is more liberal than korean ones were one can beraly see a real kiss from their leads not to mention having them by any chance involve sexually(usually K heroines are so pure and naive they think they make baby's by touching hands)...
the plot was indeed soooooo cheesy and i think even more now after all this years and the heroine was berable thanks to Joe Chan brilliant acting...even so there were heavy stuff that still doubt koreans want to see(based on their culture)or that they actually dare to show

"K heroines are so pure and naive they think they make baby’s by touching hands.."
I had to laugh at that, because it is so true. I just can't see this having the impact in a k-drama remake unless it is on cable.
BTW, a while back I came across a news story where that situation actually happened in real life (2009'ish?), but in that case it was her twin sister who had gotten drunk at the wedding and went to sleep in their bed. I never saw any follow up stories on it, so no idea what actually happened. (And still not 100% sure it was really true).

I think one of the reasons they hired older actors for the K-version compared to the t-drama, there by making the characters older, is so the drama does not show "indecent youth", or something of that nature. Maybe its more ok for people in their 30's or 40's to have one night stands, fall in love, and get married compared to people in their 20's.
I dont know, I just really cannot see this drama as a k-drama without them changing a lot, and the things they will change are probably not the same things I wish could be different in the t-drama.

True but because of their young age I could buy the leads being bullied into marriage and what happened when the girlfriend came back.
If they're all in their 30s a lot of my sympathy goes out the window because the excuses don't work once you move them into the next age bracket.
There's a 2000-ish drama where the barely out of their teens OTP have a drunken one night stand. They enter into a contract marriage because of the kid and their parents, agreeing to divorce in 5 years. It's not a very good drama and the lack of chemistry really kills it but I'm hoping K-Fated To Love You is more like that tone wise than revisiting the silliness and old tropes that plagued FTLY.
I just don't have it in me to deal with a spineless candy. I've seen too many, my patience for it is gone.

I completely agree with you! I do not think I am going to watch this drama because of the things we have talked about. I really do not like that they are making the characters older, and I just do not feel this story goes well with k-drama styles, thereby I do not have faith it will be remade well.

He's never been close to Lee Seung Gi's level in GFB, only a nice addition to the show. GFB's popularity was of course thanks to LSG's acting and commitment. Whether Choi Jin Hyuk's dilusional fangirls like it or not, the orientation of their respective careers prove it : top actor whose name is enough to launch a big budget drama on a big channel for LSG, and average actor who has only got his moment of glory through a supporting role relating a lot on his visuals, and who stills has everything to prove.
I don't hate CJH but it bothers me to read things like "he's such a great actor', as if the world was awaiting for him. He hasn't yet proven that he was great. He showed that he had potential, that's all. He stills lacks subtlety and expressiveness, he's got to work a lot on it to get better roles.

I think it's because you've only watched her more recent dramas? She used to be typecast as a bright and plucky highschooler/girl because of her cute image. I mean, in Bright Girl, My Love Patzzi, Wedding and even Bratty Princess she was never "weak". She was more of the cute girl next door with an attitude.
Anyway, I thought Fated to Love You was cheesy as well, but nothing can be cheesier than Autumn's Concerto. People loved the two dramas though and I'll definitely be catching this one just to see how the Jjang couple develops.
As to whether CJH is taking up the role, I read on the soompi forums that he's confirmed. Don't think that's true as of now, but I do believe he'll take up the role.

Perhaps you just dislike that type of show? Though Jang Nara acted in more than just comdey/romance it is just in Korea where they like her fixed in the sort of role, and why not, pretty much all her dramas if not big hits where solid pay the staff and end up in the black ones. While in China she pretty much though of as a near a certain hit maker as you can get in that sort of business.

Actually, I think Emergency Couple did quite well--being a cable drama. Weren't the ratings at like 4%?? That's pretty damn good since I think the average is 1-2% for a success. The drama also got extended because of popularity. Choi Jin Hyuk seems to be really popular, too--he really flew up on the radar after Gu Family Book which was a while ago. I don't think he's at a stand still at all.

Averaging 4+% is good for a cable production, but it's not fantastic considering that cable dramas are getting higher numbers already. Plus, the drama didn't generate enough hype in general, not to mention that from start to end the drama was more of a Song Jihyo show than anything else. I think CJH didn't even receive as much attention as when he did his cameo role in Gu Family Book. Since when he was doing Heirs I think he couldn't even be considered the 3rd male lead, I won't expect to see him in a real leading role anytime soon.

April 23, 2014 at 11:20 PM
But, it was one of the cable dramas getting those higher numbers. *shrug* Still, I don't think he is as irrelevant as some make him seem. But then I'm also not in the opinion that a lead role is everything. It's great if you're getting roles at all and since he has things to choose between and right after another project even I'd say he's OK.

They only so many lead roles going around and frankly there a lot more better actors around than he is, what he is though well from comment here anyway is semi hot, so it worth his time to take any role offered to him before his army time comes around and playing second lead to the likes of the twin Jangs is hardly a bad thing, quite the reverse I would think.

I don't know what they will do with the story, stay true or change (a lot) stuff All I can say is I hope they will change her character cause, weak is boring and hard to root for. I can sort of see Choi Jin Hyuk as Dylan. He's got a crinkly-eyed smile to match Baron Chen's at least! :D
(Also I just wanted to point out that the character Jang Nara will be playing has a lot of personal growth--at least in the TW version--so writing off her character from the beginning as only a weak and kind doormat isn't quite fair, in my opinion. Or maybe that's just my love for Joe Chen's portrayal speaking!)

I agree! I think the secret to the popularity was really in the evolution that the characters had. The reason Dylan came off more bland was because his character didn't really grow. He was kind, gentle, and honest from the start. At least he never ventured to the dark side as a second lead.

The female lead definitely does grow a spine. I don't think the story would work if she was changed much from the doormat she started as. That's the whole point of the second half, him having to win her back. I always felt really bad for how she was treated by the male lead so I did root for her.

I love/hate FTLY (love the drama, hate a few aspects about the story/side characters). The Taiwanese version def had a certain cheesiness to it that was charming in its own way buuuut I'm not sure it will be/can be/should be carried over into a korean version...

I think if he wasn't planning to enter the service soon he would have definitely held out for a lead role in something, but with most of them already chosen for summertime, this was probably the best chance he had to work some more before leaving. I am sad to see him in another second lead role, but I will still root for him to do well.
All the best to you Jin Hyuk. Fighting!!!

Eh, Ethan Ruan is better. Korean dramas are basically the modernized version of old weeping TW soaps. Now they do re-makes of new idol TW dramas.

It seems to run in streaks - for a while we had a fairly decent run of mostly original scripts. But my viewing has dropped off a lot lately as I am starting to see a lot of the same old recycled clichés and soap-opera type tropes that I hoped had gone away (Hotel King for one current example).

Don't grown about Jang Nara's character yet. Actually, that character is pretty much a secretary (right?) who is just used to pleasing everyone but herself (occupational hazard??). Later in the drama, that all changes. I quite liked her. She had a lot of growth and she was really understandable. Joe Chen is always so charming, too and I feel the same about Jang Nara. I feel like those kind characters she gets always has an extra layer to them.
I don't remember much about the second lead in FTLY--he didn't do much, sooo I'm guessing the Korean version would bulk up his role more, especially if it was going into the hands of a popular actor. I don't mind if he was to take a second lead at all--it's all about acting; he'll pick whatever role speaks to him. I believe he is popular enough, now, to go and come back from the army just fine, as well.

I was just thinking that they couldn't have cast a better actress than Jang Nara for the character. She seems like she'll pull it off well.

Yeah, I think she'll do great. She's sweet but not in a child-like or tooth achey way. I think she's pretty cool.
I do think the reporters or PR do female characters a disservice when they describe them as JUST kind. You start to relate it to the actress even if their performance is more than that much of the time. But, I guess there is just not much news out yet or they expect people to know the story already or check it out themselves, lol.

Funny thing Is I was actually thinking noooo not second lead before I read your post . Then let it go thinking I was being unfair untilbi read the post and comments. The fact that we are all on the same page is promising at least guys. Means that many other fans are thinking the same and hopefully others will see and cast him accordingly. I think hes showed that hes first lead material.

Well for sure, the drama will get attention anyway. So he's not going to be out of the radar. And for a zillion times, he'll be the guy who won't get the girl... It would be nice if he can get a drama in which he can be the lead, and that drama has to be like excellent. I mean if the drama flops... I don't know if 2 years after he's done with the army, he'll be popular again. It took him years to be where he is now. That bubble can explode anytime...

Fated To Love You is actually one of my all-time fav twdramas! Well, it was a a wee bit cheesy in the beginning (ok, A LOT cheesy) but it was awesomeballs from that point onwards.
What made it winsome for me was the little things like Xin Yi (the heroine)'s banter with her family - Mama Chen was hilarious (she also nailed serious scenes like a boss imo) - but the humor is unique to that dialect so idk if the remake will be able to capture that.
And of course, Xin Yi's transformation, which was a fuck yeah! after all the suffering she went through. Also, the hero being extremely dorky to win his lady love (think Joo Sang Wook in Sly & Single).
Oh yeah, THE DOG!!! I hope they will not omit Baby Ji ok can someone cast Barassi pls - it's just BEGGING to be done

I watched the TW drama and enjoyed the earlier part of it before it derailed into a mess. The casting of Ethan Ruan and Joe Chen was great but Baron Chen just looked pretty and I could not muster any love for his 2nd lead character.
However, Choi Jin Hyuk is capable of stealing the show even as the 2nd lead. I ended up rooting for his character in I Need Romance over Kim Jung Hoon's. I believe he will be very good at playing a character who doesn't get the girl.
I am probably the only one who thinks Jang Hyuk is the odd one here. Maybe it was discussed earlier. Assuming they stick pretty much to the original story, I can see Jang Nara and CJH doing this but not Jang Hyuk. At that time, Ethan Ruan made the character awfully flawed but believable and likable. The setup is silly about contract marriages and all. It was made plausible because of the youth and absurdness of the characters. Well, Jang Hyuk is a good actor so who knows what he will bring to the table.

There is actually a thai version that came out in 2006 called oum ruk or carrying love with a similar storyline. I havent seen the taiwanese fated to love you, but the thai version is pretty cute and adorable.

I'm torn between wanting him to find a lead spot and being quite content with him playing a second lead...wasn't able to make it past his jerk character in Emergency Couple. I'd be content with seeing him be nice even if it does cost him in the end....
...because he can just come to me.

Can't he be the lead instead? I love the FTLY story =)

being a lead is not all about height or age. i heard enough complaining about how Jjang Couple will fare compare to CJH height. also how JH will pull the character coz he's older compare from original version and some of us think CJH is more suitable.
if writer want CJH as lead they'll offer it to him in the first place. but, in this case Jang Hyuk and Jang Nara already hv discussion with the writer before they confirmed the roles. that mean, this k-version maybe nothing like T-version and they put more matured storyline.
being a second lead and doesn't got a girl is always doesn't matter. what matter most is how you pull the character, how you want to make character your own and be a likeable second lead and maybe surpassing the lead if you perform amazing enough. there's a lot of amazing second lead character that people love in k-drama like Bae Soo Bin and Kim Woo Bin. some of second lead also die in the drama but people love them coz the actor is carrying it well ex Jo Jung Suk in TK2H.
as for Choi Jin Hyuk, it such a challenge for him with this character coz from original version, Dylan is such amazing character and ppl do love him. for me, being second lead is ok, doesnt get a girl is ok as long as ppl remember you and your acting as the most amazing that they ever seen.

If he goes back to second lead, it would feel like he's stepping back down – would such a role really be good for his career?
But mostly I think the drama's premise sounds as boring as it can get. How many times have we had that kind of story, that kind of characters? Isn't there something more interesting and challenging out there?

I can totally imagine him as dylan already ,I've watch the Taiwan version and love it urgh, dylan is a pretty nice character that will make choi Jin hyuk more popular because it actually surpasses the lead sometimes but unfortunately I didn't like the Taiwan version's dylan

I'm always wary when it comes to korean remakes. although i would like CJH to take on lead roles, i would rather he take second lead roles if it's a remake. at least he won't get criticized if it flops.

Ooh..what's with the trend of re-making Korean dramas? anyway, he reminds me of Yoon Kye Sang. He also took a second lead in the drama Greatest Love but that seemed to have been a good choice for him. As it introduced more viewers to him and his character was superbly likeable. So I wouldn't say this is a bad choice. But if he had a better role, and a lead role instead, then obviously he shouldn't consider this role.

Bleh. I couldn't survive past episode 1 of Fated to Love You. Which is not really surprising since I don't like majority of Taiwanese dramas. What's the deal with those remakes anyway? First My Queen, now this? Neither of them are worth paying for, IMHO. If Korean producers are running out of ideas why not chose a quality drama instead of recycling same tired plots? I mean, there are tonns of Korean dramas featuring contract relationships and noona romances, is it really necessary to shop abroad for the same damn storyline? Instead, I would LOVE to see them buying the rights for one of Director Winnie's dramas. They are simply amazing. The Rose and In Time With You are among my all time favourites and I would love to see Korean versions of them.
On a brights side remaking mediocre dramas is waaay better than trying to remake absolute perfection. I've heard Group 8 is trying to butcher Nodame Cantabile. Just thinking about it sends shivers down my spine.

I got excited thinking that CJH will take on the lead for this drama. I though he would be perfect in Ethan Ruan's char really... But no... it's the second lead...
And for a while I couldn't even remember if there was a second lead in the original at all...
Does not make sense :(
Even though I have not watched Jang Huyk in any drama I still think CJH would have been better as lead for this one ...
Oh well, at the least don't want to see him as the second here... It won't really match with him.

Reminds me of a Wonderful Life with one night stand and pregnancy...Haven't seen the Taiwanese drama though, but I'm kind of bored that the male lead treats heroine like trash but she still falls in love with him. It's much more realistic that guy treats girl like a queen so she falls in love with him, right?

lol the guy in the TW version was like a person with Multiple Personalities for the first half of the show, as she was to blame for ruining all his plans ,he was drugged after all so the idea of shared reponsibilty wasnt so clear cut, he decided he had to hate her and treated her badly but of course she was like a puppy dog with matching big eyes and it soon become harder and harder for him to keep up his hate and repeatly found himself acting the totaly oppersite way, and of course he would then flip and treat her even worse to try and make up for his mistake. Of course he was still a jerk but kind of a cute one as you could see he was fighting what his brain was telling him to what his heart..and um other parts of his body where telling him.

Please Choi Jin Hyuk, don't take this role... I want him to take a lead role come on! He was pretty good in Emergency Couple, I think he's ready for a big production on main channels.
I reaaally loved Fated to Love You (the Taiwanese version) and I don't want the Koreans to ruin it (as they did with Hana Yori Dango aka Boys Over Flowers in Korea. Yup, not talking about the Taiwanese version "Meteor Garden" because it wasn't as good as the Japanese one ;p).

Agree!
HYD is the best among all others! I've watched it thousands time and never get sick of it! It's my first crush to all of the casts (Inoue Mao, MatsuJun, Oguri Shun, Shota Matsuda). A series that will never get old..
Back to Fated to Love You. Like you, I also loveeee Taiwanese Fated to Love You, and I do hope the Korean version won't destroy it. However, with less episode count, I think the Korean version will be more fast-paced (like what they did with Witch's Love), and therefore will be more straight-forward.
Regarding the casts, although I really want Choi Jin Hyuk to be the lead, Jang Nara and Jang Hyuk have worked together before, and therefore I believe their chemistry would be stelar. And chemistry is one of the main point in this drama IMO.
By the way, are those Korean writers/producers have a crush on Ethan Ruan? LOL I mean this would be his second drama to be remaked.
